Minimal KDE Install & Other Questions

I attempted to install KDE, but aborted because of all the bloat that comes with it. Being a tired Gnome user, I can't stand bloat. All I want is a minimal, but usable KDE. But I also don't want it to be too minimal. Any advise?
I have a question about updates. In Ubuntu, the system updated painlessly (most of the time). Is it "generally" that way in Arch, or do updates sometimes break things? I haven't been an Arch user long enough to know.
What is with the awful OpenOffice performance? I have J2RE installed. In Ubuntu, it was heavy, but there wasn't a type delay!
Last, but certainly not least - CUPS. I can't live without CUPS. I type and print out a LOT of school related papers (which is why improving OO performance is almost equally important). I've been a Linux user for over three years, so I'm decently experienced. I just can't keep up with the CUPS Wiki, though. Are there any easier guides out there? I print to an Epson Stylus Photo 825 (which has excellent drivers) that's connected to a Windows PC on the network. I'm not sure about the host or printer name, which has been another set back.

1 - install kdemod http://www.kdemod.ath.cx/
2 - Everybody talks about how Arch never breaks the system on updates, even if you have 600MB to update. There is only one change for this to happen. You don't read. Example: when arch switched to udev, pacman showed during months a message saying that devfs support was going to be dropped. So, the only "pain" is to read pacman messages after upgrades (that is no pain)
3 - OpenOffice performance is more than well. it boots it about 10 seconds. There's also no type delay. My brother switched from arch to ubuntu, and one thing that he misses from arch is the speed.
4 - CUPS? Just install cups, start the daemon and add it to rc.conf so that it gets started automatically on after rebooting.

What is in a minimal KDE install?

Hi all,
I love the philosophy of Arch in keeping things simple. I also like KDE and am trying to install as few packages as possible. I know to do a minimal KDE install, I do this:
pacman -S kdebase kde-l10n-yourlanguagehere phonon-vlc
My question is: what does this minimal install include? I don't need lots of games and screensaves, but things like Kate, Konsole, Dolphin, Konqueror, System Settings, archiver, file diff, universal file viewer (Okular I think), etc... are very useful. I also like the visual effects, like fading and what not. So what does the base include and what do I need to install to get the things above I want? A quick Google search and I found this:
konqueror konsole kate kdiff3 kde-misc/konq-plugins kde-base/dolphin kde-base/okular
But what about the themes and visual effects?

How about running this command and finding for yourself?

There's no kde-l10n-yourlanguagehere package, you have to pick one for your your language.

Arch with minimal KDE didn't work

I have installed kdebase with required dependencies but something is wrong when I trying to startkde.

I have installed xf86-video-ati for HD5670. My actual machine had this problem, but when I installed to kdebase a full KDE the problem has been fixed, but I'd like to have minimal KDE...

Good KVMs + other questions

Ever since Apple started offering up their Intel computers, I've been drooling for one. So I'm gonna bite the bullet and get a Mac Mini Duo (with employee discount from friend woohoo!). I've had a Mac before (iBook G3 with Jaguar and later Panther) but have since given it away as a donation. It got too outdated and someone else could've benefited more than I could from it.
I will have it running on the same keyboard, mouse, speakers, and display as my PC, which is my main machine (mostly for gaming and development work). So what I need is a simple (but quality!) KVM that has 2 USB ports (possibly three, I use my Wacom quite often), an audio in, and a DVI or VGA adapter. Does anyone recommend any particular product? Everything I've been able to find has PS/2 ports everywhere and no audio-in. Preferably inexpensive... $40-50.
And, my other questions... is it possible to install and boot Tiger from an external Firewire drive? The mini comes with a cruddy 5400rpm drive, which I guess could be good for storing music, photos, etc, but completely useless for running an OS and applications on. Is this at all possible, or should I just settle on getting an overpriced 7200rpm laptrop drive and dropping it in the mini then cackle while i throw the 5400rpm off a 22 story apartment building?
What's an inexpensive source for memory that'll fit in the mini? And is there any way you can have them drop one 512 stick in the mini instead of 2x256? Or would this be impossible?
Last one, kind of... how reliable are they? I know they're first-gen, and I generally don't trust first-gen hardware. They've got two beefy Intels in there, so I can imagine heat being an issue - is it? My flat is generally cool or cold. It'll get above 70 in here for maybe one week a year (gotta love San Francisco). Any other issues I should be aware of?
Very last one! Everyone with a Duo, how do you like it? Would you marry it? When I first got my iBook I wanted to marry it, but California state law prohibits it.

