Minor Video Stutter

Just connected the new ATV(2), and watched a few free TV shows...I'm noticing some slight playback stutter (video only) - seems more like an encoding issue than streaming - wired connection, and had no pauses or audio stutters.
It presents sort of like dropped or missing video frames...Curious if any others are noticing this. I'm watching on a projection system (missing the 1080!) so perhaps this issue is exaggerated for me, but it's clearly there...

I'm seeing some stuttering as well. Every few minutes the picture will just skip (a few dropped frames). No problem with the audio. This is happening on purchased itunes video (HD) and on handbrake encoded video Atv v1 settings. The server is gigabit backbone to wireless N to the atv. Stuttering happens when the progress bar shows a full buffer (IE the video is fully cached). Standard HDMI out to the sharp 720p tv.
The old aTV played these videos without a single skip.
This is worrying - the one thing I assumed they would have ironed out was any video/audio glitches due to network/AppleTV hardware performance issues that affected many with generation 1 devices. It's really a black mark for a media device not to play video perfectly without dropping frames etc
It's pretty insidious, you don't notice it until you do and then you can't stop noticing -- it's really a downer.
I bet
Best guess to the problem: While the video is playing the atv v2 is getting an updated playlist from the itunes server. My library is very large, 1.5tb purchased itunes videos, over 5k mp3s, 5g of pictures, and another tb of ripped home movies, handbrake encoded to atv v1 settings.
That may be the case or it's buffering ahead enough but something else is sleeping and not waking quickly and causing a pause until the stream resumes.
Anyway it's pretty distracting.
Ys, and not one you can troubleshoot synced vs streamed on new unit.
Other annoyances with atv v2:
* Can't log into a netflix account using a gmail address that contains a + (used to alias email addresses)
Suspect that's a simple fix.
* [HD] doesn't show beside HD video anymore.
Conflicting reports on that. The logo irritated me to be honest.
* Movies can no longer be subgrouped by setting show and episode id4 data (So you can't group all your James Bond movies together).
I tended to use genres almost exclusively rather than this but a real retrograde step for those who did.
* TV shows are no longer subgroupped by show, each season is displayed in the master list.
So insetad of say Lost a sa top heading and seasons listed nested within that, I assume you get a top level entry for every season of Lost - is that correct?
I really really hope it's at the very least grouping by season and not showing every individual episode in the top level!
What happens if you use Get Info to change all episodes say to Season 1? - if episode numbers were then set to say 101-106, 201-206, 301-306 etc it might be a workaround to tidy things up.
* My local movie and tv list is no longer grouped under movie and tv on the master menu.
Of course not. My biggest complaint with AppleTV Software 2 on generation 1 devices was it was far too iTunes store centric with your own content relegated to the bottom of commercial menus. Software 3.0+ was near perfect especially if you disabled the store.
Now with AppleTV 2.0 the marketing boffins have clearly decided that iTunes Store rental is the primary reason anyone would/should buy the device to generate iTMS revenue, so yet again your stuff, paid for or home video, is relegated to a submenu - at least that seems to have a FrontRow/AppleTV 1 software 1 simplicity.

  • HD clips have video stutter after import

New problem with Sony HDR-SR5 import:
2 of 10 clips from recent vacation have video stutter/jerkiness upon import. All other clips are fine. The two clips that stutter in iMovie 08 play fine on the videocamera. I have never seen this before. I have reimported the abnormal clips, but no change. The audio is okay; it is just the video Any ideas?
    Mark

*How comforting* ( for me alas ) to find I'm not alone with this problem.
    Config: iMac-Intel - 2,16MHz, 1Go RAM, 320Go internal drive, 500Go USB external drive, OS-X 10,4,11 ( Tiger ) IMovie 7,1,1, SONY HDR-SR5E
My first few imports worked fine, then Imovie started to quit and 2 other movie sequences were corrupted ( stuttering image ) no matter how long they lasted or which HDD I decided to store them to.
Apparently other posters have signaled this to Apple, but that unfortunately does not help us getting on with our respective work.
It would seem there are only 2 solutions while we wait -
FCE = hand in wallet, or
Just copy the files from the SONY directly to a HDD location and wait for the Imovie issue to be solved.
Maybe unplug my Firewire Presonus Firebox ?????
All futher comments and possible work-arounds welcome naturally.

  • FCP video stutter

I am running FCP 6.0.6 on my MacBook Pro (2.53 GHz Intel Core i5, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3) and saving all my projects on an external hard drive. I've tried to search for this problem but haven't been able to locate a solution:
I am getting video stutter on both my external monitor as well as my viewer window in FinalCut. The external monitor stutters when I play from the time line, but the canvas window looks fine. I tried trashing my preferences but the problem remains. What else can I try?
I also can't update from Apple as I do not have my serial number.
    Thanks for any help.
    -Patrick

You don't give any details about your video format or sequence settings etc. so you could be using something completely inappropriate.
Have you trashed all the prefs completely? http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
Does the problem appear in your final output . . . . DVDs, the web etc.? If not it does not really matter.

