Mini wakes from sleep displaying 8-bit video
After sleeping overnight my brand new 2014 Mac Mini with Intel Iris video card wakes up with the Thunderbolt monitor in 8-bit color. I can't force it into this mode by sleeping and waking for short periods of time, but it is consistent two nights in a row. A restart fixes it. If I take a screenshot and then look at it after the restart it looks normal. Temperature in my office is within specifications for operation.
Any ideas what is going on and what to do about it?
Back up all data. Quit System Preferences if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
~/Library/Preferences/ByHost
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return. A folder should open. If it does, look for a file with a long name that begins "com.apple.preference.displays2". There may be several such files. Move them all to the Trash.
Log out or restart the computer. Test.

MacBook Pro display sometimes does not wake from sleep, display is blank
My computer has been getting a lot of this weird issue that it is asleep, the light is pulsing. But when you go to wake it up, the keyboard lights up, caps light key will work, but the display is blank, nothing makes it turn back on.
I had a friend using it who I let use the guest account, but since the issue kept happening and all the guest account data kept disappearing, I had to create her an account. It's annoying, and sometimes if I catch the crash happening while the unit is display active, I get the color wheel and all the apps freeze up really bad. I'm lucky if I can save my work.
Sleep during this crash will also produce the error. Most recently I was trying to connect my bluetooth keyboard and it kept giving me an error. So I tried to turn off the bluetooth, no dice. Went into the root user, still no dice. Figured maybe the device didn't get reinitialized upon wake from sleep properly, put the unit to sleep and ding dong, wont wake up again!
From the console logs I've been able to find this string:
5/23/10 1:00:54 PM kernel Sleep failure code 0x00000000 0x21000000
I've not used any hacks or sleep widgets, so I don't know what the issue is.
Everytime I reboot from this I fsck the drive and repair permissions. I've tried zapping the PRAM also, next stop is delete the power management plist and reset the SMC. Who knows if any of it will work?
Anyone have any ideas?dchrem wrote:

AppleCare is the magic word. Time to contact them.
Btw the machine is 10.6.3 I hadn't updated my settings before I posted the initial question.
I was actually going to suggest that, but noticed in your later posts you had updated the info.
As for the smc and pram both were done today, so we will see what the story is. I also deleted the energy .plist file and had it recreated from within root.
Just curious why you're working in root? You should be able to do anything we've discussed from an admin account, and there's lots of potential for mishaps in root.
As for dlrunning DU, I was under the impression that it just ran fsck through the DU GUI. At least that's what it looks like when you view the console log for DU. I'll give it a try though.
I'm just repeating what Apple suggests.
I'm just worried that the little glitches are adding up to something catastrophic.

Intel Mac Mini wakes from sleep (for no reason) after installing leopard
My mac mini keeps waking after its been put to sleep (both by selecting sleep by hitting the power button or using the apple menu item.
This only happens now I've upgraded to leopard; with tiger, all was fine.
Any ideas what's going on? The iChat logging in noise blasting through my speakers at 1am last night gave me a bit of a fright! This may be something like a driver, application or external device which is not fully Leopard compatible, or even a component of MacOS if you upgraded to Leopard rather than did a clean install. To start the process of troubleshooting, first download and install the full 10.5.1 update from http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1051update.html , even if you have already updated to 10.5.1 using software update. The full updater has been reported to resolve a number of minor issues.
Next, assuming that doesn't resolve it, start up your mini, put it to sleep and then disconnect everything. If it continues to wake unpredictably, the issue is with the mini itself, and you may be best to backup all your data and do an erase and install to resolve any residual issues caused in the upgrade. If, on the other hand, the system remains sleeping, it points to an external device being the culprit, in which case plug each one in, one at a time until you can create the unpredictable waking again. Whichever component was last plugged in, is the primary suspect! -
Does wake from sleep seem a little different in 10.5.6 from before?
I've noticed that wake from sleep seems a bit different than before. I use my MBP in closed-clamshell mode. Connected are the aluminum Apple keyboard, a Might Mouse (not wireless), and a 20" Apple Cinema Display.
What I've noticed is that upon waking, the backlight comes on (the screen is blank), then there's a slight delay, the display shows everything as it was before sleep, then it flashes blue (my background color) and refreshes, showing what I just saw. It's basically doing the same thing twice -- I guess it's being very sure to check to see whether a display was connected during sleep. There also wasn't the wakeup stage where the screen is dark but the backlight is obviously on.
Has anyone else noticed a change?Hey guys I am new here but not new to macs. I have been using a mac for about 2 years now and when I saw the new Pro's I knew I had too have one. So far I haven't experienced any of the problems I keep hearing about in this forum which I'm glad. Unfortunately I am one of those guys who obsesses about the littlest things and can't let go until I find closure. That being said just about every issue that I have seen on this forum with the new MacBook Pro I have thoroughly checked mine to make sure it doesn't have it. So far so good. So yesterday I followed the update to 10.5.6 and everything seems find with the sleep accept the sleep light indictor doesn't seem to go out completely when sleeping. It dims to a very faint level but you can still see it. Is this a big deal or nothing to worry about?

