Mini will begin to boot, then shut down.

Hello all,
My 8 month old mac mini has just developed this issue: It begins to boot, displays the Apple Logo, the spinning circle and then an empty progress bar underneath the circle. Nothing ever fills the bar, it disappears and then the machine turn off completely.
This happens every time I try to boot it up - even after unplugging it for a while.
I am baffled!
Thanks in advance,
Stu

It sounds like your Mini is either trying to startup in safe boot mode or it think it's supposed to be installing a firmware update.
I would suggest booting up the computer without any devices connected -- except for the monitor and the power cord.
If the problem is being triggered by an external device, the system should boot up properly. (You can then connect a mouse and keyboard to control the computer -- even while it's on.)

  • Msi 890fxa-gd65 1 beep begins to post then shuts down...help?

Hey I just purchased a 890FXa-gd65 board this week and have a phenom 2 x4 970z in it with corsair 2x4GB 1333 ram thats made for phenom 2, i looked it up on corsairs website to make sure. Im using 2x XFX 5850 graphics and an OCZ Agility 3 sata 6/gbps SSD along with two WD Caviar blacks. This is a new build, although i tried using a phenom 2 x4 965 originally but had same problem. so, i boot up get a single beep the comp begins to post and then shuts down. vie tried dif ram and now have tried a dif cpu. vie tried using only 1 graphics card at a time and switching between 1 and the other. always gets the same response. i do not have the sad or hard drives plugged in either. originally i was using corsair vengeance 1600mhz ram but thought that was the issue because of the speed being to high so i got some 1333 just to make sure and it still is doing the same thing. i really don't know what to do at this point. in the 15yrs vie been building comps for myself and others vie never hit a brick wall like this. any suggestions? just to make sure i tried running just the board ram cpu and video card onto of the motherboard box it came in, as msi tech suggested....still nada

i have a corsair 850HX 850watt. Nevermind It turned out after getting a friend to plug some diagnostic hardware into it we found out it was a dud mobo. I RMAed it and after plugging everything into a new board things worked fine. sorry i wasted your time. i appreciate the help you give to people who need it, thanks again.

  • Why doesn't my iMac boot up? It only keeps re-booting, then  shuts down and re-boots

For some reason, since installing Mountain Lion, I have had a lot of problems with the iMac starting...it keeps re-booting and re-booting...
what can I do to get into my iMac?

Srartup disk Full can destroy your Hard Drive installation.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, or are running 10.7+, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitiion & use Disk Utility from there.
If it starts in Safe Mode, see if you can empty the trash or free up a few GB by trashing files.

Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

Try the usual steps: restart, reset, restore.

If restoring using a backup doesn't help, try restoring the iPhone to factory settings and try for a while with just the Apple-included apps, to make sure it's not an issue with a third-party app. If it still has problems, it may have a hardware problem and will need to be sent to Apple.

  • Fully charged the ipod works for 2 mins, and then shuts down, why?!

Fully charged the ipod works for 2 mins, gives the battery warning and then shuts down. I took it to an apple store, they said battery is fine, restored ipod to original settings and it still wont work! Help!

If you restored to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes (Not via Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content and Setting) and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

  • Mac won't boot, Grey bar appearing at the bottom of Apple Logo then shuts down

    Hi,
I'm using a Late-2011 Macbook Pro and it is running on OS X Mavericks. One day, my laptop just shut itself down and when I turn it on, it won't boot. It just gives me a grey progress bar under the apple logo then shuts down. I tried accessing the DU and tried verifying and repairing the disk but I am unable to copy my files to another drive. It gives me an input/output error. I am not very tech savvy and I badly need my files. Please help!
    Thanks in advance.

    Great.
You have directory damage.  Which os are you using?  You should not use your computer until the damage has been repaired.  Diskwarrior is what these forums always recommend to repair directory damage.  Techtool Pro will work also.
      Both need to be purchased.

It varies. Some do not even last 1 year but others 4+ years.
    Apple provides only 1year warranty.

  • P7-1597c Commences Starting then Shuts Down

    OK this may take a bit; I will start computer with built in graphics running, it will work for a couple of cold starts then try to start and shut down. I will put in my graphics card GE640, the computer will start and work fine I can restart but if I do a cold start it will try to start and shut down; so I will revert back to built in graphics; then install GE630 Graphics Card, computer will start, run fine and same symptom on cold start and the cycle continues. The following are some important additions I have made;
    Added SATA Hard Drive
    Added 750W Power Supply
Added 8GB Ram (I have 64 bit system)
Using HP 27" Backlit LED Monitor & ACER 24" Monitor
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • Mini won't start up or shut down with hd connected

I have always had this issue and hoped it would go away with 10.5
If I have harddrives connected to the mini either directly or with a hub then the mini will not shut down, neither will it start up. Turning the mini results in the grey screen appearing but the apple symbol does not, until the drives are disconnected or turned off then the mi will start up as normal.
I guess this is not a major issue but it is a pain as the mini is my server and lives in a cupboard up stairs which on the occasions I need to do a restart means I have to go up stairs to get it to work!
Is there anything that can be done?
The drives are freecom ones. But as point of reference I have tried the freecoms a lacie brick and a seagate on the mini and they all exhibit the same problem. The freecoms work fine on my iMac and the imac is able to stop and start just fine.
when I first got a mini and detected the problem I took it back to the apple store and they kindly swapped it for a brand new one and still the problem is there.

This is an interesting issue, because I've got a number of minis (mine and others I am responsible for) which all boot and shut down perfectly with external drives hooked up so in itself this should not be a problem.
In general, issues such as these don't get fixed by upgrading the OS or applying updates, and in fact can get worse if they reflect a problem which pre-existed on the system. At best, upgrading the OS can actually make the process of troubleshooting rather more problematic since (as in this case) the new OS can also introduce a number of additional issues which then have to be worked into the mix in terms of finding causes and solutions.
In your case, thew fact two minis have suffered the same thing tends to indicate it isn't directly related to the mini. To counter that, the fact it's happened to a variety of drives tends to make it less likely it's an issue with the drives. As such, I can't help but wonder if the root cause is something in the OS configuration that you've set, or software used on the system. An interesting experiment might be if the system will boot to the install disk by inserting it and holding the C key down during bootup.
Alternatively, it may simply be an issue with the mini's parameter RAM or system controller. You can reset both as follows:
    Reset PRAM
    -Shut down the computer.
-Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in the next step but one.
    -Turn on the computer.
-Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
-Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    -Release the keys.
To reset the SMC on an Intel mini:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
