Minimum NAT/firewall settings for iChat audio/video to work?

I've read the docs on teh ports and firewall issues but it is still unclear to me.
I have
1. An OS X Server 10.5.2 connected to the internet behind a router with NAT and running a firewall. NAT and of course the firewall are under my control. I've opened up the iChat Server SSL port (5223) on the OS X Server's firewall. I've put a 5223 redirect on the router to my OS X Server system. iChat is configured on this system and several users have permission to use iChat. The NAT table on the router is restricted, only ports I want to serve (e.g. 25, 22, 5223) are redirected to my server, the rest of incoming connections are blocked at the NAT (safer that way).
2. An OS X 10.5.2 client behind a NAT setup in another part of the world.
3. An OS X 10.5.2 client behind a NAT setup in another part of the world.
Both clients I can manage the firewall of the client, but I cannot manage anything on the router.
WIth this set up on both systems users have successfully connected to my OS X Server's iChat server using SSL. Text chat works. So I can assume that iChat Server works, that the permissions and login is OK, that SSL is OK.
But neither audio not video works. I cannot establish an audio or video connection because the connection fails. The iChat connection log says
2008-02-21 20:49:53 +0100: user@fqdn2: Error -8 (Did not receive a response from 0x18c09b30.)
there is nothing in appfirewall.log on the client.
The clients should work OK behind NAT. But my guess is that the server needs more than what I am giving it. However, I have been unable to find out what a minimum set of NAT redirects and firewall ports open is that would enable me to let these two clients do voice chat via my OS X Server at that other location.
Any tip for information on how to set up the server side minimally and safely would be welcome.
Thanks,
G

Hi,
Several things.
1) iChat server does in fact use an SSL Login on port 5223 (Tiger does not do the SSL but is still on the same port.
This does not allow the other data on port 5220 that the Jabber side of iChat needs.
Apple Doc http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93208 see item 6
2) It also ignores the fact iChat uses a completely different set of ports to the A/V Chat
So an AIM Login is port 5190 in those mentioned in item 6
port 5297, 5298 and 5353 are the Bonjour ones.
That leaves 5060, 5678, 16384-16403 for A/V chats in Tiger
5678, 16393-16402 in Leopard
The pics and Table are for Panther and Tiger. See the Table at the bottom http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/pantherports.html
The changes from Tiger to Leopard in the port Usage for A/V chats is documented here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306688 (Hence the none use of port 5060 and the smaller groupfor the actual A/V Chats)
3) Check out the two server forums for Leopard > iChat Server http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1235
And Tiger/OS X Server 10.4 > Collaboration Services http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=700 as they maybe other issues that I am not aware of on the Server side.
So Leopard Jabber/iChat Server needs 14 ports
5220, 5222, 5223 on TCP and
5678, 16393-16402 on UDP
Tiger needs the A/V ports to include 5060 and extend the group to 20 ports (16384-16403)
I hope this helps.

  • IChat audio/video not working in a particular scenario.

Three differnt people with 3 different setups trying to do an audio chat:
John: MacBook(2.0Ghz, Leopard), connected via AirportExpress, using an AIM account
Anne: MacBook(2.4Ghz, Snow Leopard), connected via a 3G USB Modem, using a .Mac account
Mark: iMac(2.0 Ghz C2D, Tiger), connected via AirportExtreme, using an AIM account
John can voice and video chat with both Anne and Mark, no problem. But Anne and Mark constantly get the Error-8. (But strangely Anne and Mark can share files via iChat just fine.)
If it was a firewall issue, wouldn't one of the three be excluded from any voice/video chat completely ? Im starting to wonder if it's the NAT/PMP issue as well, cause it doesn't seem to be an issue when connecting to the other person.
I have scoured the web looking for a solution but to no avail.

