Minimum configuration for osx server?

I am getting a MacBook to add to an all-windows environment and want to use time capsule for backup.  in addition, I'd like to run iTunes on a system so I was thinking about hitting eBay for a used mini that would be used for backup and media streaming. What is the minimum specs from a memory and CPU standpoint should I look for?  Currently I have a windows server and  NAS and have ~20 years of tech experience, but all on the windows, netware and x86 side.

Mac OS X supports up to 10 Users for File Sharing, so if all you need is File Sharing, the complexity of Server is not needed.
If you have another reason for requiring Server, its requirements are similar to Mac OS X of a similar version. Server is an I/O problem, so fast drives are needed, and a little bit more RAM than a "regular" desktop system. In Mavericks, running Server on a Mac used as a regular workstation is NOT recommended.

  • Cloud Backup for OSX Server

I'm trying to figure out what the best option is for a cloud based backup for OSX Server.
    Ideally:
    1.  Does not require a local user to be logged in on the server to function
    2.  Able to include/exclude files/folders
    3.  Bonus:  Cloud based sharing of folders (like dropbox, which just doesn't work well on OSX Server and of course isn't a backup option)
    Recs?

    CrashPlan Pro service.
Works well with OS X Server, retains permissions, ext attributes, ACLs, etc.
    $8/month unlimited
They do have an iOS app that lets you access your archive and save archived files to the ios device.
Some people have issues with java memory.. In general, I have fewer issues with this than other systems.
I backup about 180 machines (almost half are servers) with crashplan pro or crashplan pro enterprise.

  • Seeking best practice for disaster recovery for osx server

I am seeking a solid disaster recovery solution. I would be happy if it complements Time Machine, but I don't require that.
I use DAR2 for the linux systems, but with the aid of nice UI provided by the distro vendor. It provides all the files necessary to follow up a clean base OS install with a file restore to provide a full recovery from a disaster.
I just placed a new Mac Mini Server with the Promise Tech DS4600 in service, so I am eager to put a plan in place.
What do other Mac OS Server users do?
I would be most grateful for links to articles, products and suggestions.

For anyone who comes across this post, here is what I settled on:
The server is a mac mini server and is configured with RAID 1 over the two hard disks. I use DAR to backup the linux boxes to the OSX Server. Carbon Copy Cloner is used to backup the OSX Server to a 2 terabyte storage array.
Hopefully this will suffice for the time being. I continue to look for better approaches.

  • Set up airport express for osx server

    Hello,
This is my first post, im not a specialist, so hope to give the correct info.
I have a Speedtouch 530 (dsl modem) that is connected to an airport express. This is used to connect both a Macbook and iMac via wifi. Then I have upgraded the iMac to osx server, bc i would like to use is to share folder and wiki's on the web. My isp has also granted a fixed ip.
I would like to use this speedtouch in bridge mode in order to use the airport express as router. But i've been reading and trying for 2 weeks now, and the result is that i'm happy to be back online. But is still dont have a clue how to configure these things to get this server running.
    Any help is appreciated, Benjamin

    Hello Tesserax,
Thank you for your interest in this problem
Its the combination of both i think. In the speedtouch under: home netmetwork>devices>Assign the public IP address of a connection to a device. But then i get this message:
    (1) release the current private ip address of this device.
    (2) renew the ip address of this device in order to aquire the public ip address
after that i cant open the speedtouch any more (http://192.168.0.1) but the airport still recognizes it.
Also in the manual of osx server they say not to use a standard IP pool (to avoid double use this computers that want to log in). Do i have to change these IP before assigning the public IP to the airport express?
So i'd like to set the range to 10.0.8. and the speedtouch on exp 10.0.8.1
(Home > Home Network > Interfaces > LocalNetwork>configure>add IP>10.0.8.1 & 255.255.255.0) then later when trying to configure the airport pool of DHCP i get an start and ending error.
Another question, is it best to assign the public ip directly to the iMac or best to the airport?

  • Problem in setting up XCM Configuration for Local Server

    Hi
I have installed Local J2ee engine on my computer and have deployed E Commerce B2B B2C sca packages.
I am trying to complete the XCM configuration for my Local Engine. For below 4 links, I have done the configuration, creation of JCO, Shop, etc is done and have tested the JCO, the test is successful.   JCOs are pointing to ECC 6.0 which is development server and on development server the XCM configuration is working fine.
    http://<host>:<port>/b2b/admin/xcm/init.do
    http://<host>:<port>/b2c/admin/xcm/init.do
    http://<host>:<port>/isauseradm/admin/xcm/init.do
    http://<host>:<port>/shopadmin/admin/xcm/init.do
But below 2 links are not working and I am getting "Page can not be displayed" error.
    http://<host>:<port>/isauseradm/init.do
    http://<host>:<port>/shopadmin/init.do
I need to created 2 shops in http://<host>:<port>/shopadmin/init.do but since the page is not displaying I am not able to proceed and hence when I try to login to b2b b2c application
    http://<host>:<port>/b2b/init.do and http://<host>:<port>/b2c/ init.do , I am getting an error
"The shoplist read from buffer is empty",
I think this error can be resolved by creating 2 shops in http://<host>:<port>/shopadmin/init.do, but
    http://<host>:<port>/shopadmin/init.do itself in not displaying.
    Please can you help.
    Thanks

