Minimal System for an x-enabled "Emacs typerwriter"

I have an old Thinkpad X31 on which I would like to instlal Arch.  It has an ancient 32-bit centrino CPU and is mind-numbingly slow by today's standards, but is in many other respects a beautiful machine -- light and sturdy and with a beautiful keyboard.
I'd like to install a very stripped-down system that would let me quickly boot up and log into an x-session running Emacs.  Not much else needs to work -- just a minimal X, something to manage my wifi connections (Network manager or connman?), a power-management tool, and the dropbox daemon so my work ends up syncing with other computers.  It would be a way to work distraction-free.
Does anyone have any suggestions about what packages to install, and what precaustions I can take to keep the system from getting too bloated & slow?  I would love to hear your advice.
Thanks,
Matt

And what exactly do you mean by a minimally workable X system?  The word workable makes it sound subjective.
If you want minimal, how about a very basic Xorg setup (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/xorg#Manually) with netctl managing network connections (install netctl, iw, wpa_supplicant, and dialog) and read this nice wiki page on power management (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Power_management).

  • Optimal & minimal system for HDV

    Hi all.
I have a client who wants some recommendations for buying a computer and monitor for editing HDV. When it comes to editing, I'm almost always for buying the latest and fastest, but I've read about some problems with the dual 2.7 G5 and HDV (I believe I read it in this forum, but couldn't come up with the post when I searched again). The client has the footage captured to a LaCie drive. I'm assuming it is a FW800 drive.
In Apple's white papers, the minimum requirement...
1 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM, and 167 MHz bus speed required for HDV playback
That seems like it would be a pain to work with though.
    My questions are,
1-What is the absolute minimum you would work with?
2-What would you suggest working with?
    Thanks,
    jack

    Hi Jack,
I really do not think it is possible to answer these questions in general, as expectations will differ. Also: is that editing including colour correction or will that be done externally? What is the target medium? This pretty much defines the monitoring capabilities needed... and so on.
I have edited HDV on a G4 1.5GHz PowerBook with 1.5 GB RAM (dictated by the need to show something to the client at the end of the day) using a LaCie FW800 hard disk. It does work, but it is painfully slow, even considering that the actual FW800 throughput on a G4 is better than on a G5.
I also gave it a shot on my iMac 2.0 GHz with 1.5 GB RAM (which I normally exclusively use for doing music with LogicPro). Performance is OK, but it cannot be extended with PCI cards, does not have sufficient resolution for 1:1 display of 1080i and it only supports mirror mode for external monitors... that's pretty much the end of the story.
I have tried several configurations and this is what I ended up with and for the time being I am happy with it: PM Dual 2.7GHz with 6.5 GB RAM, added FW800 PCI card (to have separate busses for external HD and HDV) and DecklinkHD Pro card (single-link), HDLink adapter to monitor on a second 23" Cinema Display, G-Tech 1GB FW800 disk. I capture directly from the HVR-Z1 because the price/value relation of the Sony HDV deck is a joke. It is cheaper to get a FX1 just to use it as a deck and a door stop if needed.
So, back to your question, a system used for HDV editing must be expansible, so IMHO the PowerMac is the only thing that makes sense. Performance-wise the smallest model should be ok. I found (I increased RAM incrementally starting at 2.5GB) going from 2.5GB to 4.5GB a big improvement, going from 4.5GB to 6.5GB not relevant (anyhow the 6.5GB make a big difference using eg. Motion). I might be too extreme here, but I want to preview my stuff 1:1, so using a DecklinkHD together with HDLink and a second 23" CinemaDisplay is currently the most convenient option I know of... of course this is for editing, not for colour correction. That's why I went for the Pro version of the Decklink (it has analogue out). It allows me to use a regular SD monitor.

