Minion vs Lucida grande: a unicode (sans) serif problem

Have a book composed in Minion but some references demand Unicode letters (0289) for example.
Fortunately Lucida Grande has the solution but it is sans serif und very invasive.
Could not find it in Adobe Folio a serif font for a best solution neither information in a web search...

You can use the Glyphs panel -- awkwardly, admittedly -- to check if the currently applied font has the glyph you're after. The Glyphs are in Unicode order (which are in hexadecimal, which adds to the fun), and if you hover the mouse over them, a little info window will tell you the unicode of the character under the pointer. If you start by selecting the 0289 Glyph in Lucida Grande, you can go back to the document, change the font of the selected text, go back to the Glyphs panel and see if there's an equivalent Glyph in each of the other fonts you've got, one by one. If there is one, it should appear selected in the Glyph panel.
A quick check shows that there are several sans-serif fonts that have the glyph you want (including Lucida Grande, as you know, and Arial Unicode), but none of the really nice Adobe text fonts that come with Indesign (Garamond Premiere Pro, Minion Pro, Warnock Pro, Chaparral Pro). But Times New Roman does (at least, the version I've got on my Mac).
And while Times New Roman is not a great match for Minion, it's better than Lucida Grande. At least it has serifs. If you can find a better one, do so.
Here's an easy way to fix the missing characters while keeping Minion as your main font. First, set up a character style that specifies the font Times New Roman. Then create a GREP Style in your text paragraph style that applies your new character style to any occurrence of \x{0289}. Each 0289 character will change to Times New Roman throughout the document. Set up a similar GREP style for each other unicode character you have, changing it to a font in which that character exists.

  • Urgent help needed with Lucida Grande

I have to use this font for a project, I can't get away with Lucida sans, it HAS to be Lucida Grande.
I don't quite know what is going on but I have some text in Lucida Grande Regular which is all fine, I tried creating another text box but it's showing up as Lucida Grande Bold? I tried to change it to Regular but there's no option for it? When there is regular font right next to it?
If this is something really simple I'm sorry! This is my first time using indesign, if it was my choice I would of used something I was more familiar with. The deadline is on Friday so it's urgent I get help so it doesn't get presented half bold half not.
    Using CS5, on Windows Vista

Yes that's fine. Unfortunately is doens't show something obviously out of the ordinary.
I gues the next ting is to see if the font is available in a new document. If it is, try this on the one giving you trouble: Remove minor corruption by exporting
If not, you should look at: Replace Your Preferences

  • Photoshop CS5 not working with Lucida Grande Regular font

On my iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz, I am running OS 10.6.7.
When using Photoshop CS5, if I try to use the font, Lucida Grande Regular, it causes an error.
"Could not use the type tool because of a program error."
When I try to open an existing file that has type layers that include the font Lucida Grande Regular, Photoshop will not open the file. I have several of these files that I want to use. I can open them on another Macintosh and everything works fine.
First I get a message window that says, " Some text layers might need to be updated before they can be used for vector based output. Do you want to update these layers now?" I click on update and then get the following message. "Could not complete your request because of a program error."
I have updated Photoshop CS5 to the latest version, 12.0.4.
I have run the FontTest.jsx script and it shows an error for Lucida Grande Regular.
(IOError: General Photoshop error occurred. This functionality may not be available in this version of Photoshop.
    - <no additional information available>)
The other 100+ fonts on my machine did not create errors.
Since Lucida Grande Regular is an essential font for Mac OS X, I re-installed OS 10.6 in order to have a new version of Lucida Grande Regular. After that re-install I am having the same problems with the font not working in Photoshop.
It also does not work with Adobe InDesign CS5. The font does work in Microsoft Word.
The program Font Book verifies Lucida Grande Regular.
Other fonts including, Lucida Grande Bold, work fine in Photoshop and InDesign.
What can I do to get Photoshop CS5 to work with Lucida Grande Regular?

Wow, I'm so glad I found this thread. This problem has been dogging me for years, and it's so sporadic that I've been afraid of breathing the wrong way lest I somehow incur that diabolical Program Error dialog. I'd managed to reach a truce with Photoshop CS5, getting it into a barely working state, and avoiding all updates... until Lion came along today. Then I updated to CS5 12.0.4, and the Program Errors were back again.
Now I see that the problem does seem to be related to the Lucida Grande font. If there's a layer with that font in it, not only can I not edit that text, but I can't marquee select anything, nor drag any shapes. Deleting caches and massaging fonts are completely ineffectual measures... but if I delete the Lucida layers entirely, we're back in business.
    At least so far.
Funny to think that of all the innovations I'd like to see Photoshop adopt, the fixing of this one issue is the thing I'd like to see most. I'll be keeping my eye on this thread, and any updates by Mr. Cox.

