Mini won't wake up

My Mini is just a couple months old and I've had the problem of it freezing up after a couple of hours of inactivity. I did the Applecare phone help thing last weekend-found no hardware problems, wiped it & did a clean & install etc. I have the sleep mode setting off and no odd apps installed or running. Just the OS10 screensaver mode usually with iTunes playing & 9 Classic.
This was happening quite a bit before and the clean/install doesn't seem to have alleviated the problem. Was hoping someone might be able to help. I've been a Mac user for 15 or more years and never had this kind of problem before.

Gary,
Hi. You'll have to give more details before people can
help. I've had my mini for around 6 months now.
Initially, I've had some problems with my mini
being sleepy. Everytime I try to wake it up, it
would go back to sleep. After doing some digging
around, I noticed that as I did anything CPU
intensive, it would cause my mini to go to sleep.
Looking at the logs showed problems with temperature
sensor tripping. Running the hardware diagnostics
that came with OS X showed that I had a bad logic
board (temperature sensor was bad). You might want
to try running diagnostics on your Mac.
I've used Windows in the past and all I can say
is that power management works on my mac mini better
than it does on x86 hardware running Windows. I use to
hear mac people say "It just works" and, well,
you can add me to that list.

  • Mac mini won't wake properly since osx mavericks

Since I downloaded OSX mavericks, my Mac Mini doesn't wake from sleep. I can see notifications top right of screen and the mouse pointer, so the screen is on and working. Only way to get it going is to hold down the power button to power off and then resatrt. Not very convenient!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Mac mini won't wake from network

Hi, I am confused and need some help.
SInce upgrading to 10.7.2 my mac mini no longer wakes for network access i.e. from ATV2. Worked perfectly before and now it does not.
Also, the screen shows (about once a week) snow on the screen from a wake from sleep. only a reboot solves this.
    Any thoughts?

My Mac Mini server (2011) with 10.7.2 has the same problem since 10.7.2 update.

  • Mac Mini won't wake up

I've had my mini for about 3 months and it worked great plugged into my Samsung 52" display with Logitech wireless mouse and Kensington wireless keyboard.
Recently the mini has stopped waking from keyboard or mouse activity. Once in this mode, the LED on the front continues to pulse, but does not output a video signal. The only way to recover from this state is to hard power down the unit by holding the power button. Upon restart, the unit takes about 15 minutes to fully recover. It spends a small amount of time at the blank white screen and then spends the next 10-15 minutes on the blue screen. After this, it eventually recovers and allows me to use it.
If I perform a regular reset once the unit is responding, it still is taking the 15 minutes to reboot. Additionally, if I let it go to sleep, I must perform the entire forced shutdown again.
I performed the SMC and PMU resets with no luck.
Are there any logs or utilities I should be looking at?
Is it time to take this thing in for repair?
Here is a recent log of the minis ups and downs:

Forced shutdowns can cause filesystem corruption and should be avoided when possible -- and not be used as standard operating procedure.
After a forced shutdown I always run DiskUtility and verify the hard drive.
Your longer startup time is probably due to the Mac trying to verify the system with fsck after the forced shutdown.
    Suggestions:
    1) Run DiskUtility and verify the hard drive; if it won't verify, you'll have to boot from the original install disc (hold down C key at boot -- using a wired usb keyboard) and run DiskUtility from the Utilities menu at the top of the install disc screen;if you can't repair the drive with DU you may have to back up your data and do a clean re-install of the OS; alternatively DiskWarrior may be able to repair a drive that DiskUtility can't.
    2) Get to the bottom of this problem; your current MO is going to cause you more and more grief
    3) Try pressing the menu button on the Apple remote once to wake the Mini
    4) Don't do a PMU reset on an Intel Mini -- Intels get the SMC reset instead of the PMU reset -- the PMU reset procedure is known to cause problems when wrongly applied to Intels.
    5) If you can get your hard drive to verify and you still have problems, reapplying the latest combo update of OSX can sometimes clear up problems.

  • Mac mini won't wake up when connected to TV

I just connected my Mac mini (2009) to my LCD TV via HDMI using a mini-DVI to HDMI converter. Twice now when I switch to another input on the TV for any length of time, then I switch back to the Mac's input, the Mac seems to have crashed. The fan starts blowing like crazy and the power light is off. Help!?