Has wake from sleep behavior changed in 10.5.6 from 10.5.5?
I've noticed that wake from sleep seems a bit different than before. I use my MBP in closed-clamshell mode. Connected are an aluminum Apple keyboard, a Mighty Mouse (not wireless), and a 20" Apple Cinema Display.

Has anyone else noticed a change?I have noticed my computer will fail to wake sometimes. This update also seems to have affected the use of external monitors, and this function too is acting strange.

Launch application upon wake from sleep
Is there an automator that will launch an application when the computer wakes from sleep? I do video chats w/ my elderly mother via iChat. I can wake her computer from my home using WakeOnLan. However, she sometimes quits iChat so it is not always running. I would like to have some sort of automator set to launch iChat everytime the computer wakes from sleep. I assume if iChat is already running, it would not matter.
If anyone knows how to do this or if it is even possible, please let me know.
Thanks,
RandyGary,
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I ended up using DisplayWatcher as it also has the ability to run an automator application upon waking from sleep. There were some other apps that were too complicated for me -- had to enter Unix commands/code and I did not understand how to do this.
Thanks again,
Randy -
I cannot get the new mac mini to wake from sleep and trigger the displays - this is the second mac mini I have had and both have had the same issues. It worked before on my macbook extremely well...
Using 2 displays, connected via HDMI and thunderbolt
Been on to support a number of times now - is anyone experiencing the same issues?BUMP.
I actually showed this to Apple geniuses when I took my computer to the apple store, and it's still here. In console it says:
kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: -128
I don't know if that's related or not, but maybe helps? -
Mac Mini repeatedly refuses to wake from sleep
Please to anyone I really need your help.
First let me preface you that I know my console log is incredibly long, and let me know if there is a way to make them more manageable and I will update.
Also let me know which other logs or screen shots or active programs I can provide
I have a 2011 2.5 ghz Mac mini i5 with AMD Radeon 6630M
I have customized this with a 256gb SSD and 2TB HDD as well as 16gb RAM.
I also have a Monoprice drawing tablet attached.
My keyboard and trackpad are bluetooth
I am running yosemite 10.10.1.
10.10 was installed with a clean install.
So here is the issue:
The computer was working perfectly, and then, I can't identify a specific time, it started to just occasionally refuse to wake up from sleep (monitor off, won't activate).
Interestingly it seems to have only started happening AFTER I purchased an apple TV which I use to mirror my screen for video playback. Prior to that I had two mac mini's (one hooked up to TV as a media center and one desktop). This configuration resulted in no freezing issues for a few months.
My parents wanted to get an apple desktop so I ended up giving them my mac mini media center and decided to try using an apple TV mirroring with my mac mini instead.
Now the computer seems to work perfectly fine for a day or two and then it just refuses to wake from sleep.
I do a hard reset and it boots up with no issue and everything works perfectly for a couple days (or less), then it just won't wake from sleep at all.
This can occur when still mirrored to apple TV, but also occurs when it is not.
Background programs tend to be: dropbox, google drive, evernote, flycut, Teamviewer, safari and google chrome
Additionally I have noticed that if the computer has been on for a couple days, when trying got mirror it becomes very choppy.
Activity monitor identifies no CPU or memory hogs. (can post if needed)
The console does seem to show A LOT of issues, but I can't make any sense of them, and I have tried searching google for what they might mean.

Display no longer wakes from sleep after latest updates
G4 Quicksilver 933, nVidia Ti, 1.5GB, 20in Cinema Display
I applied the latest updates that were pushed out recently (10.5.2 and the "Leopard Graphics Update") and now my Apple display will not properly come up when I wake the box from suspend.
That is, it starts and runs fine, but if it goes into sleep, upon waking it will (sometimes) flash the contents of the desktop, and then go black. The litte green light is on. Happens from a logged in session, or from the main login screen.
I have to hit the reset or power button (or login via SSH and issue a shutdown) to get it to work again.
I only have a single monitor.
I tried:
o Powering the monitor off and on, both from the switch and by pulling the power cable
o Pulling the DVI cable and reinserting it
o Resetting NVRAM
o Re-applying both the 10.5.2 combo installer and the Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 in order
o Waving a magic wand... I mean, fixing permissions
o Changing the display resolution a few times
o Running fsck a few times (only because all these unclean shutdowns are making me nervous)
o Hitting the "Detect Displays" button in the Displays Prefs panel...
Aha! Hitting that button causes the display to flash and then go dark. I have to power cycle the unit to get the monitor to come up again.
I do have the special build option of the faster video adapter which was available all those years ago. It's quaint now, sure, but it was a fast card back then.
I'm stumped. It's surprising how something like this can turn a perfectly reasonable desktop into a boat anchor.

