Minidv - the strangest thing I've ever seen

I started a thread last week asking if minidv was dead. I asked this because it appeared that my Panasonic minidv camera was broken and I wondered if I should make the move to a different format. Bottom line: There was no need to leave minidv at this point in time . . .just get another minidv camera and I'd be fine for the foreseeable future.
As a continuation of that discussion, I have encountered the strangest thing I've ever seen and I'm wondering if anybody can provide insight. I'll try to make a complicated story as concise as possible.
The reason I thought my Panasonic camera was in need of repairs was because large blue streak suddenly appeared across the screen when I played back or recorded video. This was not a problem with the tape, because I checked a few different tapes. In addition, these blue streaks showed up on previously recorded footage that looked perfectly fine when I dumped it to FCP a while ago.
So I bought a used Canon on eBay as a replacement. When I inserted a couple of tapes into the Canon, I saw gray streaks in the same manner I had seen blue streaks on the Panasonic. As far as I could tell, this meant one of two things: 1) there WAS a problem with the footage on the tapes, or, 2) both cameras were malfunctioning in a similar matter.
After an hour of going back and forth trying to isolate the problem, I decided to record some new footage on the Canon. When I did this, there were no gray streaks on playback of the new footage. Out of curiosity, I went back and looked at the previous footage that appeared to have gray streaks, and now the gray streaks were gone.
Wondering if some kind of miracle had happened, I took the tape out of the Canon and inserted it into the Panasonic. Still the same blue streaks on the Panasonic. Since recording a few seconds of new footage on the Canon seemed to be a miracle cure, I decided to try the same thing on the Panasonic. Voila! Blue streaks are gone. I tested other tapes . . .all blue streaks gone from the Panasonic and all gray streaks gone from the Canon.
If recording new footage on the Panasonic somehow magically realigned the heads or something, that should have fixed it last week when this problem first arose on my Panasonic. I tried all these same tests on the Panasonic and the blue streaks wouldn't go away on both newly recorded footage and previously recorded footage.
How is it possible that both of these cameras were working incorrectly in the same manner with several different tapes and then, simply by recording several seconds of new footage, they were miraculously healed? This is bizarre!!!
The only thing I did differently in all this troubleshooting was eat a banana. After that, things were fine. I say that half jokingly, but that is literally what I did. I took a break and at a banana, then 5 minutes later I tried exactly the same things and the cameras worked.
I guess I should be happy that both cameras are working now, but since I have no clue what the common denominator was that caused them to malfunction, and I have no clue how they both healed themselves, I'm worried about using them when I'm trying to record important footage.
Any serious thoughts about how this miracle has happened? (Yes, I know that user error is usually the next thing to consider, but I took very methodical steps to isolate the problem, so I really think the odds of that being the cause are very slim.)

Sounds like dirty heads to me....
I had a similar problem a few years ago. Weird streaks started showing up in my footage, so I used my friend's camera to figure out if it was a problem with the tape or my camera. I ended up transferring dirt from my camera to my friend's with the tape I was using. The footage was ruined, but I ran a head cleaning tape through both cameras and never had the problem since, although I haven't used MiniDV in a few years now.
Sounds like you did the same thing as me....meaning you're right twice: 1) the tapes had dirt on them, and 2) both cameras were having the same problem because the tape was dirty
it seems weird that recording new footage fixed the problem, but its possible that it cleaned the dirt of the heads (temporarily). I'd say buy a couple head cleaning tapes and you'll be fine....and maybe try eating more bananas

  • What’s the strangest thing about the Java platform?

    Hello All,
In an interview (http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/Interviews/bloch_effective_08_qa.html) that I did with Joshua Bloch on java.sun.com, promoting the revised version of “Effective Java”, he discusses generics, enums, annotations, the under-use of Java libraries, the importance of minimizing the accessibility of classes and members and minimizing mutability, and other matters.
To my question: “What’s the strangest thing about the Java platform?” his answer was: “I'm going to say that the strangest thing about the Java platform is that the byte type is signed. I've never heard an explanation for this. It's quite counterintuitive and causes all sorts of errors.”

