Minor Water Damage

The trackpad on my phone is working, but often only when I hold down alt, and when im on the bbm menu I cannot scroll onto specific chats. So, i found out I must have had water damage but I have not done anything serious to it - hence why the water indicators on my blackberry and on the battery are still completely white. So is there anything i can do to fix the tracker pad? Or do I still have to leave it to dry for a few days?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There is also a possibility that the board that contains the power port was affected by the spill.
It would have been better to have allowed the MBP to dry for a minimum of 72 hours before putting power to it. It's still possible that the board still has some moisture on it which is causing it to malfunction. It's possible that once the board has fully dried out, it will work again. If not, it will need to be replaced.
Water is generally the least harmful spill because it does not contain acids or sugars.
To test the charger, simply try one that is known to be good. Or test yours on another Mac. I imagine that the charger is OK, but if the tip got wet, it needs to dry thoroughly.
Look in the System Profiler and see what it has to say about the health of your battery. If it says normal, the battery is likely OK.
It sounds like there hasn't been enough time for anything to actually corrode, but lingering moisture could be causing your problems.
Good luck!

  • IPod Touch with minor water damage

    Hi all,
I was at the beach on a typical windy day in England, I was walking on the pier when a wave crashes over on to the pier and get my jeans wet. My iPod Touch was in my pocket and it wasn't even submerged. So I got back (I'm in a hotel so bag of rice trick) and half the touch screen was unreasonsive. I left it near by a warm place for 2 hours and I tried again, the second half worked tempremental. So I went to asleep thinking maybe the water would have gone over noght. It hadn't, it's even worse. The lockbutton works only maybe 20% of the time  and also it does things on it's on accord like poer to switch off, locks by itself etc. Its a second gen, I'm going to be back home this afternoon, so is it too late to do the water in the bag trick or should I just pay £130 for a 4th gen.
    Thanks

I would opt for the replacement. Seawater causes corrosion of like switch contacts and the dock connector and causes other damage that drying will not fix.

  • I have a water damage iPhone 5s would like to change to new set with top up the money. But the staff told me it couldn't be done due to some of my minor parts are missing according to company policy. I need advise as I want to change it.

    Hi all,
I have a water damage iPhone 5s was bring to service center to have new set change with top up the money. Well, the staff were told me that the phone can't be change due to some of minor parts are missing in the phone. He said this is due to company policy. I would like to check is that nothing can do with this missing minor parts? I really doubt the policy of the Apple as I was told as long as you bring to the service center, they will assists. As Apple is a well known brand top of the world, but the servicing is really make me so disappointed! I really doubt should I still continue to support the Apple product with helpless service!
Would like to take this opportunity to seek the professional advise in order to get my phone change back.
    Appreciate very much!
    Thanks.

Well, your service is handled by an Authorized Apple Service Center. If they refuse to handle the claim, that is well within their rights. Apple as well could void a claim under the same circumstances. I'm not saying that you did or did not modify the device, but you could try and talk to a supervisor there and make another request. You can also try and contact Apple by obtaining a number with this support document and describe your problem. http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

  • Can water damage take days to show effects?

Long story short, my water bottle leaked and splashed slightly onto my friends MBP. We wiped it off immediatly, flipped it upside down and NO water came out of the keys. Not even a drop. The compter worked perfectly normal for almost two days after that. Then, apparantly it decided to not turn on. It gets stuck at the loading screen each time it is turned on. My friend insists this is from the water damage and wants me to replace it, but could it really take TWO days for water damage to take affect? Thanks!

Absolutely 100% yes is the answer to that
I used to repair laptops, and usually after a very mild spill its almost clockwork between 4day to 10days max MOST will exibit minor to horrible damage.
Contact Apple for full in shop inspection and repair.

Actually the keyboard acts like a one-way valve in liquid spills,....it goes in, but upside down it does NOT come out, this is a fact

  • MINOR water spill, volume trouble...

Today I was sitting on my couch with my Macbook on my lap when my dog jumped on me and, somewhere in the process of catching my laptop, the water I had put on the arm of the couch spilled onto my keyboard. It wasn't a lot and it was in drops; I'm not even sure that anything really got into the keyboard. Everything was working fine, or so I thought, until I realized that the volume isn't working. I can still use the volume keys, but no sound comes out at all when I try to listen to music or move the volume setting up and down. I thought I was doomed, but when I restarted my Mac, this sound (I guess it's the restart sound? It's the first time I've paid attention) came out of it.
So should I just wait it off, or will I have to take it to the Apple Store ? And, if I do, will either my warranty or Apple Care help??
    Thanks in advance

There is no such thing as a 'minor' water spill.  A few drops of water in the right place under the right circumstances may be that death knell for a MBP.  I urge you not to use it, open it up and let it dry.  Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and have them check it.  The warranty will not cover any damage that may have occurred since it cannot be construed as a manufacturing defect.
    Hope for the best.
    Ciao.