    Hi,
    Re 1)
iChat makes a Connection that is Peer-to-Peer when doing Audio Only and Video chats.
To do this it uses a method of going through NAT Devices (Network Address Translation)
NAT Is not a standard. It is a vague description of things that happen in most domestic routers to share one IP between many computers and other devices.
There are about 4 main ways of doing it See Here
Realistically iChat can be Fussy as to how NAT is done. (Some methods don't seem to "Play Nicely" together)
So you can get what looks like intermittent symptoms.
    Re 2)
I am on a Leopard booted computer and my AIRPORT UTILITY is version 5.5.1
I don't have an Airport Base Station so posting a pic is useless at this point.
The older firmware I am thing of popped up a very small Window asking for the Password before giving you the main window.
The version I have lists the different Base Station it can find down the left with a manual Configure Button and a first time set up button on the right (I forget the name).
It sounds like he has something closer to my version.
The Port Mapping Protocol may be "Greyed Out" if the Device is NOT "Sharing an IP" on the main Internet icon/pane. (On the current version I believe the NAT tab disappears if this is the case).
    Re the Zyxel.
Not particularly iChat Friendly as a range.
There is something about them logging in to AIM on Port 5190 on the TCP Protocol and iChat send files on port 5190 on UDP that these modems don't like (Dual use of the same port)
This may be related to Port Forwarding.
With setting up Port Forwarding you point one port to one IP (Computer) (multiple ports one at a time for iChat)
This means that other computers cannot then use those ports (ports Cannot Be Forwarded Twice).
Not all devices specify Protocols to do this but the Zyxels do seem have an issue with and for some reason this crosses over into A/V Chats.
    SOLUTION
In iChat go to the Preferences > Accounts > Server Settings tab when Logged out.
Change th Login port from 5190 to 443
This port is memorable as it is below the 1024 threshold in most domestic devices (all ports below this are Open to everyone) and is used by Web Browser for Secure sites (such as Banks and the Sign-in here to post).
It is also used by some mail servers.
    The Modem most likely routes.
    This means two things.
    1) the Airport Base Station should NOT - Set it to Bridge (Off) Mode in the drop down at the bottom of the Internet pane (Port Mapping will not be needed then either).
    2) the ports need to be allowed in the Modem.
    See this page
This is the instructions to access a P660R-HW T1v2 I am not sure what the difference the HW means
Do the pics look like his set up pages ?
Most likely he will have to Look for UPnP - Try the Advanced menu item.
He will not need the Port Forwarding if he Enables UPnP.
He may have set up pages that look more like these pics EQ 660 R
Here you can plainly see UPnP in the middle menu 9At the bottom)
    Summary
Change port for Login in iChat
Set Base Station to Not Route.
Enable UPnP in Zyxel modem. (DO NOT use Port Forwarding despite the Links (they are just for the Pics and Instruction on how to access the device).
If he cannot find UPnP come back to us.
He may have to set Port Forwarding if it is only one computer.
As he is on Tiger he cannot do iChat Screen Sharing so that will not be so much of an issue.

  • IChat audio/video not working: bonjour over computer-to-computer network

My girlfriend has a brand new MacBook Pro 15". I have a 3 year old PowerBook. Both running 10.4.9 and iChat 3.1.8. We are currently sitting right next to each other, and yet have been unable to connect to an audio or video chat by any method.
To completely eliminate the router from the equation I created a computer to computer network which she joined. Both of us have our firewalls off, and both of us have our Quicktime streaming speed set to 1.5Mbps. We tried to create an audio connection over Bonjour. I got an error -7 and she got an error -8.
There are many threads reporting the same error, but most of the solutions involve changing router settings. I figured that since this is on a computer-to-computer connection there is no router involved. It would be nice to be able to get this working over the general internet, but I figure if it doesn't work in this very limited setting it will never work. Any help? Much appreciated.

Yep - did that on both computers, to no avail:
Here's the first section of the error messages from both computers. (I can post more if it's helpful.)

Options for when an iOS device gets locked because of forgotten passcode:
Restore (and reset passcode) on your device by connecting it to the last computer to which it was connected:
iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring iOS software - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you cannot connect it to the computer to which the device was last connected (or the device was never connected to a computer) you will have to use recovery mode to completely reset the device, losing all data:

  • What are the ports required for the Audio, Video and A/V conferencing when the following end points are enabled for QoS in Lync 2013 server?

    Hi All,
What are the ports required for the Audio, Video and A/V conferencing when the following clients are enabled for QoS in Lync 2013 server?
    Client Type
Port range  and Protocol required for Audio
Port range and Protocol required for
    Video
Port range and Protocol required for
    A/Vconferencing
    Windows Desktop   Client
    Windows mobile App
    Iphone
    Ipad
    Andriod phone
    Andriod Tablet
    MAC desktop client
    Please advise. Many Thanks.

Out of the box, 1024-65535 for all of the client ports.  :)
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg398833.aspx
You'll want to tune your client ports a bit
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj204760.aspx as seen here, and then the client ports would use those ranges which is easier to set QoS markings.  I'm not sure the mobile clients respect that setting.
Elan's got the best writeup for Windows clients here:
    http://www.shudnow.net/2013/02/16/enabling-qos-for-lync-server-2013-and-various-clients-part-1/
However, the marking of the packets is the tricky part.  Windows can do it via Group Policy, but for the other clients you'll need to have the network specifically prioritize ports regardless of DSCP markings.  You have to do it based on ports
as the traffic could be peer to peer.

We will customize a very detailed reply, but
    (a) What are the properties of your source media?
    (b) What did you or the program set as the project preset to match the properties of the source media?
    (c) What specific requirements do you have for this H.264.mov export file?
File size can be a compromise between bitrate, file size, and quality.

