Minidisplayport-in

Hi guys
I have the new iMac as well as the new macbook pro. I'd like to use my iMac as monitor for the macbook once in a while, but to my disappointment the minidisplayport cannot be used as input, only as output.
I'm thinking the graphics card in the iMac has to connect to the monitor internally in some way, maybe i can intercept this signal if i disassemble the thing. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance...

There is no way to do what you describe. An iMac is a computer, not a display.
In addition to Screen Recycler, which will make the iMac pretend to be a second display for the MacBook Pro (over a network connection), if you just want the iMac to show the MacBook Pro's screen (not as a second display), you can use the Mac OS X built-in +screen sharing+ feature. If you are a MobileMe (formerly .Mac) subscriber, it is especially easy to set up (but you can do it without MobileMe).
However, you will not get the same level of performance as a real display, because the video signal is going over the network connection. Please post back if you want more details

  • HT3382 Does the Apple MiniDisplayPort to VGA adapter allow me to connect a VGA DLP projector as a display?

I want to connect my MacBook Pro i7 that has a mini Dsiplay Port/Thunderbolt port. I want to connect it to my VGA NEC LT20 DLP Projector.
I have the Apple MiniDisplayPort to VGA adapter, MB5727Z/A, Model Number A1307 and the computer does not recognize the NEC LT20, nor does the LT20 recieve the MacBook Pro as a computer or other source.
My previous MacBook Pro core duo with DVI to VGA adapter worked fine with the projector.
Is this because the Apple  MiniDisplayPort to VGA adapter is only for computer to VGA video displays?
Is there another adapter that will allow me to use my particular VGA proejctor with my MacBook Pro?
Has my replacing the old computer with the newer one forced me to shell out big bucks to for another projector, thereby making my ability to give educational lectures for free to audiences impossible?

When you plug the projector into the computer, with the projector on, dose the computer reconize a second a 2nd display is connected?
ie: Menu bar, click on the Apple menu, chose System Preferences, click on displays, do you see an arragment tab?
if you do see an arragment tab, try clicking gather display windows. a window should pop up for the projector. What resolution is it set to? is there a lower resolution you could set?

I am trying to watch movies from my macbook pro (2010) on my new vizio tv.  I connected the minidisplayport to HDMI cable (bought from the apple store) and switched the input to the right input but nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

  • My w2207h HP Monitor is not working on my macbook pro with hdmi minidisplayport adapter. On Windows 7 via bootcamp it works. What can i do ?

As is said my HP w2207h monitor is not working with a minidisplayport to hdmi adapter and a hdmi cable which is working fine for my PS3. So the cable is not the problem. And on my TV i also have no problems at all activating a second monitor. Therefore the adapter isnt the problem either. When i plug it in the typical bluescreen appears. Then after a few seconds it appears again and there is no second monitor recognized. I also used the "recognize Monitor" button without success. Please help me, are there any special drivers or something like that ?
PS: bought a high end expensive adapter now because the old one was very cheap. But didnt help. Still stuck on the macbook not recognizing anything !

If you have an external drive you can hook up to the MacBook Pro I believe there *may* be a solution by getting an image to the MacBook Air.
On the MacBook Pro with the Windows install disk in the DVD drive fire up disk utility.  Select the DVD and then hit the "New Image" button.  Disk Utility should offer to create a disk image from the DVD.  I would put that disk image on a USB drive connected to the Pro.  You should be able to mount that image when you connect up to the Air.  Hopefully BootCamp will be able to access that all through the process.
If that doesn't work (the drivers don't recognize the disk image once Windows gets underway for its install), you might try copying the installation files from the DVD to FAT32 formatted USB stick or drive and then using that to install Windows.  I would expect Windows would be able to see the USB FAT32 drive and I don't believe any file on the drive is going to go beyond 4GB.
I haven't actually tried BootCamp on the Air, since I just use VMWare which has no issue installing from anything OSX can see.  But BootCamp is going to eventually hand off operations to Windows and that's going to complicate matters--Windows has to be able to see the drive.  While I believe there are drivers that let Windows connect to that drive, there's no way to authenticate (or even load the drivers I expect) before Windows itself is loaded--so it's a "chicken/egg" problem.

  • Using a second monitor as the primary display with MiniDisplayPort

I've got a new iMac, but the screen seems to be straining my eyes. I'm trying things like scaling the display, lowering brightness, changing desktop layout, etc, but if all else fails...I'd like to go back to my old external monitor.
So, my question is...if I connected this monitor to the MiniDisplayPort on the iMac, could I use it as a single primary display, or would I have to use it as mirrored or secondary?

