Minimizing & closing multiple grouped windows from taskbar
On Windows Server 2012 R2, I have set my taskbar to combine buttons. I have multiple instances of a console application running, and they combine on the taskbar fine. However, when I right-click on the combined button, I only get a list of window names,
each with a "close" button. I no longer have the option to "cascade", "minimize group" or "close group" like on my previous version of Server. So I tried opening a bunch of browser windows also, and I can right-click
on that combined button and at least get "close all windows", but still no "cascade" or "minimize". So for now, my workaround to minimize is to just show desktop. But I could really use a shortcut to "close all" since
I have 14 of these windows that I close pretty often. What is it about my console application that would have Windows Server 2012 omit that "close all" option, when I DID have that option with the same application on the older version of Windows
Server?
In addition, I saw a tip somewhere else to simply CTRL-select the processes in Task Manager and close them all that way, but I can't even do that. I can't select multiple items in the Processes or Details tabs of Task Manager with either the CTRL or SHIFT buttons.
I wasn't able to do that on my older server either, so strange that that's an option for some people.
Hi LysR777,
Do you mean the "cascade all windows", "Minimize Windows" option cannot be found?
If so, Please try to Hold the SHIFT key and then right click on the Stack of combined taskbar items, the screenshort below on server 2012 R2 is for your reference:
If there is anything else regarding this issue, please feel free to post back.
Best Regards,
Anna Wang

Want to stop multiple spam windows from opening when I click on a link
All of a sudden when I click on a link all sorts of spam windows open up. I have "Pop-Up" windows set to off....but they still open...also all of a sudden pages on line will have tons of words highlighted as hough they are links.... and when I click on them thinking it is a link it is another annoying pop up window. I have checked my "plug ins" and "add ons" and there is nothing there that I can find. I am using Windows 7 and this problem just began this week. I ran a McAfee scan and found no virus......can you help???
Really? It's not there? Huh, that's odd...
Your System Details show that there is one. Is this the same Firefox installation that's having problems or did you post it from another computer with Firefox installed?

You should always pay attention when installing software because often, a software installer includes optional installs, such as this adware. Be very careful what you agree to install.<br>
Adware gets on your computer after you have installed a freeware software (video recording/streaming, download-managers or PDF creators) that had bundled into their installation this browser hijacker.
You can use the below steps to revert back to adware-less Firefox.
1) <u>Reset Prefs</u>
*Navigate to '''about:config''' in your Address Bar
*Press the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button to proceed
*Search for <b>trovi</b> and reset all prefs that pull up by right clicking > Reset
*Also search for <b>conduit</b> and reset all prefs to be sure it's gone.
2) Remove any programs that you don't recognize or remember installing from your Control Panel (Start > Control Panel > Uninstall a Program)
3) Remove any extensions that you don't recognize or remember installing from Firefox.
*<b>Firefox 29 and above:</b>(Press the menu button ([[Image:new fx menu]] > Add-ons > Extensions)

How to link the updation of host file on multiple group computers from a single computer
I have a question, I have 4-5 PC's running windows 7 and we usually have stuffs to add to the host file
(almost on daily basis) which leads to difference in host entries in all the pc's. Is there anyway in which I can update a single host file and all the remaining host file on the same group computers gets updated???
Please let me know this as soon as possible.
Mail : [email protected]Hello Shailz S,
Do you mean that you want to sync the file to the several computers?
If yes, please refer to the following article to use offline folder.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-hk/windows/working-with-network-files-offline#1TC=windows-7
Additionally, you could try to map network driver.

