Mini vs. G4 400 difference ...need new machine

Hello,
I am looking for real world advice from mini users.
My current machine is a g4 400. Believe it or not I make my living doing imaging, design, web work. My major tools are PhotoShop, InDesign, Illustrator, GoLive, Painter, etc.
As you might imagine my current machine has trouble but being the cheap ******* that I am I have held out. I have been trying to hold out for the new Intel G5 towers but I don't think I can hold out any longer and need to get a machine in the next month or so. I will look at the Intel G5 towers later after they come out. I am not interested in being a guinea pig with the new Intel minis and how they are going to work with my software.
So here is my question-
Will I see significant performance differences between my current machine (G4 400 tower with 1.5 gigs of RAM and a couple of hard drives) and a current Mac Mini?
How does the Mini do with a 20"-24" LCD displays?
Would the Mini be a good interim machine between what I have and a G5 tower in another year or so? Or will there not be any real difference between what I have and the current minis?
Comparision to G5 iMacs?
Thanks for your help.

Of the two systems, the one I tend to pick to use is the upgraded G4. The slightly slower performance is easily offset by multiple, faster drives, two or more more displays, the extra RAM, the ease of adding in Airport, choice over internal optical drive, available slots for expansions cards, audio input, multi-boot capabilities etc. But there ARE downsides to the upgrade path too.
Most obvious is that there's only USB1.1 unless you add a USB2.0 card. That the original video card is woefully inadequate these days without adding a second or replacing it. That the faster the processor upgrade added, the less stable the system tends to be. That however fast and flexible you make it, it's still an old computer with a finite life ahead.
Of the uses that you list, the only one that causes me to doubt the mini's capabilities is Photoshop. Even then, if it's a reasonably casual use, a mini with 1Gb RAM would be perfectly OK... a bit sluggish opening files and in general because Photoshop likes a fast drive with plenty of space, but for the majority of us it would work perfectly well. If you're use is more pro than hobby, that may well not be the case however, and that's where the flexibility of an upgraded G4 might work rather better.
I like my mini and I've used it for a lot of fairly demanding tasks - it's a very capable system that really suffers far less than people generally suggest from it's slower drives etc. Most people - including many who decry it - would find it more than capable of performing the tasks they would need of it. I've certainly been impressed by mine. But the upgrade option for an older G4 does have the benefit of giving you the choice of what aspects of the system you need to focus most upon. For instance, I wanted to be able to run 2 or 3 displays, sometimes a TV, from mine, simply because I find it helpful to have an application's primary window on one screen and the toolboxes on the other, or ethereal on one, an administrator terminal server session on a second, and mail processing on the third - easier to see everything without switching systems or windows.... so I just bought a used Radeon 7500 PCI card and added it - cost $30, and more than adequate. I wanted reliable and fast drives and the ability to multi-boot for testing, so I put three 7200rpm drives in it, each one bootable. I wanted Airport for occasional use, so I put a card in it, but if I need the card for something else (a G4 FP iMac for example) I can easily pull it out again. I occasionally need to back up a directory, but since it's done at 2am, I didn't need anything fast, so I spent $20 on a discontinued Pioneer A104 DVD burner that a dealer had lying around. And while speed is always useful, I knew that a really fast processor wasn't going to be all that important, so I put in a 1GHz unit that does the job exceptionally well and wasn't a silly price. I also had RAM that was out of a couple of disused P3s, and put that in the G4 and it works just fine, maxed out at 2Gb.
Whether to buy a mini or upgrade the G4 depends on a lot of factors - but above all don't forget that your G4 has no warranty whereas a new mini will, and Applecare can also be added to give you 3 year's cover. For business use that could be important too.

    Hey all!
New ID as i'm rubbish at remembering passwords/log on emails....
I've got a Satellite Pro A10 that needs a new keyboard - there's loads floating around on ebay for the Satellite A10 - but not the Pro - now i'm almost 100% it'll be the same keyboard - right? the 'Pro' bit just usually denounces extras bits and qhizzy things - but basically they're the same hardware platform underneath - i.e. the same keyboard between the Sat A10 and Sat Pro A10
    Anyone?
:D thanks in advance for letting me sleep at night!

