Minimizing Solaris packages and size when running Sunray

Hello All,
Does anybody have knowledge concerning the smallest Solaris install that will support Sunray Server software? The default install is way too large as I am testing different customer setups under vmware (this makes it easy when you are limited in the amount of HW you have to test with) and would like to conserve my disk space. It would also benefit the customer in the long run as they get a smaller (and possibly faster with less daemons) install when finally implemented directly.
I would like to start with a disk install and the "END USER" config (if possible) and subtract packages from there. Then after testing move on to a jumpstart with package delete keywords. If someone has done this exercise before your insight would be appreciated.
Regards,
Tucker

It turned out to be my switch. I tried setting the speed and media type manually, using ndd, spanning 100/full down to 20/half, nothing worked. The instant I connected the Solaris box directly to the upstream link the problem went away. I also seem to have problems with a Linksys VPN router attached to this switch. So I guess I need a new switch, perhaps a managed switch is more in order.

  • What Solaris packages are needed to run WebLogic 5.1?

Solaris by default comes with 4 installation methods, namely core, end-user,
developer, full. In comparison, full consists of 300+ solaris packages and
core about 30+. I was wondering if there are any docs lying around on
specifcally what packages are required of Solaris 2.6 by Weblogic 5.1. Would
greatly appreciate any help here. Thx
    Rgrds,
    Wong.

Acckk a full installation is bad... real bad for security in a production
env. You guys should investigate thoroughly exactly what packages are needed
to run JVM. There are a lot of useless binaries/libs in a full Solaris
installation. For the record, I installed a core installation + two packages
(required by JDK). The thing works anyhow... but I thought BEA would have
some guidelines on a Solaris installation for host security. I mean, even
M$ have guidelines on running IIS securely, and apache have theirs long ago.
Any of you guys ever tried stripping Solaris to run weblogic??
    Rgrds,
    Wong.

We certify with full installations, but others may work as well. The
ability to run the JVM is the biggest factor.

  • "Use Toolkit Package" and "Gather" - When do you have to run them?

    Greetings,
I have inherited a huge task sequence (MDT 2012 integrated with SCCM 2012) that calls "Use Toolkit Package" and "Gather" many many times even though there are only a few reboots.
Is it true that the "Use Toolkit package" step (followed immediately by Gather) only need to be run right at the beginning of the TS and only after every reboot?
Is it also true that the "Gather" step on it's own only needs to be run when you have run another step which may alter/create a variable which is used in the rules? (i.e. customsettings.ini).
    Thanks
    David Z

    Thanks.
My question was when exactly do you need to run the steps. I suspect that many people have task sequences with loads of "use toolkit package" and "gather" in places when they are NOT needed.
First let's look at the step "Use Toolkit Package". There is no reference to that task sequence step in the MDT documentation. Im aware that this simply copies the "deployment share" so all the scripts etc that are necessary for future task sequence steps
are available (In MDT only environments this was not necessary as the UNC path to the deployment share was always available - so this is an SCCM only step). Your reference states that it copies it to the local hard drive. This is not entirely true. I understand
that when Winpe is loaded, it is loaded into a ramdrive and therefore my "Use Toolkit package" step which is the first in the task sequence is loaded somewhere into the "RAM" drive (probably under "X" drive somewhere?).
So my assumption is that "Use toolkit package" must be run as the first task sequence step, then any time immediately after the winpe system is restarted. If, during winpe and before the OS is loaded onto the hard drive, you format the hard drive (which
is often the case), you do not need to run "Use Toolkit.." as it still exists in the RAM drive. When you apply the OS and restart, and then run "Use toolkit.." again, it must magically work out that it is to then load to the hard drive and not the RAM drive.
However, once the "deployment share" has been loaded to hard drive, Im assuming that you never need to run the "Use toolkit.." again even if the system restarts as once it is loaded to the hard drive, it remains there (assuming you dont format disks again
which is unlikely after the OS has loaded).
The answer to "when must you run Gather" is alot trickier. The first assumption is that Gather has to be run immediately after "Use toolkit..." as the system has initialised or restarted and none of the variables created by "gather" exist.
Im guessing that "gather" may need to be run when you suspect that something in the rules file has changed. For example, you may have run a task sequence step that sets variable "A" for the first time. Your rules file may generate another variable, "B",
based on variable "A" so "gather" must be run to evaluate "B".
However, once the OS has loaded and "gather" has been run, the variables.dat file is created and remains permanently on disk so that if the machine is restarted again, you dont have to run "gather" as all the variables persist in variables.dat.
All of the above is an educated guess as I have searched the web extensively and have not found a definitive explanation. I would be grateful if anything above could be confirmed/denied so this could remain as a definitive guide  that may not help just
    me, but others :-).
    Thanks