  • Looking for an XML-enabled database system

    Dear all,
I am looking for a RDBMS (Relational Database Management System) that provides management of XML data in a relational fashion.
I found the IBM DB 2 XML Extender. However, I am not sure if this system is already in use (because the latest release was in 2003).
I would be very grateful to you if you could help me to find what I am looking for.
PS. For RDBMS handling XML data, we find two categories: XML-enabled systems (they store XML data using a special data type like BLOB, CLOB,...), or the native XML systems (which stor XML data in its hierarchical structure, so the fundamental unit of storage is XML document). So, I precise that I am looking for an XML-enabled system and NOT a native XML system.
    Thanks in advance.
    Best regards,

    Thanks for your help,
To be more clear, I am looking for an XML-enabled database system (which provides only relational techniques to manage XML data).
Oracle is a Hybrid system (it means that it provides both native and relational fashions to manage XML data, e.g. you can store XML document as XMLType column (native way) or using BLOB data type (relational data type). I am collecting information about the three broad categories of XML database systems (native, XML-enabled, and Hybrid), and I would like to give example of each system. For example, there is BaseX and eXist-db for the first category (native systems), Oracle and IBM DB2 for the third category (each of theme manage XML data in both native and relational fashions). However, for the second category (XML-enabled systems), I don't find more information about the existing systems, there is for instance postgreSQL which is an XML-enabled system, but I don't find more information about its architecture, its XML data storage model, API for querying and updating, and so on.
Please don't hesitate to help me if you get some documentation about postgreSQL or about another XML-enabled database system.
    Thank you again.
    Best regards.

  • Creating a boot disk with minimal system

I just upgraded to Tiger. I have an external FireWire drive that has two partitions. One (large) partition is for a backup of my Mac's entire hard drive. The other (much smaller partition) is a boot drive - that boots from Mac OS 9. It's time to update the OS on the boot drive (and put a copy of Retrospect on it - in case I ever need to recover from a disaster).
My question is, how do I install a "minimal" system (10.4) on the smaller partition, and make it a bootable drive. The partition has 4.0GB of space. (I hope 4 gigs is enough.)
I apologize if this question is already answered elsewhere on this site. I looked in the knowledge base and in several forums and couldn't find the answer.

    Hi Clinto
Those 'minimal' installs date back to a time when you could run a Mac with just the System, the Finder and a couple of extensions. (Well I exaggerate but you know what I mean.)
They would omit most extensions, inits and control panels (QuickTime, AppleScript, networking, printer drivers etc etc), the idea being that you could squeeze the bare bones of the OS onto a floppy and boot in an emergency.
When you install OSX you are offered options not to install printer drivers or foreign language packages. And that's about as minimal as it gets. All the key technologies do get installed, along with the standard-issue applications like Safari, Mail, TextEdit... They're inextricably linked in a way that the elements of the different Classic OS's never were.
The page referred to above says you need a minimum of 3GB of install space for Tiger.
    Hope this helps.

  • Confusion with OCFS2 File system for OCR and Voting disk RHEL 5, Oracle11g,

    Dear all,
I am in the process of installing Oracle 11g 3 Node RAC database
The environment on which i have to do this implementation is as follows:
    Oracle 11g.
    Red Hat Linux 5 x86
    Oracle Clusterware
    ASM
    EMC Storage
    250 Gb of Storage drive.
    SAN
As of now i am in the process of installing Oracle Clusterware on the 3 nodes.
I have performed these tasks for the cluster installs.
    1. Configure Kernel Parameters
    2. Configure User Limits
    3. Modify the /etc/pam.d/login file
    4. Configure Operating System Users and Groups for Oracle Clusterware
    5. Configure Oracle Clusterware Owner Environment
    6. Install CVUQDISK rpm package
    7. Configure the Hosts file
    8. Verify the Network Setup
    9. Configure the SSH on all Cluster Nodes (User Equivalence)
    9. Enable the SSH on all Cluster Nodes (User Equivalence)
    10. Install Oracle Cluster File System (OCFS2)
11.Verify the Installation of Oracle Cluster File System (OCFS2)
    12. Configure the OCFS2 (/etc/ocfs2/cluster.conf)
    13. Configure the O2CB Cluster Stack for OCFS2
BUT, here after i am a little bit confused on how to proceed further. The next step is to Format the disk and mount the OCFS2, Create Software Directories... so and so forth.
I asked my system admin to provide me two partitions so that i could format them with OCFS2 file system.
He wrote back to me saying.
*"Is what you want before I do it??*
    */dev/emcpowera1 is 3GB and formatted OCFS2.*
    */dev/emcpowera2 is 3GB and formatted OCFS2.*
*Are those big enough for you? If not, I can re-size and re-format them*
*before I mount them on the servers.*
*the SAN is shared storage. /dev/emcpowera is one of three LUNs on*
*the shared storage, and it's 214GB. Right now there are only two*
*partitions on it- the ones I listed below. I can repartition the LUN any*
    *way you want it.*
*Where do you want these mounted at:*
    */dev/emcpowera1*
    */dev/emcpowera2*
*I was thinking if this mounting techique would work like so:*
    *emcpowera1: /u01/shared_config/OCR_config*
    *emcpowera2: /u01/shared_config/voting_disk*
*Let me know how you'd like them mounted."*
Please recommend me what i should convey to him so that i can ask him to the exact same thing.
My second question is, as we are using ASM, for which i am gonna configure ASM after clusterware installation, should i install Openfiler??
Pls refer the enviroment information i provided above and make recommendations.
As of now i am using Jeffery Hunters guide to install the entire setup. You think the entire install guide goes well with my enviroment??
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/hunter_rac11gr1_iscsi.html?rssid=rss_otn_articles
    Kind regards
    MK

