Mini with BC 5600-S drive

Hi there,
I have an early 2009 MacMini with OS X 10.6.2. The problem I'll discribe shortly happens in all OS X versions since 10.5.6. I have a bootcamp Win7 and before that had a bootcamp WinXP. In both windows versions the drive behaves completely normal, so I doubt its a hardware issue. I also updated the drives firmware to the current 1.03 version with no luck.
The problem: Whenever I put a DVD in the drive, and let it sit there for some time (doesn't matter if I use the DVD before or not) and after quite some time try to access the drive in any way (play the DVD movie, access the data on the drive, even eject the disc) nothing happens. I always have to reboot to be able to eject the disc. I don't mind not beeing able to watch Blu-Rays on OS X for the moment, but this strange behavior is driving me nuts...
Any ideas what is happening, and if this can be solved somehow?

Dah-veed, I also have the Sony Optiarc BC-5600s and have the same problem. (And I know from at least one more user.) It is the first and up to now the only bluray drive what could be used built-in into a Mac mini. (However the guartantee voids, but that risk can be taken for a cool media center...)
On Microsoft Windows 7 a similar issue occured , it had to do with the sleep mode of the drive. (http://www.ditii.com/2009/09/17/fix-for-windows-7-rtm-dvd-drives-inaccessiblity- kb975270/)
On Windows 7 it could be solved with a work around. (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975270/)
Could it be a similar problem on Mac mini and Leopard / Snow Leopard respectively?
Can you give any advise how to doublecheck this?
Or will OS X 10.6.2 contain support for this drive?
Would be great if the drive could be used correctly on the Mac mini, because this would make it perfect for a media center in the living room. I use it as media player for music, fotos, movies from files and DVD's as well as to record from TV to hard disc. For watching Blu-Ray discs I have planed to install Windows via Boot Camp untill OS X supports Blu-Ray and HDCP natively. And I know several people are interested in the same solution as the mini looks great in the living room - one small device to play everything!
So, please help us to use the Sony Optiarc BC-5600s correctly as soon as possible.

I've got a late 2009 mac mini with a 320gb hard drive and I want to upgrade it to a 1tb drive or bigger. What HDDs are compatible with my mini?
Because of the price I'm not interested in solid state drives, unless of course you want to send me $1,000.
I've already got external drives but I take my mini back and forth to work and don't want to carry those drives with me.
I'm not interested in buying a laptop. My mini works great so why waste $1,000 or more when I can buy a 1 to 3 TB hdd for under $300 and have exactly what I want. My late 2009 Mac Mini with a large hdd.
I went to Crucial's website and they can't tell me what drives fit my Mac Mini. That's where I got my ram (8GB). I'm ONLY interested in name brand quality HDDs.

The limiting factor in your 2009 mini is the max 9.5mm drive thickness.
One of the largest capacity 2.5" drives that meets this criteria is the HGST (formerly Hitachi) at 1.5GB
Any reputable SATA HDD you can find that is not thicker then this 9.5mm will work.

  • Mac Mini with RAID - 4x USB Drives

I've got an older Mac mini 2007 Core 2 Duo machine that isn't doing much since I got the MacBook so I thought about using it to replace my Windows Server.
I  did want to have some form of redundancy attached to this server so I hoped to use 4 USB drives of 4tb capacity. I hoped to use two drives "doubled up" to get the capacity I needed (8tb) and another two to "mirror" the first two for redundancy.
I'm aware that OSX has RAID partitioning available but wondered if what I want to do is possible, has anyone tried this setup?

    Thanks both for your thoughts.
I'm now having a rethink myself as USB2 does have limitations I want to avoid, and have come up with options:
A new Mac mini with USB3/Thunderbolt to speed up the throughput (I will be using it to stream HD to Apple TV, for the iPhoto Library and for Time Machine Backups) on which I would use either a Direct Attached Storage solution with RAID 5
    or
A standalone NAS box. Is there a NAS that could do all three jobs? I guess it would have to natively format HFS+ because of iPhoto...and have an iTunes server and be Time Machine compatible. A tall order?
    Thoughts?