  • Strangest thing I've ever experienced with fcp

I opened one of my current project files and saw my footage in black and white. Much to my surprise, a tint filter has somehow appeared on nearly all the clips in my sequence. The strangest thing is I have never used the tint filter and has magically appeared on almost all my clips. Anyone experience this before or have any advice?
    Thanks all

  • The strangest thing: My mac doesnt see ONLY Win7 cd

    Hi guys,
Check this out: I bought parallels 5 and Win 7 home edition, in order to put on my mac. Parallels installation was nice and smooth, i created virtual machine and insterted Win 7CD. (official)
And here came the strangest thing: my mac doesnt see it! I ejected the cd, and put in other cd (in this case Starcraft 2), and voila it works, the install image pops up and i see the cd in finder. I put in this very Win 7 cd in the other mac...and it works, finder sees it and i can access it.
However when I put it back in my macbook pro, it keeps spinning it and seems to think its blank, cause iDVD pops up after 2-3 minutes. Parallels 5 doesnt see it, Finder doesnt see it either. What could be the problem? Any ideas welcome
P.S. just tried this Win7 cd on G5 (OS 10.4.6): no problem, took it to the shop and tried it on the shop's MBP: no problem. Tried inserting other CD's in my MBP (as mentioned above they were Parallels, Starcraft2, and Snow Leopard): absolutely no problem. But when i insert this Win 7 CD in, my MBP doesnt recongize it. My brains are fried as I cannot think of one single possibility of what might cause this strangest issue. (tried another Win7 cd, same thing)
    Mac OS X 10.6.4/ Mac Book Pro 2.66 Intel Core DUo/ 4GB
this Mac was bought in October 2009 from official store

Actually, it's not that strange at all.
Apparently due to the type of media Microsoft burns the disks on, some drives just don't like it. I had to make a copy of a Windows 7 DVD on my Mac Pro because the drive in a PC refused to read it even though it had no scratches or damage and the drive would read every other disk fine. When making the copy of the disk in my Mac I found that the Apple-shipped SuperDrive would read the disk but my aftermarket DVD burner in the second drive bay would not.
So, your options are to image the drive on another computer and burn a copy, or track down a USB DVD drive and install it from that.
Parallels will install from an ISO so if you can image it on your G5 and then just copy it over the network it will work. You can also enable CD drive sharing somehow, but I've never done that before.
EDIT: I wanted to comment that all the drives I have encountered that would not read the disk were TSSTcorp drives.

  • Adobe Updater- The worst updater i have ever seen

ok, now i would lik esoem adobe devs feedback n why this installer takes an incredibly inordinate amount of time to do its thing. I have seen many a mac installer over the last 10 years, but adobe's are just getting worse and worse. the updaters work sometime, sometime they dont. On a dual 2x2ghz mac pro, it took upwards of a half hour to run updates to 5 programs. thats amazing by any feat of the imagination.
i am trying my best to update acrobat. it just wont do it. now its just peachy if adobe can tell me why, but i figure thats a long shot. through adobe's own updater(which itself needs to constantly update itself, wtf), it refuses to update acrobat. just ran it for the last round of updates amongst the cs3 apps, and nada. still at 8.0. so, i downloaded the singular installer. upon launch, it quits.
    so...what do i do now?
    thx
    -ed

There seems to be something special about the FIRST admin account ever set up on a Mac OS X machine. Try logging in as that account and running the update. Note that there are two or three updates related to "flash" that take 45 minutes to install on a G5 while giving you no progress updates.
If that doesn't work, try activating and logging in as root. This is dangerous, but usually effective for me. Google will show you how to do it on your OS.
    Good luck.

  • G580 Keyboard/Touch Pad/Mouse doing the strangest things

I hope I am posting in the right section. Either way, I hope that someone would have an idea what the hell is happening with my laptop. It was working fine for a couple of months, and out of nowhere, from yesterday it started doing the craziest stuff I've seen any PC/Laptop do.
The buttons on the left don't work at all (the num pad numbers). The numbers above the alphabet keys write only symbols e.g.: 12345.. --> !@#$%..., and nothing can change that. The windows key doesn't work at all, and other strange keyboard behavior. And that is not all. On top of that, when I click an icon on the desktop, all the other icons become marked as well, and when I open "This PC" (win 8.1), it opens not only "My computer", but 10 more folders. I cannot undo it, it does that in every folder I go in, it just marks everything, and even if I click on empty space, they still stay as "marked".
Things get even more strange. The problem is not fixed by restart, safe boot or restore point (I tried them all), it is fixed by restarting the PC, but while its booting, I spam F2+F8+F12 at the same time, and when the laptop loads, everything works just fine, like nothing ever happened. But when I restart it (without spamming the F2+F8+F12 keys), it goes bad all over again...
I have never seen such strange behavior out of a laptop, like ever. I am sorry if my description of the problem is not good enough, but I hope someone has the slightest idea what is going on.