  • My girlfriend's macbook pro got water damage, but her Skype seems to be active..

My girlfriend's Macbook Pro 13'  got water damage and seems to have made her computer unusable, this happened three days agol. Since then she decided to not try using her computer to avoid ruining it further. But recently her Skype has been online and is even callable sometimes. Is this an indication of good news? What does this mean?

Liquid spills, why your MacBook chassis is a one-way valve for spills
After a substantial spill many people will turn their notebook upside down and shake it, not only does this not work, but it spreads liquid havoc throughout your machine and makes things often as bad as possible.
The keyboard itself acts like a one way valve in the case of a substantial liquid spill. While liquid pours into the bottom chassis easy, it does not come out easily at all, and in the case of any spill, most of it will not come out by turning it upside down. Disconnect all power and contact Apple for diagnostics and repair.
Do not attempt to, after a spill, ‘dry out your MacBook’ and test it
After a spill most people invariably try to “dry out” their notebook by various methods, including hair dryers and otherwise. This both does not work, and after a substantial spill of any magnitude, even if the liquid was water, residue is left behind.
There are additionally many very tight places inside your notebook where liquids will linger for a very long time, and cause corrosion or worse.
Immediately unplug your notebook and contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and parts replacement.
In the case of very minor spills people will “dry out” their notebook and feel success that their notebook is working ok, however invariably in nearly all instances after 4-14 days an error / fault pops up and is usually followed by more.
In case of a spill, damage estimates are impossible,.....anything can be fixed, without question.......the question is cost.
contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and cost estimation ....possible parts replacement.

My 1-year ipod nano locked up and would not start overnight. The on/off button will not work and stopped holding charge. No water damage, no fall, nothing unusual. I restored it (twice) but it will still not hold charge and on/off does not work. I tried to restore it again and charged it in three different locations with different cables. etc but nothing. Suggestions?

    - After charging for 1/2 hour or so, does iTunes see the iPod?  If yes, restore the iPod from backup.
    - If no, se if placing the iPod in recovery mode will make it visible so you can restore the iPod.  For recovery mode see:

  • Please help!! Computer dummy + water damage

I know this is a very common, probably annoying, question asked in Apple forums but I can't find a recently updated discussion page to post this on. My Google searches aren't really coming up with a specific answer, just pages of forums from 2005-2008. I didn't see any with recent dates, and I really need someone to give advice asap. I am in graduate school and desperately need to get my computer running again or at the VERY least find out if the hard drive is still functional so I can access my important files and transfer them to a new computer.
My Macbook was sitting on my bed, closed and unplugged. I am normally very careful with my Macbook, and I thought my Nalgene water bottle was tightly closed (it wasn't) and a safe distance from my laptop (wrong again). Since water bottles don't fly, I assume my cat knocked my water bottle off the bedside table and onto the bed....more specifically, onto my Macbook. I was in the bathroom getting ready for bed when this occurred. I came out of the bathroom to find a large puddle on the bed and an empty water bottle nearby. And just my luck, the Macbook was right in the middle of the puddle. It was about 15 ounces of water. The area surrounding the computer was soaked through the bedspread, all the way down to the sheets. I'm guessing the water was on the laptop for about 3-5 minutes while I was out of the room.
Here is what I did upon finding this disaster:
    1) I immediately moved the Macbook to a dry area, and used a dry towel to blot up what I thought was all of the water. Some water had even gotten to the keyboard/screen, even though the laptop was closed.
    2) I was not thinking straight and I know nothing about internal workings of laptops, so I performed the panicky knee-jerk reaction.... "ok, I got most of the water, I should check see if it still works" and tried to turn it on. I realize now that was a dumb move, and I am very angry with myself. But anyway, it began to start up normally, but right after making the Apple noise that it usually makes upon restarting, it faded to a blue screen with the apple logo for a second, then went black. I know this is bad, but I didn't heard any abnormal noises like something was being fried, it just shut off.
    3) I removed the plastic Incase protective shell. Note to self: it is not watertight. Some water was trapped underneath the shell, but I didn't realize how much had gone inside the computer yet.
    4) I dried off the top and bottom of the laptop
    5) I removed the battery. Water came dripping out. Sad times.
    6) With another dry towel, I blotted everywhere I could to soak up as much water as possible, and placed the laptop on a towel on a desk in an upside down V shape. The battery is next to it.
This all happened at 11pm on 2/2/2010. The Macbook has been sitting in the same position ever since, in a low-humidity room with an overhead fan. I do not have Apple Care but I know water damage isn't covered anyway. I've also read that Apple charges anywhere from $700-900 to repair water damage, so I might as well buy a new laptop if this damage is irreparable. Given my situation, my questions are:
    1) How much longer should I wait before trying to turn it back on? It has been almost 48 hours.
    2) Can anyone give me any advice (other than "be more careful next time") for what to do next? Does putting the laptop in a sealed box full of rice really help get the moisture out? How about a hair dryer?
    3) Should I follow the instructions on ifixit.com to take the computer apart to allow for more evaporation? Because if it is strongly recommended that I do this, I can have my fiance (who is very good with computers) do it for me....but I am very worried that taking it apart will damage it even further.
    3) If all else fails and the logic board is fried, can I still remove the hard drive and get my files off of it?
Any responses will be greatly appreciated.

hey, sorry to hear about your computer.
i'll try to answer your questions, so here goes:
    1. you could try again to turn on the computer, but the only issue is that the parts of the computer are already fried and might not work. you could try though, it can't hurt to try. also, when doing this listen for beeps coming from the computer. if that happens, i can send a list of beep codes that might narrow down what might have been damaged.
    2. i have heard that rice does work since it absorbs a lot of moisture. i've never (thankfully) had to try it before, but other people says it works fine. you might try that before turning on the computer again. it'll just get rid of the excess moisture.
    3. taking apart the computer won't damage it if done correctly. ifixit is a good place to go for that kind of stuff. just know that if something does break, you'll be charged for a replacement part (though it looks like you'll have to pay for some replacements anyway). this might work for drying out, but i'd stick with the rice to be safe, just because it doesn't involve disassembling the computer.
    4. if your logic board is fried, you can possibly recover the data from the hard drive. the only possibility is that water entered the drive, rendering it useless. if you are going to attempt to salvage the hard drive, you'll need another laptop to put it in or get a drive reader. it plugs into another computer and reads the drive through the Disk Utility. i'm not quite sure where to get those, but i'm sure you can find on on Newegg.com or some reputable computer parts store.
i'm not totally sure how much apple charges for water damage repairs, but it's worth going to a store and they can see whats wrong and come up with an estimate and then decide whether to get a new macbook or to forgo the cost of repairs.
i'm really sorry to hear about your macbook, but i really hope something can be done. write back if you need more help.

  • Water Damaged Blackberry Storm 2 9520

Hi, I got rugby tackled into a lake with my BB in my pocket a few weeks ago and the phone got wet. i took the battery out straight away and then dried the phone in a bowl of rice for a few days. when i put the battery back in the phone worked fine for about a week and then the screen started to stop working sporadically before packing up altogether. the little water damage indicator on the phone has turned red but the one on the battery hasn't. even then the red LED still came on when i put the battery in and the 4 little call, menu, back, and hang up lights came on too. about two weeks later i had the device charged in my bag when i went into an old wifi spot i used and i heard the phone recieving emails, bbms and facebook notifications so it all still worked. i was fiddling around with it the other day and i could see thep phone was trying to load up when i plugged it in although the screen was very dim as if the backlight wasnt working. after a long time (maybe and hour or so) i looked at it again and could make out that there were a list of specifications and numbers on the screen in tiny print and a small icon in the centre of the screen that said "reset" on it. i tried to click this but the touch screen wasnt working so it didnt work. i was wondering if anyone knew if theres any way of fixing the phone?

It is possible, though difficult, to replace the LCD and Capacitive screen on the 9520. For the cost, it really isn't worth it.
If your Storm is powering up, I'd MAKE CERTAIN you backup using the BlackBerry Desktop Software, immediately, so at least your data is preserved.

  • If I'm already paying 149.99 to replace my water damaged Iphone 4 can I pay the Iphone 4s replacement price and get that instead? If No explain why please . Thank you

I have a water damaged Iphone 4 I have had for only 8 months. Today I went to the apple store to see how much a replacement was and the girl told me 149.99 for my iphone. What I was wondering is can i pay the replacment cost of an Iphone 4s and get that instead . I dont see the problem since my phone is broken anyways . But I would like to hearf if any one has tried the same thing.
    Thanks

The only exception would be if there were no like models available.  There was a short period when there were not sufficient supplies of the 3gs to effect warranty replacements.  In that case, they replaced the 3GS with a 4 at no additional charge.  But the warranty fine print specifies that they will repair or replace the device, at their discresion.
