MiniDisc : Connect Digital or Analog for best transfer?

I'm not the Smithsonian or BBC, but I still want to preserve some
demo tracks from a stereo Minidisc for the future.
That is, if need to tweak the track later in 2010, be sure now in 2006,
to have digitized it well enough.
If connect digital via optical cable then Audio Interface and Logic must
be set to same sample rate as the MD deck, 44.100.
If connect analog then I can set any sample rate that gives more
headroom for manipulation of the audio for a later time.
The Audio interface and Logic can do 24bit, 96 or even 192kHz.
All I'll probably do before bouncing is some volume adjustments
and when bouncing do EQ, Multipres, AdLiter, (the stock Final Pop Master
Inserts) but I want to digitize with enough dynamic range so to not
loose anything if / when tweaking the digitizes stuff in the future.
Advice Please?

Go optical. That way you don't have to go through an extra step of D/A to A/D. I have done this myself with my minidisc player and couldn't be happier!
Good Luck!

  • How do I connect my drive to iMac for best transfer speeds using an adapter

    Hi,
My question is: which port on my "old" LaCie hard drive should I use to connect to my iMac for optimum speed transfer? Should I use an adapter?
I am a pro music producer/songwriter & sound designer. I use large audio files in my AVID DAW Pro Tools 11 application both to read and write constantly.
For this I have dedicated hard drives such as a 6TB Promise Peagasus with Thunderbolt 1. But it's starting to run a little slow due to all the information residing only on this 1 unit.
I want to spread out my audio files on other hard drives as well. The one I MAYBE want to use, is a LaCie hard drive I have had for a couple of years.
Important: I only have 1 Thunderbolt port left to use on my iMac and 1 Ethernet port.
So do I need an adapter and what would be the speed then?
My question is how do I connect it for optimum speed transfer?
It is a LaCie D2 Quadra V2 E hard disk with 32mb cache.
    It has:
    1 FW 400,
    2 FW 800,
    1 High-Speed USB 2.0,
    1 eSATA 3Gb/s.
    I have an iMac 27" Mid 2011, 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 running OS X 10.9.4.
I look forward to your replies.
    Kind regards,
    Michael

Thanks. Yes it is nice. Sounds interesting with your G force. I think I did put the Raid to 5, but cannot really remember. All I know is that when I did use Raid 5, I agreed to use 1 of the 6TB for some backup or security stuff that it takes care of on it's own. I thought it sounded good and safe when I installed it.
Am unsure how to check it.
I just read about the Raid block size which can be set to higher than my 32k in the Disk Doctor app to work faster with large amounts of continues data transfers. But it means that I should perform a new Raid. Not happy at all about this as I am very careful about my audio files.
Yes, I'll definitely go for the Thunderbolt/FireWire adaptor!

  • How to connect multiple Xserve Raid for Best Performance

I like to get an idea how to connect multiple Xserve Raid to get the best performance for FCP to do multiple stream HD.

Again, for storage (and retrieval), FireWire 400 should be fast enough. If you are encoding video directly to the external drive, then FireWire 800 would probably be beneficial. But as long as the processing of the video is taking place on the fast internal SATA drive, and then you are storing files on the external drive, FireWire 400 should be fine.
Instead of speculating about whether it will work well or not, you need to set it up and try your typical work flow. That is the only way you will know for sure if performance is acceptable or not.
For Time Machine, you should use a single 1.5TB drive. It is likely that by the time your backup needs comes close to exceeding that space, you will be able to buy a 3TB (or larger) single drive for the same cost. Also, I would not trust a RAID where the interaction between the two drives is through two USB cables and a hub. If your primary storage drive fails, you need your backup to be something that is simple and reliable.
Oh, and there should be no problem with the adapter, if you already have it and it works.
Edit: If those two external drives came formatted for Windows, make sure you have use Disk Utility Partition tab to repartition and reformat the drive. When you select the drive in the Disk Utility sidebar, at the bottom of the screen +Partition Map Scheme+ should say *GUID Partition Table*. When you select the volume under the drive in the sidebar, Format should say *Mac OS Extended (Journaled)*.