I agree with you. There is no much difference and the notebook construction is the same.
I am 100% sure the keyboard is the same.

Much the same way as you originally did.  Download it and use your serial number to activate it.

It is not viewable on your old computer.  We may be able to get you a replacement serial number.  Do you still have your proof of purchase for Photoshop Elements 5?

The problem is that your Mac software is quite old.  You must have a version of OS X on your Mac earlier than 10.6.8 (current is 10.8.3), so your particular version of OS X cannot support any later version of iTunes.  (The current iTunes version is 11.0.2).  In particular, your iTunes on your computer cannot deal with your iPad which has software that is much more current than your OS X operating system (and Mac iTunes).

  • Got an update and a new PC, do I need to install both on the new machine?

I have cs5 on a laptop that I am destroying.  I bought a new tower and have an upgrade to 5.5.  I downloaded 5.5 to the new machine, (thinking I could just put in both serial #'s) but now it tells me I can't use the update on the new machine because it can't find the old copy.  Does this mean I have to download CS5 to the new machine and THEN update to 5.5?  if so isn't that just a huge waste of space on my machine?  I have both serial #'s.  thoughts?

Typcially the program asks for the older serial number as I understand it (I have not done an install this way). Actually 5.5 is an update to 5 I think. Thus you would need the number of the prior version, not the 5 version. At least those are my thoughts.

  • Machine needs new OS; whither CS4?

I've got CS4 faculty/student edition on a Dell laptop that's taken some pretty severe hits,  It still works if I don't close the cover (hinge damage), but there are also signs of malware here and there.  I'm retired faculty now (not emeritus) and cannot afford a commercial upgrade; I could barely afford the discounted version.
I'm either going to get a new machine, or at least restore the system to factory defaults.  To cover the possibilities and help me decide which path to choose, I have some questions.
    1) I gather I can activate and then reactivate on the same or different machine.  Is this accurate?  Does it use up an activation?
    2) I've just started to play with Vista's "Windows Easy Transfer".  It appears to be copying executables.  Does it also copy an activation?  (If so I'd probably use it if I'm just refreshing the OS).
    3) What should I have asked or worried about that I neglected to mention?

    2) I've just started to play with Vista's "Windows Easy Transfer".
No. It doesn't transfer what it doesn't know and that are the invisible parts of the activation system. As the others already said, properly deactivate and then install from scratch and activate on the new system.

  • Moving boot camp to new machine with Parallels 10 or WinClone?

i seem to have a ton of document here but have not been able to figure a way out of my dilemma.
i have a 2006 mac pro that had two boot camp installs with one of windows 7 and one of XP. each of these are still intact on my hard drives in this computer. however, i can not see this computer on my display as there appears to be some issue with the converter that i am using for my cinema display mini display port (to get it to DVI display port on the 2006) so i cannot really DO anything with these installations other than see them when i put the disk in my new 2012.
Parallels 10 appears to have a new "boot camp" mode and i am trying to figure out if there is a way to get the boot camp installs into my 2012 as "virtual boot camp" installations. i just put one of the 2006 disks into the 2012 machine and tried this and Parallels seems to have accepted this but i am not sure if i somehow need to leave the physical boot camp install in this bay 4 or if i can just pull the disk and now i have a "virtual boot camp" install of windows 7.
ALSO, i DO have WinClone backups of both of these boot camp installations on the new machine but i believe i am supposed to run CHKDSK and Sysprep on the actual boot camp installs before trying to migrate them over to the new machine and since i cannot see anything in the old machine i can't try this. actually, i did try it back when i could see the 2006 but there was some error with the Sysprep and the thread proposing solutions was like 26 pages long.
anyway, anyone done this and have any suggestions?
    THANKS