  • Best settings for Green Screen Video with Canon Mark iii

    HI
What are the ideal camera settings for Green screen video.
    Iso?
    aperature?
Depth of field settings (best to have the green screen a bit out of focus?)
Any other camera settings would be helpful.
    Thanks
    Rowby

    Hi Rowby!
Thanks so much for writing in about green screen shooting with the EOS 5D Mark III camera.  Green screen shooting can come down to some crucial elements and how well you handle the camera and the lighting.
Arguably the most important thing is to have excellent lighting on the screen.  Without this, the keys used to replace the green screen will not be accurate.  So hopefully you have a good set of lights you will be using to actually light the physical screen.
With regards to ISO, shoot as low as possible.  We suggest that you stick in the ISO 200-400 range where possible.  With good, high key, proper lighting on the screen this shouldn't be an issue.
Aperture should actually be in the higher end of the range, you would want to stick to apertures around f/8 and above.  Again, with adequate lighting this shouldn't be out of reach.  This is so the green screen is more in focus, versus having it out of focus, which would not yield successful results.
Use an appropriate lens to the subject, for example if you are doing wide shots- use only the focal length needed for the shoot and no wider.  For head shots, close ups- use a lens that will get you close.
Following these suggestions should give you some pretty good results.  Remember, if this is your first attempt don't be discouraged, green screen shooting can be difficult to accomplish.
We wish you the best of luck in your endeavor!

Looking for a back up drive for photos and videos that works with time machine, prefer wireless. Time capsule has poor reviews and already have BT hub that serves as a good router. 3gb or 4gb capacity preferred but 2 would suffice.

Plug a NAS into the BT Hub that does TM. Look at Synology.
You just use the wireless of the hub.
But the cheapest solution is still the TC.

    Hi,
Mark should go to the set up pages of the Airport he has and in the Internet icon/Pane > NAT tab he should have Port Mapping Protocol turned On.
If he has the much older firmware I will need to see pics (again) to remind me.
The other potential issues is what modems are John and Mark using in front of the Airport base Stations ?
Are they routing modems ? Cable modems tend not to route and DSL one do.
They should not have two DHCP servers on their LAN's ( A Base station set to "Share An IP" will be doing DHCP and a routing modem will most likely be doing it by default)

  • Ichat audio/video

I know many people have posted their issues with ichat's audio/video, but I haven't found any solutions that would help me. My problems are, every time I open ichat's preferences and try to click on 'Audio/Video' ichat crashes, you can probably guess that I also can't video chat with any of my peers, nor can I screen share. A couple of months ago I was able to, I'm not sure if there is any relation, but ever since I set up time machine through my AirPort Extreme Base Station, thats when I noticed problems. If any additional info is need to help solve my problem please let me know. Thanks for the help.

    Hi,
Log on to the Airport base Station using Airport Utility (Application/Utilities).
    Use the Manual Configure button.
    Go to the Internet iCon/pane.
    Select NAT tab
Enable Port Mapping Protocol (You do not have to set ports)
From the first part of the Internet Pane make sure any DNS server listed are copied or show in System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > TCP/IP tab.
In that same place turn Off IPv6.
Post back with results as we may have to get you to delete a .plist to get ichat to be stable.

  • Why can't I access preferences or account settings for iChat

Let me start by saying I'm a newbie. I would like to use iChat. I set up a .mac account, a Google/Gmail account and an AIM account.
However, I cannot seem to log-in or use iChat using any of the accounts. I get to the Account Set Up page, enter the log-in info, get to the "Encrypted Chat" window, but cannot see any "Done" button that iChat says I have to select to start using iChat. Nor can I access any of the iChat account settings or preferences.
It doesn't matter if I'm on my wireless network (linksys WRt54G) or connected via ethernet. My firewall settings in System Preferences is open.
    What am I doing wrong?
    thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
I am a bit confused as to what stage you are up to.
I think it is the difference in the words you had used (and where you have used them) compared to how I tend to think about iChat
I would like to use iChat. I set up a .mac account, a Google/Gmail account and an AIM account.
I take this means that you have Registered Screen Names at the required places.
I get to the Account Set Up page, enter the log-in info, get to the "Encrypted Chat" window, but cannot see any "Done" button that iChat says I have to select to start using iChat.
I am therefore assuming this mean you are stuck in the Start Up Screens ?
    Start Up Screens
You get a Welcome Screen First
A place to Add ("set up" in my speak) an AIM or Apple Screen name. It has a place to Add your First Name Last name details - which may be pre-filled from the Address Book.
This pic is from iChat 4 but should be the same in iChat 5
You need to use the middle Drop down to select which type of account you are using/setting Up.
The option to Enable Bonjour Chats is the next screen followed by the option to Set Up Jabber (Or Google) IDs
In iChat 5 there are optional items under the Text Fields to set up Server Names if different to the ending of your Jabber ID and the Server Port to use.
This is followed by a Video Snapshot option/Preview of Video Screen.
The Last is the Done Screen which tends to list the Names you are setting up.
If I have summarised correctly this is where you have got to then Open the Folder with the Little House iCon (Hard Drive/Users/(your account)
In here then open the Library one and the Preferences one in there.
Use either List View or CoverFlow (Also a List) an find anything that starts com.apple.ichat..... and ends .plist and drag it to the Trash.
Try setting up just one Name (You can add more in iChat Later).
If that does not work can you click though all the screen without adding any details at all ?

  • Best Streamclip settings for iPhone 4 Video - to edit in FCE

First, the problem: iPhone 4 records HD video in h.264. But Final Cut Express doesn't have sequence settings for editing h.264 or iPhone video clips.
The solution: I'm using Streamclip to convert all of my iPhone 4 videos to a format FCE lets me edit in.
Question: What are the optimal settings to insure that my final output retains quality almost equal to the original video shot on my iPhone? (More specifically, I plan on uploading to Youtube as a HD video).
I've read somewhere that I should convert to Quicktime Movie format, with Apple Intermediate Codec 720p 30fps. Is that the best compression type to convert to for editing iPhone 4 videos in FCE? If so, how should the other settings in streamclip be jiggered? For instance, does it make much difference if I set the Quality slider to 100% (As opposed to the default at 50%?) What about audio compression settings?
(P.S. I think it's very annoying that I can't directly edit a video from iPhone 4 on another consumer Apple product, the FCE. Does FCP let me directly edit h.264/iphone 4 videos?)

The slider makes no difference as AIC is variable bit rate within a specific range. No audio compression in FCE ever. Uncompressed stereo 48k, the video standard sample rate.
It would be truly miraculous if FCE worked with iPhone media as the current version predates it by three years, which in computer lifetimes is two generations, basically the equivalent of your grandfather having developed an app for a smartphone when he was a young man. FCP is a mere year old, well before the iPhone did video. Furthermore, if you'd read the forums, you'd see that H.264 is an acquisition and delivery forward. It is not used in production. The codec is not suitable for efficient production and really should never be used there. It's very unfortunate that camera manufacturers have taken the cheap way out and used this codec, rather than actually developing and using a suitable intraframe production codec.

  • FCE export settings for higher quality video

Hello. I'm a self-schooled newspaper video features producer and relative newcomer to Final Cut Express, shifting from Premium Elements. I've just begun using it to upload videos to my newspaper's finicky web system, which will only accept .flv files of a certain size. My modus operandi has been to export my videos as large .avi files, using Quicktime conversion and DV/DVCPRO/NTSC, with medium quality, with 16 bit sound set at 32 Khz. Then I run that .avi through the Adobe Flash Media Encoder with a frame rate of 15 fps, deinterlacing and resizing the screen to 640 by 480. This procedure (outlined by our former video editor) produces serviceable web quality video (You can see video that results from using these settings at http://wvgazette.com/multimedia). So, two questions: 1) I have created an 8-minute FCE music video for my band and wish to export it at a higher quality (for use on Vimeo) than these newspaper settings. Which of them do I change so that a higher quality video results without waiting all night for a massive file to upload? 2) And wthere might I turn for guidance on better understanding the Sanskrit of FCE video export settings for newbies? Thanks for any help.

The simplest way to produce good quality video for the internet is:-
    1. File>Export Using QT Conversion.
    2. The "Format" window should say, "QT Movie".
    3. In "Use" select "LAN/Intranet" from the dropdown menu.
    4. Click "Save" and when it has finished encoding, upload it.
Do not mess about altering audio settings, frame rates etc.
Using the above settings an 8 minute video would be encoded in around 20 minutes (depending on computer speed) and would be well under 100MB.
    Is that too big?

  • Firewall settings for websites

    Hello All:
Is there a way to set a Firewall setting/level for an individiual web site?
We have a DSL service and use a Verizon Westell 7500 modem/router with four ports.  The Firewall setting had been on medium and the Firewall was turned off on the Mac Mini. With these settings we were unable to get into a web site.
I went into the Westell control panel and lowered the Firewall level to the low setting, I also turned on the Firewall on the Mac Mini and now we are able to get into the same web site.
The problem is - we are afraid that the low setting for the Firewall in the Westell might be dangerious to us for continous usage.
So, I wanted to know if there is a way to set a  low Firewall setting just for the website we had trouble with and have a medium Firewall setting
    for are regular usage.
    Thanks for any input.

An NAT router is what enables you to share a single Internet connection among two or more devices. That's what you have.
It protects any network services you have running on your own network from being accessed from outside your network. You don't need a firewall for that, unless you have intentionally exposed services to the Internet.
A firewall does nothing to protect you from malware, if that's what you're worried about. I suggest you turn it off.