I purchased mine at CompUSA for $69.
It is pretty nice. It's got a single button to toggle between two computers. And if one computer is already in use, then it will automatically switch to the other computer when you turn it on.
For example, if I am using my Mac Mini, then the switch will automatically switch-over to the PC when I turn on the PC. Then, when I turn the PC off, the switch will automatically move back to the Mac Mini.
But, I can use the button any time I want to toggle / switch between the 2 computers.
This switch has 2 USB ports, 1 VGA video port, 1 Audio in port, and 1 Audio Out port.
I have found that you can easily share multiple devices on the USB ports.
For example, I have my mouse plugged into my keyboard, and then the keyboard plugged into the first USB port on the Belkin KVM switch. Then, I plug my USB printer into the second USB port on the KVM switch.
So, if you have a keyboard with multiple USB ports, or a USB Hub, then you would be able to share multiple USB devices between both computers.
In my arrangement, I am sharing a keyboard, mouse, and USB printer. Additionally, I have a pair of speakers and a monitor shared between the two systems.
Everything works pretty good, and I don't really have any complaints. I'm actually quite happy with the setup.
I found several places online to purchase it, but purchased it on CompUSA's website. I placed the order online, and picked it up in the store (had my wife stop in on her way home).
I've had mine now for around 6 or 8 months. It's been working good for me.
As for the hard drive, yes OS X Tiger will boot perfectly fine from an External Firewire drive. I ran tests with mine, and found that the External FireWire 7200 R.P.M. Drive did return better performance than my Internal 5400 R.P.M. Drive. However, my external 7200 R.P.M. USB 2.0 hard drive returned significantly worse performance than my internal 5400 R.P.M. Drive.

It's a great risk-free place to purchase from. Their prices are very close to the bargain prices, but they definitely know Macintosh computers and supply compatible modules.
As for first generation systems, I'm not sure that Apple's First generation is much different from their 3rd. My luck with the different revisions of the iMac G5 were absolutely terrible. The only Mac's to have practically every part die frequently. They weren't able to fix it in 3 revisions. So, I wouldn't expect that you'll see much change in the first 3 revisions of the Intel systems. Best bet is to buy now, or wait until 4th or 5th generation.
It took them 4 tries with the current iMac systems to get it right. The new CoreDuo is experiencing much less trouble than the 3 generations of G5 systems.
So, I'd either take my chances now (if you need the system today), or wait until you see the complaint levels dropping.
Fortunately, the Intel Mini's don't seem to be experiencing the same level of complaints that have come out of other recent Apple systems (MacBook Pro (Intel), iMac G5, PowerBook G4, etc.).

11G release 2 Minimal Software Install

Hi,
After analysing an 11G release 2 home directory i verified that ctx and owb directories wastes more than 1 GB... I don't use ctx (oracle text) neither owb (oracle warehouse builder). can i remove those 2 directories? I am preparing VM templates and I want to minimize the download size at all cost. Is there an option to disallow OUI to deploy these components?

ctx + owb + apex + assistant seed database = about 1.2Gb ... a lovely gigabyte I won't waste :) I explain:
We are an ISV and we're creating VM templates do be distributed on DVD. Oracle Linux + Oracle Database + Weblogic + Forms Reports + Our App
So, every hundred MB are useful. Surely you know that a normal DVD only allows 4GB of data ;)
It's a pitty Oracle does not provide a minimal database install like Oracle XE. Oracle XE is available on a RPM with about 200MB...
So, this is why every MB is important for me...

Kde install fails: library error

Hi
I did a pacman -S kde and chose to install all but accblty,network,sdk. I left it for nine hours ( for slow speeds over here). Then it had to interrupt and I ran the command again. This time it downloaded the rest from current.
It then procedded with fixesproto, libfixes, xorg-server 1.1.1,mesa expat, dbus, avahi, muzicbrainz upgrade forom testing ( horrors, I just enabled this repository)
The errors
checking package integrity done
loading package data done
error following file conflict were found:
libstdc++5:usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5: exists in filesystem
libstdc++5:/usr/lib/libstdc++.s0.5.0.7: exists in filesystem
wrrors occured no upgraded
Dont know why this happened, could you help

I had the same problem on an installation of 0.7.2. I just deleted the two files and KDE installed with no problems. BUT, later, I installed again from scratch. This time I did # pacman -Syu before any additional software installation, and I didn't get that error.

