Minidisplay port to VGA problems.

I just got a minidisplay port to VGA adapter and have been trying to connect it to my samsung lcd TV with no joy. What do I need to do?
The TV obviously has a VGA connection on the back but in the menus it seems not to be highlighted as if there was no signal coming through.

    I'm using new 13-inch MacBook Air early 2015. OS X 10.10.3.

Thanks Malcolm - Do you think it might be worth trying to flash the firmware on these cases - there seem to be updaters available on Prolific's website. Obviously I'd have to do it on a PC. I've emailed Prolific asking them about my problem. No reply as yet, and I'm not holding my breath! Do you know if there are any other posts on these boards relating to Prolific? Stupid question really - I'll just do a search...
Thanks again for your post. Cheers from Bonnie Scotland.

  • Connect iMac MiniDisplay port to VGA or composite projector, PLEASE!??

I have an iMac and an Epson Powerlite 77c projector I am wanting to link up. I need to go from the minidisplay port in the back of the imac to either composite or vga (female) connection. Apple has a minidisplay to vga adapter which i'm assuming will work.
Epson Projector connections - VGA (female,) Video and audio in (composite), S-video
iMac display connections- Mini display port
Would it be better to use vga or composite for watching movies and using the computer through the projector?
And...if i am thinking of the correct cable i'm also going to need an extension to actually get to the monitor. Since the minidisplay to vga cable is female and so is the vga input on the projector, Is there such thing as male-male vga cable and would it send the signal properly from the imac to the projector?
Is there any other way to link these two devices up? Component switch or wireless transmitter?
    Thanks

Apple has a minidisplay to vga adapter which i'm assuming will work.
    Yes, it will work fine!
Would it be better to use vga or composite for watching movies and using the computer through the projector?
The iMac is not able to connect via composite cable at all. VGA, Mini Display Port, and HDMI (through adapter) are the only types of cabling that will work. Keep in mind that composite is the absolute WORST video quality you could hope for. Here is the scale from worst to best...
Composite, S Video, Component, VGA, DVI/HDMI/MDP (these last 3 are essentially the same quality)
Is there such thing as male-male vga cable and would it send the signal properly from the imac to the projector?
Yes, they are extremely common, and it will work fine. I would be surprised if there wasn't an extra cable of this sort already in the projector bag. It is standard gear for all of my office's projector sets.
Is there any other way to link these two devices up? Component switch or wireless transmitter?
The best connection you can make with the powerlite 77c is through VGA.

  • Hello! I bought a minidisplay PORT to VGA adaptor and I had two problems.

Today before my presentation I had two problems with the adaptor: first one, part of the mac`s screen was cropped and the second one, after restarting my mac, the initial screen (with the apple logo) was also cropped. And it is still this way.
Could anyone help me ? I would be really appreciated.
    Regards, Guilherme.

  • Mac Pro 2008 with Radeon 4870 video useable resolution on DVI limited to size of minidisplay port VGA when displays are mirrored. Did not have this problem until I plugged in new monitor (miniDisplayport), but now it affects even going back original mon

Have been using the Mac Pro since 2008.  Changed to a Radeon 4870 card early this year.   Everything was fine.
Running an old KDS monitor from minidisplay port to VGA and a 1400x1050 projector from DVI out.  Have used the
two mirrored the entire time with no trouble.
The old kDS monitor looked like it was starting to go bad so I got another monitor.  Don't have much room
so it's a 14inchwith widescreen 1328x768 display.  Hooked that to minidisplay port as it only has a VGA input.
Immediately the LCD display took over and restricted the output to the projector.
If I turn off mirroring, I can get projector back to normal.  But this makes running programs a lot more difficult.
It worked fine with mirroring on before the monitor change.  Except going back to old monitor,
now it is affecting things. I pull up display preferences.  If the displays are mirrored, even setting the projector
to 1400x1050, it says "usuable resolution 1280x1024."  It didn't use to do this at all.
Tried reseting NVRAM - no result.
Any suggestions would be helpful.  Just looking at the image on the projector, I don't see any difference from
    before.