  • 720P 30 H.264 videos stutter when played back on Windows

720P 30 H.264 videos stutter when played back on Windows
I have an interesting problem that I am hoping someone can help me with.
I have several short videos (2-4 minutes) in 1080i HDV that I have edited in FCP. When output to 720P 30 H.264 in Compressor at either 10 or 6 MB they look just drop dead gorgeous when played back on either of my dual processor Macs.
However when played back on a Windows machine with QuickTime 7, they stutter to the point that playback locks up. This happens on 1.5 GHz to 3.2 GHz P4 class machines with 512 MB to 1 GB of RAM and 64 to 128 MB video cards. On the 3.2 GHz P4, the processor utilization peaks at 100%. The interesting thing is that all of these same Windows machines have no problem playing back 720p 24 trailers at 6 MB.
    Thanks all.

First a correction. I am using the latest version of FCP – 5.
Regarding the encoding, I have tried going from native HDV MPEG-2 to H.264 at 720P from 10 to 4 MB at 24, 30 and 29.97. The Mac seems to play everything back very well, but most PCs (the latest IBM T 40 – 43 series laptops) a couple of Dell desk tops (2.6 GHZ with 64 and 128 MB graphic cards) and a 3.2 GHz Shuttle PC with a 128 MB graphic card (that we routinely use to decode four MPEG-4, 4CIF images simultaneously and display on a 42” ED Plasma) choke/stutter to varying degrees with processor utilization hitting 100%.
So, the real issue here is what is the difference between a 720p trailer that I can download from Apple and what I can output using Compressor 2 at a similar data rate – other than the frame rate?
And why does the Compressor output stutter on most PCs?

  • Mplayer2 pause+unpause makes video stutter when VDPAU is on

    Hi there,
since the beginning of the week, mplayer2 is behaving strangely: pausing for some seconds (3-4) then unpausing will make the video stutter horribly (while audio is still fine).
Same with any mplayer2 or mpv version. mplayer1 is fine.
I could figure something out: mplayer1 defaults to GL video output, whereas mplayer2 / mpv will default to VDPAU. Switching to any other VO driver than VDPAU works fin indeed. However using vdpau with mplayer1 works fine. But perhaps mplayer1 tells it is using vdpau but cannot, so it falls back to using gl without telling.
I'm using radeon, and mesa got updated a few days ago to version 9.1.4. I've been experimenting this issue since then. I do not know if mplayer2 was using vdpau automatically before. If I have some time I'll test with 9.1.3 to see what VO mplayer[12] use.
    As a temporary fix I've set 'vo=gl' to ~/.mplayer/config.
Has anyone the same issue with another video driver? Have you tested with mesa 9.1.3?
This could help deciding who is to blame here.

I did test it with Mesa 9.1.3, and mplayer2 still defaults to vdpau. The unpause issue persists.
Maybe I'm missing something here, but it seems like Mesa did not trigger the change. I'm wondering what update changed mplayer behaviour during the last 2 weeks.

  • Video stutter and artifacting -TM700k video imported using rewrap2m2v

    Guys,
I imported a video shot in TM700 to my iMac late 2006 model running snow leopard, using the Automator tool of Alan Somersault -rewrap. While playing the resultant movie .m4v file I am getting a lot of video stutter and artifacting and the movie also quit couple of times while playing.
    Any suggestions on resolving this?
    Thanks

The movist application actually drops frames during playback to avoid the stutter you've described.
This of course is good for preview. The only other way (within consumer segment) is to get a computer which support hardware accelerated playback, i.e. a later Mac models. However, as hardware acceleration is early, stutter still occurs for some applications but that will improve over time.
If you want to go the free route, use Rewrap2M4V to rewrap the video files to a more friendly format and then use MPEG Streamclip to actually convert the video to a less compressed format.
If you want an "all-in-one" solution, try VoltaicHD for ClipWrap.

  • Video stutter - mini vs macbook - not audio related?

Hi everyone - I've posted a couple of times now but for background, I am a new Mac/iMovie user and have just returned from an extended vacations where I created several projects using a Canon HV-10 for HD video. My projects play fine (for the most part) on my new MacBook (2.0 Gig processor) although I have experienced a limited number of video stutter issues. I've read the previous discussion threads but I dont think (?) they apply in my case as one of my projects doesnt have any "added" audio clips, and the other projects only have 2 or 3 songs added to the soundtrack. The videos still seem to "catch" or hesitate at specific clips but they dont do it all the time. More importantly, I just returned home and have attempted to play the projects on my mini (minimum configuration) and it both hangs up and when it does play, the frame rate is noticably slower than on the MacBook. I guess my question is, is there a fix for each of these cases? Also - if the Mini issue is insufficient hardware, is it likely the processor speed or can it be fixed or improved by just adding RAM? Thanks for your help.
    Scott
mac mini, macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If the stutter you see is related to the audio, it can be caused by 1) the number of audio clips; or 2) the songs added to the project. Even one or two songs can cause a problem, if they are the right (wrong) songs.
See this topic, which describes how to fix the songs:

  • Slight video stutter with Vudu on 46WX800U

I have an issue with slight video stutter when streaming video from Vudu. Signal strength is strong when using Wifi or Lan cable. Streaming from Netflix is just fine, but when streaming from Vudu there is a slight stutter when streaming any video. Is anyone experiencing this with their TV set?

  • Temporary video stutter in games, mid 2009 MBP

    Hi all,
I've been having a chronic issue with my mid-2009 MBP with 256MB NVIDIA 9400M, only noticeable when playing games.  Starting a few minutes after I start playing a game, the video will stutter in regular, discrete chunks. It will run fine for about a second, then lag horribly for a second, and alternate between these two.  This is especially noticeable with graphics-intense games such as Starcraft 2, but happens even for certain less demanding games too.
The funny thing is that the issue goes away after 15-20 minutes of play or so.  After that, no matter how long I play for (for periods up to several hours), the issue does not return.  This makes me think it must be some sort of software or driver issue, and thus hopefully fixable.  On the other hand, it happens both in OSX and Win 7 under Bootcamp.
One thing is that I have upgraded the RAM and installed a new hard drive; maybe these are causing problems?  I don't remember if this issue predates the new hardware.
Anyone have any thoughts?  I've poked around a bit and haven't seen anyone report this exact same issue.
    My specs are:
    MacBook Pro
    13-inch, Mid 2009
Processor  2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
EDIT: found this post with what seems to be the same issue: https://discussions.apple.com/message/15530456#15530456

Perhaps you could try this to resolve your issue: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If the issue still persists, I would contact AppleCare, or may an appointment at the Genius Bar. There may be diagnostics they can run to determine if you have a failing logic board or GPU.

  • Video stutter with iTunes movies - how to fix?

I just downloaded some movies from iTunes for the first time in both HD and standard format but none of them will play stutter free. I have these horizontal lines going through the image like the frame is slowly building itself up. Sometimes the whole frame will even freeze and then fast forward to catch up with the audio.
I never had this problem with any other HD video on my computer before. Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks!

  • IPhone 4 videos stutter

When I share the iP 4 videos to iTunes (960 x 540 setting) they stutter slightly. As if there is some problem with the frame rate. It is most notable in panning. There is no such stutter when I view the original clip.
IP 4 videos are 30 fps. I live in a PAL country where the frame rate is 25 fps. I wonder if that has got something to do with the problem. Though in iM I have tried both the NTSC and PAL settings and get stutter with both settings.

On the MobileMe there's a Help chat, that will get you live assistance for issues with MM. As far as I know these videos are compatible.

  • Video Stutter during editing

I am using elements 8 with a windows 7 64 machine. I just installed a new video card an XFX radeon hd6870. When I am editing my vidoe I get a real bad stutter. I then posted the vide on utube abd still had the stutter on my maching but not when I viewd it on my ipad.
Led me to believe it was the vide card so I replaced it with the new XFX. Still same issue. Any suggestions?

Can you give us the full specs. of your Source Footage, your Project's Preseto and also your computer, please?
It is very likely that the cause will be in those details.
    Thanks, and good luck,

  • Video Stutter while importing.

When I import video from a camera, I get this little stutter/pause every so often. It seems like whenever there is fast movement on the video it happens. I recently upgraded to Leopard. I installed over the top of 10.4.9. I'm not sure if this is why it's happening. Has anyone else experienced this?

    Hi
    My first thoughts.
    • Free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk less than 25GB (much less than)
    • More than 50 audio clips - Medicine. Mix audio down to one clip
    • Use of external hard disk - USB/USB2 and may be wrongly formatted
Lot's of video-clips - is not the origin - I've had movie projects up to and more of 6 hours
(Copied back to VHS-tapes - No stutter) (Maraton Vacation movies - nobody can stand to view)
    (Ponder why)
    Yours Bengt W

  • System-wide video stutter problem

When I start a video chat with anyone it works well until some point when the computer begins to stutter as well as the video and audio from the video chat to the point that the computer becomes almost unusable. Once I close the video chat the computer comes back to normal. If I don't close the chat window then sometime later the green light on the iSight stops glowing and my side of the video on the chat gets stuck. At this point I can still see and listen to the other party and they can listen to me.
Other times this "bug" or whatever it may be called happens earlier in during the chat by having the video chat at the sime time as watching a video on Safari (youtube or any flash content). When this happens, both the iChat video and the Safari video start to stutter.
This has also happened while playing WoW.
I have tried reinstalling OS X 10.5 and it just comes back to haunt me.
    Thanks for your help

I just reinstalled OS X 10.5 and still have the same problem. I would say it gets worse and worse. Last thing that happened was I was playing World of Warcraft and the computer just started to stutter, mouse, video, sound, everything an then it shut down. After reboot i got this error report:
