Minimum requirements to stream from and sync to?

I am considering purchasing an AppleTV and was hoping to use my old 533MHz G4 PowerMac as the "host" for my media. I'm running Tiger Server on it with a wire connection to my AirPort Extreme (802.11n). I know the PowerMac itself can't play the HD video based on iTunes 9 requirements but I am hoping I can plug my 1TB drive into it and still stream from and sync back to it.
Any thoughts on the possibility this will work?

as long as you can get the latest and greatest iTunes running on it, it should work fine...

  • Minimum requirements for streaming from Mac to Apple TV

I'm thinking about getting an Apple TV, but one major requirement is that I can share my Mac desktop so I can stream TV shows from cbs.com and other websites and watch them on the big TV. Do I have to have Mountain Lion to do this? Or can I do it with a lower OS?

  • Can my ATV be set to stream movies and sync music?

Can I sync my music and photos and at the same time stream my movies? I only have a 40Gb ATV and don't want to fill it with only a few movies. I have my iTunes music and iPhoto folders stored on my TC and my movies stored in a separate folder on my TC.
    Thanks
    Rob B

    yes...
    in iTunes
Summary Tab... click on "Custom Sync"
uncheck "show only synced items on my AppleTV"... this will make unsynced items show up on the appleTV menu... if they are not synced then they will stream when clicked on they act just as if they were actually synced
go to the movies tab and uncheck "Sync" (sync is off)
go to the music and photos tab and make sure "Sync" is checked (sync is on)
turn syncing on or off as you require for TV Shows and Podcasts

  • How to stream video AND sync Music + iPhoto from the same iTunes library ?

Hi everybody, my iTunes library is full of Music and with movies "linked" outside itself (to a external hard disk connected to my iMac), I'd like to sync this iTunes library to my AppleTV as follows:
    1) the video should be set in streaming mode hence itself not being copied to ATV hard disk;
    2) the music and my iPhoto library should be sync'ed (hence copied!) to ATV hard disk.
How could I achieve that ?
    Thanks a lot.

Custom sync with Photo set to sync preferentially and all music syncable checked in the device music tabs.

  • Streaming from the Sync'd computer

Hello, I was under the impression that I can use the computer that is sync'd to Apple TV to also stream to Apple TV.
Just bought an Apple TV and I have it setup to do a custom sync in iTunes with my entire pictures, movies, and tv shows getting sync'd. I have the music section set not to sync.
When I go to Apple TV it says "There are no songs on your Apple TV. Set up a connection with iTunes, or purchase music fomr the iTunes store. If you already setup iTunes, make sure it is open on your computer."
The statement above to me imples that if I open my iTunes that I ought to see my music. Am I wrong?
Also the "show only synced items on my Apple TV" is not checked. I can successfully sync to Apple TV and I can also play music from iTunes by selecting Apple TV from the combo box in the lower right hand side of iTunes.
    Thanks for any help, Scott

I'm not sure where that idea has arisen from.
Your synced library should also stream anything that isn't synced.
There might be other reasons why streaming isn't working here, but it isn't the latest 2.1 software that is the direct cause. This could be one reason.

I'd recommend reading that. All of it. And then I'd recommend doing everything it tells you to do in the "Getting Started" article.

  • Internet required to stream from my mac or iPhone?

For at least the next few days, I have no internet at home. Does this mean that I cannot stream video from my Mac or iPhone?

Using airplay or home sharing to stream content stored on your device does not require an internet connection, it is done over the local network. The only exception would be iTunes purchases, as they need to ping the server every so often for authorization purposes.

  • Stream from and to a programs STDIO

I think the topic already says what I'm looking for.
How do I 'connect' to a different program already running?!
Its a program that gives out information line by line every so often (normal console application).
I'd like to react to certain lines by feeding it stuff through the standard-in (just like typing into the console).
All I know is that you do it using streams. Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

    Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime();
    Process p = rt.exec("otherprogram.exe");
    PrintWriter pw = new PrintWriter(p.getOutputStream());
    BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(p.getInputStream()));

If you don't want that your sister reads your messages, on your sister's iPod, open Settings > Messages > Send and Receive, and unmark your mail addresses and phone numbers, so she won't be able to read any of your iMessages

  • Can I stream and sync from the same itunes library to one AppleTV?