    Gentlemen,
Thank you for your suggestions. However, I had already reset both my PRAM and SMU. (I should have mentioned that.) However, I have a first generation iMac G5 and I had only tried the unplug the power method. So, I excitedly removed the back cover in search of those little LED diagnostic lights and began experimenting. (BTW, the following link was more accurate for resetting the SMU on an iMac: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2094).
First of all pressing the SMU button did not solve my problem.
Let me tell you about my diagnostic LEDs. They all come on and stay on just like they should. When I put it to sleep light number 3 goes out, but lights 1 and 2 remain on (just like they should). However, when I have my external HD connected and then put it to sleep, the third light goes out and then a few seconds after that so does the 2nd light.
For "fun" I restarted the computer without the external HD hooked up. My firewire cable WAS connected to the computer, but not to the external HD. I then put it to sleep and light 3 went out and lights 1 and 2 remained on. Then I took the other end of the firewire and connected it to my external hard drive and LED light 2 went out.
Just to clarify: when the computer starts up with the external HD connected all LED lights light just as they should. It is ONLY when the computer goes to sleep with the external HD connected that it shuts down.
One other symptom to throw into the mix (as if there are not enough). In my last several attempts to start up with the internal power button there has been great inconsistency in getting any response if the external HD is connected. However, if I disconnect the external HD, the internal power button powers it right up.
Any ideas? It seems to me that my external drive is the problem. However, I am hesitant to purchase a new hard drive only to find out that its not the problem.

  • Mac Mini/Mountain Lion sleeps but won't wake up (or crashes) every night.

    Hi everybody,
I have a mid-2010 mac mini server on which I recently installed Mountain Lion 10.8.2 (without server stuff).
Every night, it stops responding. The led is on but the display is off and it does not respond to mouse/keyboard. I even tried remote desktop.
The only solution is the power button...
    What I already did :
    - Reset Pram/Nvram
    - Reset SMC
I also took a look at the console and I found a message that is fired just before the machine stops responding.

    Any clue ?

Hi, I'm quite interested by your issue, because i get the exact same one.
On my mini (late 2012), system doesn t wake up from sleep if it has slept for more than 1 hour.
In fact I get the exact same message as you get in your console.
When I try and wake up system before the programmed maintenance wakeup, it wakes up fine.
But as soon as this programmed time has passed, it just won t wake up, I have to force switch it off via the power button and restart it.
I have nothing plugged on my mini except : AC - Thunderbolt display, and LAN connected to my freebox.
Do you still have the issue or is it ok now for you ?
I'll try in the upcoming days to plug the freebox in the thunderbolt display's adapter instead of the macmini's rj45.

  • Aluminum Keyboard won't wake Mac mini from sleep (sometimes)

I just bought the new aluminum keyboard (wired). Its great, and looks amazing next to my mac mini......except it won't wake mac mini from sleep sometimes. When this occurs, I can tap on any key but the machine won't wake up. The only work around I have is to attach my ipod, which wakes the mini. Oddly this only happens sometimes. I can't isolate any other variable which may be influencing this behavior.
I'm running leopard and didn't think I needed to install the 1.2 keyboard software update.
I called Apple support, and they told me the problem is that I'm using a non-apple mouse (I have a microsoft optical wired mouse connected to the keyboard's USB port). I don't believe them as i've used this mouse connected to my previous Apple keyboard for years and never had a problem.
    Can anyone help?

Regrettably, I can't offer a solution to the problem stated in the title. Instead, I experience the same problem.
    Wireless Mighty Mouse circa 2007
    Wireless Apple Keyboard circa 2007
Bluetooth dongle (a bluetooth thingy connected to a USB port)
Things worked fine until an upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard. Following the upgrade there were several mouse related issues. Those were resolved. One issue remains: waking by use of mouse or keyboard.
The setup (Same for keyboard and mouse)
System Preferences --- Bluetooth --- Keyboard Connected --- Keyboard Paired. The "Discoverable" box is checked.
    Digging deeper
System Preferences --- Bluetooth --- Advanced --- "Allow Bluetooth device to wake this computer" --- This option is unchecked and is greyed out, inaccessible. Two of the other options are checked and available: the options about opening the Bluetooth assistant and the one about prompting incoming audio.
I've searched other posts. However, many of the other posts seem to conflate this Wake/Sleep issue with various connection issues. Thus, the advice given is a bit confusing to this amateur. Might one of you experts have a solution to this annoying little problem?
    Thanks for your interest.

