Minimum Free Disc space?

Anyone know what minimum free space is good to maintain on a boot volume?
How about for a non-boot disc used for files?
I have heard 15% free is advised for boot volumes, but I haven't heard of minimums on discs that are used only for files.
thank you!
r

My system prefers at least 17% free....or 35gb on a 200gb drive. (Which I think formatted out at 189gb)
Lower than that, it gets really cranky. (spinning rainbow, long delays, failure to launch some programs.
For video projects, I must have about 70gb free, as rendering 1.75 hrs of video in iDVD needs about 35gb for the temp render files.
Never noticed a theoretical or actual limit on (solely) data drives...but then again, I'm not close to filling my 2nd & 3rd drives.

  • OK to remove MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.6.dmg from Downloads folder to free disc space?

To free disc space I've been removing old files.  MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.6.dmg is by far the largest, at 1 GB.  I seem to recall using this file when I had to revert back to 10.6.6 after having font problems with 10.6.7.  I believe it's OK to just remove it to a backup source, but want to check before doing that, just in case.  Thanks for your council and any enlightenment on the function of such update dmgs, once they've been used.

IMHO you have a more serious problem here. If 1 GB is going to make a difference in the amount of free space you can notice then your disk is probably too full and you should be looking for more drastic solutions to gain free space such as deleting your files.

I'm trying to burn a Magic DVD in iDVD and I keep getting a message stating that there is not enough free disc space for encoding the remaining assets. How do I resolve this?

It means your hard drive is too full to accomodate the project and its many swap files etc.
You need to move some files (not applications) to your external hard drive, and keep at least 25-30GB free.

  • Free Disc Space

    Hi!
Does someone know a way to determinate the free disc space on harddisc or floppy disc with the help of the Java API??? Maybe there should be a way with a java.io.File object (returned by java.io.File.listRoots())...
And another question: Does someone know a "non Pure-Java" way to receive the number and names of mounted filesystem under ?nix. I can only get the / directory, but I want to know, how many drives are in a system and how many free disc space is available at every on this drives/partitions/directories....

I think just command.com will do, you don't have to put it in the full path.If you're on NT then it's different, it' cmd.exe . Plus I think the
switch you passed should be a capital C rather than lowercase c.
For convenience you might want to stuff everything into an array and pass it to exec as a array.
OK, the CreateProcess IOException comes from the fact
that the "dir" command isn't a real command (I think
its part of the command.com). Now I tried to start a
    process with the following commandline:
    ...exec("c:\\windows\\command.com /c dir c:\\");
The pathname can be substitute by system variables
(see Properties). But the process doesn't return any
kind of text (only on the console...arg)...

  • Contiguous Free Disc Space

I have an 1.25ghz eMac running OS 10.3.9 and 256 mb RAM. I recently purchased DiskWarrior which fixed a problem for me.
DW recommended that I create 145mb of free disc space on my HDD for building a replacement directory rather than write the new dirctory over the top of the existing directory each time.
How does one make 145mb of free space on one's HDD without optimising the HDD?
I understand that if I start the eMac up in Classic (OS 9) Mode I can run Alsoft's PlusOptimiser 1.3 to optimise the HDD
How does one start up in OS 9 mode on an eMac (or any other Mac)? The best I can manage is to start up Classic after having already booted up in OS X. If I can do this, I can use my copy of PlusOptimiser 1.3.
I have tried using the generic Install disc for Mac OS 9.1 that I purchased once from Apple for my PowerMac 6500/300. However although it appears in the Startup Disk Prefs Panel nothing happens
I have an external HDD connected by firewire. I have installed the eMac's system on it and I can free boot from thihs if I want to.
Booting from the external HDD doesn't work because PlusOptomiser sees OS X on it. PlusOptimiser 1.3 won't work with HDDs which share OS 9 and 10 it seems. I need to boot from a pure OS 9 disc it seems.
Yes I so know that it shouldn't be necessary to optimise the eMacs HDD nevertheless it remains a matter of fact that I don't have any contiguous disc space to enable Disk Warrior to run at its safest extent.
    PM6500/300 (603e)   Mac OS 9.1.x

    Hi El Deanio,
I wouldn't be concerned about DW and it wanting 145 MB of contiguous free space. You obviously would have that amount.
It seems to be a spurious message.
Check out this post, which among other things mentions this.