Closing a browser window from servlet
Hi
I generate a pdf document using itext and open it in a web browser which has a button save and close, on the click of this button, a servlet is been called. Now my question is, after the execution of the servlet, I need to close the browser where the pdf was shown. How do I achieve this.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
ThanksOn the server response, write something like
<html>
<head></head>
<body>
<script>window.close();</script>
</body>
</html>There's no way that I know of to close the browser inside the servlet as the servlet is not executed on the browser, but in the server ;-) So you may have to play with Javascript to do that. -

Using Firefox 25.0.1 on Windows 7 Home Premium
I've poured through support forums for Mozilla Firefox searching for a fix to my initial problem of the "Warn when closing multiple tabs" pop up not popping up when I have it selected.
Went through About:Config, making sure warnings for tabs und closing, und showing on quit, und quitting, etc. were all set to true, which were "possible" fixes for the issue I was having, there are like five or six things set to true for warnings/quitting/etc. No avail. They are all set to true.
Then I stumbled across one that suggested a conflict with the "Warn When Closing Multiple Tabs" und the "Show Windows und Tabs from last time".
I use both features. However, I found if I want the warning pop up for closing multiple tabs, I have to have "show homepage" or "show blank page" selected instead of "Show windows und tabs from last time" selected. (Tools>Options>General>Start Up>When Firefox Starts:) The problem with this is, yes, I get my warning pop up, BUT, I don't get my tabs from my last session.
The warning in settings (Tools>Options>Tabs>Warn Me When Closing Multiple Tabs) is checked.
To have my tabs restored from last session, I simply select it for "when firefox starts". Bam, I have my tabs that were open from the last time I quit. Und again, full circle, I don't have my warning pop up.
There were also suggestions of the warning on close for tabs is conflicting with add-ons.
However, I don't have many. Und I have yet to test them to see if they interfere. These are according to my Add Ons tab when I check it myself.
Extensions:
1. Avast WebRep (disabled)
2. HP Smart Web Printing (disabled)
Plugins:
1. Adobe Acrobat
2. Google Update
3. iTunes Application Detector
4. Java (TM) Platform SE 7 U45
5. Shockwave Flash
6. Shockwave For Director
7. Silverlight Plug-In
8. VLC Web Plugin
9. Windows Live Photo Gallery
10. Java Deployment Toolkit (disabled)
Note: The Details Firefox provides says I have these for Plugins
* Shockwave Flash 11.9 r900
* Adobe Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 12.0.5.146
* Next Generation Java Plug-in 10.45.2 for Mozilla browsers
* Google Update
* Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape 11.0.05
* VLC media player Web Plugin 2.1.0
* 5.1.20913.0
* iTunes Detector Plug-in
* NPWLPG
Unsure of what the "5.1.20913.0" und the "NPWLPG" plugins are, but they don't appear to me under Add Ons.
Und as usual, I'm assuming the solution lies within About:Config, I will show here now what I have set to True.
browser.tabs.warnOnClose - True
browser.tabs.warnOnCloseOtherTabs - True
browser.tabs.warnOnOpen - True
browser.warnOnQuit - True
browser.showQuitWarning - True
As aforementioned:
The seemingly only issue is the conflict between Show Windows/Tabs From Last Time und the Warn On Quit pop up. Und again, I need/want both of them. More so the tabs from the last session, but I really really really really really want the warning.
So, if anyone knows a work around, preferably without having to download anything to fix this, I would be extremely grateful.You mention a second subject.
''I'm probably going to downgrade to another version of firefox that was suggested to me since I'm also having issues with shockwave flash causing firefox to hang und ultimately needs to be force closed otherwise having to have flash disabled to use firefox.''
<u>Downgrading Firefox </u><br />
Flash is notorious for causing Firefox problems. I suggest you start a new thread about that. If at all possible you should try to avoid downgrading to an unsecure & unsupported version of Firefox. it will increase risks to your system and Personal data. (There are methods of mitigating the risks, using a virtual machine or operating within a secure intranet for instance)
*(Do Not) [[Install an older version of Firefox]]
<u>Try Flash with Protected Mode Off</u><br/>
Worth a try as it takes minimal effort & often solves Flash Problems whilst allowing current and more secure FlashPlayer to be used. See
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash#Flash_Player_11.3_Protected_Mode_-_Windows
* http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1018071#TemporaryWorkaround
If you wish to pursue these subjects further I note you have already started a thread you may as well continue the discussion in that thread, but also post back here so we can follow both.

