Minimum safe distance to a Aironet 1242AG

To whom it may concern,
I've been trying to conduct safety studies on RF systems I'm using on a project, one of which is the Cisco Aironet 1242AG. The FCC's OET states that for the 2.45GHz frequency range, an RF exposure of 1mw/(cm^2) is acceptable for non-controlled RF. I ran a few calculations for our Aironet coupled with a high gain antenna (15dBi) and determined the minimum safe distance was 4.2" away from the antenna. However, standard documentation in the Quick Start Guide for the Aironet 1240AG series access point claims the minimum safe distance is 7.9". I'm trying to figure out how that 7.9" figure was arrived at. The high gain antenna in use is omnidirectional with a beam height of + - 8 degrees.
The answer is important to me because we have our antenna mounted near a place where a human could sit. Part of me wonders if 7.9" was arrived at simply because the FCC OET Bulletin 65 Supplement C mentions devices with external omni-antenna being typically mounted 20cm away from where a human could be (pg.19).
Any insight would be great to this.

I think the line "Proper installation of this radio according to the instructions found in this manual will result in user exposure that is substantially below the FCC recommended limits" clarifies the fact that FCC recommended and cisco recommendation is different taking human safety into account.

  • Aironet 1242ag no longer working after software installation

We killed an aironet 1242AG access point - someone installed the LWAPP software and it
either got corrupted or the software itself changes the way the device functions dramatically.  In any
case we want to revert it back to the way it is supposed to be but the web browser interface no longer works and TFTP
doesn't seem to work either - We've tried a factory default reset but that doesn't do anything.
Here's an error we're seeing at boot:

  • Need a Floorstand for a Cisco Aironet 1242AG WAP

Could you please advise us on a good floorstand for a Cisco Aironet 1242AG WAP?
We need to find a floorstand that would provide an effective mounting solution for our Wireless Access Point (Model Cisco Aironet 1242AG, images of the back and front are below). It should be at least 5 ft high (1.5 m) with pins/knobs or something to mount our WAP. Any ideas? Need answer asap.
    Thank you for your help!!

Is the floor stand to do surveys or is it for a permanently mounting ? These normally are mounted to the celing tile.

  • "Busiest Clients" report template on Cisco Prime & Aironet 1242AG

Yesterday I was trying to schedule a "Busiest Clients" report on our Cisco Prime physical appliance (PRIME-NCS-APL-K9, v2.1.0.0.87).
My goal was to monitor the busiest clients on a couple of old Aironet access-points. These APs have been installed in a branch office of our university that rely on 4 Mb/s SHDSL WAN connectivity and, as you might imagine, some saturation occurs when the classrooms are crowded.
Unfortunately, all the reports were empty ... there was only a "No data matches the specified criteria for the report” warning inside.
The Client Statistics task (Administration>Background Tasks) was enabled and I was able to run this report selecting a different floor area ... after a few tries I've discovered that this error occurs only when the old Aironet 1242AG APs are involved. If I select a floor area populated with the newer 1142 and 2602 models, the report template works as intended.
So, is there a way to fill a "Busiest Clients" report with data fetched from our old Aironet 1242AG APs?
Our WLC is a Cisco Wireless Services Module 2 Controller for Cisco Catalyst 6500 (WS-SVC-WISM2-K9).
(Sorry ... my English is a bit rusty)

    Hi,
Kindly try to restart the Dameon manager with the command line of the server
    1> net stop crmdmgtd
and then start the daemon manager --> net start crmdmgtd (wait for atleast 20-25 minutes before login back to LMS and also see if any file do exist at location CSCOps\Objects\dmgtd\ready folder).
Get the output of pdshow after waiting for 20 minutes and stdout.log and stderr.log from CSCOpx\MDC\tomcat\logs.
    Many Thanks,

    Hello,
I am setting up two 15454's in a lab envirement, connected via four OC-3 cards (two cards each box, east and west, probably set up BLSR). With all the dangers of burining out optics, is there a minimum cable distance I need to consider while I do this? Do I need optical attenuators?
    thanks

