Minimize Window capability disabled

Lately I've been seeing the yellow "bead" in the upper lefthand corner of a window turn gray, at which point all "minimize window" functionality stops (i.e. clicking the yellow bead, typing Command+M, selecting Window>Minimize, or double-clicking the title bar).
I can now replicate this loss of functionality by
(a) opening a new window (the particular application doesn't seem to matter. Minimize is active.
(b) switching to Parallels which is running Windows XP in full-screen mode in a different Space.
(c) switching back to the original Space, at which point the Minimize function is inactive.
This just began happening after I installed Parallels 4.0.
Has anyone else seen this behavior? Is it related to Parallels, or Spaces?
Thanks,
Chap

I'm confused. The yellow button is the one you click to send the window to the Dock, not minimize the window, the green button does that.

Actually, "minimize" does mean "send window to Dock". If you look under the Window menu you'll see an item called "Minimize", which sends the window to the Dock.
The green button is the "do anything except what I expected it would do" button

  • Can't minimize windows in Finder...

Any help would be appreciated! Help: For some reason, I cannot minimize any of my windows in Finder... The minimize button is disabled on any window or application... Is it the dock that is not allowing minimization? Thanks.

Navigate to ~(yourHome)/Library/Preferences and trash these two files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then log out and back in again. Or restart.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

  • Sometimes Can't minimize windows

I've searched the forums and didn't find anything about this, so forgive me if there are and I missed them. Lately the minimize buttons in Safari and in Finder windows are grayed out. I can't minimize anything. I can quit Safari and restart it and its fine, but then seemingly randomly grays out again. Command-M doesn't work, either does going to Window-Minimize. I can re-launch Finder or restart my computer and that fixes the finder window problems. I really have no clue what the problem is, I have the up to date upgrades from Apple. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Same here, I guess I encounter that since 10.4.5 or even earlier. After a random amount of time, the Finder Minimize Buttons get disabled; I can then relaunch the Finder and everything is fine again. Don't know about Safari since I use Camino as a browser.

  • Can't Close/Minimize Windows

Frequently (but not always) I can't close or minimize windows. If I drag the window slightly (in any direction), suddenly the close/minimize buttons become responsive. The problem happens in all Apps. Any thoughts on what this could be? (Running Mavericks 10.9.3 on a MacBook Air 13'')

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Can't see list of minimized windows when I minimize windows into application

I love the Mac option to minimize windows into application icon, but recently it's behaving abnormally for me. When I minimize, for example, three Word documents into the application icon, I don't see the list of those documents when I click on the icon (they usually stack vertically in the menu, above "Options"). To see those documents, I have to click the application icon and select "show all windows".
I can't figure out what's going on, and it's driving me nuts.
What I'm seeing (I have three documents minimized into the Word application here):
What I should be seeing (This is just a screen grab from a tutorial, not my machine):
Here are my current dock preferences/settings:
I've already rebooted. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!

You need to look in your user Library/Preferences for the .plist. Hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist.  Move the .plist to the trash..
    In Applications/Utilities/Terminal type
    killall Dock
Restart and test. You may have to update your dock to the way you want it.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/04/show-library-directory-in-mac-os-x-lion/
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • Pop up window resize disabled not working in fire fox (Linux)

Hi all I am using Dreamweaver 8, with behavior I made a pop
up window and disabled window resizing. It worked nicely in my
windows XP system (I checked it in IE and Fire fox). But it is not
working in Linux machine having same version of Fire fox
browser(but worked correctly in IE on the same machine). In Linux
machine we can simply resize the window.
Does anybody give a solution to fix this problem?

Post a link to the page, please.
Why disable window resizing? What about those whose screen
    won't display
    the size you have picked?

  • Error during the installation of Windows 8 Apps while having Windows Firewall disabled

    Hello,
    I have a question:
I have Windows Firewall disabled in W8  and when  I try to install  APPs from the Windows Appstore  I obtain an error message saying something like:
"The app couldn´t be installed because Windows Firewall service is not running. Enable Windows Firewall service and try again"
I have the Firewall of Windows disabled because I already have another program for this purpose (monitoring/tracking my internet connections). So, that´s why I want to keep it disabled.
Does anybody know if this problem is going to be fixed and in the next future we will be able to install W8 Apps with the Firewall of Windows disabled?
Thanks in advance for the info.
    Regards.

    Hi,
thanks to the steps of the webpage you have posted I´ve seen the code of the error in the log of my computer:
error 0x80073D0A: when trying to install the package XXXXXXXX, the system couldn´t register the extension windows.repositoryExtension owing to the next error: The package couldn´t be installed because the service "Firewall of Windows" is
not running. Enable the service "Firewall of Windows" and try again.
It matches with one of the codes of your link.
I think this question should be fixed. I (and I suppose much more people) already have a Firewall different than Microsofts´one and I want to have access to the Windows Store running only my "third-part firewall". Having two Firewalls running is a waste
    of resources.
    Regards.

  • I have a blackout covering the red X and minimize window in upper right corner. How do I get rid of it?