  • Not enough free disc space for encoding remaining assets

I get this message when I try to print my DVD   "not enough free disc space for encoding remaining assets"
Does this mean I have too much videos and material on the computer.  I have tried to delete several but it does not seem to be making any difference.  Please help/explain...  Thank you!

IDVD is limited by the duration of your movie and nothing else.
A single layer DVD is good for about two hours.  A dual layer DVD is good for about three hours and 45 minutes.
You do need a certain amount of free space to create DVDs.
To burn your iDVD project to a single-layer DVD disc, you should have 8 to 10 gigabytes (GB) of free disk space on your hard disk, depending on the size of your project. For double-layer discs, you need 15 to 20 GB of free disk space. To check how much disk space you have, Control-click the hard disk icon on your desktop and choose Get Info. Then look next to Available to see how much space you have.
The encoded DVD files remain on your hard disk inside your project’s folder. If you do not want to save the encoded files after you burn your project to a disc, you can delete them.

  • How much free disc space should be on a new MBP?

On my brand new MBP, my first mistake was I did not immediately time machine the new mac or record the "available" disc size in it when it first came out of the box.
My next mistake was I ran migration assistant twice, and it failed with unspecified errors both times.
Now when I go to Apple->AboutThisMac->Storage, it reports OTHER as 121.48 GB, and Audio/Apps/Movies/Photos/Backups together are several dozen GB in total. So OTHER is taking up most of the used disc space right now.
Disc utility says the HD has used 151GB total, with 348.1 GB available.
Capacity of the disc size is 499.1GB
I have not yet put any data on this MBP, unless the migration utility did it without me knowing it and didn't delete it when it failed.
    What exactly is OTHER data?
How can I find out if my failed migration attempts has put 100GB or thereabouts on this machine that I can safely delete?
How much disc space is USED right out of the box on this MBP (2014 13" retina, 500gig drive)?
    Thanks!!!!

Here is a definition of OTHER:  http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202867
Download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper (free) and open it.  It will show all of you files and the respective sizes.  this should permit you to see exactly what you have on your MBP.
I would estimate that the OSX and the initial applications should take about 20 GB space or less.
    Ciao.

  • Deleting files, but free disc space doesn't budge

so, I was just cleaning up my harddrive. I just deleted another 2GB and yet.. free disk space did not increase. Not even a tiny bit. What am I missing here? The files were an old project that I moved to an external drive. Yet free disk space is stubbornly remaining at precicely 59.47GB.. Why is this happening to me?... There IS a God, and he hates me?
    This is totally baffling..

    Linc,
ok, I admit I'm overreacting. However.. I'm read local snapshots start deleting themselves when 80% of the disk is full. I'm a total layperson.. but, maybe that's because HDDs are said to operate best when there's at least 20% free? So if the local snapshots were indeed totally harmless, why would they need to curate themselves this way, why not just fill up ALL the free space, or 99% instead of 80%? I might be mistaken.. but in general, the more free disk space, the better, right? It means less fragmentation and more room for the system and swap space, etc... that is what I meant by cluttering up your drive. Who's to say 30% free wouldn't be better, especially considering that I almost never actually have to use TM.
Yet Apple does not even allow me to turn it off in the TM preferences, forcing power users to resort to terminal workarounds, stranding intermediate users like me since I do not mess with terminal (yes I know I must seem like a n00b but unlike, say, my mom, I can actually grasp most of the concepts invovled and am usually capable of making an informed choice about how I want my own darn computer to handle my own darn files), and of course safely guarding the dumbest...everyone's mom...um..the beginner users from having to understand anything for it to "just work". Gurrrr..