    Hi Brian,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  You can mirror the displays or make whichever display you want the primary in Extended Desktop mode.  See this article for details:
How to use multiple displays with your Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5019
The white bar at the top of the left blue box represents the menu bar and determines which display is your primary display. To change your primary display, click the white bar and drag and drop it on the blue box representing the display you would prefer to be your primary display.
    Cheers,

  • Installed Windows 8.1 with Bootcamp but cant use my monitor through VGA-MiniDisplayPort

I used Bootcamp to install Windows 8.1, but when I tried to use my monitor, that worked on the Windows 8.1 preview, no longer works. It's a VGA-MiniDisplayPort. I'm not willing to spend extra money until I need to.

Solved: I figured out the issue was I was using UEFI for the Windows 8.1. Now all I'm doing is attempting to install it normally and so far the monitor issue is fixed.

  • I need a DVI-Video adapter or a MiniDisplayPort-Video adapter to capture analog sources in my Mac.

I need a DVI-Video adapter or a MiniDisplayPort-Video adapter to capture VCR and analog sources. Which is the right one for the Mac Pro (Early 2009 with NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 board)? Because i´ve seen a couple of cables but they say it´s just for Power Mac G5. I need exact model for my mac pro. I found this one but its´ just for Mac Pro with with ATI X1900 XT. The question is which one do I need for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 board? Is is the same one?

There was a similar post just the other day with what I think is the same confusion.  You said,
I need a DVI-Video adapter or a MiniDisplayPort-Video adapter to capture VCR and analog sources.
And the way I read that is you want video input (keyword you used was "capture").  Is that what you really want?  If so adapters you are looking at is for video output, i.e., to send video from your computer to a display device (e.g., a TV or monitor).  If you really want to video input (into your computer) then a simple cable isn't going to work.  You need a pci card that handles such functionality.

  • MiniDisplayPort out to DVI problems

I bought a Mini DisplayPort to DVI cable from Monoprice, and it has some problems. I'm connecting it to a Gateway 1920x1200 monitor. If the resolution of that monitor is set to anything lower than 1280x960, everything works fine. If I go above that, weird things start to happen. Random pixels across the screen start to flicker to white, making the screen appear to be sparkling. Sometimes, depending what I have on the screen, black lines will appear on the screen. If I try to run full-screen video, the screen just turns black. I think the cable is not transmitting data fast enough. Is this a problem with the computer, or will another cable work better?

The native resolution of your 15" MBP is 1440x900. If you are connecting the external display and running in *mirror mode,* you are limited to that maximum. If you switch to *extended desktop mode* you can set the resolution for the external display up to 1920x1200 and possibly higher depending on the monitor (the setting is done in System Preferences > Displays).
It sounds like you are running in mirror mode and your external display itself is set for some higher resolution than the MBP can support in mirror mode.
In my case, I am using the Apple miniDisplayPort-DVI adapter and a monoprice DVI-HDMI cable to connect to my 40" Sony Bravia and it works perfectly.

  • Apple MiniDisplayPort to DVI-D 2560x1600 Monitor Compatibility

    Hi all,
I just purchased a DoubleSight DS-305W 30" display only to learn it doesn't work with the Apple MiniDisplayPort to Dual DVI adapter. I had the flickering issues described in length here:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
I thought it was the adapter firmware issue, so I drove 3 hours in the snow to the Apple store to get a replacement with the new firmware (1.0.3). After doing so, the issues persisted.
I am now wondering if anybody has experience with other 2560x1600 monitors and this adapter. I am considering buying a NEC LCD3090WQXi-BK -- has anybody tried this one? Thanks in advance.

Not that I have seen. My new WS monitor came with the vga cable and also a DVI cable. So I didn't have to buy anything extra to have DVI out. I could choose whichever one I wanted.

  • Mac Mini MiniDisplayPort-to-VGA issue

    Hi all,
We have a brand new Mac Mini in our office (not the one in my sig) connecting to a VGA projector via a MiniDisplayPort-to-VGA adapter. When the Mac Mini reboots the projector loses connection and it can take multiple reboots, repeated plugging/unplugging of all cables and a frustratingly long time to get video back up and running. We've tried usual tricks like applying all outstanding software updates and resetting PRAM, SMC etc.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Regards,
    RT.

This does seem to unfortunately be a universal problem on the new Mac mini with VGA screens.
The apparent best workaround is to boot the Mac without the adapter connected, then after it has finished booting plug the adapter in.
If you can you could try using DVI instead, many projectors support DVI as well.

  • Minidisplayport to VGA adapter - no signal

Hi, we have problem with Minidisplayport to VGA adapter. It seems that when we plug it between the netbook and the projector it does not give any sign of life... the port seems to be disabled. Is it possible?

