Minimum size pictures for book

what is the minimum size of the pictures if you want to show/print it full page in a medium book?
I know of course it depends of how large you want to show the picture, but let's say that you want to be able to play a bit with the size of the picture. Is 350KB enough?
thank you so much!

I ran a test with a series of photos, 8.5 x 11 inches in size at several dpis, 105, 110, 111, 115. The 110 and 105 files gave the low resolution warning on a full page layout. The others didn't. This was after I rechecked the iPhoto preference file and found this:
defaults:
<key>BookWarningImageDPI</key>
<real>110</real>

  • Correct sizing of a picture for printing

    Good day all;
I am a wee bit new at all of this so this question may sound a bit simple.
Is there a correct way to size pictures for printing. This is what I have done.
My camera is set of 6 meg’s which gives me a huge original. I want to take this and print on a 4x6.
I bring up the picture, select print > click on “scale to fit media. This gives me the size of
    5.333 X 4.
I go back to the picture select: Image>Image Size. Under Document size I enter 5.333 in the Width. The height changes to 4
Question, am I doing this correctly
    Thanks All
    Chomp

I looked up the resolutions for the Lumix Dmc-F27. Full resolution is 2816 * 2122 pixels, giving an aspect ratio of 1:1.327. If you want 4 by 6 inch prints (aspect ratio 1:1.5), you should crop so that the long axis is 6 inches. The short axis would then be 4.5241 inches and the resolution would be 469 pixels/inch. If you are sending the image to an injet printer, you would want to crop the short axis to 4 inches. In his Image Sharpening with Adobe PSCS2, Bruce Fraser states that the "native resolution" of HP inkjets is 300 ppi and that of Epsons is 360 ppi. He further states that Epsons can benefit from up to a resolution of 480 ppi and that sending more than 720 ppi to the printer can actually degrade image quality. With your camera, I see no good reason to use less than the native printer resolution unless file size is a concern.
In your situation, it would make sense to crop without resamplilng and send the image to the printer at 469 pixels per inch (assuming that you are using an Epson printer). If you don't mind arbitrary cropping, you could create a Photoshop action to automate the process and you could add suitable sharpening in the process. To simplify things, I would recommend turning off sharpening in the camera.
If you know that you will not need more than 4 by 6 inch prints, I see that the camera has a 1600 x 1200 pixel mode, which would give a 300 ppi 4 x 6 inch print.
If you are having the prints done at Walgreen's or Walmart and do not mind aribitrary cropping, you could likely send the native images to the printer and let the printer handle resampling and cropping. These machines usually print at 300 pixels/inch.

Events are organised strictly on date and time, as read by iPhoto from the Exif data in the Photo. You cannot manually sort.
Create Albums. You can do much more organising with Albums, use Photos from different events, place them as you will. Best of all, Albums use no disk space at all. They simply reference the file on the Hard Disk. So a pic can be 1, 10 or 100 Albums with no wasted disk space whatever.

  • Photo Book - issue with generating full size picture in PDF file

    Need some assistance here.
I have created a photo book that I would like to order. In the middle of the book I have 2 pages that contain a full size picture on each of the pages. When I generate the PDF file one of these two pictures do not generate correctly leaving an incorrectly rendered rectangle in the bottom left hand corner. 80% of the time it is on of the 2 large 8x10 pictures, the other 20% it is the other 8x10 picture. Aperture does indicate the dpi is large enough to support a quality 8x10 photo.
I have exported jpeg files for each of these pictures and there were no problems. I am not sure by I have this problem in creating the PDF. Does any one see a potential issue with the book? When I order the photo book is it done through he PDF file or are the pictures sent in?
Because of the issue I am cautious to order the Photo Book, but would like to do so.
Any thought or feedback? Is this something that will come through as problem with the photo book as well?
    Thanks