Can I stream and sync from the same itunes library to one AppleTV?

From what I can tell this is a bug.
A very Frustrating bug. When the take 2 update launched I was streaming movies via "shared movies" from my synched computer without any issues. However after a couple of recent iTunes updates all the "shared" menus stopped appearing and I can no longer stream anything from my main computer.
When I open up my macbook though everything streams fine, all the "shared" menus immediately appear.
Numerous restarts, factory resets and reinstalling the 2.0 software have done nothing to help this issue.
If anyone has any more light on the subject it'd be great to hear. Also I'm not sure which update broke it because I went about a month not using the apple tv.

If you turned off Contacts wouldnt that mean that the Contacts would no longer be backed up to iCloud as well? That would make it a pain when upgrading a phone to not easily pull contacts back down.

  • Is it possible to sync AND stream from the same iTunes library?

    Hi,
I am having trouble in setting up sync AND stream from the same iTunes library.
    Config :
Mac OS - Latest update 5/6/09
    iTunes - Latest update 5/6/09
Apple TV - Latest update 5/6/09
I am able to either sync OR Stream from my iTunes library but not sync AND stream from the same iTunes library
    Let's say i want to sync :
Go to Apple TV > Settings > computer
Add Library (Not shared for Syncing)
Enter passcode in iTunes and select the items to sync
    After sync is complete
You can see photo, music & video in My Photos, My Music & My Videos.
Let's say now my Apple TV is full
So like to stream some other content
    Now
Go to Apple TV > Settings > computer
    Add SHARED Library
Passcode is shown in apple TV but not able to Enter it in iTunes (click to set link is not there next to Apple TV item under devices)
To get that you have to right click the apple tv from the devices and select don't sync.
You will get a message saying that all content in apple TV will get deleted.
If you say yes then only the passcode screen for streaming is presented.
So i am not able to sync AND stream from the same iTunes library.
    Any idea?

    correct
    3. After syncing is complete as per the steps said before, if i have to see a synced content i go to My Movies for streamed content i have to go to Shared Movies?
no... both synced and streamed content show up all together. there is no way to tell what content is synced or streamed when looking at it on the appletv. it is seemless as in there is no difference in how it is presented.
you also need to make sure you are using "custom sync" rather than "automatic sync", as you can't select the "show only synced content" box when using "automatic sync".

  • Sync and stream from the same library?

    Hello,
Prior to upgrading to ATV2, I was able to access 'unchecked' items in my iTunes library from my ATV. This is the iTunes library that I am also syncing from.
This allowed me to stream items that I didn't want to sync.
I would do this by going to the 'sources' option and directly selecting my Mac Based iTunes library, rather than the ATV library.
With the new update, can you still stream unchecked items from the same iTunes library that you are syncing too?
    If so how?
If not, I think this is a major let down???
    Any help much appreciated.
    FH

Depends on what you mean by unchecked.
If you don't check items in the sync options window (from device list) they won't get synced, but they will get streamed provided the item is checked alongside it's title in the main library window. If an item isn't checked alongside it's title in the main library window then it won't sync or stream.
All synced and streamed content from the same library now appears in a single list on the tv, namely 'my movies, my tv shows etc'. Only content from a secondary (streaming only) library will appear in a separate list on the tv, namely 'shared libraries'.

  • Syncing and streaming from different itunes libraries on same computer

First, I came across a thread saying that it is possible to sync and stream from the same itunes library, but Apple technical support says this is not possible and the thread didn't explain how this is done. I know you can still stream music from a library that is synced with the ATV by using Airtunes, but you can't stream movies through Airtunes. If there's a way to sync and stream movies through the ATV from the same itunes library, can someone please let me know how to do it?
If this is not possible, does anyone know if it's possible to sync to one library and stream from another on the same computer? I tried this last night and for a second I thought it worked because my itunes was listed on the ATV twice (once as syncing and the other as streaming) but then when I switched back to the library that the ATV was supposed to be synced with, that library disappeared from the ATV and I lost all of the media on the ATV. (As a side note, when I started syncing again, the ATV showed that it still had all of the media on there, but itunes showed that there was nothing and started copying everything again - very annoying).
This is an issue for me because I only have one computer and all of my media on an external harddrive. I like having my music synced with the ATV but my movies will not fit on the ATV so I would prefer to just stream those rather than have to delete and add movies everytime I want to watch something different. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

missed a very important step necessary to achieve this, in the summary tab in iTunes there is a check box... "show only synced items".. if you uncheck that box then unsynced items will will appear on the appleTV menus and when you click on them they will be streamed... this gives you the sync and stream from the same library part of what the OP wants.
the other part of the puzzle is to let items inside and outside of the iTunes Folder exist in the iTunes library... the library is file that contains all the files that you see in itunes... files don't need to be in the iTunes folder to be in the itunes library though..
the trick here is that when you drag the files from your external (the ones you don't want on your computer) and into iTunes... press option as you drag and the files will be added to the iTunes library (a reference/path to them really) but the files will not be copied to the iTunes folder... when iTunes looks for that file (to play it directly or to stream or sync to appleTV) it looks at the reference and says.. hey i can get this file here (on your external) and goes and fetches it.
on a PC you press SHIFT as you drag into iTunes so the item(s) don't get copied to the iTunes folder.. no OPTION key on PCs.

  • Apple TV: Sync with iMac & stream from PC/Vista?

Happy New Year to all --
I have my main iTunes library on my Mac (box iMac, not portable) upstairs, and I have been syncing that library to my Apple TV downstairs. The syncing occurs, and I can listen to my library through my speakers which are connected to my Apple TV. This is setup fine. The only thing I don't like is that the Apple TV's options for playback are very limited.
I have a subset of my library on my laptop PC (running Vista). As this is portable, I'd sometimes like to stream music from this PC to my remote speakers which are connected to my Apple TV. Then I can use the iTunes interface on the portable to make playlists, plan upcoming songs, etc. on the portable and have the music streamed to the Apple TV and out the speakers. This I cannot get to work consistently.
So, I want to sync to one computer and stream from another. I do not have to do this simultaneously of course, I just want the flexibility that the iTunes interface has to offer, closer to the listening area.
I have tried many, many things. Rarely I can get the PC's iTunes to recognize the Apple TV, but when it does, the streaming is unlistenable (consistent dropouts). Today I haven't been able to get iTunes to even recognize the Apple TV's existence. I have rebooted everything (incl network/router), made sure all SW is up to date, changed channels, made sure PC is looking for the Apple TV, made sure UDP 5353 is open, etc etc. to no avail. My network is 802.11g and the signal is strong everywhere.
I thought this was possible, even desirable, and I also thought that the days of lousy audio streaming was largely over, since video is now being streamed with some success. My network is busy (two tivos, three computers, PS3, Apple TV) but not using a lot of the bandwidth most of the time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

    Multicast rate.
The multicast rate determines the minimum data transfer speed allowable for a transfer to take place, setting a high value may well make a more robust network but it may simply never allow a transfer if this is too high. I have mine set at 2 Mbps (although I can't be sure you have such an option on your router - sorry I thought you were using an airport.
    Channel
I couldn't suggest a channel, it all depends on which channels those around you are using, you'll likely need to try a few options unless you actually know what all the other networks around you are using. Other devices (cordless phones, microwaves etc) can also cause interference.
Is it common to be able to stream to the ATV (i.e. see it in the remote speakers pull down menu at the bottom) but not have it recognized as a device in iTunes (i.e. in the left column)? That's what sometimes happens to me.
I wouldn't actually know, I've never had any problems with networking my tv's, although network requirements for the tv and airtunes are not the same, so I suppose it's entirely possible that airtunes will be available while you are unable to access the tv.