<u>Your experience in submitting troubleshooting information on the forum</u><br />
(This is out of curiosity, but with the intention of pressing for changes if forum faults are discovered.)
There are yet more changes to this forum underway. Mozilla recently tried to improve the experience for first time users of the forum and a troubleshooting app option was included in the workflow to try to encourage users to submit full troubleshooting information.
I would be interested to know what you thought
I sometimes wonder if users are not trying to use that, or whether forum users run into problems in using it. At one point I wondered whether there was a problem if too much data was included but never actually proved that conjecture.
Assuming you are using the forum, and not merely replying by email look towards the top in the right hand margin for clickable buttons

You will note that includes only partial information. There are no changed prefs or extensions listed. Compare for instance the information in this thread [/questions/978130] with full information.

* NPWLPG relates usually to Windows Live Photo Gallery
* 5.1.20913.0 will be Silverlight -
How do I set Safari to prompt before closing multiple tabs OR reopen all of the closed tabs when when I relaunch the application? The "Reopen all windows from last session" is unselectable.
It would seem if your choose "Show my windows and tabs from last time" '''''and''''',
*when you last closed Firefox, you had no web site open (just a blank tab), that it would open just that blank tab
*when you last closed Firefox, you had one or more tabs/web site open, that would allow you to "Restore Previous Session"
#Have you tried that?
#If so, what is happening in each circumstance when you reopen Firefox?
'''Restore Previous Session'''<br />
Open tabs are automatically saved when closing Firefox beginning in Firefox 4. To open your last session, after Firefox starts, click History > Restore Previous Session. For this to work

I'm using Firefox 6.
I have the same issue and didn't even close my browser. I closed a tab group, and they're ''gone''. I've always used ''warn me when closing multiple tabs''; why didn't it prevent this?
I dutifully updated to 6.0.1 (Win7 Pro 64bit SP1) today, and saw "''Tabs, meet groups''." I played briefly with a group and then clicked (x).
While exploring the UI, I had assumed I was manipulating a filter rather than the actual tabs. No reason to suspect this would close an entire window's worth. The "restore tab group" button suggested I'd merely ungrouped the tabs. No biggie; new feature playtime is over for now. The background blur was still present, so again no worry that my six or eight tabs were about to be annihilated.
The recently closed window list includes three pages from yesterday. Naturally the recently closed tabs ''from the other window'' aren't here.
My full history is sorted by visit date; why isn't each tab added to today's list after a restart? Now I'll search the entire history to ensure I'm not forgetting one. Tab groups are likely quite nifty, but for now I'm irritated with 'em.
'''Why didn't "''warn me when closing multiple tabs''" kick in''' to alert me?!
SUGGESTION:
'''''Warning:''' The 'tabs group' feature does not care if you've checked "warn me on closing multiple tabs." If you click the (x), you're hosed.'' -
KDE shuts down when I click on a minimized window in taskbar!
Hello
I'm having this strange problem since I use KDE 4.5.2; if Kwin desktop effects would be enabled (OpenGL), KDE shuts down immediately when I click on a minimized window in taskbar no matter what I do.
First I had this problem in Kubuntu 10.10 and then in Arch (after upgrading KDE), the difference is, in Arch I get this error on screen that probably helps solve the problem or at least find out its origination!
Here is the screenshot:
Some information that may help:
Xorg version: 1.9
VGA: ATI Radeon HD 5870
VGA Driver: catalyst-test 10.10-999 from AUR
Thanks in advance for your help...