  • Question on boot image aironet 1242ag

i am trying to change 5 aironet 1242ag's from LAP to autonomous.  i have tftp'ed an image to the device but i am having a problem getting it to load the image,  if someone has a minute to discuss i would very much appreciate it.
I can provide details as needed..  thanks

Converting a Lightweight Access Point Back to Autonomous Mode
You can convert an access point from lightweight mode back to autonomous mode by loading a Cisco IOS Release that supports autonomous mode (Cisco IOS release 12.3(7)JA or earlier). If the access point is associated to a controller, you can use the controller to load the Cisco IOS release. If the access point is not associated to a controller, you can load the Cisco IOS release using TFTP.
Note In some LWAPP deployments, the LWAPP controller resides between the access points and the rest of the network. In this topology, all traffic must cross over the controller before communication with network resources, such as a TFTP server, can occur. When converting back to non-LWAPP IOS with an access point that is no longer using the LWAPP protocol, traffic does not cross over the controller to reach the TFTP server.

You can extend it, but you will have some signal loss depending on the length of cable. These antennas have 'N' connectors and the cable will be fine since it has one female and one male 'N' connector. If this will be mounted outside make sure you use coax seal on the connector.

  • DHCP on Aironet 1242AG

I configured dhcp server on the Aironet 1242AG. There are two SSID's on the Aironet how can I bind this dhcp server to one of the SSID's so all the clients authenticating to this SSID will get their IP from the DHCP server that I configured on the Aironet?

so long as the DHCP scope matches the network you want the client to get DHCP from,it should work. When the client attempts to get DHCP it will do a subnet broadcast looking for the DHCP server, and the AP should respond.

  • Safe distance between two iMacs

How far apart should I keep two iMacs when they are both running? Right now they are set up about a foot apart. Is that a safe distance? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
    iMac G5 iSight 20", iMac G5 17", Powerbook 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hello,
If you are talking about the iMac G5 or any other LCD screen iMac, then you could safely put them right up against each other with no concern at all. They will not interfere with each other, and no harm will result.
Your most important consideration is ventilation. And, the vents on the iMac G5 and Intel iMacs are on the bottom and the back. And, that's the only area you need to be concerned about when it comes to proximity to other computers. As long as you have about about 6 inches behind the computer (preferably a foot or two) and nothing obstructing the bottom vents, then you should be fine.
The more space you have behind the computer, the cooler it will run. If you reduce airspace behind it, then it will tend to run a little hotter because it will not have as much room to dispose of the hot air. Too little space could cause the hot air to build-up behind the machine, and reduce the effectiveness of the cooling system. Generally speaking, 1-foot / 12-inches is more than adequate.
As for putting the machines side by side, the only possible concern I see there is that you would have to move one of them if you wanted to eject a CD from the drive that is near the other computer.
Now, if you were talking about an older CRT iMac (such as the iMac G3), then you would want more space between the machines. CRT monitors produce an electromagnetic field around them. And, when you place two CRT monitors too close together, you can visually see a ghosting effect on them caused by their proximity to the other monitor.
The specific distance varies by CRT monitor. I've had some that could sit about a foot apart with no noticeable effects. And, I've had others that needed about 2 or 3 feet.
    I hope this helps.

  • Is 5x minimum focus distance covering all distances?

In the Shooting Guide three distances are recommended:
    1 x minimum focus distance (32 cm)
    2 x minimum focus distance (64 cm)
    5 x minimum focus distance (160 cm)
I have added the actual distances for my 24-70 mm set-up.
In the lensprofile these distances are interpreted very differently - and most off at the shortest distance (this has been discussed earlier, and I corrected the data in the lcp-file).
When the profile is opened in LC, the focus distance is shown like e.g.: 24mm, f/11, 1,6m, raw.
99% of my images were shot at a focus distance longer than 5 m. Of course I will choose the 1.6m option, because it's the closest, but at the same time the number seems a bit esoteric. I think that >1.6m would be more intuitive. Not all users are making there own profiles.
Question: I guess the profile is much the same at any distance longer than 5 x minimum focus distance?
    Br, Eigil

