Minidisplay port output logging

Is there a way to monitor output activity of a minidisplay port? Some sort of a logger? thanks.

Thanks for your swift reply .
The make/model of television is Grundig GU19WDVDT. I have tried the displays in system preferences and it shows a list of resolutions including 1080i, 720i and others but when selecting these it does not display any image on the TV screen. The only option that displays an image is 640 x 480 but this does not look good as it is not very clear at all unlike in bootcamp where it can display 1080i perfectly. The overscan option does not help with supporting other resolutions.
The only thing I can think of is the output is wrong for my tv when using OSX but surely it should be similar to Windows 7 on the same hardware.

  • Does the late '09 24" iMac minidisplay port allow for video input as well as output?

    Greetings,
I own a 24" 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with the Nvidia 9400 card.  It's nearing the end of it's gaming life but I still want to use it for everything else after I get my new tower.  Everything I can find in reguards to using an iMac as a monitor for a different computer references the 27" iMac one model newer than my current computer.  Is the minidisplay port on my machine able to accept an input or am I forced to get a subpar monitor for my 2nd machine?  Thanks!
    ~Dan

Only the 27" can be used in target display mode.

When I connect my Mac Mini 2011 with Lion to a TV via HDMI and an earphone cable is plugged in, it´s not possible to choose sound out via hdmi, as opposed to connection via the minidisplay port. Anybody knows how to fix this?

Was just on the phone with Apple about this.
The solution was as follows for me anyway...
    Go to your Finder
    Choose the Go Menu
    Choose Computer
    Choose your Macintosh Hard Drive
    Choose your "Library" Folder
    Choose the "Preferences" Folder
There should be a folder called "Audio"
Move that whole folder to the trash
    Empty the Trash
    Restart from the Apple Menu
    When you are back up and running;
Choose System Preferences from the Apple Menu
         Choose Sound
In the output tab you should now be able to make the HDMI "Sticky"
Enjoy your sound over HDMI and no more dirty knees or broken backs unplugging the desktop speakers!

  • Mac Pro 2008 with Radeon 4870 video useable resolution on DVI limited to size of minidisplay port VGA when displays are mirrored. Did not have this problem until I plugged in new monitor (miniDisplayport), but now it affects even going back original mon

Have been using the Mac Pro since 2008.  Changed to a Radeon 4870 card early this year.   Everything was fine.
Running an old KDS monitor from minidisplay port to VGA and a 1400x1050 projector from DVI out.  Have used the
two mirrored the entire time with no trouble.
The old kDS monitor looked like it was starting to go bad so I got another monitor.  Don't have much room
so it's a 14inchwith widescreen 1328x768 display.  Hooked that to minidisplay port as it only has a VGA input.
Immediately the LCD display took over and restricted the output to the projector.
If I turn off mirroring, I can get projector back to normal.  But this makes running programs a lot more difficult.
It worked fine with mirroring on before the monitor change.  Except going back to old monitor,
now it is affecting things. I pull up display preferences.  If the displays are mirrored, even setting the projector
to 1400x1050, it says "usuable resolution 1280x1024."  It didn't use to do this at all.
Tried reseting NVRAM - no result.
Any suggestions would be helpful.  Just looking at the image on the projector, I don't see any difference from
    before.

    UPDATE:
As noted in the first post, both of these newer USB DAC work fine at 24/96 on my wife's iMac, so it's clear that they didn't both become defective when I connected them to the Macbook Pro at the same time.
Resetting the Macbook Pro PRAM didn't help, so I removed the hard shell laptop case to get to the battery and remove it, then reset the SMC. After that I could use the original DAC at 24/96 again, but only IF it was plugged into the rear USB port. If I plugged it into the front USB port then the sound was garbled and filled with noise. This was a vast improvement over no sound at all.
Then I switched to the replacement/updated DAC, but I got no sound at all from either USB port at any bit-rate. And returning to the original DAC again now results in no sound again.
Sigh... I will reset the PRAM and SMC again, and see how far I can get with this. I'd still love some help. Thanks!