  • How to get data off a G4 mini with a failing hard drive.

For the record, here's how I ended up solving the problem - I had to invent this combination of approaches and it's not documented on any Web postings I could Google up during a week of working on this:
Situation: Your G4 mini's hard drive dies (unbootable), AppleJack was unable to fix it, and DiskWarrior 4 can't rebuild it and actually crashes before it reaches its Preview stage.
Why is this situation such a puzzle?
    * When booted in single user mode, the Mini does not recognize an attached Mac in Target mode, so you can't copy your files to there.
    * diskutil can't help you find any attached FW drives since diskutil is unavailable (because sh /etc/rc fails due to disk hardware errors). Even though mount is available, all possible guesses of the attached FW partition name fail ("disk2s2" through "disk7s4" all fail), despite previously confirming what the FW drive or target-mode Mac's partition name looks like to other working Macs.
    * Attaching a USB hard drive fails because the USB drivers fail to load, again presumably due to disk hardware errors.
    * Booting from OS 10.4 (Tiger) Install DVD doesn't help, because even when running Terminal from the Install DVD, an attached Target-mode Mac is not recognized (diskutil shows no attached devices), and since the 10.4 Install DVD does not include mount_fat32, it's also not possible to mount an attached USB drive.
    * Solution! *
Use an OS 10.5 (Leopard) Install DVD to boot the G4 mini. Even though the DVD reports that the old mini is incompatible with Leopard, go ahead and accept that result, and then you can run 10.5 Terminal from the DVD on your G4 mini. Unlike 10.4 Install DVD, this one includes drivers to recognize and mount an attached USB drive, even FAT32 (Windows) formatted drives. So now, in Terminal, you can copy files from your dead hard drive to the USB drive. Whew!
Note: This solution is possible and probably generally useful to people since if you have a dead G4 mini on Tiger, you probably do what I do and go buy a replacement new Mini, which of course comes with a Leopard Install DVD. And generic USB drives are easy to borrow or cheap to buy or you already have one.

P.s. Additional details that might be helpful to people:
    - When you boot Leopard on your old Mini, click "Ok" when it tells you it's incompatible. Then Terminal will be a menu option under "Tools."
    - You'll need to have familiarized yourself with basic Unix file commands (practice on another Mac first, for example). If your hard drive is dying, time is of the essence, so learn your commands before you start up your dead Mini.
    - Tip for Unix newbies: The crucial commands you'll need are ls and cp. http://www.ss64.com/osx/ is a handy reference manual.
    - Hopefully when you run "ls /Volumes" you'll see your mini's dead hard drive listed there as "Macintosh HD" (or whatever you may have previously renamed it). If it's not listed there, you're really hosed. But try again later, maybe when it's as cool (temperature) as possible.
    - The destination path for your USB drive is also viewable with "ls /Volumes", e.g. in my case it turned out to be "/Volumes/Elements" (where Elements was the brand name of the drive).
    - Don't use dd or ditto en masse because the hardware errors on your drive will screw things up. Instead selectively pick out the files you really need to recover and cp them. Be sure to use -p option to preserve file date/time. I used a lot of "cp -Rpv oldminifolder /Volumes/MyUSBDrive" to copy all contents and subfolders from folder "oldminifolder" to my USB drive. It will also be helpful to use "ls -trl" to see the chronologically most-recently-modified files on your old mini so you pick out which files to copy (e.g., files newer than your most recent backup).
Hope this helps, and thanks to the many other posters out there on the Web who taught me many Unix tricks this week.