    I have the same problem!
I tried connecting my macbook pro 13" (latest generation) to:
    1- A data projector
    2- An external monitor
    none work.
I believe that BLUE SCREEN that flashes when you plug in the cable is simply what happens when the macbook recognizes that an adapter has been pluggged in, and it's trying to send the signal out to another video device. I get that blues screen too, and also get that flashing blue screen when I click "detect display" in the video preferences.
Nothing has worked so far. Apple advises unplugging and plugging back in, as well as putting the computer to sleep and then waking up again. I tried all of that and didn't work. Also tried changing the resolution, and nothing. Will go back to apple store ASAP and see if it's a bad cable.
In the meantime, has anybody had the same problem? Or found a solution???
    Cheers.

  • MacMini, miniDisplayPort-VGA Adapter, iTunes(HD)-Video

    Hello,
I just bought a new MacMini (model last 2009)
I connected trough original Apple miniDisplayPort-VGA adapter to a FullHD-Display.
iTunes or Front-row tell me i must connect a HDCP capable Display
(via Analog VGA, that make no sense for me)
EDIT: it is only with HD-Movies bought in the iTunes store
with the old MacMini I dont had this problem (also with VGA connected)
is there a solution for that?
please help (sorry for my english)

HDCP is the Digital Rights Management/copy protection scheme for High Definition media content, and is sent over HDMI connections. Your VGA connection is not designed to carry this information, as it is just an analog signal. You will need to connect your mini via an HDMI adapter, and make sure all the adapters and cable connections are HDCP compliant.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro w/ MiniDisplayPort to HDMI, NO SOUND?

Hey guys, I am having problems setting up my 2011 MacBook Pro to my tv via the MiniDisplayPort.  The visuals are transferred great and I can see everything shows up fine but the sound still plays back through my MacBook Pro speakers.  I have tried going into my SOUND OUTPUT settings but HDMI is not showing up there.  Any idea's on what I could do to fix this?  Thanks, also; If you need more information just drop a comment and let me know

HDMI is frustrating indeed, it either works or it doesn't. Any component can prevent it from functioning. You might try temporarily disabling or uninstalling those other audio output options, to ensure nothing is hijacking your MBP's audio prior to the Thunderbolt port.
Don't forget to investigate the settings for your TV as well, to ensure it is not looking elsewhere for the audio signal.
This is the adapter I use:
Mini DisplayPort | Thunderbolt® to HDMI® Adapter w/ Audio Support
    It just works.
Edit: I would not have thought the technique at the end of this post would work, but apparently it did for at least one person:
HDMI audio out with MacBook Pro (2011)
    Try that too.

  • Using a 1:2 MiniDisplayport to HDMI Converter with my 2009 iMac

    Hi,
So I am thinking about purchasing 2 HDMI monitors to hook up with my iMac. I know that the iMac only has 1 MiniDisplayport so I looked and I found this:
    http://www.buy.com/pr/product.aspx?sku=228682340&sellerid=23413195
I was wondering if I could use this for hooking up two monitors to my mac. If I can, would it be recommended that I upgrade my memory? I currently have 4 GB of RAM.
    Thanks,
    Virgil

    Not sure, see below.
You could hook one monitor up using a mini-diplayport to HDMI adapter.
Mini DisplayPort | Thunderbolt® to HDMI® Adapter w/ Audio Support
    Hook the other via USB.
    USB 2.0 to HDMI® Display Adapter w/ Audio (1920 x 1080)
USB 2.0 to HDMI Audio Video 1080P Adapter for Windows and Macbook
Newer Technology USB to DVI / HDMI / VGA HD Video Display Adapter
    And lastly there's this:
    Matrox DualHead2Go
After looking at the descripton of that Apogee MDPHD2X I am not sure whther it distributes one video input to two HDMI's producing a mirrored display or fakes the EDID information like the Matrox to make your computer think it is one lage extended display.  More research is needed to verify that.

  • Is there a MiniDisplayPort to ThunderBolt connecter?

I have two older Apple LCD displays that I had connected to a MacMini 2009 (by MiniDisplayPorts). I now have a brand new MacBook Pro with two 2nd generation Thunderbolt ports. Is there such a thing as MiniDisplayport to Thunderbolt connecter?

Thank you. I just checked and one monitor in deed has a Mini DisplayPort/Thunderbolt and fits... the other I can only assume is a "non mini display port" and does not fit (they both have the same markings on the connector). I will see if the one that fits works tomorrow (and get back to you). If it does, I will get another Mini DisplayPort for the other one. In any case, thank you very much for the information.