  • We could not complete your purchase (disc space error)

I got this message for a re-download of a game: There is not enough disk space available to install the product.
The size of the game (Bioshock Infinitive) is 40GB, but the point is I have 93GB free disc space.
What can I do to solve this error?
    Thank you in advance.
PS: English isn't my mother tongue, hope I didn't make to many misspellings. ;-)

First, the App Store will not allow a download that, when expanded, would leave less than the minimum amount of available space on the startup volume that Apple considers necessary, which is about 9 GB. The download is a compressed archive that will usually expand to about twice its size. Both the archive and the expanded files will be present at the same time, so the actual amount of space needed is about three times the size of the archive.
If you're trying to add a large amount of data all at once, and you get an alert of insufficient space, then from the menu bar, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Time Machine
If the padlock icon is closed, click it to unlock the settings and authenticate. Turn Time Machine OFF, then back ON and close the preference pane. Restart the computer. Test.

  • Free disk space issue after iOS5

I have an iPad 1 16GB and after I updated to iOS5 the free disc space reduced so that now I have only 3GB free. 10,6GB is shown as "other". Can anybody tell me what this is and how I can increase the free disk space?

It shouldn't be that large unless, for example, you've got lots of videos in third-party video apps (or other third-party apps with large content) - it's usually caused by corrupt files. The only way the I know of reducing the size of 'other' is to restore back to factory defaults, and you could then try restoring to your backup which hopefully won't copy the 'other' back (or you might have to just sync content back and not restore to your backup).

  • Installation of Portal fails with Disc space error

    Hello,
I want to install EP but during setup I get this error:
Check for free disc space in tmp and usr directories for at least 600MG.
So first, what means MG, should this be MB?
On our root filesystem, which includes both directories, I have 25GB space free!!!
Can anyone help me? Regards Manfred

    Hi all,
now I'm back to this topic and it seems that Installing Enterprise Portal is a way with some barriers.
-Firstly it seems "600MG" is only wrongly written from SAPINST.
    - One Question to Daniel: "the page size of the datavolume", how can this be checked and changed.
    - I have verified our free disc space and of course, there's enough.
    - I checked the Code of the Analyzer Job and found what's wrong. Inside this, there happens an <i>execution of an Unix command "df -k" for both directories and examining the free space with an "Unix-awk" on that result</i>. But in our case, where we use Logical Volume Groups, we get an empty result, because the displayed Column for the free space is on the next line.<b>I renamed df to d_f and have written a small, new  df-script "/bin/d_f -Pl $1 $2" and then the SAP-Installer continues</b> !!!
    - Next failure occured during Deploying DQE (especially to com.sapportals.dqe.beans we get a ClassNotFoundException for com.metamatrix.platform.service.api.exception.ServiceException), but after restarting the J2EE-Engine and restarting SapInst it continues.
    - Next Error, now blocking:
Info: Initial deployment: Selected development component 'com.sapportals.portaladmin.defaultwizards'/'sap.com'/'SAP AG'/'609.20041012204607.0000' will be deployed.

  • Magic Movie - how much disc space is required

I have an hour tape of holiday movies which I shall edit some time soon. Having just installed iMovie HD and read the new features I thought I might try a quick and dirty burn of the tape so I can at least see what I recorded without using the camera and TV as DVD-Rs are now so cheap.
How much free disc space is required for this. Were I to edit and burn I would expect about 18 Gb for the clips and another 18-20 for the burn. Will I need nearly 40GB for a Magic Movie?

    David,
You need to leave alot of space . How much? Well it's better posted in iDVD forum but I think your calculations are right. I hope you have an extrnl drive. It makes these things much "easier"- at least from a space point of view.
You may gain some space by sending your finished movie back to tape , delete the project to get back space, & reimport from tape ,then burn.
Easier way-get a standalone DVD burner with DVDRW+. Then youu can erase & re-use. Quick & dirty in real time!