    Hi
I checked the mentioned Patch Levels, everything seems to be fine.
After I did few changes in JCOs and checked the XCM configuration throughly shopadmin URL (http://<host>:<port>/shopadmin/shopadmin/init.do) has started working.
Now I have maintained 2 shops and can see the B2B and B2C web portals fine.
But as soon as I select any material, it is giving error saying error in XCM configuration related to IPC.
could you pleaase help me out with this?
Also, as soon as I click on the B2B Login link, it dumps.
And useradmin URL  http://<host>:<port>/isauseradm/useradmin/init.do   is still giving "Page can not be displayed",
These problems are related to XCM configuration, but not sure where exactly and which configuration is missing. please can you suggest ? Any XCM configuration related document will also be helpful.
    Regards,

  • Minimum requirements for home server

I am looking to get a cheap iMac, Mini or iBook to use as a home server to run iTunes 24/7. I will be attaching an external HD for storage space for my media and will stream wirelessly to Apple TV over 802.11g using an Airport Express. What would be the minimum requirement for such a setup? Would the minimum requirement be what the latest version of iTunes require?
    Message was edited by: Mac4lfe

Hi Mac4lfe: If you want to SYNCH between the Mac and the ATV, then any G3 will do, just expect the synching to be slow. If you want to STREAM from the Mac to ATV, then a G3 will do for music but not for video. If you want to stream video, a G4 will do, but you will get a lot of beachballs when you do anything on iTunes and sometimes the streaming will fail. I suggest you get the cheapest Intel Mac, you will have a much better experience when streaming. Lastly, remember you will need a screen for the Mini, there will always be warnings, error messages, updates, etc in iTunes that you need a screen, mouse and keyboard for. Very lastly, you can just get the ATV and buy music, TV shows, Movies and rent movies without a Mac. 160GP shall be enough. I have 40 movies, 20 full TV seasons and 6000 songs and am just over 400GB.

  • Which HDD for OSX server

I have a LaCie 2Big Network2 connected wirelessly via an AEBS. My question is, does anyone know if this setup can run OSX Server? I've contacted LaCie, but so far no answer. Or does OSX need to be on a Host machine, such as my MBP?

To be honest with myself; I'm not really certain what I need to accomplish with the server, it's probably more of 'I want to do it and learn from the experience'. Here is a topic that I created some time back but have not taken the initiative to go forward. I apologize that the link is not 'hot', you'll have to paste the url.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2214445&tstart=0
I guess I just like to 'tinker and learn' and that's probably the biggest reason for wanting a server.

  • Heartbleed update for OSX Server on the way?

Hi all.  Just curious about the Heartbleed situation as it relates to OSX Server.  Any insights?

Right, that was the most detailed information I could find.
I just wanted to let you know that I did research the inards of the effected software and found nothing.
What is effectively being discussing here is also known as reverse engineering.  If the text strings related to OpenSSL were changed or were expurgated from the tool or have been obfuscated, then grep or strings or related won't find the keywords, and it'll be a false negative.
If OpenSSL is more overtly included in the package, then the grep and strings and find commands and related should find evidence of OpenSSL.
Check for updates from the tools and packages that use SSL/TLS, and run the tests, and upgrade to current.
Also review the network devices in use for updates, and particularly if there are any outward-facing or remotely-accessible HTTPS or SSL connections on any of those devices.
There's no easy way to do this.  This is analogous to the problems that anti-malware scanners have, too; finding needles in haystacks.

  • Optimum setup for OSX server for small LAN?

Our new XServe takes a while to save files, etc. across the network. I don't know enough to configure everything properly, but I'm able to do enough to get it going. Is there an optimum network configuration for a small office who really only needs a file server? Should the two ethernet ports from the server be going directly into the switch? What's the best configuration for 5 computers, an xserve, a dsl modem, and a switch? Thanks!

to give you some idea, I have a test intel xserve 10.5.2 server connected to a 10-100 switch read-write is almost instantaneous depending on file size
(when OD has not crashed). no other services running other than AFP, DHCP, DNS, OD master. Another live tiger server with over 70 users,AFP, DHCP, DNS, OD, Mail. on average file read write access is few seconds dependent on file size over the wired lan. no complaints either on wireless.
with only 5 users I would expect fast file access this would really be dependent on the file sizes and what other services your server is providing
connecting all ports to the switch, you will only be able to use link aggregation if your switch supports it. you could also use the second port to monitor the xserve

  • License key requirement for OSX server

I am confused about the licensing requirements for commercial copies of OSX server. I have an old G5 Xserve that came with no software and the system drive was toast. I have been running Ubuntu on it and hardware-wise it is fine. However I would like to get it running OSX server, preferably Leopard as I think that is the last version that is compatible with the PPC hardware.
Anyway I am confused about the software license. If I buy a copy of Leopard server from Ebay or another source, should it come with the license number or whatever is needed, or was this only available as part of the original hardware issue? If so, is there anyway to recover this from the hardware or from Apple so that I can run this as intended.
    Thanks.

    Couple of things:
OS X Server 10.5 is the terminal system for the PPC G5 systems so that's where you should be looking.
You do need a serial number for OSXS and that should come with whatever discs you purchase. (There's a sticker on the outside of the disc wrapper like most software.)
The Xserve came with system disks but I don't think Apple has a policy of resupplying OSXS system disks if you lose your originals, if that's what you're asking.
The good news is that G5 Xserves are much more liberal about accepting non-Apple replacement disks so you're probably ready once you get the system disks.