  • IMac MiniDisplay Port 2nd Monitor Setup

Looking for advance on setting up a second monitor.   My current arrangement is unique in that I currently use my iMac as an external display for my dock HP Laptop via a Displayport to MiniDisplay port cable.
So when I use my docked laptop I have two monitors, one is the iMac and the other is an HP LCD monitor connected via DVI.
What i would like to do is have the HP monitor serve as my iMac's external monitor when I'm not using the laptop.  It has an HDMI input, so I've ordered a miniDisplayport to HDMI cable...
What i'm looking for is a switch that would allow me to either manually switch the iMac into the Laptop's external display OR automatically switch when it sees a signal coming from the laptop dock.
I think this would be a MiniDisplay port switch that would allow for two way video.
Any one out there try this?

    Hi John,
I really have no idea, but as a test, hold alt key at cold startup, let it set on that screen for maybe a minute or two, then click the startup volume or hit enter... any change?
Also, if you log out & back in does it show up?

  • Periodic dropping of sound using minidisplay port to hdmi

anyone else get a periodic drop in sound transferred to an external display through a minidisplay port to hdmi converter? if so, is there i a fix to this? there does not seem to be a repeatable time for it to drop, just seems like i loose about 5 seconds of audio at periodic times.

Hi, last time when i use the mini displayport to hdmi adapter, i even don't know how to make it.. It cost me 3 hours. HDMI Port combines Audio/Video Port, really good. However, it often goes wrong. So, i had to use a *[USB to HDMI Adapter|http://www.espow.com/wholesale-usb-multi-display-adapter-for-computer-a dd-on-a-second-monitor.html]* to display 1080P. And of course, usb can't keep up with Mini DisplayPort, at least at transmission speed. Sound can only come out of the mini jack audio output. Although it's more advanced, HDMI is the main stream. So, *[usb to dvi hdmi adapter|http://www.espow.com/wholesale-usb-multi-display-adapter-for-computer-a dd-on-a-second-monitor.html]* is still important for us, though it will be replaced..

  • ATI 5870 can't play from minidisplay port

    Hi
mac pro 12 core, ATI 5870, 12 core - 2,66 ghz, 8 gb ram, sata Tempo e2p card to 2 lacie disks. Bought on sept 2010.
In many occasions I cannot use mini displayport of the mac pro with my two hp 24" (they offer different output: displayport, dvi, hdmi). I cannot use hdmi port too with a minisplay port - hdmi converter (maybe this could be for the resolution?). If the Ati card cannot read the minidisplay adapter so it is impossible to use two monitor!
I had to write "in many occasions" because sometimes the connections works.
Until this morning this configuration worked: for the first monitor a dvi cable to dvi port of the 5870, and for the second monitor a displayport cable with a mini displayport adapter to one of the two minidisplay port on the 5870. This last monitor now remain black, letting the other one going well. If I turn off this monitor the other one become active in single monitor mode. Otherwise it behave like a second monitor.
Is this a 5870 problem? Or.... How can I solve it immediately??? Help please.
SOrry but for me it is difficult to explain this frustrating situation in english but I need a big help now.
    Thank you and bye
    Claudio

To drive 3 monitors you need 2 Dual Link DVI to MiniDisplay Adapters.

  • IMac miniDisplay Port and USB headset

I have recently purchased the Belkin AV360 in order to use my PS3 on my iMac 27".
It works just fine, both video and sound, but I would like to have the sound output to my USB headset if possible.
When I plug in the USB headset, it continues to output sound from the operating system rather than the video that is being displayed from the miniDisplay Port. I assume that by using an analog headset might fix this but I would prefer not to spend more money on another headset if i am not forced to.
So, does anyone know if it is possible to get a USB headset to play audio when in Target Mode?
    as well
If I use an analog headset, would it play audio when in Target Mode?
Thanks in advance for any help/info!

    Hi Patrick,
Now test with just the Hub connected, then test by adding one USB device at a time, most likely one of the USB Drives is having problems.