    hi daniel2215,
    Welcome to the Forums.
The weird behavior of the number keys only shows symbols and all the icon on the desktop gets highlighted by clicking only one icon is most likely caused by a defective shift key as it's the same behavior when you have icons listed vertically and you hold shift key and click the icon at the bottom (same goes to folders).
    Things that you can try:
    1. Use Passmark's Keyboard Test to check the input of the keyboard keys
    2. Use a live cd (i.e. Ubuntu Live) to isolate if the issue is OS level. If the same thing happens to the live OS, you most likely have a defective keyboard and you need to contact lenovo for service.
    Note:
For models preloaded with Windows 8, you may need to turn off UEFI, Secure Boot, and OS Optimized Defaults to Disabled/Legacy mode/Other OS mode for the Live OS to work.

  • Funkiest thing I"ve ever seen in iMail!!!!

SO my wife is on her macbook using iMail and it suddenly closes on her. It gives her the standard " do you want to close/ reopen " option so she clicks "reopen". A minute or so later imail reopens, but she has all MY EMAILS from MY EMAIL account. She is afraid she lost all her emails ( though I'm sure I can get it back or atleast use safari to check her webmail).
Has anyone ever heard of this, or know how to prevent it from happening again? Better yet ..Why would this happen, letting her into my emails??
    Thanks!

Is your mail account a .Mac account? Could it be that your .Mac account was set up initially on what is currently your wife’s user account on this computer and the corresponding settings are still stored in System Preferences > .Mac?
Repeated crashes may cause Mail to discard the current ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist preferences file and create a new one:
Reopening an application after it unexpectedly quits
Mail may reset to default if it unexpectedly quits twice in row
This file is where all the account settings are stored. As a result, all the non-.Mac account settings are lost. If you have a .Mac account, that account would appear to have been preserved because Mail would set it up automatically using the System Preferences > .Mac settings.
When this happens, there are at least three ways to restore the account settings:
    (1) Restore ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist from a backup if you have one. Mail shouldn’t be running while you do this.
    (2) Set up your mail accounts again (you may want to quit Mail and trash the new com.apple.mail.plist first to start over). If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done. You’ll also have to re-configure some of the Mail > Preferences settings. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    (3) Mail may have renamed the old preferences file to com.apple.mail.plist.saved. If that’s the case, you may try trashing the new com.apple.mail.plist and renaming the old com.apple.mail.plist.saved back to com.apple.mail.plist. Again, be sure Mail isn’t running while doing this. Given the circumstances, there exists the possibility that com.apple.mail.plist.saved became corrupt, but that often is not the case and the settings can usually be restored by just renaming the file back to com.apple.mail.plist.
As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • WRT54G2 - The Strangest Problem I have ever encountered

Ok, this will take a bit of explaining but I hope someone will be able to help me out. I've set up lots of networks but never run into anything like this before. I may be including more info than necessary, if so sorry but I am not sure if it is important or not. I have a brand new WRT54G2 router. I set it up and it was working beautifully, except it wasn't quite reaching the other end of the apartment. I am cheap so I looked around craigslist for a range extender. Found a cheap, new Belkin F5D7130. The ad just said range extender. I figured it'd be a universal one and but it wasn't because you have to input the RE's Mac address into the router which linksys ones don't do. I saw a post on another board saying you could get it to work by putting the routers MAC into the REs Bridge page. Did this but the signals were getting confused so I admitted defeat and unplugged the RE.
I thought everything was cool cause my Eee was picking up the normal signal fine and I was busy surfing the internet when my roommate comes and tells me her internet is not working. I quickly check my larger comp and internets not working there either. My big comp is connecting to the network and can access the router page but not the internet.
It has an ip you'd expect 192.168.1.100 with a normal default gateway etc.
My Eee is connecting to the internet fine(it's what I am typing on now) but can't access the router and it is giving me a strange ip 72.253.190.209 with the default gateway 72.253.184.1.  Both of these are getting their ip automatically.
This is odd I thought so I did the first thing everyone trys, I did a full reset of the router. I figured back to factory settings and I'll put everything back to normal. After the reset everything is still eff'd up but with the SSID back to linksys.
Eee still has the odd ip and default gateway but is working fine.  My other PC is still not connecting to the internet but can access the router fine. I tried plugging the ip info from my Eee manually into my other comp and connecting but got no connection.
The router status page shows nothing for the host name or Domain name while the ip, subnet mask, and default gateway are all reading 0.0.0.0 No DNS's show and the MTU is 1500 Before anyone asks, yes they are connected to the same router, my router.
Frankly I have not a clue what is going on or how to fix it and my roomie is getting angry that I eff'd up the router and now her internet doesn't work. Any help or suggestions someone can provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
More weirdness right as I was about to post this, my Eee’s internet stopped working and my big comp’s started to. Upon closer inspection they have switched ip’s and all the other info. Everything in the router is still the same. God I have no idea what is going on! Please someone help a girl out
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Sounds a lot like you have connected your modem to a numbered port of the WRT instead of the internet port. The 72.253.190.209 is a public IP address which you have got from your ISP (in Hawaii if whois information is correct). This means your computer establishes the internet connection directly through your ISP basically bypassing the WRT.
The most likely reason is you did not connect the internet port of the WRT to your modem.
It could be that you have a USB connection to the modem as well through which the computer establishes the internet connection.
If the router has some hardware trouble and it won't boot up properly it is possible to directly connect to the ISP even when wired correctly using the internet port to the modem. But if the other computer without internet still can open http://192.168.1.1/ this is probably not the case.
Some other routers pass PPPoE through the router. This way a computer which is configured to automatically establish an internet connection using PPPoE can connect to your ISP bypassing the router. As many ISPs only allow each customer to have a single internet connection at a time this would block the router from establishing another PPPoE connection. A computer connected to the LAN of the router should never try to establish an internet connection with PPPoE.
If this does not help, please open a command prompt window on the computer which has internet, enter "ipconfig /all" and post the full output of this command on that computer. Next, on the other computer open the web interface of the router, click on the Status page and post the full status information as well.