    A. when you say you can boot from corresponding installation media - you are talking about my Windows 7 and Windows XP install disks?
When you installed XP or W7, you would have used either an Install DVD or a USB, or both. This is what you would need. You can recreate the USB using Bootcamp Assistant, if necessary. The only caveat would be if you subsequently upgraded to later Service Packs, and the installer was built earlier than that.
    B. when you say "if your windows is already bootable" you are saying that i could put the disk in the new machine, set preferences to BOOT from the Boot Camp installation on the other disk and run the Safe Mode on this boot camp install and then manually remove drivers? also presumably i can compare the 2006 machine to the 2012 machine and see which drivers i don't have to remove? also, i am guessing here that i can try either of these (boot from media or boot into safe mode in the boot camp) despite the fact that yosemite does not support XP boot camp?
It is possible that Windows may not boot at all, due to hardware changes and driver differences. Safe Mode is a minimal driver load boot. It should be bootable. If you end with a completely un-bootable system after you move disks, then Windows Startup Repair may be necessary first. You may also need to run chkdsk. I would also recommend uninstalling any third-party NTFS software. Once Windows is fully installed, there is no interaction with Yosemite, and a minimal interaction with firmware and Apple Bootmanager which recognizes a NTFS system.
    C. can you help me with the terminology here? you ask if any of my "W7/WXP" disks have a version of OS X co-resident". at one point i had what i understood to be JUST an XP install on my 2006 machine on a hard drive which i still have. i don't know if this was installed "under" some OS but as far as i know i /just/ had a boot camp installation of XP on this disk. is this possible? if so, what do i call it? ALSO, i /now/ have basically two disks with one containing a PARTITION of Snow Leopord or Mountain Lion and a PARTITION of Windows XP Boot Camp. then the /second/ disk contains a CLONE of the OS X install and a PARTITION of Windows 7 Boot Camp. Do you know what i call these?! are either of them what you consider "co-resident"? i guess i don't exactly understand the types of boot camps i can have (ignoring virtual machines).
If the disk was formatted as an MBR disk and was fully dedicated to Windows, it will not have OS X. In some cases, a single physical disk can be partitioned to host both OSes. If the OS X part was on a separate physical disk, this is what is usually is done on a MacPro with multiple disks.
    D. can i /PLEASE/ ask you to help me understand the types of virtual machines i can create on the 2012 with Parallels 10? right now i just hooked up a Windows 7 virtual machine from Parallels 7. so this is a "true virtual machine". but i can somehow also now create a "boot camp virtual machine" where i can EITHER boot into the boot camp or into the virtual machine? i mean, i guess what we are discussing is a way to CLEAN the Windows 7 BOOT CAMP INSTALLATION on my 2006 by putting the hard drive into the 2012 and to then - well i guess i then create a WinClone of the Boot Camp install and i run the WinClone MIGRATION procedure to get this boot camp on the 2012? /then/ i run parallels and hook up this Boot Camp install in the new machine?
Usually, BC installations can be imported as virtual machines. You can also install a VM using a virtual disk, which, to OS X, appears like a set of system files. You can as a test import the 2006 disk clone as a VM and test. The VM engines impose their own BIOS engine and can have  their own drivers in such a VM. For example, they will emulate SCSI to access the underlying virtual or physical disk. They may also provide their own file system drivers. For example, VMware Fusion can provide HGFS to share files between OS X and Windows. Your approach should work, but I have never tested Winclone with the VM layer in the middle. You should ask Wincloen support if they support VM as an in-between layer or not. I do not think so.
    E. can you remind me why i can't get a XP Boot Camp on the 2012 machine? was this due to the 2012 mac pro or was it yosemite or both i guess? i mean, for XP i am presumably going to run the TRANSFER procedure on the XP install /after/ putting the hard drive with XP boot camp from the 2006 into my 2012 and then i am going to run this VIRTUAL MACHINE FROM BOOT CAMP operation (link below)? if so, we are saying i can run this from the 2012 and then can i remove the XP Boot Camp drive from the 2012 and still have the virtual machine i guess? in this case i SHOULD ALSO run the XP through the procedure you explain? so in this case i will only have a virtualized XP Boot Camp install and with Windows 7 i will have both the BOOT CAMP install (which i presumably migrated to my OS X hard drive!) and i will be able to virtually boot to this boot camp install using Parallels 10?
Apple deprecated XP support as they moved to BC version 5.x. A new XP installation is not possible, but an existing XP installation will continue to work across OS X version upgrades. This is a 'physical' machine from 2006 MP. Once you install BC drivers on the XP installation to work with 2012, you will need to reverse the migration procedure (uninstall drivers for 2012MP, install 2006 MP drivers). It is a very unusual direction to want to go back to 2006 MP, but it is still a method if the 2012 MP hardware failed, and you wanted to go back to a working 2006 MP. You should check if Parallels 10 supports XP.
    F. i guess if i want to make sure to retain a true boot camp install of the Windows XP install i have to repair the 2006 machine is that right?
    http://kb.parallels.com/en/113658
Not necessarily. If you can migrate (simulating a SysPrep) to the 2012 MP machine, you do not need to resurrect the 2006 MP.