  • Using Air Port for music...do I need a digital to analog converter

I want to play my iTunes library on my old stereo using my iPod Touch as a remote control (that works well with my Bose Wave Radio).  My old stereo is an analog system. When I plug the output of my Air Port Express into my stereo though RCA cable, do I need to use a Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) or is there a DAC as part of the Air Port Express???
    Many thanks,
    Twinz

After doing a little more digging, I find that using a Toslink cable out of the AirPort Express and into a quality external DAC, and then using RCAs to connect to my pre-amp will get much better results out of my stereo. Evidently the DAC in the AirtPort is not great quality.  So, what I'm going to do is hook up the stereo through the AirPort and listen.  If it sounds bad, I'll spring for a decent external DAC.  Many thanks!

  • Breakoutbox for Digital and Analog Output

    Hallo everybody
i need  to design a breakout box with BNC and SMD connectors for Digital and Analog output (the DAQ cards we use are  PXI-6723 for analog and PXI 6259 mostly for the digital an fast AO Channels) I am looking for tutorials and info material for that. On what I have to pay attention what would be a good circuit diagramm design and so on.
Maybe you could give me some tips where I can find good Material about that.

    Hello Sebastian
first of all I'll need some more information about your intention. What exactly are you going to do? Do you want to connect, or divide signals? (Which signals?)
Maybe if you have a look in the manuals of the cards, you'll get closer to this. Here you can find out the pin assignment of the cards.

  • Connect digital analog ground

    Greetings.
I have a mixed-signal Multisim design which I have forward annotated to Ultiboard.  My Multisim circuits use 2 different grounds - net 0 and net DGND.  For simplicity, I would like to prototype a first version of the boards with the grounds logically connected, so I don't need to worry about ground loops being created by the fact that I'm using separate digital and analog lab supplies.
I have checked the box in Multisim under "Sheet Properties -> PCB -> Connect digital ground to analog ground."  I have transferred my design to Ultiboard 11 and specified a 4 layer board.  Layer 3 is my ground plane, with a large copper area connected to Net 0.  While placing components and vias on my board, I'm noticing that the thru-holes and vias I define as connected to Net 0 appear as I expect - with the "+" thermal relief on layer 3.  However, vias logically connected to DGND are appearing on layer 3 with large areas of copper removed (I've specified 12 mils clearance on each copper layer).  If I change the copper area on layer 3 to net DGND, instead of net 0, I notice the reverse situation.  All of my analog ground vias and thru-holes have copper cleared away, and the DGND vias are now filled.
I don't believe a logical connection exists between net 0 and DGND in the forward annotated netlist.  Is there some way I can confirm this?  Did I miss a step in the process while trying to connect these two?

Thank you for your reply, Mark.
I was going to upload my Multisim project file, but then realized a lot of my components are now in my Corporate Database, so I can keep vendor and manufacturer-specific part numberings and inventory quantities all together in the same place.  Instead, I took some screenshots and created a .pdf file.  I uploaded the pdf file to transferbigfiles.com, here.
First, I snipped some sections of my design to illustrate the current state of things.  On the first page, you can see that my default sheet properties are setup such that digital and analog grounds should be connected.  I have an FMC-LPC connector "J17" in my design, with the "DGND" wired to it.  The J17B pin actually represents about 40 different SMD pads on a VITA 57 connector.  The DGND component is from the Master Database under Power Sources, though I think I renamed it from "DGND" to "GND."  As you can see, Ultiboard is showing a lot of DRC errors right now because the vias are set to assume net "0" while the SMD pads were exported as connected to net DGND.
Next page, I unchecked the box "Connect digital ground to analog ground" and forward annotated the changes.  Ultiboard found no differences.
Next I thought that perhaps my renaming of the default Refdes from "GND" to "DGND" could be the problem.  So I went through my design and replaced all of my "DGND" triangles with the DGND component from the Master Database.  As you pointed out, though the component is named "DGND" the Refdes is actually "GND."  I left the sheet properties as is, with digital /analog grounds not connected.  When I forward annotate the changes, I observe what I expect - the DGND connections are removed and replaced with GND connections.  (Next page) The SMD pads are now logically connected to the net named GND instead of DGND.
Finally, I went back to Multisim and tried combining the nets "GND" and "0" automatically by selecting the check box in Sheet Properties.  Unfortunately, when I forward annotate, Ultiboard detects no changes.
Following are 2 relevant sections of my .ewnet file I opened in a text editor, after my latest changes.