    Hi ejg999,
I have a similar problem running 10.5.2/ Aperture 2.0 trial.
My 15800*4700 pixel (19.8mb) panorama was completely screwed up when printing the book to PDF. I did not span the pict over 2 pages as the center part would not be visible in the book's fold. I created 2 full size pages, resized the frames and adjusted their position.
The print just shows hundreds of small squares, some seem ok, some are blue, some are rendered partially. Totally unusable.
The physical memory was not the problem as I had at least 500mb free during the printing operation.
I printed the book twice: same problem. I thought shutting down Aperture would resolve the error. but all my pics were gone. And the Time Machine did not backup while Aperture was running (still a bug). Aaaaaarghhhh.
I managed to restore my work. I will try to create a smaller copy of the panorama and try to print.
BTW, what is the size of your photo creating the problems?
    regards

  • Is there a file size limit of each pic /or total of all pictures for iBook

I am putting together an iPhoto book using pages of several pictures each I have composed in Photoshop. I then import these pages as a jpeg or psd to iPhoto. I am finding the jpegs often do not import (with message explaining, etc) but that the psd documents do import. These are rather large documents because of the several pictures used on each page. I am planning to do 30 double sided full bleed pages and I am concerned the finished book will be refused because the completed book file is to large. Should I be? Another way to put this could be: is there a size limit of each page or the total size of the book that iPhoto will accept for an individual book?

Your best bet would be to make duplicate of your iPhoto Library folder and then open the duplicate and delete all the photos that do not belong to the book. Keep the book in the Source pane however. If you think some photos might be added later then keep them also.
Now the iPhoto Library folder will be small enough to burn to disk (just drag the folder onto a mounted, blank disk and burn via the Finder). That folder can then be copied from the CD to the desktop of the other computer and opened with iPhoto to continue with the fine tuning. I'd rename the library folder to something like "Book Library" before burning to disk. This method is also a great way of preserving the book after you've ordered it in case you want to order a second copy at a later date. I create a special library for all my books for that exact reason. Once ordered and burned, I can reorder the same book later on even if I have a catastrophic drive crash in the meantime.
    Do you Twango?

  • How long should it take to upload pictures for iPhoto books

I have created a book for Christmas on iPhoto.  The book is 100 pages.  There are two steps to the process of sending in your order.
    1.  Assembly (which it assembled no problem, under 30 min)
    2.  Upload (it shows a bar and a blue line moves as it uploads)
I have been uploading for 2 days now and I am 1/4 of the way there.  Now while I am waiting for it to upload I cannot do anything with my iPhoto pictures.  Which is a problem since I take pictures for my school and I need to edit pictures by Tuesday.
It states under the "Uploading book to the store...."  Note: Any interruption of the upload process will cancel your order.
I have enough memory that this should not be the problem.  I have turned off every application, restarted my computer, checked for updates.  Nothing helps.  I have had to cancel this order 3 times now and restart the process as I needed to use iPhoto for school projects.
This should not take more than 2 days!  What is going on?  Any help would be wonderful.  Thank you

Two days is way too long for the upload, unless you are having a very slow Wi-Fi.
There may be a something interfering with your connection to the Print Products Store (Anti virus software, firewalls), or you have included unprintable items.
Is the PDF preview of your book correct? Make a review and check it carefully for missing items, see this help page:
iPhoto, Aperture: Previewing an order in iPhoto or Aperture
If the preview is alright, try to upload your book again in Safe Mode. That will disable non standard extensions, and prevent them from interfering with your connection to the Print Products Store:

  • How do you use your pictures for web, iPad & smartphones? All the same size??

i realy think back and froth about this question.
i guess it makes sense - to use all the same size -  because newest Ipads and Iphones are with retina-screens !??
on the other hand i use background-pictures for the website with a lenght of 1800px (it's 400 kbit) so it may slow down my the mobile version
but i know , people always scroll and zoom into evrything with an Ipad and  smartphone ... So what to do?  What is your hint ?
Thank you for your time ;-))

For me anyways, I 'always' create my images to the size I need and then bring them into what ever web design tool I am using wether it is Muse, Dreamweaver, Coda or a number of others. It takes a few minutes longer but I always get the results I need and expect.

  • Minimum size of SGA for the recovery catalog db ?