  • Memory RAM upgrade won't wake up after sleep mode

i just recently purchase a pair  16GB RAM of crucial  CT2K8G3S160BM for newegg.com. Yeesterday i try put this on my macbook i7 intel 2.9 processor that crucial said is compatible. but found out everything was good until i close my mac lid for hibernate. What happen is, it won't wake up no matter what i do until a way of reset SMC. BTW i try stick by stick to plug in together with my original 4gb RAM together found out 1 was ok and other one was not. But somehow why the info of hardware show that memory ram 16GB was installed and was OK. Everything was run smooth even booting. The only problem is won't wake up after sleep mode. I already try reset smc, pram, delete startimage, delete powermanagement.file and also sudo hibernate 0-7. Did anyone had this same issue of me. I'm my curiousity will it be the bad ram or software problem.

i just google around and found this two both crucial ram. Both spec are the same but different model no.

  • Mac Mini doesn't wake from sleep, stays black.

I recently purchased a Mac Mini at the Apple store. I'm using an Apple bluetooth keyboard and trackpad. Problem is, when the mini goes to sleep, it won't wake back up. Nothing I can do apart from a hard restart by pressing the start button will wake the computer up. I don't know what to do to fix this. Is it something in settings?

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

  • WON'T WAKE UP WHEN OPENED DURING SLEEP.

this doesnt happen every time but whenever i close my macbook pro to go to sleep and then open it some time later, the screen stays black and the computer won't wake up. i have to close it multiple times and reopen it before it actually does something. Can anyone help me understand why its doing this?

I think this has something to do with the sleep related loss of keyboard response issue that is plaguing MBP with 10.5.1.
I had it happen to mine last night, it freaked me out so I reinstalled Leopard. Let us see how long until the problem crops up again!

  • MBA won't wake from sleep while connected to VGA Display

Since a few days I'm using a VGA Display connected through the official Apple Mini Displayport - VGA Adapter. However, when I put my MacBook Air to sleep and then close the lid (otherwise closing the lid will just continue on the display). Keeping the monitor attached, it won't wake from sleep anymore. Disconnecting the adapter at that moment won't make any difference. What troubleshooting steps can I make?

    I usually...
    Take out the charger
    take out the battery pack
    reinsert the battery pack
    Then click the power switch
(if you have low battery I'm sure it would be a good idea to plug in the adapter again

  • Macbook won't wake from sleep - replaced logic board and batteries already

I have a 13" White Macbook on 10.5.5 that occasionally won't wake from sleep. This will happen with nothing plugged into the Macbook except for the AC adapter. I have done the firmware upgrade, reset the SMC, reinstalled Leopard from the DVDs twice, brought it into Genius and had the ram, sleep switch, and the logic board replaced. There are no bluetooth devices attached to the computer.
I've searched the forums but haven't found a definitive answer yet.

I've experienced the problem as well. I have the new aluminum macbook with all factory specs and no mods, except that I changed it from smart sleep to the original old mac behavior of instant sleep. It is intermittant and with mine, I've noticed that when the screen is open, the computer appears to be completely off, but when I close the computer the light on the front of the computer comes on. The only resolution I've found so far is to hold the power button for 5 seconds for a hard power down and then push it again--everything works fine.
There is indeed a sudden drop sensor, and in fact, it did happen after I accidentally hit the corner of my mac once on a tv while trying to set it down. That could be the answer...we might have to try disabling that because quite honestly, if I drop my mac while its on, I'm going to be more worried about the screen, the case, even the cute little plastic apple than the hard drive (I have backups galore).

  • M70-160: won't wake up from hibernate or standby - software or hardware?

    I just got maaaaaan!!
works fine, but won't wake up from hibernate or standbye !! unless yur gonna wait for awhile!! 15min or something like that!!
After that it will wake and work normally !
I thought it's overheating problem but now just power it on and when the toshiba logo appear if you turn it off, it won't power on again, but after 15min it WILL !!!
    so it's not a heating problem !!
It does that even without HD on it !!
at first it was hibernate and standby problem, now it dose the same with shutdown !!
    what can I do!!
i just bought it guys !! ASP is to far a way !!
is there anyway i can do to fix it !!
i do fix PCs alot but not notebooks !!