  • The strangest thing

I recently bought a new iMac and set up my 2 gmail accounts through apple mail. One account is behaving as it is supposed to (getting mail from the server and leaving a copy on the server) the other account keeps deleting the messages off the server.
I can not stress this enough, I set both accounts up within minutes of each other, they are set up exactly the same. (No, the "delete message after downloading is not checked on either
Originally I had set them up with POP (the default) and yesterday changed them both to IMAP, the same thing is happening

    Hi,
The tilde (~) in the reference the other poster provided means your Home folder -- the folder that results when you click on the icon of a house in the Sidebar to any Finder window. The reference file will be in the Preferences folder of the Library folder found there.
With the original issue, if only using IMAP accounts, you might also simply remove them, and add them back in the Mail Preferences.

  • Unknown error code 13014 problem, this is the first time I've ever seen it.

After I upgraded my PC, I copied old libraries and music files from the old hard drive to the new one. I installed the newest version of iTunes (8.0.2) and when I plugged in my ipod, I saw something I had never seen. Guess what it is?
    'Unknown error code 13014!'
I had no problems for using every function that my iPod touch and iTunes have (including Genius play list) and of course, I've been updating every version of firmwares and iTunes programs. After I googled about this incident, I figured out this problem should not be seen on the newest version of iTunes but I'm still surffering from it.
Temporally, I turned off Genius Play List and now, that error code doesn't pop up but of course, I can not use Genius Play list because of it.
I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, restored firmware, moved Library Extras & Genius.itdb and do them again and again. Of course, none of them worked.
What can I do? Is there anyone else who is experiencing same thing to me? How can I get my Genius Play List function back?
Please Help me. I'm desperate. :<

Did you properly prep your new drive first?
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.  If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Complete the OS X installation.
I think you should shutdown the installer then erase the drive per the above and start again.

  • The best thing i have ever done is throw my msi k8n neo platinum in the trash

Ive never been so happy to get that crap out of my system i tried everything to get it to run smooth i blamed everythign else in my system the memory the psu.  Theres no stable bios ofr this board they all suck big time.
I pluged in my new dfi lanparty ut nf3 250gb turned it on it worked installed xp first time no problems at all i was amazed.  Overclocked it from 2.4ghz to 2.58ghz without touching voltages in 10mins thats how easy it was.  If i touched anything on my msi board it  itself.
    Good riddence msi

Was this the only MSI product you've tried? Could have just been a quirky board. It happens. Don't give up on a brand due to one bad experience. Try another MSI product if you get the chance. If you have bad results again, then form an opinion. Somehow though, I get the feeling there was a short between the keyboard and the ground.    MSi still loves you and so do we.
Funny thing is, I bought that same DFI board before my MSI Neo....the DFI arrived DOA. RMA'd and second board ran for about 2 weeks before it died. Went to DFI forum and other review sites, it seems that DFI Lanparty boards have a problem with dying out of the blue. So...
Don't forget MSI when your DFI goes BYE as then you might be SOL. As for my opinion on DFI, they can KMA.  :-*