I just upgraded Arch (# powerpill -Syu) and along by that KDE also got updated to 4.5.2-2 from 4.5.2-1, but nothing changed, probably got worse; Plasma workspace crashes, screen flickers and background goes black frequently for about 2 minutes after I log in, even if Kwin effects are disabled or enabled via XRenderer.
I said I had the same problem in Kubuntu Maverick where I let Kubuntu download and install ATI proprietary drivers. Are they considered beta also?
Anyways, here is another screenshot after KDE gets killed!:

I think it's more related to Xorg 1.9 or KDE 4.5.2 than the driver (based on my experience with Kubuntu).
This problem forces me to use Gnome for the moment and I'm really upset! -
I have my tabs seperated into several groups (for example, bank tabs, music tabs, social life tabs and so on). I do this with the help of the button in the top left corner. While I was surfing the internet, I accidentaly opened a site not in a new tab (as I usually do), but in a new window. The new window was without all the grouped tabs, which I had in the previous Firefox window. And then I accidentaly closed the Firefox window with all my grouped tabs. Now I can't recover it. Are there any solutions?
Hi,
We have rolled out a fix for this issue.
Please log off and log back in to your machine and the issue should be resolved automatically. In case that does not work, please manually run the msi installer posted here (may require reboot).
For details, please refer to the KB article here: Multiple RunOnce keys created 11.0.10 and 10.1.13 Acrobat | Reader
Please let us know if you still face any issues.
Thanks,

I attempted to open a new window from the Firefox icon but nothing happens. I then went on browsing and closed Firefox but was later unable to open it. I checked processes and it was already running but there was no window displayed. I am running Windows 7 Professional.
This is repeated any time I already have the browser open and wish to open a second instance.'''<u>Open a second window (not a second tab, that is different) when Firefox is already running and displayed on the monitor</u>'''

Why does closing all open windows (15) and leaving only one drop ram usage by only 100mb from 1.5 to 1.4Gb.
What is in this 1.4 gb ?
I don't care much about ram, It's just that cpu usage spike like crazy by the end.
''Edited to remove swearing - TonyE''Hi musicfan,<br />Sorry you are having problems with Firefox. Maybe you should have asked earlier and we could have fixed it.
Reading your comments I do not see that rolling back to an insecure Firefox 22 will actually help you much. You are probably best using IE, unless you have also damaged that.
*[[Export bookmarks to Internet Explorer]]
You should not use old versions they are insecure. Security fixes are publicised and exploitable.
* [[Install an older version of Firefox]]
* https://www.mozilla.org/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox.html
Most others will not be having such problems. We are now able to say that with confidence because after developers missed a regression in Firefox 4 telemetry was introduced so that data was obtained. It may be an idea to turn on your telemetry, if you have not already done so, and decide to stick with Firefox.

Trying safe mode takes seconds. Unfortunatly if you are not willing to do even rudimentary troubleshooting there is not anything we can do to help you.

Windows 8 and IE10 and 11 not accepting Proxy Settings via Group Policy from windows server 2003
Hi
We are still running Windows Server 2003 with a Win7 and Win8 desktop environment. I can control Win7 IE9 settings,
But Win8 systems are running IE10. We have an internal proxy server.

i have tried with The IE 10 .adm template and applied gpo,but does not have any proxy settings for ie10 and no changes were applies
please can anyone help me regarding this
i want to apply GPO from windows server 2003 to windows 8 ie10/11
Thanks
KNCHi,
I agree with Zanderol24, we can install RSAT on a windows8 client, and then we can use Group Policy Management to manage group policy from the client.
For more information about RSAT, we can refer to the following link:
Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) for Windows Client and Windows Server (dsforum2wiki)
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/2202.remote-server-administration-tools-rsat-for-windows-client-and-windows-server-dsforum2wiki.aspx
For more detailed information about how to use GPP to configure the proxy setting for ie10 and ie11, we can refer to the following link:
How to configure Group Policy Preference settings for Internet Explorer 11 in Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2898604
When we use GPPs you need to be aware of the F5-F8 keys:
Red / Green: GP Preferences doesn’t work even though the policy applied and after gpupdate \force
http://blogs.technet.com/b/grouppolicy/archive/2008/10/13/red-green-gp-preferences-doesn-t-work-even-though-the-policy-applied-and-after-gpupdate-force.aspx
Besides, aside from using group policy to manage IE, IEAK can also be used to do this.
For IEAK, the following article can be referred to for more information.