    Thanks for ur reply Mufalani,
You have managed to solve half part of my query. But still i am stuck with what kind of mount point i should ask the system admin to create for OCR and Voting disk. Should i go with the mount point he is mentioning??
Let me put forth few more questions here.
    1. Is 280 MB ok for OCR and voting disks respectively??
    2. Should i ask the system admin to create 4 voting disk mount points and two for ocr??
    3. As mentioned by the system admin.
    */u01/shared_config/OCR_config*
    */u01/shared_config/voting_disk*
Is this ok for creating the ocr and voting disks?
    4. Can i use OCFS2 file system for formating the disk instead of using them as RAW device!!?
    5. As u mentioned that Openfiler is not needed for Configuring ASM... Could you provide me the links which will guide me to create partition disks, voting disks and ocr disks!! I could not locate them on the doc or else were. I did find a couple of them, but was unable to identify a suitable one for my envoirement.
    Regards

  • System for ~ 1300 €

    Hello,
I am going to set up a new system for PPro, After Effects and some C4D. That is what I came up with so far:
    1 x Intel Core i7-2600K, 4x 3.40GHz, boxed (BX80623I72600K)
    1 x ASUS ENGTX570 DCII/2DIS/1280MD5, GeForce GTX 570, 1.25GB GDDR5, 2x DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort (90-C1CQ60-X0UAY0BZ)
    1 x ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3, Z68 (dual PC3-10667U DDR3)
    2 x TeamGroup Elite DIMM Kit 8GB PC3-10667U CL9-9-9-24 (DDR3-1333) (TED38192M1333HC9DC)
    1 x Fractal Design Define R3 schwarz, schallgedämmt (FD-CA-DEF-R3-BL)
    1 x Thermalright HR-02 Macho (Sockel 775/1155/1156/1366/AM2/AM3/AM3+/FM1)
    1 x Seasonic X-Series X-560 560W ATX 2.3 (SS-560KM) (semi-passiv)
    4 x Samsung Spinpoint F3 1000GB, SATA II (HD103SJ)
    1 x Crucial m4 SSD 128GB, 2.5", SATA 6Gb/s (CT128M4SSD2)
After reading Harms article about SSDs I am thinking about not buying the SSD.
Here on the board I have the feeling that there is a tendancy for the EVGA version of the GTX 570 and for an ASUS P8P67 EVO instead of the ASROCK Z68. Am I right? Can someone tell me why? Also Corsair Vengeance RAM seems to be preferred but I could not see the point of 1600 RAM. Am I missing something?
It is the first PC I build after 10 years so every recommendation is very welcome!
    Cheers
    Erik

    Erik,
With that PSU you will likely get into trouble. 560 W is really minimal, you are better off with a Gold label 750 - 850 W PSU. You can check your requirements by going to eXtreme Power Supply Calculator Pro v2.5
and getting the Pro version, setting CPU load to 100% and capacitor aging to 30%. Then add 10 - 15% for safety to the calculated wattage.
You are going for the unlocked version of the 2600, so persumably you may consider overclocking. Then 1600 memory will be most welcome. Also, Teamgroup is a rather obscure brand and I don't know how reliable such a brand is. The Crucial M4 is a good choice for the boot drive, but if you are in a budget squeeze, that is the first thing I would lose.
I tested the start-up time of Audition (3s), Dreamweaver (7s), Encore (5s), Photoshop (7s) and Premiere (7s) using a 150 GB Velociraptor. Keep in mind that this disk is slow in comparison to more modern disks, even with the 10000 RPM spindle. I really wonder if the alleged improvement in loading times of SSD's are worth the price difference. So far I have not heard from SSD users that their loading times are faster and this is measured up to the moment that the splash screen is displayed with the project to open.
    Hope this helps.