    m1doc,
Are you migrating from a Mac or a MS Window machine? Either way you probably should be in touch with AppleCare, you have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. They can usually help on issues like this. If you don't know the phone number please use http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 to help find the number in your country.

  • Digital audio adapter for analog phones

I would like to use the Toslink output and use a digital-to-analog headphone amp for my studio-quality headphones. I can find a digital to analog converter for quite a large sum of money - for me - at around $500.
    1. Does anybody have any ideas for a digital to analog converter that won't break the bank?
    2. Would I be better using USB as opposed to the Toslink/S=PDIF headphone output?
    3. If USB is the better way to go, does anybody have any recommendations for a brand?
    Thank you

    Hi cube60
I'll let you have my old Pioneer Stereo Receiver for a $100, it supports Digital (Toslink) input and you can plug your headphones into it.
Not really, but be aware that you may already have or can find a real nice used receiver that supports digital input for way less than that amp. your looking at.

  • Establish a connection through RF modem's on client & server side & to set up PPP communication for data transfer

    hi
can any1 over here help me out in how to establish connection between 2 RF modem's for data transfer , between client & server USing LABVIEW?
I want to establish a connection between 2 PC's through  RF modem on client & server side & to set up PPP communication for data transfer.
(I have tried data transfer through RS-232 using TCP/IP whn the 2 PC's are connected over ethernet... which is working.
I also tried connecting loopback cable between 2 PC's COM port & geting data transfer using VIsa configure serial port & other visa functions  ... which is working)
can u guide me how to establish connection between 2 RF modem's using LABview?
& how does the data transfer take place between 2 RF modems through RS-232?
    is it using TCP/IP?
If you got any links to go abt this issue do send me related links .. or any examples .....
I am currently using Labview version 8.
    Waiting in anticipation.. reply ASAP..
    thanking you
    Regards
    Yogan..

    Howdy yogan,
Maybe you could clarify a few things for me, and we'll see how we can help ya. TCP/IP protocol occurs through an ethernet connection; RS-232 communication occurs through an RS-232 serial connection, typically through a cable that has a DB9 connector on both ends. Do you mean that the RF modems in question have the option to communicate via RS-232 and/or via TCP/IP ethernet? Specific information like the manufacturer of your RF modems, the model number of your RF modems, and how you connect the modems to the PC would enable us to give you more efficient support.
You can check our Instrument Driver Network (IDNet) to see if a plug-and-play/IVI driver already exists for your RF modem. (You'll need to know its manufacturer and model number.) In the case that you do find an IDNet driver for your modem, you can use this KnowledgeBase article for instructions on how to use the driver.
Another excellent resource to consider is the NI Example Finder. You can access this within LabVIEW by navigating to Help»Find Examples and then searching for serial or TCP/IP examples.

  • What does Apple mean by "For best battery performance, leave your device connected to a power source until the restore is complete."

I just recently returned an IPad air and exchanged it for another. I first set up this new one as a new IPad but then deleted all content and settings right away (since I wasn't getting the progress I had made in apps and games) in order to restore it from my previous IPad Air. I then checked after on how to backup via icloud and saw this line under the subtitle of how to restore from a backup, "For best battery performance, leave your device connected to a power source until the restore is complete." What does Apple mean by "for best battery performance"? Im just a bit worried of issues.
p.s. And yes I did have it connected to the power. And the ios is the default ios for new IPad Airs.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
It only means you should restore whilst it is connected to a power supply, so that your battery doesn't go flat during the process.