    Hi Simon,
at a distance of 1.2 m the image of my A1 size target covers about half of the frame width and I can get a good distortion profiles from 9 shots according to the recommendations of the user guide. But this distance is not what I want because I normally take images from landscapes. Increasing the number of shots does not seem to be a good solution for the problem. With a reasonable number one cannot increase the distance to a satisfactory value and I have not seen a proof that the method works well with a very large number of very small images of the target. (Small residual mean errors shown in the profiles are no proof, I got these with apparently wrong profiles) . Therefore I suggest a different method for producing a distortion profile based on two considerations. The first one is that distortion is a property of the lens and its settings, not of the objects before the lens. That is, only the focus setting of the lens is important, not the distance of the target from the lens. The second consideration is that distortion of a good lens in essentially independent of the aperture, otherwise one would get blurred images with open aperture. This means that I can choose any aperture to create a distortion profile which is good for all apertures. Consequently I take 9 shots at a distance of 1.2 m with the focus ring of my lens set to infinity at an F-number of 22. The images are fairly sharp, the ALPC has no problems finding the corners. The result is similar to the one I got with 25 images at a distance of 2 m which is still marginal.
I think, the chromatic aberration profiles obtained for very high F-number are also good for small F-numbers, the vignetting profiles certainly are not. One would not need the complex procedure with many images for creating vignetting profiles, one image of a white uniformely illuminated target taken from any distance should be sufficient. I hope that Adobe will share my opinion and separate the creation of vignetting profiles from the creation of distortion profiles in ALPC. So far I will manually correct vignetting of my few images taken with small F-number.

  • Dynamic VLAN-Assignment from RADIUS with Aironet 1242AG doesn't work properly

    Hello All,
our setting is to assign VLANs dynamically from RADIUS (freeradius) to Clients connected to the 1242 Access-Points with one SSID. We have Firmware
    12.4(10b)JA/JDA on the Aironet 1242.
The clients should be connected to one of three VLANs - one for staff, one for students and one for guests. I use the Web-Interface of
the 1242, because I'm not very familiar with IOS cli.
After assigning the first VLAN to the SSID -> click Accept, assigning the second VLAN to the SSID (overwriting the previous one) -> click Accept,
assigning the third VLAN to SSID (overwriting again) -> click Accept,  the assignment of VLANs works really fine,
(the only thing i change on the page is VLAN, the SSID is set to mandatory WPAv2)
    BUT...
when the 1242 is rebooted (due a building power off or similar) it doesn't work anymore. Clients end up in an endless authentication loop.
After doing the procedure again from above - assigning all VLANs sequently once, it works fine again !  till next reboot...
All VLANs have same encryption, cypher, TKIP+AES CCM. On the Cisco-Site I found a command, which i also tried with no success:
'aaa authorization network default group radius'.
I also tried to save the working config and load it into the 1242 again, this also did not work.
It seems that i'm doing something wrong, but what ?
    Thanks for some help,
    Frank

All you really need to do is make sure the subinterfaces/vlans are created for each VLAN you need, then have radius push down IETF attributes 64, 65, and 81.

  • Interrupting the boot process on an aironet 1242AG AP?

Does anyone know if there's a trick to this?
According to the documentation, I'm supposed to be hitting the Esc key when I see the Loading "flash:/[imagename]" ####### ... line, but this doesn't seem to be working.  I've tried hitting the Esc key a lot during those lines, holding it down, hitting it early, hitting it late, hitting it in the middle, and still no joy.  I'm wanting to hit it with something very heavy and hard about now, but I doubt that'll do anything but cause more problems.  Anyone know what I could be doing wrong here?
I'm trying to break into a handful of malfunctioning 1242AG APs to see if I can get them working, or if they're faulting hardware that's beyond repair.  (So far they're all coming back with: no "IP_ADDR" variable set, so if anyone knows how to set that without breaking out of the boot cycle, that would be helpful too.)