  • Minimal Authentication for BAPI calls

    Hi,
We use SAP Jco Library to connect SAP systems in our applications. Within the aplication we make BAPI calls to the SAP system for various operations. A typical BAPI calls we make are BAPI_DOCUMENT_CREATE, BAPI_DOCUMENT_GETLIST, BAPI_EQUI_GETLIST etc.
For these BAPI calls it is must that the user needs SAP_ALL and SAP_NEW profile added to his profile. I would be interested to know what is the minimal profile the user needs to make these BAPI calls?
Is there a document/link which talks about the minimum roles\profile needed for different BAPI calls byt the user.
    Regards,
    Naveen

there's a couple of notes on that:
    [452508|https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/452508] describes RFC-connects coming from a portal.
[129795|https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/129795] does the same for connect via Session Manager
... there are a couple of others - a quick search in SMP will reveal the others.
as for your BAPIs: obviously you will need the authorizations for whatever the BAPI wants - some BAPI's require transaction code, several organisational values - e. g. creating CS-orders uses most of the I_* objects as well as the t-code for IW31.
But that is about all - you do not need SAP_ALL and/or SAP_NEW - in fact: try to avoid it - reduce the RFC-users to what they need and no more. Keep to using BAPIs for your development, as they are much more trustworthy (securitywise) than other RFC-FM's/methods.
In the SDN security forum are some sticky threads where you might find additional information in that direction. Its worth a look, Julius goes to great length of pain to make them interesting.

  • Meta JCo connection issue - cannot have 2 systems for ESS????

I have a finance R/3 system and also an HR R/3 System.
    I need to be able to use the FI system for the timesheet ESS screens and the HR system for the others.  I have used the iView Application parameter as documented;
    (sap-wd-arfc-useSys=SAP_R3_HumanResources:FIN&sap-wd-arfc-useSys=SAP_R3_HumanResources_MetaData:FIN)
The JCo destinations have been configured and do work ....
However the problem is that the meta data jco connection that is used first appears to be cached and is then used going forward for every subsequent screen.
Therefore if I leave the menu screens as they are by default my timesheet screen won't work because the meta connection has been opened to the HR system and therefore the meta and data connections now don't match - even though the parameter has been set as above the configuration is ignored.
I get the following error message
    Caused by: com.sap.tc.webdynpro.services.exceptions.WDRuntimeException:
Accessing System DE7 is not possible because RFC Metadata was retrieved
using System DH7. Please assure you have configured the RFC Connections
properly. A Server restart may be necessary!
So if I change the menu to use the finance system then the timesheet screen will work but none of the HR screens will work. (same error with the systems reversed)
Is there any way of getting this to behave properly and make sure that the right Jco connection is used.  It is very frustrating because the configuration is correct, I just need to be able to force the applications to use the the Jco destination that has been defined for the iView.

What should I do on an ECC system in order to enable external application access an sap table?
Also what documentation should I give to external application developer in order to access SAP table with it?

    Hi jan,
We access SAP information externally with remote-enabled RFCs.  One of your programmers would need to write the RFC to pull the information from SAP.  And the application at the other end would need to be written to call the RFC and receive the information.  This can be accomplished with a .NET connector (assuming you are connecting via a .NET project).  You will also need to create a username for the .NET project to use to connect, but I would recommend disabling GUI access, so that the person using .NET can only access information accessible through RFCs (which is controlled by the ABAPers).
Let me know if you have any questions.

Is it possible use E-MU 0404 PCIe under Windows Server 2008 or 2012?

For windows Server 2008 and Server 2012 you may need enable Desktop Experience Feature
The Desktop Experience Feature enables a bunch of stuff that is by default present on a desktop OS. Most importantly it includes Themes, Windows Media player and the Aero related features. You will have to enable it form the Server Manager. The "Turn Windows features on or off" / "Add remove windows components" has all been rolled into the Server Manager now.
Server Manager > Features > Desktop Experience
Installing the Desktop Experience feature does not enable them. You have to manually set them up.
After that Windows Server 2008 == Vista x64
    Windows Server 2008 R2 == Windows 7 x64
    Windows Server 2012 == Window 8 x64
So just use the appropriate desktop drivers - that are available

  • Best Systems for Backup?