  • Do i have to buy a new machine to install Mountain Lion?

I have a MacBook and have snow leopard.  Will I not be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion?  It is frustrating since moving to iCloud and now my Mac mail server will not work unless I have mountain lion, as I was told by Apple sales person.  Also, I have paid for what was once .mac and then MobileMe for years and now with the move to iCloud, I would still pay the $99 annual fee just to have my Mac mail account.  I have other email options but I like the Mac one for family use.
Are there any options for other than to buy a new machine which I was not expecting do to for another couple of years or so.  I like my MacBook.  It was purchased 1/2007.
That seems to be a bad answer for all pre-2008 MacBook users who were used to using the mail function and now can't.  I don't need the other features of mountain lion.

Apple has tightened its requirements for this OS upgrade, and some older Macs— even ones that qualified for Lion — won't make the cut for Mountain Lion.
The general system requirements are straightforward:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
Apple also lists which models support Mountain Lion:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
So it appears you Cannot run Mountain Lion on that machine.
    Hope this helps

  • Macbook Pro to Mac Mini data sharing, sync, and/or time machine backup?

I currently have a MacBook Pro and am about to buy a Mac Mini. I do a good deal of multitasking on the MBP I and would like to use the Mac Mini as the "home base" of my dealings and my MBP as an extension of it, the way it should be. In short, I will have a desk for the new Mini but I don't really intend on ever being physically at it. Rather, I will be on my MBP or remoting in to it from a PC. At any rate, as an example, is it possible / what would be the best solution for being able to work on my iWeb site via my MBP if it's housed and stored on my Mac Mini?
Secondly, since I will now have 2 mac machines, there is a data question at hand. Specifically, is there a good way to sync all information and settings bewteen two macs running Snow Leopard? If so, what/how, if not, what would be the best option for accomplishing this type of goal?
Lastly, since I will now have 2 mac machines, how should I handle the time machine backups? I have a 2tb ext hard drive serving as a time machine backup for my MBP right now but how would I go about doing the same for the Mini? Should I / can I use the same drive for the mini or does it have to be a seperate time machine backup?
(For the record, I do have an additional 2tb ext hard drive that I would be happy to use as a sync point for all of this data if needed should it be possible to "share" data, apps, etc between the 2 machines. I would be able to broadcast it wirelessly via a device called pogoplug.)
I feel like there is a better and more efficient way to integrate what it is that I'm trying to do here. Any thoughts on the matter?

There are numerous solutions to sync information on two or more Macs. Try doing a google search for "Mac sync" or something along those lines.
As for Time Machine backups, you could connect an external disk drive to your Mac mini and use it as a Time Machine disk for the Mac mini and if you share it out, you can probably also use it to do Time Machine backups of your laptop, but I personally have not tested that yet so I cannot say with certainty that the sharing part will work.