  • I need to substitute the default font (times roman) in my editable form fields with a san serif...

I am making a PDF with editable form fields out of InDesign CS6. When I make the interactive PDF, the font, Helvetica Neue  is being substituted with the default font, Times Roman. The client has provided me with last years PDF which has a nice San Serif for the editable fields. I need to change the font either to Helvetica Neue, or at least to a nice San Serif common system font. I have Acrobat X.
    Thanks in advance!!

I called a friend of mine who walked me through this so I will post the instructions for anyone else who may be having this problem...
    1. Open the PDF with the form fields in a recent version of Acrobat.
    2. Click on the Toolls tab.
    3. Under Forms, click Edit.
    4. Now you will see your fields listed under "Field" > "Sort by"...  "Text Field 1"...  etc.
    5. Holding "control" click where it says "Text Field 1" and some options will pop up.
    6. Click on "Properties".
    7. A "Text Fields Properties" window will pop up.
    8. Click on the "Appearance" tab.
    9. Here you can change your fonts and font sizes.
    Good luck!

  • Horizontal menu bar shows serif type font in Live View and Preview but sans serif is in css file

Help I am using the Spry horizontal menu bar and while it is working fine, it is showing a serif font in Live View and in all Browsers even though I have selected a sans serif font. What gives? I have attached the SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css

Add this to your embedded styles:
    body {
        background-color: #999;
    font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
using, of course, the font list you want.
All those styles that rely on the 'default' font will now default to the Trebuchet font list (or to your chosen list).

  • Lucida Grande Font Not Displaying in DW correctly

    Hi all,
I am having problems with specifying "Lucida Grande" font in DW CS6 (Mac). This only happens in CS6 not CS4. Wonder if anyone else has similar problems?
Below is how it appears in Dreamweaver CS6
    Page displays perfectly in CS4.
I have taken out Lucida Grande font from my style sheets and it displays correctly, which is how I know it has something to do with the font.
Thank you for any help in advance!

Many people do not have your font on their system so they
    won't see it.

  • How can I get the TOC to display ALWAYS in a Sans-Serif Font in Linux/Firefox.

I've created my help project in RH9.  When it displays in Linux/Firefox, the fonts in the topics are fine, but the TOC displays in Times New Roman.  Is there a setting in RH9 that I need to use to keep this from happening?

    Hi,
Did you change the setting in the skin? What font have you set for the TOC? Perhaps you set a font that is not available on linux so make sure that you use a web safe font.  For more information on web safe fonts, see http://www.w3schools.com/cssref/css_websafe_fonts.asp
You can also tinker with your output files. In whthost.js, you can amend the CSS that RoboHelp uses for the TOC. you can add a rule for a sans-serif font the browser can fall back on. See http://www.wvanweelden.eu/webhelp_output_files/whthostjs for more information on the whthost.js file.

  • MS sans serif font in Power Point

Does anyone know if there is a font for Mac that is same or equivalent to MS sans serif in windows. I compose in Mac but often present in Windows and would like to avoid fixing fonts that don't appear in Windows.

What about using Microsoft Sans Serif? It is included in Mac OS X 10.5.

  • IBooks Export Warning: iOS doesn't support the font "Lucida Grande."

Why am I getting this warning?  I have checked my iBook and I have not used this font.
    "Lucida Grande"

Have you pasted in text from another document?
IF so it may help to know..... if it was in the miscreant font, although you see letters, the code that produced the original document .. When pasted ..can still hold snips of data relevant to the font but unused by iBA.
iBA reports on not the content you see, but what its found in the data/coding.   If you preview or export and open in iBooks, I doubt you will find any corrupt or missing text.

  • "sans-serif" font assignment in CSS not happy in Safari

    http://www.dandreaco.com/safari.jpg
    http://www.dandreaco.com/firefox.jpg
The Safari is the bad one; the Firefox is the way the page SHOULD look. I have been having this problem now for about 8 weeks, but I cannot pinpoint where it came from as the update to Safari and the installation of the new MS Office 2008 ran consecutively. Regardless, now any style sheet that just has "sans-serif" with NOTHING else as a font assignment shows up this way. It looks like it may just be a character encoding issue, because Safari does not have Western IS0-8859-1. I assumed Western ISO Latin-1 was the same, but I don't think that's true because I have seen many negative posts relating to Western ISO Latin-1 on developer sites all over the net. I chose Roman and it doesn't fix it, btw. Any clues???? This is going to force me to bag Safari till they fix this problem.