    UPDATE:
As noted in the first post, both of these newer USB DAC work fine at 24/96 on my wife's iMac, so it's clear that they didn't both become defective when I connected them to the Macbook Pro at the same time.
Resetting the Macbook Pro PRAM didn't help, so I removed the hard shell laptop case to get to the battery and remove it, then reset the SMC. After that I could use the original DAC at 24/96 again, but only IF it was plugged into the rear USB port. If I plugged it into the front USB port then the sound was garbled and filled with noise. This was a vast improvement over no sound at all.
Then I switched to the replacement/updated DAC, but I got no sound at all from either USB port at any bit-rate. And returning to the original DAC again now results in no sound again.
Sigh... I will reset the PRAM and SMC again, and see how far I can get with this. I'd still love some help. Thanks!

    Hi BDAqua,

So if i want to use mi iMac27' as screen the pc has to have at least a MiniDisplay Port, no? That's the only way?

  • Connecting DVI Cinema Display and VGA Projector from Minidisplay Port

    Hi Everyone!
I'm trying to get my mid 2011 Mac Mini to send a signal from my MiniDisplay Port to a vga splitter which works fine. My biggest thing is that when I connect my inFocus IN112 VGA Projector the screen shows up from my mac but to connect my Cinema Display it takes VGA so I had to go from the VGA Splitter on one side and use a vga to dvi adapter and my cinema display shows blank? Help Me Please!!
    Thanks,
    Andrew

I already have a converter on the end of the VGA Splitter to go to the Cinema. The reason I don't use the hdmi to dvi is because with the minidisplay port using vga to the projector and the hdmi going to dvi to the Cinema it makes the projector screen very rough and pixely

  • Thunderbolt to VGA problems.

Folks, I just setup two Mac Pro computers (late 2013 cylindrical model) and am having problems on both with Thunderbolt to VGA adapters.  I get a line at the top of the screen that flickers at a constant rhythm of sorts and the desktop doesn't fill the screen.  In fact the dock is pushed a little down  beyond the edge of the screen.
I have two 24" monitors plugged into both computers.  There's no problem with anything plugged in via DVI or HDMI, but it does affect these two brand new out of the box Samsung and HP monitors connected via Thunderbolt to VGA adapters.
I found this link and firmware to try and remedy the problem, but when run it just said it couldn't find a supported MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter.
    Any ideas folks?

I suspect that the firmware is only applicable to one specific brand of adopter.
I have used Apple mini displayport to VGA adopter on my 2013 Mac Pro without problems for 1080p like your HP monitor.
I suspect a problem with the adopter. However, try resetting the SMC and PRAM
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    About NVRAM and PRAM
otherwise try another brand adopter. I would try min displayport to either HDMI or DVI if you can get them and get the right cable

  • I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV?

I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV? I have a MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter, but there are two issues with it: The new display doesn't have a VGA port, and even if it did, I wouldn't want to have my mac constantly attached to the display by a cable. I was looking for a way to use the TV as a display without any wires. Is there some type of bluetooth setup I could use? Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

As I wrote above, I think you should look into the Apple TV yourself. The best place to find information about what it can and can't do and to ask your own specific questions is probably in the Apple TV forum, here:

  • Minidisplay port issue

Hi all, I just got a new Macpro last week. It's been a major pain reinstalling all music programs etc (made the mistake of trying the Migration assistant)
Now my final issue is a wierd one which I'm sure has a simple solution.
I'm using dual VGA Dell monitors and I purchased the Rocketfish MiniDisplay Port to VGA adaptar. The monitor displays don't seem to line up correctly. The monitor coming from the mini port seems to be a few inches lower and if you look at this screen recording you can see what's going on:
    http://screencast.com/t/9lUcr7BP
When I drag a folder across to the second monitor you can see how it displays lower.
The settings for the displays are identical inside the display preferences so I'm wondering if this is the Rocketfish Adapter that's causing this or whether it's a hardware issue.
    Appreciate any insight.

I phrased my reply based on what you  said in your original post,
The settings for the displays are identical inside the display preferences
which I interpreted that you had already aligned the two monitors in the Display's Arrangement tab.  Oh well, glad you got it lined up now.

  • MBA Thunderbold port to VGA projector. Lost touch pad pointer.