Tried Photoshop at all sorts of various settings including default. All with the D drive being used for the Scratch disk. Working on the similar size file described above. The file I am working on now is 4000 x 4800 pixels, CMYK, 8 bit depth.  Photoshop is slow selecting layers with auto select, very slow when moving layers around the Canvas, and slow rendering the Canvas when zooming in and out. This document also has about  30 layers and is 80mg.
I only use the 64 bit version of Photoshop these days. Also all three monitors are set at 60 Hertz. Photoshop is closed and reopened upon all changes.
I use to be a Photoshop Certified Expert in CS3 so I am extremely familar with the product. I am just stumped.

  • Sandboxing old system disk on new machine?

    Hi,
my question is a fairly simple one, but somewhat convoluted, although I'll try my best to word it clearly:
I just bought an '09 MacPro and stuck in 3 extra 1TB HDD's. I partitioned the 4th drive in two sections of 500GB each. On one of these partitions I want to clone the system drive of my old '07 iMac, the other partition will be used for Bootcamp.
I will use the iMac's HDD clone as an alternative boot disk, occasionally.
I suspect that there are some iffy things on my iMac, since power-down used to be near-instantaneous but now takes almost 20 seconds. That happened just overnight, BTW. Not a gradual process as a result of accumulating bloat, I think.
The one thing I want to avoid, is any sort of malware creeping into my new machine because I cloned my old system drive onto the new one. Is there any way in which I can "sandbox" the cloned boot disk and restrict that system from accessing/recognizing/affecting the other disks?
I basically want to run them as two entirely separate systems, even if they use the same CPU/RAM/GPU.
Any sort of input will be appreciated, thanks.
PS: what is that F8 thing again, where you use the other computer as a target drive?

There are likely no hardware drivers on the iMac clone configuration that will allow you to boot the newer Mac with.
Clone as a archive to access files, but likely can't boot, almost positive of that fact.
The only chance in heck is if the OS X you installed on the old Mac has the hardware drivers for the newer Mac. Say a 10.6.3 Snow Leopard retail disk for instance. Grey disks or factory installed OSX on the old Mac configuration? Forget it.

You can hold c boot the iMac off the 10.6 installer disk and simply install OS X over the installed verison, then immediatly Software Update. This replaces OS X only, not your files or programs, might cure your issue.
Back up your user file folders (Music, pictures etc) to a external drive and disconnect before doing anything.
If your still having issues with the iMac after resinstalling OS X, if your hard drive has enough room (full hard drives slow down a machine, look in Activity monitor) you can create a new user and log into that and see if your problems magically disappear.
You can also get a Firewire cable and adapters (Firewire 800 to 400) hook the two Mac's together and T boot the iMac's hard drive to the desktop of the newer Mac, run a ClamXav scan, grab choice files and so forth, no need for a clone which you likely can't boot anyway.
The one thing I want to avoid, is any sort of malware creeping into my new machine because I cloned my old system drive onto the new one. Is there any way in which I can "sandbox" the cloned boot disk and restrict that system from accessing/recognizing/affecting the other disks?
Well you likely can't clone as it won't boot anyway. So since your not running the OS on the clone on your new machine, code can't execute if it's on there.
Far as I know there are no "hopping" malware for OS X that runs simply by connecting a infected media. OS X warns you of any new programs it hasn't seen previously before allowing it to run.
If you T boot and jsut extract your choice files, run a ClamXav scan, your likely going to be just fine.
Just don't transfer the old programs from the old Mac and run them on your newer machine.
I basically want to run them as two entirely separate systems, even if they use the same CPU/RAM/GPU.
But differnet hardware and no hardware drivers, so I'm almost positive it won't work at all.
PS: what is that F8 thing again, where you use the other computer as a target drive?
Hold T and boot the Mac you want's hard drive to appear on the desktop of the other, you need Firewire cable and adpater if one is one 800 and the other is 400. (defaults to 400 speeds.)
    Good Luck.