There was a "problem" font. I don't even know how I got it, but it's kind of like a "font virus." Because everything is set up for "Helvetica" this particular font, "Helvetica in a Hamper" uses all the correct font naming, family, etc., coding and in so doing, weasels its way into becoming your only Helvetica font. "M" and "N" are in reverse order, as are lower case "m" and "n" and "a" and "b" with "o" and "p", i.e., opcdefghijklnmabqrstuvwxyz.

  • Weird rectangular box replaced the white-space for san serif

I opened up a pdf that used to have a normal san serif text, but now, it has little square boxes for every spacebar spaces. The text comes out good but it's the white spaces that come up in square characters. Most other fonts don't do this but some other ones do this as well. Here is a picture of it:
    http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss186/johnclee90/1212.jpg
    please help me.

I meant to say InDesign and not pdf. The pdf output of the indesign long ago does not have any square boxes but if I try to export the same indesign into pdf, it has the square things showing up on the pdf as well.  Anyways, the sansserif might have already existed, but my actual use of the sanserif came along with an already made CS2 template (I have CS3)from my instructor which was using the font. Everything was fine and normal (as in no square boxes) until recently when I opened the file again.
I checked the font folders in my windows system, and it has SansSerif, SansSerif Bold, SansSerif Bold Oblique, and SansSerif Oblique in truetype font just like any other font files in there.
Also this is the original CS2 template that I work on from. When I first opened this a while ago, it didn't have the weird boxes.

  • Sans, serif, monospace and newspaper fonts are overridden by ZawgyiOne

I installed ZawgyiOne2008.ttf font in the ~/.fonts dir.
ZawgyiOne2008.ttf is Myanmar (Burma) character font.
It override Sans, Serif, Monospace and Newspaper fonts in my Arch+ratpoison.
If I remove that ZawgyiOne2008.ttf and run fc-cache -vf , then fonts back to normal.
How can I get it back to normal with ZawgyiOne2008.ttf installed.
I read Font Configuration page in Arch Wiki and follow some instructions.
But end up in same problem.

sounds to me like the problem is inside the font itself.
grab fontforge and edit the font's properties.

  • Font mapping: 'Sans Serif' and 'Serif'

    Hi,
I've got a trouble with my 'Sans' and 'Sans Serif' fonts (aliases?): they are mapped to one and the same undesirable Serif font. I've done some research, but still haven't got past vague suspicions.
Something in /etc/fonts/conf.d, no? BTW, this directory is empty, in my case.
    I did this, experimentally:
    $ sudo ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/49-sansserif.conf 49-sansserif.conf
    $ fc-cache -fv
Nothing changed. What's the correct approach to the problem?

  • Setting sans-serif font in TextFormat?

Is there a way to set a generic sans-serif device font when setting the font property of the TextFormat?
Or does the font property have to be a specific font name?
For example, it would be nice to set the font property similar to how you set the font family within a stylesheet: i.e.
    "Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"
Instead it appears that you can only set an actual name of a font (i.e. "Arial") and if the user's computer does not have that particular font, then the font face is set to Times New Roman.
Please let me know if there is a way to set a generic font family rather than setting a specific single font family.
    thanks in advance!

  • MS Sans Serif font missing

I receive a regular club bulletin which is in MS Sans Serif.
When I open it with Pages I get a warning that MS Sans Serif is missing, and I replace it with Microsoft Sans Serif.
But, neither before or after replacing it, is the pagination as the author intended. It is not the same as when opened in LibreOffice for example.
Is there any way I can download MS Sans Serif and have Pages use it?
Or any other way round this problem for Pages? or do I have to use LibreOffice
    Thanks

    fruhulda wrote:
It might or might not get the pagination wrong. It depends on which features used when creating the document.
My strong view is that the Sender has the obligation to make sure everyone who he/she wants to read the bulletin, should use a format or supply with alternatives, to make sure it can be read. The reader shouldn't be the one to adjust to the senders restricted view on which  format or font to use. You have to ask for a pdf version at least. You can open in Preview, PC user have to get Adobe reader but they usually already have it on their computers.
I can't see it a a defeat on your part. Maybe I can see it on the senders part thoguh.
You are right of course, in this day and age PDFs and Adobe Reader should be the norm.
But this is a voluntary organisation where a lot of work is done unpaid by a few people. Neither the sender nor the members are particularly computer literate. I don't feel it is appropriate to tell them about their obligations!
I call it a defeat because my Macs can't handle such a document without third party software or requesting the sender to do something which all the Windows members don't need. This is the kind of problem which helps put people off Macs.
However, you said that there is a possibility that Pages would get the pagination right if it had the correct font, so can I ask again if it is possible to download MS Sans Serif? There are other Microsoft fonts in OSX, so why not this one? I have googled for it without success.
It isn't a big deal to use LibreOffice, but my tidy mind would like Pages to handle it if possible.
    Thanks for helping