  • Making Solaris package and dealing with symlinks

    Hello,
we are developping an application that runs on Solaris 8 and 9, and we distribute it as a number of packages. We have a problem in one package where we have to install some binaries in a subdirectory under /opt. If we put:
    d base /opt 0775 root bin
    d base /opt/subdir 0755 root bin
In the template file used in building the package, then we have a problem on one of our machines, where /opt
is a symlink to /export/home/opt - it seems pkgadd wants /opt to be a regular directory, so it creates it, overwriting the symlink and making everything previously under /opt unavailable (though it's still under /export/home/opt).
If we remove the files, when we install the package on a machine without an /opt directory, the install fails. Is there some way around these two corner cases? Like telling pkgadd that if /opt is a symlink to leave it like that?

I checked out https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Initramfs, and I'm not sure what to do. I rebooted a few times in attempt to get things going. I'm assuming I need to start by logging in to the live CD as root and mounting the sda in which Arch is installed? I don't know how to mount root nor know the complete title for the Arch partition (sda x,x). Sorry for the hassle.
Edit: Found https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ch … partitions. Be back in a bit.
I currently have the temporary filesystems mounted, chrooted, and am in bash.
    # mkinitcpio -p linux
    doesn't work. I tried
    mkinitcpio -g ..... 3.6.10-1-ARCH
and I received something about 3.6.10 and a module directory.

  • How to filter the file type and size when uploadind files into APEX

    Hi,
I was wondering how I can do to validate the size of a file, before moving it to my table ? I'd like to filter the file type, but for this one, I think I can use regular expressions in a validation process.
I don't know if there is a way to read the file size even before sending it into the temporary file table.
    Thank you
    Leinad

    Hello Leinad,
AFAIK, you have to create an APEX validation (PL/SQL returns Boolean or Returns error text), which will query the file details from apex_flow_files table. Here you can get filetype and size etc.
So just validate and if any validation fails, then delete the file from apex_flow_files and riase error message.
    Regards,
    Hari
P.S. Please note that, if there are other apex validations on your page and if they fail, still apex will load the file into apex_flow_files table. So it's good idea to create a validation (PL/SQL) which will fire (condition) when inline validation errors occured. Make sure that this is the LAST validation on your page in sequence. And here you can write code to delete the file from apex_flow_files table.

  • Can I set JVM memory size when running applets?

    Hi,
I have downloaded an applet that renders panoramic images and
I have a problem with Java memory. I remember that default maximum

    So my question is...
Is it possible add "-Xmx -Xms" parameters inside the applet file

  • Query that becomes slower and slower when runned several times

    Hi everybody,
I have an issue with one querie...
I have a select that is a join between 3 subqueries, 2 of them are using a function with pipeline.
When I run this query it work fine.
    * First run lasts less than 1 sec.
    * Second run lasts less than 1 sec.
    * Third run lasts 2 sec.
    * Fourth run lasts 2 min.
    * Fifth run lasts 10 min.
    * ... and then worse an worse...
Of course, I always use same bind variables and data within the database does not change.
I looked at the execution plan that seems to be the same for all the runs.
The problem is during the Execute phase :
    for the first run :
call count cpu elapsed disk query current rows
    Parse 1 0.00 0.00 0 0 0 0
    Execute 1 0.20 0.20 0 1215 0 0
    Fetch 3 0.12 0.14 0 246 0 19
    total 5 0.33 0.36 0 1461 0 19
Misses in library cache during parse: 1
Misses in library cache during execute: 1
    Optimizer mode: ALL_ROWS
    Parsing user id: 66
    for the fifth run
call count cpu elapsed disk query current rows
    Parse 1 0.01 0.01 0 0 0 0
    Execute 1 95.29 100.96 0 1215 0 0
    Fetch 3 0.27 0.39 0 246 0 19
    total 5 95.57 101.36 0 1461 0 19
Misses in library cache during parse: 1
Misses in library cache during execute: 1
    Optimizer mode: ALL_ROWS
    Parsing user id: 66
I didn't find dynamic sampling during the execution plan.
All subqueries are very stable in time.
When the join query starts to have a strange behavior, subqueries are still very perfomant !
If I flush the shared pool, the problem disappear and the cycle restarts...
    1) any idea of the root cause of the issue ?
    2) is there a solution (with hint for instance) for not recording the query inthe shared pool ?
    Thanks in advance...
    The query is :

    Hi Nikolay
Concerning point 2, the database seems perfectly OK and I encountered an issue only with this query :-(
The database is hosted on a dedicated server and I am the only one user. Moreover the issue is reproducible as I want... Very strange for me...
I am very interested on a method to check waits and more precisely IO waits. Can you describe me a procedure ?
The only one thing I can produce is the tkprof output focused on the fifth run that is very long...

no crash ids since this is version 3.6, the only version that doesn't crash, and I have to use Firefox for work stuff.
I have submitted over a hundred crash reports and included my email, but no one has ever contacted me with any help. This has been going on for weeks. I have been forced to use an outdated version of FF because no one has bother to get back to me. I would be happy to update to 14 and start the crash cycle again if someone wants to give me some suggestions I haven't tried already.
BTW, no font conflicts or RAM problems, (someone else's issue)

Maybe you did't understand my previous statement. There are no crashes in FF 3.6, There is no previous evidence FF 14 was ever here, I completely uninstalled all trace of Firefox, no app data, no preferences, no cache. I will upgrade to FF14 so I can send IDs,
    so here ya go.

Hi. I'm not trying to rush things, you may have a different problem, but your issue looks quite familiar to me. I recently had a problem with the discrete graphics card (the Radeon GPU) due to overheating, all because a faulty application of the thermal compound in the factory.
In my case, the problem started slowly and intermittently, a few days after a gaming session (Quake 3) of about three hours (at the moment, I didn't realized that could be linked to the problem).
This issue is being actively discussed in another threads in this forum, but so far there's enough evidence that it's been causing similar problems for 2011 MBPs owners: screen corruption, black/blue screens, and in some cases, a total inability to boot. Some of the threads I'm talking about:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/13150366#13150366
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21110132#21110132
So far, and since the problem seems to affect only the discrete GPU (that's why you can boot in safe mode) a possible solution is to disable it by removing some extensions which prevent OS X from loading the Radeon drivers. This post describing the process (there are different files involved depending of your GPU version, so make sure you are moving the right ones):
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22521574#22521574
In the case your discrete GPU survived and is not permanently damaged, I personally had success by changing the thermal compound myself, which completely fixed the problem (at least for now). I've posted about it here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22630561#22630561
I hope you can find a solution, believe me I know the feeling when you see your expensive machine turning into a brick and it *****.
    Good luck!

  • Create Table using DBMS_SQL package and size not exceeding 64K

I have a size contraint that my SQL size should not exceed 64K.
Now I would appriciate if some one could tell me how to create a table using
Dynamic sql along with usage of DBMS_SQL package.
Brief Scenario: Users at my site are not given permission to create table.
I need to write a procedure which the users could use to create a table .ALso my SQL size should not exceed 64K. Once this Procedure is created using DBMS_SQL package ,user should pass the table name to create a table.
    Thanks/