thank you for your help and the fast replay, i really really appreciate it.
I'll explain the problem in details, right after hibernate or standby IF you press power button the led goes blue, fan starts, HD led lights, battery led, power adapter led (if its connected), and cd player make sound as if it looking for a CD, and THEN fan stopped, HD led goes off, no sound of CD, leaves u only with power button led ON, a nice frustrating Blue
after waiting, u eventually gave up, turn it off by along press on power button, and then no matter wut u do, simply won't start only same sounds and leds as mentioned previously, nothing on the screen as if its dead !! no logo no nothing.
give it a time ( about 15min with battery connected, or 5min or less with battery out) Press the power Button, THERE U GO, works perfectly !!
same case with shutdown but not always as hibernate and standby (though once it did wakeup from standby!!), but most of the time after shutdown u have to wait 15min!!
no USB flash memory connected or anything else !
i did install winXP pro SP2 on it and installed the drivers and Microsoft HOT fixes also, but problem remains.
i also did recovery from the recovery CD that comes with it, also no good !!
i noticed that if u disconnected the battery the unit needs shorter time to be able to wake up or boot. about 5 min.
wut kills me is that the unit works perfectly and i like it !!! i only got this issue with it !!
so wut i need to know is this: Is there anyway to make sure weather if its a software problem or a hardware problem?
its not easy to go to the local service cuz its in another city!! i need to try first wutever it takes to fix it on my own!
    thank you for your time!

  • Leopard won't wake monitor from sleep on Power Mac G4

I had no problems with my Power Mac dual G4 867 while running Tiger, but immediately after a clean install of Leopard (a fresh install - no third party apps) my Dell 17 inch LCD monitor will not wake from sleep.
The monitor comes on just fine when the computer first boots, but if the computer sleeps, and I wake it by hitting a key on the keyboard, the drives spin up and I can hear that it thinks it's working just fine, but the monitor won't wake.
I know that the computer is working fine despite the sleeping monitor because I can hear VoiceOver working after a clean install of Leopard (if I let it sleep after the Welcome movie) while asking for user information.
I reinstalled Tiger, and the problem disappeared. The monitor wakes reliably from sleep with a fresh, clean install of Tiger. But with Leopard, even turning off and on or unplugging the monitor doesn't wake the screen.
I have reset the PRAM, the PMU, and the Open Firmware (the firmware is up to date). I even opened the case and pulled and re-seated the video card. Nothing seems to work, so I have just set the computer to never sleep. Not a great option, given the insane fan volume in the G4 MDD model.
Thanks for any suggestions anyone can offer.

I'm having similar problems with both a new MacBook Pro and a new Mac Mini, both connected via a Gefen DVI switch to a Dell 2005FPW monitor. Putting the MacBook Pro to sleep while in dual monitor mode will crash the machine. Putting the Mac Mini to sleep won't crash it, but the monitor won't wake—the computer wakes, but the monitor stays black. I can use Screen Sharing to connect to the Mac Mini and restart it (the only fix, as far as I can tell).
I suspect this is a software issue, because my old PPC Mac Mini would usually wake from sleep. The Gefen support people say this shouldn't be happening.
Anyone having this problem should probably post it as a bug at Apple's Feedback page. I think reinstalled, resetting PRAM etc. is probably a waste of time. Meanwhile, don't sleep your monitor.

  • Ipod Touch Won't Wake Up

Hi, I purchased a new Ipod Touch (16Gb) last weekend, and it seems to work fine most of the time. However, every two or three days, when I put the Ipod to sleep (by quickly pressing the top power button) it won't wake back up... and won't respond to hard reset (holding power and menu for >7sec).
When I plug it in to itunes, it says its in recovery mode and must be restored. I restored it, but it still has the same issue every few days.
Should I be taking it back, or is there something basic I'm missing?

    Hey,
I have the same model Ipod with the exact same problem. The ipod will go into sleep mode or after a while i guess turn off, however when i come back to it and try to turn it on it will simply not respond to anything incl. hard reset with home button and on/off button.
When i connect it to itunes it will say it is in recovery mode and needs to be restored, this works fine however today, i did this 3 times. Its basically doing this every time i leave it untouched for half hour or so. Now is it was stated above teh battery might be be drained. This is simply impossible with mine. The wifi is also turned off and therefore shouldn't be causing any fast battery usage.
Now I am taking it into an apple store tomorrow anyway to get it checked out but if anyone has any ideas now that would be great.
FYI. it is updated tot he latest firmware which i think is 1.1.2
Needless to say this is highly annoying seeing as if had this ipod for 2 days now.