  • Using Nokia 1200 CA45 connection for data transfer

I have a USB CA45 connector but am unable to connect my 1200 to PC for data transfer. Is this simply because this entry level phone is not able to connect to PC. If so why does it have a CA45 connector installed?

About my problem above, i followed the process below which is written in the user guide :
"So that you can use a connection by cable, a pilot of cable of data USB must be installed on your PC. You can use the Transfert functionality of data without installing of pilot of cable of data USB. Select Menu > Connectiv. > Câble USB. You can connect your apparatus to a compatible PC using a cable of data USB.
Connect the cable of data USB on the basis of the apparatus. To

Transfer of data - Reach data such as audio or photo files on your computer and transfer them since this one by using a connection by cable of data. To use the Transfer mode of data, take care not to select the type of connection USB in
the parameters Manage connections of Nokia PC Continuation. Insert a memory board in your apparatus, connect this one to a compatible computer using the cable of data USB and, when the apparatus you request to indicate the mode used, select Transfert of data. In this mode, your apparatus plays the part of peripheral of storage of mass and, on your computer, it seems a removable hard disk."
The USB cable used is a Nokia device.

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

  • 16 mm Movie Transfer / seeking rec for best company

    Hello!
I have a bunch of 16 mm movies shot in the 1920s-1950s and I am seeking recommendations for best company for the transfer. Searching this group yielded recommendation for MyMovieTransfer.com which looks like one good option, but it appears they transfer just in 720p. I have reviewed other companies which transfer in 1080p and even some that scan in 2K and 4K. Some companies have detailed descriptions of their equipment including how they line up individual scanned frames optically as superior to mechanically lining up films and many other details. After reviewing those sites I was tending toward the 2K scan as the ultimate quality for 16 mm since I want to do this once for all time before the film deteriorates.
Any recommendations for companies or scan quality would be recommended!

This is a good point as well. I do have the ability to burn Blu-Ray discs and at least commercial discs can be 24 FPS, I don't know about home movies or whether editing can be done in iMovie at 24 FPS. If I need to move to FCPX for this project I can do it. Any recs on transfer company / scan quality?

  • JPA - Best Practice For Data Transfer?

I've been considering an alternative method for data transfer between applications, by using Serialized or Encoded to File JPA Entities. (either Binary or XML)
I know this procedure may have several draw backs as compared to traditional exported SQL queries or data manipulation statements, however, I want to know if anyone has considered or used this process for data transfer?
    The process would be to
    - query the database and load the JPA Entities
    - Serialize or Encode them to file
    - zip up the entire folder with the JPA entities
    - transfer the data to destination machine
    - extract the data to a temp directory
    - reload the JPA entities by de-serializing and persisting them to the database
The reason I'm considering this process, is basically because I have a desktop application (manages member records, names, dates, contributions, etc) used by different organisations in different locations (which are not related except by purpose ie clubs or churches) and would like to have a simple way of transporting all data associated with a single profile (information about a member of the organisation) from one location to another in a simple way, ie users interact only with the application without the need for any database management tool or such.
I'm also considering this because it is not easy to generate an SQL Script file without using a dedicated Database Management Tool, which I do not want the application users to have to learn how to use.
I would appreciate ANY suggestions and probable alternative solutions for this problem. FYI: I'm using a Java DB database.

    jschell wrote:
In summary you are moving data from one database to another. True
You only discussed flow one way. Well the process is meant to be bi-directional. Basically what I envision would to have something like:
    - the user goes to File -> Export Profile...
    - then selects one or more profiles to export
    - the export process completes and the zip archive is created and transfered (copied, mailed, etc) to the destination location
    then on the destination pc
    - the user goes to File -> Import Profile
    - selects the profile package
    - the app extracts, processes and imports the data (JPA serialized for example)
Flow both ways is significantly more complicated in general.Well if well done it shouldn't be
And what does this have to do with users creating anything?Well as shown above the user would be generating the Zip Archive (assuming that is the final format)
Does this make the problem clearer?