"If a user doesn't have permission to create a table then how do you expect they will be able to do this"
Well, it depends on what you want to do. I could write a stored proc that creates a table in my schema and give some other user execute privilege on it. They would then be able to create a able in my schema without any explicitly granted create table privilege.
Similarly, assuming I have CREATE ANY TABLE granted directly to me, I could write a stroe proc that would create a table in another users schema. As long as they have quota on their default tablespace, they do not need CREATE TABLE privileges.
    SQL> CREATE USER a IDENTIFIED BY a
      2  DEFAULT TABLESPACE users TEMPORARY TABLESPACE temp;
    User created.
    SQL> GRANT CREATE SESSION TO a;
    Grant succeeded.
    SQL> CREATE TABLE a.t (id NUMBER, descr VARCHAR2(10));
CREATE TABLE a.t (id NUMBER, descr VARCHAR2(10))
    ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01950: no privileges on tablespace 'USERS'So, give them quota on the tablespace and try again
    SQL> ALTER USER a QUOTA UNLIMITED ON users;
    User altered.
    SQL> CREATE TABLE a.t (id NUMBER, descr VARCHAR2(10));
Table created. Now lets see if it really belongs to a:
    SQL> connect a/a
    Connected.
    SQL> SELECT table_name FROM user_tables;
    TABLE_NAME
    T
    SQL> INSERT INTO t VALUES (1, 'One');
1 row created.Yes, it definitely belongs to a. Just to show that ther is nothing up my sleeve:
    SQL> create table t1 (id NUMBER, descr VARCHAR2(10));
create table t1 (id NUMBER, descr VARCHAR2(10))
    ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01031: insufficient privilegesI can almost, but not quite, see a rationale for the second case if you want to enforce some sort of naming or location standards but the whole thing seems odd to me.
Users cannot create tables, so lets give them a procedure to create tables?

  • Strange position and size when QT opens

I'm a Windows user. My Canon Ixus 220 HS digicam has a neat 1920x1080 movie capability. It creates files in MOV format.
But when I play these on my Windows XP PC, QT always opens offset down and right (100,100) and at a size of 1936 x 1205, which is greater than my 1920x1200 screen!
    Here's an example:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4019461/QT-Puzzle-1.jpg
So I can't see the controls until I use View > Half Screen.
This is becoming a real PITA, so I hope one of the experts can suggest a fix please.
In case it helps, here's what MediaInfo reports for a typical MOV file:

It seems this is a long-standing problem that Apple have not not bothered to fix.

  • How can I get size of fetched data size when run a SQL ?

    Hi,
When I run a SQL how can I get fetched data size?
    regards,

We can get it using some calculations:
    1. SQL%ROWCOUNT attribute will fetch you number of rows returned in a SQL statement.
Problem-->Now you need to get the size of 1 row.
    Solution-->
Step 1.We can get size of table from dba_segment data dictionary.
    Select block_size from dba_segemnts where segment name like '%YOURTABLE%';
Step2 . Get count of rows in your table
    Select count(*) from YOUR_TABLE
    Step 3.
Get size of 1 row--> Divide result in Step1 by result in Step 2.
Required result--> multiple result in step3 with SQL%ROWCOUNT..
I hope this is what u want.

  • Impact on physcial machines and network when running Capacity Planner.

I need to find a white paper or an app note that explains how Capacity Planner collects data from physical machines.  I seem to have been pulled into the middle of a squabble between IT staff members that has the manager halting a virtualization project.  I have a virtual server running the Collector for Capacity Planner for 157 machines discovered in the customers network.  The Collector has been working fine, I am getting the inventory data I need to get on all systems except one.  At the request of the customer, I disabled the host name mask so we could see real host names in the report.  I also disabled the WMI checking since it only worked on half of my customers machines.  Using the Registry setting has gotten the inventory on all machines except one.  This one machine (an email server) has very strict administration control that is preventing the Collector service user from connecting.  When my contact and I tried to gain the needed access, our project was halted because the email server admin report an enormous amount of connection attempts from the Collection server that caused an issue with the mail server (was never able to get specifics on the issue).  This caused the manager to error on the side of caution and halt the project since the mail server admin believed the Collector caused his server issues.  My contact and I will be removing the mail server from the virtualization project, but to get the manager to allow the project to continue, I need to put something in her hands that explains how the Collector is getting it's data.  I have tried my self explaining it, but she is insisting on something from VMWare that explains how the collector is getting the data.  I know it is active collection, and as far as I know it just uses the built in WMI or Remote Registry services to request monitoring data that causes no impact to system performance.  I will be searching for an app note or a white paper or a KB article today, I would greatly appreciate if someone already knows of something that can settle this argument for me and help me get this project back on track.
    thank you