Do you mean you can't see the instructions on what to do if there is no UpperFilters entry?
If so, here's the relevant instructions for that step:
On the right side of the Registry Editor window, right-click the UpperFilters entry and choose Modify from the shortcut menu.
Right-click the empty white space within the right-hand portion of the Registry Editor window. From the shortcut menu, choose New > Multi-String Value.
Name this new value "UpperFilters" (without the quotes). Then, right-click the newly created UpperFilters entry and choose Modify from the shortcut menu.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

Is it that you are using a PDF-based form? Did you copy and paste the Yes/No fields all the way down your form? If so, then all of the yes/no boxes are copies of each other and have the same name and properties in the PDF.
For example, if you had:
     Question 1 and Question 1 Yes/No checkboxes
     Question 2 and Question 1 Yes/No checkboxes
     Question 3 and Question 1 Yes/No checkboxes
     Question 4 and Question 1 Yes/No checkboxes
Then whatever answer you selected in Question 1 would populate down through the rest of the form.
Changing the Yes/No field properties in questions two through four would eliminate the problem.

Everytime I connect my iPod Touch (4th Gen) to my laptop, running Win 7 (64 bit) I get the message "The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes" I have reinstalled iTunes several times and it has not fixed the issue. I am running ver 10.2.2.12 of iTunes. I HAVE NOT installed any other burning software to my laptop either. I haven't tried uninstalling iTunes and then re-installing it yet. Would that perhaps fix the problem? I've read that many users have had issues with the new version of the software and I was wondering if that might be causing my issue. I'd like to point out that iTunes seems to work after getting rid of the message, but I haven't tried to burn any CDs or put music from a CD to my laptop. Any ideas on how to get rid of the annoying message?
I also am having trouble hooking up with our other computers using Homegroup. I noticed quite a lot of people are having the same issue and hopefully they come up with a fix for that soon.

I'd start with the following document, with one modification. At step 12 after typing GEARAspiWDM press the Enter/Return key once prior to clicking OK. (Pressing Return adds a carriage return in the field and is important.)

If you're still getting the error message (especially when you plug in the Touch), I'd check for a device filter confusion on the PC. (They can affect the connection of USB devices to a PC, as well as burning and importing CDs.) For that one, see:

I have just tried to install the full version of Anthill to my iPod touch Gen 4. I get a message on the iPod saying "Anthill failed to install" and an error on the computer "OxE8000004". I already had Anthill Free installed so deleted it in case it was interferring with the new download. I can install other free apps but now can't even install Anthill Free. I have tried the 7 resolution steps advised by Apple and have totally run out of ideas as to what I can try next. I am using a new laptop since installing Anthill Free the first time and am now running Windows 7, otherwise everything else is the same. Any help would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks.

EXSP24 in LE7 and other questions

I have worked out that the sampler instrument editor in LE7 has been removed which is kinda an odd upgrade from Logic Audio 6 imo. If i have this wrong please let me know.
So how do I go about adding in new instruments from sample cd's etc??
I am used to running Logic Audio 6 on my old Imac in System 9 so the new or apparent lack of Logic Folders etc is quite bizarre for me. So if anyone can also throw me some pointers on:
1: Using Reason adapted for Recycle as a rewired instrument in LE7 (I have a feeling this is not possible)
2: Using Absynth within LE7
3: Will something like Kontakt run in LE7?
4: Rewiring Logic into Live or vice versa.
So many questions

You can't edit EXSP24 instruments but you can import several formats:
Akai, Soudfonts, Giga, SampleCell and DLS.
To create your own patches you need some external apps like this:

About other questions and supposing that you don't have a Intel Mac:
1. Yes, you can.
2. Logic uses plugins in Audio Unit format; if you have an older version of Absynth you should upgrade to a newer one.
3. Same as above,
4. Logic can act as Rewire host only so you can rewire Live to Logic but not Logic to Live.