I've created a recovery catalog database and by default the total size of the SGA is 180MB. Problem is, there isnt' much memory on development server to run the target and recovery catalog database (catdb).
Would it be possible to startup catdb with an SGA of size 10 MB or so? What's the minimum size? I figured since catdb is only used as for the recovery catalog and would rarely be access or changed, it doesn't need to use that much memory.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi David,
In 10g, the minimal shared_pool_size is 120M, otherwise you will get
ORA-00371: not enough shared pool memory, should be atleast 123232153 bytes
You can set java_pool_size to 0, which is NOT the default.
You could also set the large_pool_size to 0, but I am not sure this is recommended.
In 8.0 shared_pool_size could be as low as 300K. Read your Reference manual for the values specifics to your version

You can even print from iPhoto 8.1.2, see:  Apple Photo Services: Product line details for books, cards, and calendars

    I tried the following code:
            this.getContentPane().setMinimumSize(new Dimension(686,520));
this.setMinimumSize(new Dimension(686,520));but it's still not work... , I can still resize it too small.. any other way ?
    2. How do I set its default size when dialog pop up?

  • Minimum size for an MIAW

Since when is there a minimum stage height for an MIAW?
    I'm using Director MX and I have a movie that's 250 x 35 and
    it always opens
to a height of 70. I set the height from 35 to 60 and it
    opened at 70. I
set it at 72 and it opened at 72.
For now I've made the movie 70 pixels high and moved all
    sprites down 35
then open it 35 pixels higher than where I normally would.
    Since this MIAW
is at the top of my stage, the offstage 35 pixels don't
    matter.

  • Scanning Pictures for HD Project I Need Advice

I am about to *Scan Pictures for HD Project* I Need Advice. The scanner is a HP Scanjet G4050 my questions are:
1: At what resolution do I scan these pictures _+(300 or highest dpi available)+_
2: What color choice is necessary *(RGB vs CMYK)*
3: Can you please suggest points for creating a backdrop for the pictures (various sizes) in the Timeline
    Thanks in advance

Scan the picture like you normally would. If the vertical resolution is 1080, you are fine. Don't worry about the 1280 width as black will be in that area not taken up with the photo. That part won't matter if it isn't 1280 if it is a vertical picture. If you don't have at least 1080 high, you might want to re-scan at a higher resolution. If you have it say, 2000 pixels high really no big deal except you don't need it that high and all that extra size slows down your system. If you want it at a lower resolution after you scan go into Photoshop->Image->Image size. Be sure and check "Constrain Proportions" before you change the dimensions in the top box for the height (where you are best using the units as pixels) That way the picture will stay in proportion. Don't use this second method to 'add' more pixels as the quality suffers when you go up this way. Rescan if you want MORE pixels.
All the above is talking about vertical pictures. If you have a really wide photo that is not very tall, use the same principle but keep the width constant. For example let's say you have a 2x6 inch photo. Make sure the width is at least 1280 pixels. Don't worry that the height will be less than 1080 because black will take up that space.
If you are going to do any zoom in and/or panning across a picture, you'll need to make sure it has more than the minimum pixels. For me a little goes a long way, so I zoom in slowly maybe 10-15%.

  • Customizable layouts for books?

Is it possible to customize page layouts for books in iPhoto? For example -- it drives me crazy that there are layouts with 4 or 6 photos but none with 5. Or, that all the photos in a 8 page layout have to be exactly the same size and that you can't adjust the sizes of pictures in the layouts. Is it possible to create your own layouts for the iPhoto books? Or at least adjust picture size, etc. in the existing layouts?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. No, there are no such themes or layouts. What some do is to create a full page layout in a 3rd party editor like Photoshop Elements that can handle layers and use it on a 1 photo per page layout. However, any frames or special borders won't be easily created.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Still pictures for HD

When I prepare still pictures for HD, should I save them at 72 dpi?

DPI is irrelevant in video world.
What matters are the pixel counts (width and height measured in pixels).
    For DV/NTSC, you need a minimum of 720x 540
For 720, you need a minimum of 1280x720
For 1080, you need a minimum of 1920x1080
You'll want a few more pixels than those sizes if you plan on zooms and/or pans. Just be aware that the maximum still image size FCP will deal with is 4000x4000 pixels but it doesn't do you any good to have a great number more pixels than you need. FCP doesn't have the most elegant scaling engine.