This Discussion is marked as Answered, but with my apologies to the other respondents, it is NOT. There is a problem. The software/hardware do NOT work as they are supposed to. Apple needs to address this problem immediately. Mac Book Pro will not wake from sleep when connected to a Cinema Display 23". The problem lies in the most recent operating system updates. Before the update the products worked as advertised, since then they do not. Period.
With all due respect, I am the one who posted this, and I marked it "answered." Yes, there very well may be a problem with the Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 (what a mouthful! I dub it "LGU v1.0" from this point on.), but this is so far only a hypothesis.
I found an immediate workaround which suits my purpose. If this does not suit the purposes of completely foreign (to this discussion) symptoms related to Intel-based Apple laptops and external displays, then so be it. I recommend splitting off your own symptoms to a new thread.
Certainly, my reading of the symptoms described after I posted mine mostly do not sound like what I ran into at all. For example, I never once said that my computer had problems waking from sleep. I said the /display/ had problems waking/starting up after sleep, and this is probably related to the "detect displays" mechanism that the OS uses to find attached displays when it comes out of suspend. Even if this is my misunderstanding it does not matter, since this is how it comes across to a reader. This may indicate that someone may want to clearly and carefully describe /exactly/ what they are seeing, and the steps they took in order to come to any conclusions they might have.
This will help Apple, and it will certainly help others that search these threads with their own similar but different issues they need solved.
If there is a common reproducible issue related to displays and the most recent update(s), then Apple already knows about it, or soon will. As far as my immediate needs are concerned, this is answered. -
Cinema Display won't wake from sleep
After reading lots in the forums I've concluded lots of people have the same problem that we are mistakenly thinking is specific to a particular monitor or Mac or behaviour.
Problem: Display suddenly does not wake from sleep - incidentally after an OS update and Cuda update.
Hypothesis: This definitely seems like a software problem as I've solved it in so many new ways. (Some people are replacing hardware!) Once fixed, the problem recurs the next time the display goes to sleep. However solutions rarely work a second time.
Solutions:
1. Zapping PRAM fixes it.
2. Deleting all displays preferences fixes it.
3. Safe boot and clear caches may have fixed it.
4. Pulling the Mini DisplayPort cable and blowing on it has fixed it. (I thought it was dusty since it worked. It may have just been pulling the cable.)
5. Deleting a power management preference in System/Library/SystemConfiguration/ fixed it.
6. Moving the power plug from one slot on a power bar to another fixed it. (***!?!)
7. Creating a new user account fixed it.
8. Now I'm stuck.
Please can help me think of a new way to fix it? If I can get it going again, I will simply keep the computer and 2nd display awake forever.I have a new fix!
8. Launch Magic Bullet Looks app and fiddle with the display settings!!! Woohoo! I got it back again.
As long as the display never goes to sleep and is never unplugged (tried that) I can keep using the monitor. Sadly this means never lettting the new iMac sleep. -
Mac Mini using dual-link to ACD 30" wake from sleep problem?
I have a new mac mini and rather new 30"ACD using the display port via dual link adaptor. The screen looks find but sometimes when I put the mini to sleep and turn the display off, and then turn the display on and wake the mac mini, nothing appears on the display. I don't think it is every time, but it occurs. I have my keyboard attached to the display with the usb connection, and so I can choose from the display options to turn the mac mini off or put to sleep when turning off the display manually. I have used this sometimes but prefer not to.
When the display doesn't show any image I have to hard shut down the mac mini, then start it up and leave the display on, then the image shows up.
Is there a solution to this? I don't mind using any one surefire way to wake the whole system wake from sleep. Either turn off or turn on the option where turning off screen also brings up option to put mac mini to sleep or turn off. Don't use that option at all. Attach the keyboard only to the mac mini directly, etc.
Any solutions would be appreciated. What is the firmware version of your Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter? I've read many reports on how this particular piece of Apple kit is just not working properly (http://www.9to5mac.com/DisplayPort-Dual-Link-DVI-Adapter, http://foliovision.com/2009/12/20/apple-dual-dvi-mini-displayport-adapter-mb571z).
I've seen some people report that running firmware version 1.02 (or now 1.03?) solves their problems. I've also heard that people have had to resort to actually exchange their adapter in an Apple Store and hunt through new boxes to find adapters with the proper firmware version. -
Display Changes Resolution When Computer Wakes From Sleep
I have a MacBook Pro bought in May of 2006. In the last year, this problem has been getting progressively more annoying to me. When the computer wakes from sleep (not every time, but most of the time) the screen will flash blue, then reset the resolution to 640 x 480, I think. To fix it, all I have to do is go to System Preferences and change the resolution, but when I do that, it pops up two windows, like it thinks I have a dual display set up. To fix this, I always click 'detect displays,' and it fixes it, but the next time I wake the computer from sleep, it does it again. This isn't really an urgent problem, but I would expect my computer to behave a bit better for me.
Thank you in advance for any aid you might give me.
LiselHi Lisel. I have a similar age MacBookPro that does the same thing. I don't really know how to fix it I'm sorry, I wish I did cause it's annoying. I just thought I'd let you know you're not the only one with this issue.
Basically, for some reason it thinks it has two displays connected, even when there isn't. To stop it being a total pain, make sure when it does come up with the two Display Pref windows to set them both to 1440x900, at least then when it does go dual display it won't be 640x480 and you can still read stuff.
I've also left the Display Pref icon on the top tool bar (next to the AirPort and Bluetooth and stuff), so I can just click that and Detect Displays. When it does that it figures out for itself it doesn't actually have two displays connected and so goes back to normal.
I know that's a workaround and not a fix, sorry. I'd be keen to know if anyone else has any better solutions:)
Thanks,
Mark. -
My apple thunderbolt display (which I purchased 1.5 years ago; OS 10.7.5 Mac Mini) intermittently goes dark, does not wake from sleep after clicking mouse or keyboard, but there is "bonk" sound after clicking mouse or pressing keys, so am thinking it is a hardware problem with the display. Rebooting by pressing the power button turns the screen back on, but the same phenomenon has occurred several times. Could this be a software issue, or do I need to have my display repaired? Your feedback would be appreciated.
Hi ED, tough to tell, but it does sound like it's waking with the bonk, just not displaying.
Long shot but...
I wonder if it's a variation of this, of which I've seen many different symptoms...
Resolution
Move the mouse or trackpad cursor over the center area of the login window so you can see the user icons. Click on the icon of the user that you would like to login as, type in the user's password, and press Return.
If the login window is configured to show only the name and password fields, type in the user's name and password into the fields, and press Return (even if you cannot see the rest of the login window).
Additional Information
This issue will not occur if the display is not sleeping when the account is logged out. Use the steps below to confirm that the account is not configured to log out automatically while the display is sleeping:
1. Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. Click the padlock to unlock the preference pane and enter your admin password. Click the Advanced button at the bottom, then see if the option "Log out after N minutes of inactivity" (where N is the number of minutes) is enabled.
2. Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and configure Display Sleep to occur after the account is logged out, by dragging the slider to a number of minutes that is greater than N was set to in the previous step.
Important: If automatic log out is not needed, disable "Log out after Nminutes of inactivity" in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. This will also prevent the issue.