  • I up graded my mac mini with a new hard drive and now need ios 10.9 how do i down load it so i can put it back on the mac

how do i get the ios 10.9 so i can put it back on the new hard drive

If the Mac mini shipped with 10.6.8 or earlier, install Mac OS X 10.6, update it to 10.6.8, open the Mac App Store, and download 10.9.
If the Mac mini shipped with 10.7 or newer, connect it to the Internet, restart it with the Command and R keys held down, and install an OS. If this isn't 10.9, open the Mac App Store and download it from there.

  • After Yosemite, numerous problems on Mac Mini with Custom Fusion Drive

I have installed OS X Yosemite on a Mac Mini with a "homemade" fusion drive.  The update seems to have completed, although the following problems are evident:
Missing menu items from the menu bar, including the apple menu, notifications, time machine and others
Menu bar items return after booting non-apple software (MS Office, for instance), but disappear again once apple apps are running (App Store).  You can mouse over these menus, even though their respective icons are not there, and access the content within the menus.
iTunes crashes upon launch; app store launches, but no content loads.  Additionally, the app store menu item under the missing apple menu location, shows 4 software updates are available, but cannot load the app store content in order to access the updates.
Safari loads, but enters a continuous loop of "A problem occurred with this webpage so it was reloaded."  Then, a application quit notification window appears, stating "Safari Web Content quit unexpectedly."
Lots of spinning beachball now that was not happening prior to update.
I've tried resetting the machine numerous times.  Nothing seems to fix the problem(s)
The machine seems to recognize the fusion drive in system report, and all files are accessible in finder, so I don't think the fusion drive is the issue.
    Any suggestions, pointers, fixes?

  • Macbook pro hard drive transfer to new i7 Mac Mini with new SSD

I've seen some of the threads on drive transfer but wanted to get more input.  I currently have late 2008 Macbook Pro with 750gb hard drive running Lion latest version.  I bought a new Mac Mini i7 with dual 500 gb drives.  I also have new SSD 512gb.  I want to use SSD as boot drive for Mac Mini and install 750gb drive as 2nd drive.  I know how to remove and install the drives.  What is best sequence, software and procedure to execute the exchange?  Any help would be greatly appreciated in advance.

  • Just bought new mini with lion, need to install programs. How? No CD drive

I need to install InDesign on my new mini but there is no CD drive. How can I get software loaded? I also need to transfer stuff from old mini with 10.4.11 os, Can this be done via firewire?

If you plan on using CD/DVD media in the future, you may as well
get yourself a USB CD/DVD burner.
As for transfering from the old Mini, you can connect with Firewire
or you could connect with ethernet.  Since the "old" Mini was
running 10.4.11, I'm guessing it has FW400 so you will need a cable
and/or adapter to go FW400->FW800.  However, you didn't say
what model so I am guessing.
Also, if your version of InDesign is PowerPC and not Intel,
it will not run on the new Mini.  Lion now longer has support
for PowerPC applications.  The same will be true of any other
    applications.

  • My new mac mini with fusion drive says I only have 36 GB of storage

I have a new mac mini with the 1 TB fusion drive. When I look in storage in the About this Mac area, I'm told I have 6.67 GB free out of 34.62 GB. An Apple rep said that this is a bug in the system and that I have the proper amount of storage available. Wondering if anyone else has had this issue.

I have just gotten of the phone with Apple Support here in Canada, more to let them know about this issue and yes, got the same message. The Fusion drive is very new technology and they have not heard much about this problem either. Their best advice was to wait untill the new iMacs role out with the same drive and see if the same problem is cropping up elseware. Maybe a solutiion will be forthcomming at that time?
Seriously, I must say..... very disappointing Apple! Steve Jobs is probably rolling over in his grave. Since when does Apple role out a product that does not work 100% out of the box? Since when does Apple adopt a "wait and see" approach to possible hardware glitches? Where is the quality control people!!
Even as a die-hard Macintosh fan, I must concede that Apple is loosing "street cred".
Well, I have my complaint logged and will be awaiting further updates regarding this issue, but I won't be holding my breath.