Problem in Closing Browser window from an Applet.
I have wriiten a small Applet progarm that calls a Javascript function in the opening window, to close the window in which it is loaded.The Applet window is a PopUp window from one of my application's window.
First time I start my application and load that Applet and then close the frame window,it works fine that the browser window will close, when the frame window is closed.It calls the window closing event in that applet stop method is called and In stop methd a closeLaunchedBrowser method will called this has a Javascript method and the Method closes the window using the self.close() method.
But now if I continue this process of launching applet and then closing frame window, initial 1 or 2 steps it has know problem when I continue this, after 3 or 4 steps, it result in browser hang/crash.
I am using java version 1.4.2_01 or higher and IE or Firefox(any other NetScape based) browser to load applet.It works fine with IE but getting problem in case of Firefox(any other NetScape based).
The error dialog information and related event log generated is shown below :
The dialog which is displayed before crashing of firefox has information :
"firefox.exe has generated errors and it will closed by windows.you will need to restart the program.
An error log is being created."
The error log information :
Source : Browser Event ID: 8032
"The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{611A64A2-8F4B-409E-9AB2-0D9BF741E791}. The backup browser is stopping.
The code related to this is given below.
import javax.swing.JApplet;
import java.awt.*;
import javax.swing.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
import netscape.javascript.JSObject;
public class TestApplet extends JApplet {
protected JSObject win = null;
private JFrame frame = null;
private boolean alreadyClosed = false;
public void init(){
this.win = JSObject.getWindow(this);
frame = new JFrame("Test Frame");
frame.setSize(300, 400);
frame.addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter() {
public void windowClosing(WindowEvent e) {
System.out.println("windowClosing");
TestApplet.this.stop();
frame.show();
public void stop() {
if (!alreadyClosed) {
alreadyClosed = true;
closeLaunchedBrowser();
System.gc();
System.runFinalization();
private void closeLaunchedBrowser() {
final TestApplet thisObject = this;
Runnable r = new Runnable() {
public void run() {
try {
JSObject win = (JSObject)JSObject.getWindow(thisObject);
if (win != null && win.toString() != null) {
//win.eval("top.opener=self;self.close();");
//win.call("close", null);
win.eval("self.close();");
} catch (Exception e) {
Thread t = new Thread(r);
t.start();
}If any one know solution regarding how to aviod this crash of browser please let me know. I will be very thankful to you.
Thanks.Right, I sort of tracked down some code that uses getMethods to allow me to invoke a Javascript command. It is not pretty and took a little bit of editing to get to work but it does the job without putting JS stuff into my HTML.
However it is causing some problems. If I open one of my other applets it will only let me close that window and the previous applets ceases to respond at all. I think this may be because the invoke gets the JSObject which is the window and somehow having more than one applet open in different windows is causing it to get confused and is locking the first window and only responding to the second.
I have seen a much simpler method that uses:
import netscape.javascript.*;
and JSObject to get the window but my compiler complains about the import. Any further suggestions or an example would be welcome as my current solution is a bit limited as you can effectively only have one window open at a time which doesn't suit my needs.
Many thanks.

Window does not open from taskbar
It is not uncommon for me to have up to six windows with ten tabs each when I have Firefox running. The problem that I am having is sometimes I cannot open one of those windows from the task bar. Restarting Firefox does not help, I tried the cascade option but the window failed to show up in the cascade. The tabs from the window show up in the history how do I fix this?
You might be better off using the Tab Groups utility in a single window rather than opening separate windows because you don't want to display more than 10 tabs on each. See [[What are Tab Groups?]]
Alternatively, install this add-on which allows you to reduce the width of each tab: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/custom-tab-width/
You could install this one as well to help you identify them easier: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/colorfultabs/
What you're doing at the moment though is taxing system resources. Every time you open a new window it opens a new process. The number of plugins you have installed also have to be reloaded again in each new window. I think that's where the problem lies.