MBA won't wake from sleep while connected to VGA Display
Since a few days I'm using a VGA Display connected through the official Apple Mini Displayport - VGA Adapter. However, when I put my MacBook Air to sleep and then close the lid (otherwise closing the lid will just continue on the display). Keeping the monitor attached, it won't wake from sleep anymore. Disconnecting the adapter at that moment won't make any difference. What troubleshooting steps can I make?
I usually...
Take out the charger
take out the battery pack
reinsert the battery pack
Then click the power switch
(if you have low battery I'm sure it would be a good idea to plug in the adapter again -
Hello all,
I have a 14.88G iPod Nano that I currently use as my primary watch. A week or so ago I started to experience a blank white screen when I press the "sleep/wake" button instead of the watch face (I have it set to wake from sleep to display the clock). When I hard reset it, it will come back fine and the screen will respond and work as normal, as soon as I manually put it to sleep by pressing the "sleep/wake" button and then try to wake it the same thing happens and I have a blank white screen that doesn't respond to touch gestures or anything.
What I have tried so far to no avail:
Numerous hard restarts (holding the "sleep/wake" button with the volume - button).
Tried this: iPod nano (6th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
Changed the watch face to display.
Recharged the device overnight (without full discharge).
Since none of this works I'm out of ideas. Eventhough I have a 6G Nano it should no longer be under warranty since I was sent it as a replacement for a different (older) product.
Any ideas? Is this a known problem? Thanks in advance for any insight any of you could provide. Also, what time is it??
Regards,Hey,
I have the exact same problem as you have described. I also used my ipod as a watch but starting from today, whenever I unlock it the screen turns white until a reset is done. Even a factory reset through itunes didn't fix it.
Have you found any solution?
Bah, this is annoying.