I used a minidisplay port to VGA adapter in the thunderbolt port.  The projector recognizes the MBA and I can see the display preference panel on the projector screen.  On the MBA screen I have lost the mouse pointer, but can see it on the projuected screen.  How can I adjust the MBA screen to use the touch pad?
    Thanks

It sound like the calibration screen and the touch "focus" has been shifted to the "primary" display - which is the last added display adapter. I don't have the setup to test, but you might be able to fix by selecting the Touch panel as the primary display (maybe). You may be stuck because the USB adapter will always be enumerated as the last device.
    Perhaps...
    1) Plug in USB adapter to enable display.
    2) Go into display options and select Touchscreen as Primary and make sure "extend desktop" is unchecked.
You may also be able to trick the system by going into DM and removing reinstalling the real primary display adapter.
If all fails, you should be able to unplug the USB device and use MS system restore to go back when it was working properly.
Of course, I am saying all this without having the hardware in front ofme. I've played around with mutiple displays enough to know that you get into some funny behaviour when you have two distinct video adapters installed in the system. The best multi-display solution are those driven from one adapter - one video card with an HDMI and a DVI for example.
If you figure this out, please reply back. I'd like to know if it is possible to keep touch while using another adapter.
... an HP employee expressing his own opinion.
Please post rather than send me a Message. It's good for the community and I might not be able to get back quickly. - Thank you.

  • Minidisplay Port HDMi - DVI - VGA

    Hello there..

I have connected a vga adaptar to dvi adaptar to minidisplay port hdmi.
The problem is that the macosx recognize the model of monitor but in monitor says " no video input"

A mDP to HDMI adapter won't pass analog (VGA) signals. You're going to need an Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter.

  • HT1338 cannot connect my MacBook Air to a projector  -does not detect and 2nd monitor. I have a new Mini port to VGA cable made by apple. When I read online I see that many people have the same problem - Is this an Apple defect??????????????????

I cannot connect my MacBook Air to a projector - It will not detect a 2nd monitor or display. I am using an Apple made Mini Display port to VGA adapter. As I read online I see that many other peple are having the same problem. Is this an Apple defect!!???? If so it just burst the bubble about how great macs are. I never had a problem with that on a PC. I hope I am wrong. What can you tell me?

    Hi There,
I have had the exact same issue but with a projector.
The issue lies with Mountian Lion 10.8.2.
I tried many a combination with no luck to get HDMI working.
Took my mac into the apple store and came to the conclusion it was the software, so I asked them to install 10.8 onto it (this is destructive so a backup is a must)
Bought my macbook home and voila, now displaying through my projector.
There is a small graphics update after 10.8.1 which seems to be the cause.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • MacBook Pro MiniDisplay Port Problems

I have an Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro. I recently ordered a minidisplay port to HDMI adapter off of amazon. I finally got it but most of you can guess what happend when I connected it to an external display. Yep, nothing. I tried numerous times clicking "Detect Display" but it just froze for 3 seconds and nothing happend.
My current setup is the Thunderbolt port to hdmi, then hdmi to VGA. I also have OS X Lion 10.7.4.
I have tried everything including gfxCardStatus and using every setting, turning the brightness all the way down. Putting the mac to sleep and closing it and waking it up with an external mouse.
I have an appointment with an Apple Store this tuesday but im not sure if they can do anything.
Any help would be great! If you need anymore info let me know!
    Thanks!

Okay, now I know. As far as I am aware, there is no way of doing this by default on the Macbook because it's highest resolution is 1280x800. You could mirror this to the LG but of course it won't fill the screen unless it scales the image but again there will be black bars because the two screen ratios are different. if this did manage to scale up and also stretch to fill the entire LG screen, it still woudn't be 1080p resolution, it would be 1280x800 but stretched to fill the screen and it would look a little blurry and distorted on the LG. If the LG has this scale/stretch ability, it will be under the menu system for something like Picture mode or it may be a dedicated button on the remote - the ratio button perhaps?
There may be an app out there that forces the Macbook pro acreen to run at a higher resolution e.g. 1920x1080 and if you mirrored this then it would look fine on the LG as it would be a full 1080p image. Of course, if such a tool does exist, the Macbook Pro screen content (icons, text etc.) will appear tiny and hard to read and it won't actually be running at 1080p on the Macbook screem, it would just appear that way. Maybe others can advise if such a tool exists?