Hello. I presently have an eMac and will go to an iMac early in the New Year. I am considering a 500gb Firewire Lacie that would work for backing up this eMac which has Firewire and then transition to the iMac. A question arises however with an External HD (EHD) backup. If, for example I put my over 10,000 photos (iPhoto) on the EHD and IT fails, then I will have lost all the photos on it. Does it make sense to have a 'backup to the backup' which seems to be carrying things too far?
I would appreciate comments on this. Thanks.

    I use a three-tiered back-up strategy.
I use Time Machine to back up to an external HD to keep a current backup of my startup drive.
I use a second internal hard drive to store archival copies of files, including downloaded software installers and various manuals and user guides, which are only occasionally accessed for reference.
Archived documents which need to be retained permanently are burned to CD or DVD.
As preventative maintenance I invest about an hour a week to reboot from alternate startup drive and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and Disk Warrior. And since my G5 is awake 24/7 the system's regular maintenance tasks are performed automatically, but I run system maintenance tasks on my MacBook at least monthly because it's not always awake so automatic tasks aren't executed automatically.

I have been trying to obtain original gray install/restore discs for a 1.42 eMac. Definitely no copies. Can anyone help. Tried every ebay supplier.

You could try Apple software sales at 1 800 MY APPLE and see if they still have original system discs for the eMac in question.
You would need to give them the model and serial No. of your eMac.
This is located behind the panel that opens the CD/DVD drive tray or on the drive's front panel when the drive door is open.
Be advised that if they have these discs , it will be a set that would have come, originally, with the eMac model.
The OS will not be up to date. I believe your model eMac came, originally, with OS X 10.4 or OS X 10.4.2 Tiger.
OS X10.4 Tiger is seven years old as of this year!
You could just spend the $129 dollars to buy OS X 10.5 Leopard retail discs.
Call the same number and ask of they have anymore OS X 10.5 discs still available.
There are no new iDevices that will sync and backup using 10.4 Tige any longer.
So, getting 10.5 maybe a better alternative for you.
Your eMac is fast enough to handle 10.5 Leopard with no, appreciable, issues.
    Good Luck!

  • X201s started reaching high temperatures (122-149 Fahrenheit) when using minimal system resources

Hello, recently my two month old X201s started to get rather hot (50-65 Celsius) (122-149 Fahrenheit) when I am using minimal system resources and putting little of the CPU to use. So I purchased a cooling pad, which only occasionally works to keep the temperature down.
I could understand this happening if I were running something resource intensive such as a game as I am quite sure this should not be happening whilst running a word processor.
and before you suggest looking for blockages to the vents and exhaust I already have and they are all unobstructed.
the temperatures were checked using the program speed fan
I would appreciate some insight into this matter
    Thank you

    Hello hmmm-,
please check if your cpu is running at full speed all the time.
You can use a free version of the program Everest to measure your CPU frequency.
Also check your power plan of the powermanager set it to balanced or set the switch in the middle.
    kind regards.
    Andreas
P.S. If this doesn´t help, act like lead_org already has suggested.

  • ALE logical systems for business service or process

    Hi,
I am trying to send an IDOC into my R/3 system. It is the same IDOC type that I have sucessfully sent out to parties. All the config is in place for communicating with the system, because I have sent others IDOCs in the past. However, they always were sent from another R/3 business system. They processed sucessfully.
I am now trying to sending IDOC's from a BPM,as well as, from a business service. They are under the "With Party" section of the directory. These obviously do not have logical systems, so when I try to send the IDOC I get
"Unable to convert the sender service Purchase_Orders to an ALE logical system", where purchase_Orders being the name of the business serice.
How can I handle this problem?
Should I hard code values somewhere?
    Which ones?
I have read the other posts for the error above, but my situation seems to be different.
    Help!
    Chris

    Hi,
To solve your problem, here my solution:
1/ In your Business Process of your ID (configurator), go to menu "Service > Adapter-specific identifier" and in the part "IDoc Adapter", write your Logical System.
2/ Create this Logical System on your target system (R/3).
WARNING: XI allows you to used a Logical System for only one service (Business Process). Thus, if you are several interfaces, you must used different Logical Systems.
