Minus Front From Two Layers

I am currently following a tutorial to create some illustrations. One part of this tutorial makes use of the minus-front function with the pathfinder. An ellipse apparently needs to be "subtracted" from the bottom right-hand corner of a rectangle and its outline rectangle the lays behind it. I am unsure as to how to subtract the ellipse from both of those layers as it appears it can only be subtracted from one using the pathfinder.
Here are the steps in the tutorial:
Step 3 is what I am having trouble with.
All help is appreciated!
Thanks,
Alex

Alex,
To use the way described, you have to select one ellipse/circle for each underlying path and apply Minus Front to each set.
It should be noted that there are other ways of getting the appearance described.

  • Minus front from multiple layers

Hello, I am trying to subtract a "distressed" layer (A) from several other layers (B,C,D) at once. I would like to punch through layers (B,C,D) with layer (A).
I was able to expand font & expand stroke - Then minus front with success.
However, when I expand all layers, select all layers, hold (alt) & Minus Front
I get mixed results, such as missing layers from (B,C,D).
What would be the best way to achieve this?  Thank you
    White = Distressed layer (A)
    Black = Layers (B,C,D)
    Orange = Locked Background Color

since you are using Photoshop for mockups and you need the black art to be transparent--here is  (what I hope) is a useful idea:
simply build your art using white (as in your original post)  then save yourself a lot of time and effort by doing this--turn off the background layer and 'export' art as a high resolution (say 1200 dpi) graysacle tiff--then open the tiff in Photoshop and convert it to a 1-bit tiff--using '50% Threshold' setting (which will be transparent and just black).
you can then drop the 1 bit into an illustrator file with a colored background and save as PDF or export as jpeg, tiff, png etc (but don't save over the original Illus document--use a different name)
note: the 1200 dpi 1-bit tiff should yield you a a decent film positive or you can print the black layer only (from Illustrator) with the background turned off
there will be no loss of resolution!

  • "Minus Front" a simple shape on top of a complex clipping mask

I have a clipping path that is made up of:
    1. a complex assortment of vector shapes (a pattern) and
    2. a simple shape on top.
My pattern appears to be inside the simple shape, because of the clipping mask.
Now, I'd like to "punch-out" a shape in the middle of my clipping path, and have that punch-out be transparent. After creating my punch-out shape, I drag it to the same layer that has the clipping mask, select both (the clipping mask is below the punch-out shape), and slect "minus front" from the pathfinder window.
    It's not working.
    Any advice is much appreciated.

It is hard to imagine how an almost completely gone object looks like in the Layer's panel
See the little blue squares highlighted in the image, they indicate selected objects . This is called the Selection Column in the Layers panel. You can select any object with equal ease by clicking on the selection column - the red arrow points to the spot you can click to select that path.
Also, another alternative method to make what you want is to make the punch out shape with 0 opacity, put it above and in the same group as the clipping path and in the Transparency panel click in the box in front of the Knockout Group until a checkmark appears.

  • Pathfinder for shapes only? Can't minus front object from back...

Hi. I'm trying to minus the shape of the brown 'steam swirl' from the black swirl behind. I tried minus front in pathfinder but a warning pop-up says "the filter produced no results. Please select 2 intersecting paths" How are the two objects not intersecting? I tried deleting the brown object and simply have no fill on the black swirl but it dosen't look good. Any ideas?

Sure, Monika, but it's just what the screenshot shows and there it is pretty obvious what objects are meant.
As it is not obvious about what specific objects we are talking in the sample file, I'd suggest another approach.
Select the black shape, go to Object > Path > Outline Stroke, then in the Pathfinder panel Unite (Add to Shape). Then select both the beige and black shape and do Pathfinder Subtract. Or just create a compound path
One could also use the Pathfinder effects in that case.

Using the content aware move tool, I want to move an item from one image to another image but it does not seem to work. I think I need two layers on one document so how do I do this

    Good day!
A simple Paste does not work for you?
It should place the clipboard content as a new Layer which you can then move around.
If there is any chance that the elements need to be scaled, rotated etc. I would prefer to place them as Smart Objects (File > Place …) and do the masking that is specific to the images themselves in those.

  • Minus front/back issue

Hey guys, I am a newbee in Illustrator. Currently I am following a tutorial. I know most of the basic functions. But lately I have a irritating issue and cant seem to find a logical solution on internet too, of course I tried them. here are the details>>>
1.I have created a polygon with 150px radius. black stroke and yellow fill. then applied round corner effect from effects>stylize.
    2.next I went to object>expand appearance.
    3. then created another small polygon(75px radius) on the first one
(I want to subtract this small polygon from bigger polygon. both of these are, of course ungrouped)
    4. I selected both polygons using shift+click and clicked minus front in pathfinder
and error pops up, 'filter produced no results, select two or more intersecting paths'
    what am I doing wrong?
P.S. weird thing is, sometimes this filter works and sometimes I get above error for the same 5th step
I have started feeling its an issue of Illustrator...is it?
    tutorial that I am following>> http://www.vectorcove.com/tutorials/icon-design/logo-design-in-adobe-illustrator/

i think the problem is your expanded first shape is now a group consisting of a stroked object and a filled object., and the stroked object perfectly overlays the filled one (since they used to be a single object). so when you try to minus front, you'd end up with no shapes, as one of your shapes in front perfectly overlaps the shape at the back.
edit: yeah, looking at the tutorial, they didn't use a stroked object.

  • Pathfinder Tool - Minus Front (Front shape outline not included)

I'm having some difficulty applying the Minus Front option of the Pathfinder tool with a front shape that contains an outline with rounded points.
Question: Is there a way to preserve the rounded outline + front shape as part of the final shape when applying the Minus Front Pathfinder option?
    To recreate:
    1. Create background shape (Orange box)
    2. Add front shape with outline containing rounded points (Star shape)
    3. Select background and front shape and apply the Minus Front Pathfinder tool option.
    4. Rounded outline from front shape not transferred to final shape after pathfinder action is applied.

You might find this thread helpful:
    outlining text
The Pathfinder functions don't take into account "appearances" applied to the underlying object, so you would have to convert the object to a single outermost path. Usually this can be done with one or two invocations of Object > Expand.

  • One target table is loading from two different source but same columns but one source is in a database and other is in a flat file.

Hope you all are doing good.
I have a business issue to be implemented in ODI 11G. Here it is. I am trying to load a target table from two sources having same coulmn names. But one source is in file format and other is in Oracle Database.
This is what i think i will create two mappings in the same interface using Union between the sources. But i am not sure how the interface would connect to different logical architecture to connect to two different sources.
    Thanks,
    SM

You are on the right track, this can all be done in a single interface. Do the following
    1) Pull your file data model into the source designer and and your target table model to the target pane.
    2) Map all the relevant columns
    3) In the source designer create a new dataset and choose the UNION join type (this will create a separate tab in the source designer pane)
    4) Select the new dataset tab in the source designer pane and pull your source oracle table data model into the source designer. Map all the relevant columns to the target
    5) Make sure that your staging location is defined on a relational technology i.e. in this case the target would be an ideal candidate as that is where ODI will stage the data from both file and oracle source and perform the UNION before loading to the target
If you want to look at some pretty screenshots showing the steps above take a look at http://odiexperts.com/11g-oracle-data-integrator-part-611g-union-minus-intersect/

  • Synchronizing movement of two layers

I have a feeling I'm using the hard way to accomplish something simple, so I hope someone here can straighten me out.
What I'm doing is drawing an "indiana jones" type line over a moving 'map' layer (approx. 18" x 36") — moving generally left to right, but also some ups & downs. So, the line, as it's being drawn, and after it's drawn, has to move precisely in sync with the layer below.
I have no problem creating the line. Been there, done that before. But, never tried syncing a line with another layer that's in motion. As I'm currently doing it, it's very time consuming.
I tried a copy & paste of the keyframes from the 'map' layer to the line layer but that didn't work out too well. What I'm currently doing is manually keyframing the line about every 30 frames, but I'm thinking there has to be a faster/easier way to do this. So far I've keyframed about 1 minute, and have about 8 minutes & 12,000 more keyframes to go.

    Problem solved.
I decided to trash the project file that I've been struggling with, sending a lot of hours down the drain, but it felt like the right thing to do. Then:
First, I opened a new project.
Second, I imported the large image file.
Third, I opened a new layer.
Fourth, I grouped the two layers.
Fifth, I drew my line on the grouped layer
Sixth, I keyframed the group with the desired motion.
Now the movement of both layers are in sync. It was quick & easy.
Where I went wrong, which lead to starting this thread, is that after I imported the large layer, I keyframed the motion I wanted.
Next I opened line layer, drew the line, and keyframed it.
Then I grouped the two layers. So, even tho the layers were grouped, each was separately keyed, which caused the undesired result.
So, Kyriakos, I did in fact have a grouping problem. Not that I didn't group as you supposed, but that I grouped too late in the process -- which in turn lead to my keying the two layers individually, rather than as a group. Anyway, that's close enough for me. I'll give you credit for the solution.

  • To move an image behind a part of our "first picture", as if two layers are overlapped !

    Hello,
I'm french, and I already posted a question a few times ago, on this forum and I was very satisfied with your quick answers, so I come ask again a little question...
It's about Photoshop CS6 and I would like to know if it's possible to move an image behind a part of our "first picture", as if two layers are overlapped (the first picture and the picture that I add !) and one layer was partially hidden by the first !
It's quite complicated to understand and explain... I know ... and I'm very sorry ...
Example: If I want to move a book behind furniture (which is located in the center of my "background" or "first picture", surrounded by a nonuniform setting !), so to see only part of the book and the other part is hidden by the furniture ! Like the picture below (where we see that the "Coraya" is behind the desk !!) :
I thank you in advance for all your quick responses and I congratulate you in advance to your understanding and your professionalism about Photoshop !
    Makarsh

    Makarsh,
One easy way to accomplish that look is to add a Layer Mask to the "book" Layer, in the shape of the furniture, that you wish to hide part of the book behind.
That would probably be easier by creating a Selection for that part of the furniture, with the Selection Tool of your choice. I personally like to do such work with the Pen Tool (creates a Path), as it is very exact. However, if one is not comfortable with the Pen Tool and Paths, then the Lasso (perhaps constraining it for straight lines) might be easier. If you do use the Pen Tool, when complete, go to the Paths Panel, and from the little arrow in the top-right, choose Make Selection.
Then, with that Selection still active, go to the book Layer, and click on the Create Layer Mask icon, at the bottom of the Layers Panel.
If necessary, you can do touchup to that Layer Mask, after it has been created.
Good luck, and hope that helps.

  • Weird minus front thing going on when pdf saved in ID cs4 on mac

I have an indesign cs4 file with a couple layers. one the bottom layer is eps file with some shapes in it. On the layer above is a tif (product image) and it happens to be above the shapes in the eps file. When i export it as pdf the shapes knock the color out of the product image so its half white. Its acting sort of like the minus front pathfinder in illustrator but with colors. Its driving me crazy.

Not sure but I would try resaving that EPS as native AI file and see what happens. Also your flattening and PDF export settings will play a big role in this, I imagine.

  • Error: Got minus one from a read call, sporadic disconnections...

    Hello,
I am running JSP apps on Tomcat hitting against Oracle 10g DB. They have been working great. However, recently I am experience some bazzare events. Sporadically, webpages are only displaying partial result or even nothing from DB calls. When I checked the Tomcat log, I saw a bunch of the following error messages.
java.sql.SQLException: Io exception: Got minus one from a read call
I've checked network connection (by ping and tnsping) between the webserver and the DB server, and everything looked good.
Someone said running TOAD on the client machine can cause such sporadic disconnections. Indeed turning off TOAD did reduce the number of errors. However, when I tried to load up a same page from two different web brower instances, I still get the partial results on both pages.
Does anyone know what is going on? It looks like my app is not waiting enough to get the entire data back. Is there anyway I can do that?
Thank you very much for your help.

  • Got minus one from a read call ERROR

Hi friends. I am working on a Car Tracking Project with Google Map Api. So, i do a simulation of car movements. A car, passed stations then it would reach its final station. When car passed a station car id and station id are sent database's stored procedure. It is working.
It is working only one car there are. If i simulate two cars there will be a jdbc error:
Got minus one from a read call
?? Whats that? My stored procedure has less jobs. There is no dense job. Why i get this error? is there any limiting number of connections? if it is, how can i increase this?

  • Speed up intersection of two layers

    Hi,
I'm trying to make an intersection of two layers work faster. First I create an empty table:
    create table shptmp as
    select sdo_geom.sdo_intersection(t1.geom, t2.geom, 0.005) intersect_geom,
    t1.id, t2.id from SHPTABLE1 t1, SHPTABLE t2
    where rownum < 1;
Then I fill this table with intersection-polygons:
    insert into shptmp2
    select c.intersect_geom, id1, id2 FROM
    (SELECT /*+ ORDERED */ sdo_geom.sdo_intersection(t1.geom, t2.geom, 0.005) intersect_geom, t1.id id1, t2.id id2 from SHPTABLE1 t1, SHPTABLE2 t2
    where SDO_RELATE(t2.geom, t1.geom, 'mask=ANYINTERACT querytype=JOIN') = 'TRUE') c
    WHERE SDO_GEOM.VALIDATE_GEOMETRY_WITH_CONTEXT(c.intersect_geom, 0.005) = 'TRUE';
SHPTABLE1 and SHPTABLE2 both contain about 2000 polygons and multipolygons, and they have R-tree indexes. My resulting table shptmp contains about 9000 records when the query has finished. Anyway, it takes more than an hour to run the intersect-query. Is this a normal response-time for a spatial overlay of two layers? When I do something like a Union in ESRI ArcMap it only takes seconds or maybe minutes. Any ideas how to speed up this query? By the way my Oracle version is 9.2.0.1.0.
    Thanks,
    Anja

    Anja,