  • MiniDisplay port to HDMI audio in bootcamp

I'm nearly ready to purchase a new unibody MBP but the lack of a native HDMI port is holding me back from doing so. What I'd like to know is if anyone has been able to get audio output from the miniDisplay port while using a minidisplay port -> hdmi adapter, while in bootcamp Vista/XP?
It's a hassle and unsightly carrying two cables to connect the MBP to an HDTV or HDMI equiped reciever for video/audio presentations.. is ridiculous considering the price of the MBP. Best Buy or Fry's Elec. has numerous laptops with native HDMI connections, but they simply don't have the sleekness of the MBP.

Sorry about that. I've ended up repeating everything you said in the beginning.
Some more digging reveals that it may not be Apples' fault and actually the video card companies whose components they use. Low End Mac has a good article on it (http://lowendmac.com/ed/fox/09ff/displayport-audio.html).
In any case it may be good to get the cable from MonoPrice (http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2009/03/monopricemini_displayporttohdmi_adaptor_handson_hd_itunes_now_plays_ontvs-2/) since it manages to strip the DRM out of the signal so for now you'll be able to watch movies unrestricted and hopefully one day get full support with it.

  • HT3382 What if I want to connect the minidisplay port of a mac book air with the minidisplay port of a monitor? Can I use a the thunderbolt cable to do this connections?

Using mac book air (late 2010) minidisplay port and minidisplay port of monitor Monitor Dell UltraSharp de 23.8" Widescreen U2414H.
Can I connect them using a thunderbolt cable or is there a specific cable I can use to stablish this connection?
    Thanks

A Thunderbolt cable won't work.  Use a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort, or Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort, cable.

(If you use DisplayPort, make sure you use the Input, not Output, port on the display.)

  • I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV?

I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV? I have a MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter, but there are two issues with it: The new display doesn't have a VGA port, and even if it did, I wouldn't want to have my mac constantly attached to the display by a cable. I was looking for a way to use the TV as a display without any wires. Is there some type of bluetooth setup I could use? Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

As I wrote above, I think you should look into the Apple TV yourself. The best place to find information about what it can and can't do and to ask your own specific questions is probably in the Apple TV forum, here:

  • Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) when connecting MiniDisplay Port to DVI

    Hi,
As per the subject, every time I plug in my MiniDisplay Port to DVI while running Windows 7 I get the BSOD right away.
I've updated my display driver to the newest version. I'm now running NVIDIA 8.17.11.9716, 16/03/2010. This doesn't seem to solve the problem.
    Any suggestions?

Is the same Problem there, if you run MacOS?

  • Connect iMac MiniDisplay port to VGA or composite projector, PLEASE!??

I have an iMac and an Epson Powerlite 77c projector I am wanting to link up. I need to go from the minidisplay port in the back of the imac to either composite or vga (female) connection. Apple has a minidisplay to vga adapter which i'm assuming will work.
Epson Projector connections - VGA (female,) Video and audio in (composite), S-video
iMac display connections- Mini display port
Would it be better to use vga or composite for watching movies and using the computer through the projector?
And...if i am thinking of the correct cable i'm also going to need an extension to actually get to the monitor. Since the minidisplay to vga cable is female and so is the vga input on the projector, Is there such thing as male-male vga cable and would it send the signal properly from the imac to the projector?
Is there any other way to link these two devices up? Component switch or wireless transmitter?
    Thanks

Apple has a minidisplay to vga adapter which i'm assuming will work.
    Yes, it will work fine!
Would it be better to use vga or composite for watching movies and using the computer through the projector?
The iMac is not able to connect via composite cable at all. VGA, Mini Display Port, and HDMI (through adapter) are the only types of cabling that will work. Keep in mind that composite is the absolute WORST video quality you could hope for. Here is the scale from worst to best...
Composite, S Video, Component, VGA, DVI/HDMI/MDP (these last 3 are essentially the same quality)
Is there such thing as male-male vga cable and would it send the signal properly from the imac to the projector?
Yes, they are extremely common, and it will work fine. I would be surprised if there wasn't an extra cable of this sort already in the projector bag. It is standard gear for all of my office's projector sets.
Is there any other way to link these two devices up? Component switch or wireless transmitter?
The best connection you can make with the powerlite 77c is through VGA.