    Matt,
Press and hold MODE. Apply power and continue to hold for about 30 sec. The AP will try to find a TFTP server, but after failing, you should have a rommon-like prompt (if I am recalling correctly).

  • Cisco Aironet 1242AG Setup

Hi,  We have a network on an oil rig offshore using a 1242AG for general internet browsing for those staying on the rig, and it works perfectly.  Now we want to expand this and I have a couple of challanges.
    1. We would like to add multiple access points but these will all have to be cabled back to a central switch due to signals being blocked preventing one access point seeing another, so not guaranteed to be able to link wirelessly from one access point ot the next.  How is this best done, is it possible to setup all access points with the same SSID so users can easily move around and be associated with the best access point, or best to configure as individual access points?
    2. Due to having access points available in living quarters, we want to avoid people leaving laptops constantly connected and using up our expensive satellite bandwidth and impacting on the use of others.  Is it possible with the 1242AG top setup a timeout period, where any connections are automatically disconnected?
This is all quite new to me so any help or comments on the above would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

You have two choices:  Autonomous or Controller-based.  With autonomous, in order for you to "enjoy" roaming, you'd need Cisco WLSE or Wireless LAN Services Engine plus you have to configure and manage each APs.  With controller-based you just configure the controller, convert the APs to LWAP (very easy) and off you go.  You can start investigating if it's financially sound to invest in a 4402 series wireless LAN controller.  If you deploy, say, 10 APs, look for the price of the WLC4402-25 to support up to 25 APs.

Not on the AP or WLC but RADIUS can.

  • Aironet 1242AG duel antenna Workgroup Bridge

I have an Aironet 1242 AG that I have configured as a mobile workgroup bridge. I have noticed when you enable the bridge on Radio0 (G) Radio1 (A) is disabled or cannot be configured as a bride on top. I read it several places in the documentation that it will do this but I haven't seen an explanation as to why. The 1242 is going to be moving throughout a building so if it is possible I need to find a way to configure it so that if Radio0 looses signal it will jump to Radio1 until Radio0 has a good signal again. I can't make any modifications to the stationary broadcasting access points but they are also 1242 access points. If anyone could tell me if this is possible and how to do it or why it is not possible I would be grateful.
    Thanks,
    Matt

Enabling the Hot standby activates both the Radio. But both the Radios will be activated at a time meaning communication happens simultaneously on both the Radios. One Radio will not act a s a backup Radio for the other.

  • Aironet 1242AG Ethernet error

    Hi
Im having an issue with my 1242AG AP that i cant seem to find a solution for.
I was working away configuring RADIUS and it decided to reboot itself, strange enough but then once it started to reload i got the following:
    Reset ethernet port 0...
then nothing. The status lights are:
    Ethernet - RED
    Radio - OFF
Status - Light Blue (near white?)
Ive checked the LED documentation and it say that its an Ethernet error.
My problem is that this is the 2nd one in as many days that has done this and i dont know how to get it going again.
Ive done the manual reset (as per manual)and it just sits there doing nothing aswell, always displays the flashfs[0] text then the reset ethernet port 0... then no further.
Other posts seem to get to the ap> prompt at least to be able to do some sort of config.
Anybody know of anything to get this going??
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Rob

    Hi Steven
Thanks for your reply, the ethernet interface is down, when i connect a cross over cable (tried straight through too)from my laptop to the AP, my laptop says thats its interface is down, so that means that the AP interface is also down as there are no status lights at all and the lappy cant see anything at the far end.
Ive tried the manual reset (holding MODE for 30 sec while powering on, it takes the status light to pink and the radio light to red but still the same, nothing happens except the:
flashfs[0] checks then the RESET ETHERNET PORT 0....
It never comes back saying its reset the interface like most other errors ive found on the forum.
This is the 2nd one thats done this while ive been configuring it? I cant believe that a configuration statement will kill the AP like this?