Windows performed an update yesterday and now I have a shield in the corner of my Foxfire icon and I have a blackout over the red X and minimize window in the upper right corner when I sign on to Foxfire. How do I get rid of it?

The large "X" means that the image is still marked as hidden, but as you see the hidden photos, you now have turned on "hidden Photos" in the "View" menu of the main menu bar.
To remove the "Hidden" mark, select the image in the event and use the command "Photos > Unhide Photo ⌘L"

  • Can't minimize windows

    After things game:
http://www.macgamefiles.com/detail.php?item=18411 I can not minimize windows anymore. In some apps the minimize button is dimmed and in some it isn't, but not even the windows with a minimize button can be minimized.
I've had this problem before with OS X 10.4, but thought the problem was gone.

I read in another thread that you can solve this problem by trashing the Finder preferences.
    1) Go to ~/Library/Preferences.
    2) Drag the file named com.apple.finder.plist to your Trash.
    3) Empty the Trash.
    4) Restart your Mac.
    5) You should be able to minimize windows again.

  • Windows Defender Disabled\Corrupted on Windows 7 Machine, How do I fix?

    Hello Everyone,
I have a computer that has has had Windows Defender disabled/removed/corrupted in some unknown fashion. I searched for the program link from the start menu, which brings up a listing, but the icon for it is not normal. I also checked the Services Console
and there is not a listing there.
I have seen in other forums a suggestion of a repair install, and would like to know if anyone has tried that and had it work for them before I go through the time and effort.
I use Kaspersky security software, and my other computers have the Windows Defender service working at the same time, so it is not a security program disabling it.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi ChicagoITguy,
Considering the Windows Defender is not in the Services Console , it may be caused by the files corruption or the missing registry.
1.Run sfc /scannow to have system integrity diagnostic.
2.Check the Windows Defender registry`s existence.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinDefend
3.You may need to restore the Windows Defender registry following the Sabrina`s post of the link:

  • Randomly lose the ability to minimize windows (possibly after 5.5 update)

Just like the title says I randomly lose the ability to minimize windows.
I just noticed it a few days ago; and I think it started after I updated to 10.5.5... It seems to happen when I use the spaces feature. Since I'm always use Windows XP in vmware, I give Windows it's own desktop. At times I drag, or open up new applications in other spaces. And when I go bettween the spaces using a command arrow, I notice the "yellow" minimize botton turns a grayish white, and I can't click on it. Sometimes I can still do a command M to minimize that Window, other times that feature is "grayed out" as well. The only thing I can do to fix it is to close and reopen the Window(s), affected.
    About my machine:
    Macbook Pro 4,1
    2.4 ghz Intel
    2 gig's of Ram
    Nivida 8600 256meg
200 gig drive (Partitioned a 100 for leopard, and a 100 for Windows XP Pro "NTFS")

    Update:
I found the problem has to do with vmware.
When I run Windows XP Pro in full screen mode in vmware, and I got bettween spaces, that's when I lose the ability to minimize my OSX applications.
If I run Windows XP Pro with in a window in Vmware or in "utility" mode, I don't have that problem...

  • Minimize window problems in photoshop cs5

just installed master collection cs5 on my macbook pro - 17", 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo, 8Gb RAM, running Snow Leopard.
couple of problems - i can't minimize photoshop windows by double clicking on the window title bar - i can in every other program including all cs5 apps. also, when i first use a tool (brush, marquee, stamp etc), it doesn't register that i have used it until i try a second time
anyone else having similar problems? if so, did you solve it?

Um, I'd like to reboot this thread to say that Adobe didn't really fix the issue, they seem to have applied brute force. I have "double-click title bar to minimize" turned OFF in my System Preferences. It seems that Adobe's "fix" was to make "doubleclick to minimize" an uncancellable "feature" that overrides the System Preferences.
I have a Wacom and I am constantly, inadvertantly "double-clicking" the title bar.
Don't tell me to fiddle with my Wacom settings, I already have "double click distance" set to maximum. Don't go blaming Wacom for the brute force fix you've created. I do not want this "feature" at all.
Since I am pretty this won't merit an incremental update to fix this, could an Adobe employee at least verify that what I say is true, that Adobe chose to override System Preferences for "double-click title bar to minimize  window" and did not offer a radio checkbox in preferences?
Could Adobe please consider adding this to the preference pane if they don't plan on coding it to be consistent with System Preferences?

  • Keyboad short cut to maximize and minimize windows

    Hi All
We are running forms 10g R2 as a separate frame. How do we set up shortcut keys to maximize and minimize windows. To simulate the effect of pressing the square icon on the top right corner. This is key to our user's productivity. Any immediate help is greatly appreciated.

When I want to get at the desktop with lots of windows open I use expose. The F11 key, or the 4 finger swipe upward will do it (assuming this is enabled via System Preferences).

  • Maximize window and disable icons

Hey everyone I have another question. I have program that creates a window using JFrame. How do you make it so that it is maximized when you run the program and stays maximized?
Also how do you disable the maximize, minimize and close buttons on the top right hand corner of the window?
    Someone suggested:
    setExtendedState(...);
    setResizabale(...);
How do I use these? What goes into the brackets?

    Read these:
