Mini wont activate display after a few hours of inactivity

When my monitor goes to sleep I can usually wake it up. However I notice that after about 4 to 5 hours of inactivity, when its not asleep, my mac wont wake up and is unresponsive to my keybaord strokes or my mouse clicks. The monitor just stays black. Why does it do this?

If you have an Intel Mini, try pressing the menu button once on the remote control. Works for me.

  • Since loading the newest version, firefox crashes after a few hours of inactivity. Vista home is the OS.

Since loading the newest version of Firefox on my computer running Vista Home edition Firefox crashes after several hours of inactivity. If I leave the browser open and return in a few hours, Firefox hangs and a control/alt/delete pulls up "Firefox not responding" and I have to close the application. Upon opening it again I get the Firefox box of oops, do you wish to open a new session or return to the old one. This problem never happened in earlier versions. Also, you tout the newest version is faster - not so on my computer.

if you use vista, try install sp2, and if the problem still there , try google chrome 10.x to see whether it is better, sometimes these sort of problem only happen to some specific websites, and esp. during rush hours of internet, i.e. night hours from dusk to mid-night.

  • Mini Losing WiFi / Internet after a few hours

Hello all, I have a Mini that is about 18mos old, and as long as I can remember I have had this issue, I had attributed it to my AP, but I have since moved and using a different AP and even a different ISP.  After a couple of hours, the Mini will lose network connection, most of the time it shows connected to the WiFi network, but cannot get to the internet or any other devices on the WLAN - other devices on the WLAN do not ever have this issue, including iphones, ipad, MacBook Air, AppleTV, and w32 laptops.  Occasionally it will just drop the connection to the WLAN, despite the remember/auto connect being set for the WLAN network.  There is no effect on if the machine sleeps or not, I can be in the middle of using it and this will happen, I even tested leaving an app that uses internet traffic open to see if it would stay up if there was traffic, and it will not.  Turning off/on wifi resolves the issue when its connected to the WLAN but not working, clicking on the SSID in available networks resolves if it just drops the network.  That fix is fine if I am home, but it is a community computer and the wife and kids are NOT technically sound, so it dropping causes issues, along with the fact that I have LogMeIn installed so I can grab stuff while Im at work.
As mentioned, this has happened in multiple locations, with multiple APs and ISPs, and other devices never have this issue.  I believe the Mini has 10.7 on it, but I will have to verify, at worst it has 10.6.
APs have both been non-apple (one Belkin, one offbrand provided by ISP) - The APs work fine, as this issue does NOT appear on the MacBook, and the issue has appeared on both APs.
ISPs have been Comcast/Xfinity and Consolidated Com.  Same as with AP, never issues with MacBook, always issues w Mini.
I have tried different physical locations to eliminate reception / interference, and it makes no impact.  In fact, the change in AP/ISP comes with a physical move to another house, so that should eliminate that.
This has to be a Mini issue as far as I can see, just a question of if its a HW/SW and what other thoughts there are to try resolving it.
Any thoughts are appreciated - just as a background, only been using Apple machines for about 2 years, but I have worked in IT for over 15, so I have a pretty good grasp for what to look for (I dont mention that to say I know what im talking about, only that I'm not a basic user that cant figure out where the power button is! )

Hi, this has worked for a few...
Though all of these steps may or may not be needed, I'm including them all.
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).
    Click OK.

  • L192W display very blurry after a few hours of operations

    I have a J115 with a L192W , GeForc6100 on board card.
I noticed recently that after a few hours of usage, the L192 screen becomes blurry where every icons, windows or text has a shadow.
If I turn off the power for a few minutes, the problem goes away for a while and then came back.
    Anyone has similar experience?
    THanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

after a couple of months tinkering with different solutions, i happened to see my neighbor on his way to the PC-recycle place to recycle his 12 yo CRT monitor from Viewsonic .  The monitor came with a old (but thick) VGA cord.
I asked if I can try that before he recycles it.   That was the solution.
My guess is that the stock VGA cable that came with the monitor was not shielded properly and it picked up some interferences from some other electrical sources or something.
Anyway hope that helps someone else in the future
PS: I ended up recycling the new stock L192 VGA cable and use the 12 year old Viewsonic VGA cable instead.

I am trying to do a full Time Machine Backup to a new external disk. The backup starts, and it says "Time remaining about 4 days." That seems like a very long time, but the real problem is that the computer "logs off" after a few hours, and the backup stops. The system preferences are set to "Never" for Computer sleep and Display sleep. The computer does not ordinarily log off automatically, but it has done this twice since I started the Time Machine backup.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • IMac - Slowing Down After A Few Hours

After restart, the system is quick.
After a few hours, User Switching and Application launching is very slow.
Lots of spinning red wait time.
Cannot see any process names taking up CPU cycles.
Not sure about the memory situation. 3 hours after restart I'm seeing:

    Active 277
    Inactive 138
    Used 501
    Free 16
    VM Size 7.6G

    Page Out 60662
Any ideas how to chase this problem?
iMac Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   512K, 2G Dual Core

Number one is memory. I can tell you that the new Intel systems absolutely love memory, and judging by your pageouts you're way under what it needs. I've installed 2gb in mine, and on numerous occasions I've checked my Activity Monitor and it's been using nearly 1gb. I'd recommend upgrading the memory asap.
Number 2 is programs. How many are you trying to use at once? 512 won't support many. I don't mean to sound like I'm insulting you or anything... not sure if you've been using Mac long or not... but are you closing out programs after using them or just closing the windows?

  • Macbook Pro suddenly shuts off. screen goes black and won't turn off till after a few hours.

    Hi everyone!
So I've had this problem from my macbook since months ago. It sometimes just shuts off by itself, the screen turning black and won't turn on until like after a few hours (sometimes a day, but sometimes you could also immediately open it just like that.)
When it shuts off and you plug the adapter it is still charging, the lights on the side of the macbook book still lights up just fine if you press the button on the side. the only problem is that it wont open until after a few minutes, hours or days (very unpredictable) (also tapping the macbook helps, I dont know if it "really" helps or not, but it works sometimes.) But when it open it will be working fine until another couple of weeks or 3 or a month (again unpredictable)
I dont know what's wrong with my laptop, please help me. It would be greatly appreciated! thank you so much in advance!

Hold the power button down for 10+ seconds.  Then bring the MBP to an Apple store for an evaluation.
    Ciao.

  • Smb network shares from W7 PC stop working after a few hours

I have a W7 pc sharing storage on my network.
when connecting when first starting my macbook, it connects fine, but after a few hours it drops out, and i am unable to connect to it unless i restart my macbook.
I have been using "connect to server" to connect my network shares, and when i try to reconnect them using this, it just keeps trying to connect, and wont ever connect even after leaving it to try for over 4 hours (connecting when first starting is fine, taking less than a minute).
sounds similar to a problem with the 10.6 server, where smb crashes.
is there a way to restart smb service on the macbook, or even fix it, so that it doesnt have to always be reconnected?

That's normal. Connections to non-server Windows machines will drop after a period of non-use.
and i am unable to connect to it unless i restart my macbook.
That's not normal. You should be able to reconnect at will.

Okay, you definitely have a network connectivity problem. OS X Server is not supposed to behave that way. What kind of network infrastructure do you have? What make/model routers, switches, hubs, whatever? WIred/wireless? What class cabling or if wireless, what class wireless?
is there a way to restart smb service on the macbook, or even fix it, so that it doesnt have to always be reconnected?
Yes. Usually you just disconnect and reconnect at will.

  • WRT54G3G/Vodafone connect card - Network loss after a few hours or sometimes days

I have a Linksys WRT54G3G router with a vodafone mobile connectcard. I did setup the "keep alive" function to the nearest DNS servers to keep the modem alive 24/7. However after a few hours of somtimes after a few days. The modem "hangs" itselves. After a power-up of the modem it's start to work again. This modem is on a project location with no people available to reset the modem. At this moment we use a local timerswitch to reset (power off/on) the modem every 24 hour, but this is not really a solution. We're using the latest firmware. Please advise !

    Re ; WRTG3G-ST Disconnect - I am running 2.00.9 firmware with a Sprint S720 card.
The Router disconnects from the Internet after a few minutes of operation.
I have set 'Auto Connect' to both auto (1000 min)  and manual. and still get the disconnect.
Once it disconnects I cannot reconnect remotely even if I launch a browser or ping.
Pressing the Data Card button does reconnect to the Internet.
Some times it runs for hours.
My 3G signal in this area is not the geatest but I would expect the router to handle that.
Any suggestions on how to keep connected. .

It's not a router problem as I explained in my post. If it was a router problem then I wouldn't have the problem everywhere I go. It is an issue with the software.
Then I guess the millions of people running 10.5.7 with no issues are just hallucinating that their machines are working fine?
I'm not trying to belittle your issues; you're certainly having them and I know first hand how annoying an intermittent AirPort issue can be. (In fact, mine was due to an AirPort driver bug that no one else seemed to suffer from.)
The single best diagnostic you could do is take your system running 10.5.7 to an Apple Store, and try using their in-store network.
If your machine performs flawlessly, it may be a router issue.
If your machine has connectivity issues there, it may be a hardware problem with your machine.
There have been numerous people in multiple threads over the years who swore that an update was buggy because things used to work, but returned later to sheepishly admit that they took their machine in, a problem was found and fixed, and now their Mac works flawlessly with the newer software.
But simply reinstalling 10.5.5 in no way means the explanation of how firmware bugs may be at play here is incorrect.
In the context of that explanation, all you've done is possibly reinstall software that asks to add "2 + 3."
