"Mirror Agent" won't quit ?????

this has happened many times in the past, but I've never figured it out. After ******** Shut Down, I notice that the MacBook isn't shutting down. Suddenly, a message appears on the screen saying that "Mirror Agent" won't quit and is interfering with shut down. After three or four tries, I can usually get the thing to shut down. What in God's name is "Mirror Agent"? Something related to the OS? Some phantom app on my mac? Anybody else ever get this? -- david in Kansas City

This is the Tiger forum but the issue is old.

  • "Mirror agent failed to quit"

    i recently posted a question about what may be causing my imac to freeze while shutting down ... or at least take a really long time to shut down. i got a lot of good advice on potential problems, i ran the disk utility, fixed permisions, and disk errors.
    i decided to run updater, and after installing a security update, when my computer tried to restart it gave me the following message:
    "mirror agent failed to quit...(and then something like shutdown timed out)"
    is this a problem? any way to fix it?
    thanks

    brett,
    According to QuickTimeKirk, The "Mirror Agent" is the software that keeps your local copy of your iDisk in "sync" with your remote copy.It could be that you had made changes at Homepage and the files had not yet been "synced" to your local copy. If it happens often you can turn off the "automatic" syncing feature.;~)

  • Mirror Agent Crashing Constantly

    I have a daemon process that I discovered running on my iBook G4 in the console log and the activity monitor. It's called Mirror Agent. It keeps starting and crashing constantly. Sometimes when I try to shut down, I can't because it says "Mirror Agent" won't let me. Does anyone know what this is? Is it a trojan horse, spyware, or part of OS X on the iBook that is doing something strange. At a minimum, it is using system resources by starting and crashing over and over.

    Mirror agent is used by the system to synchronize your idisk. Sometimes there is a simple solution to fix this -- mirror agent may have opened a dialog box (hidden behind other open windows) with a message for you and it won't quit until you close the dialog box. The following link may help;

  • Mirror agent & failed logout-- HELP!

    There are a lot of other discussions on this topic, and many people seem to be familiar with the mirror agent failing to quit and freezing up the logout process, but I have been researching these discussions and the only one that had any tips was so specifically for people who understand macs in depth that I couldn't figure out what they were talking about.
    I have been having this mirror agent & failed logout issue for a really long time and I don't know how to fix it.
    And I don't understand when people just say "oh go to the whatever utility and take the tilda out of the library address" blah blah blah... I have no idea. :o)
    I see in the other discussions that this may be related to .Mac (I do have a .Mac account) or iDisk (I do use idisk, and have already changed the syncing preferences off of automatic) or something about mobile accounts... i don't really know what that is.
    logout is not the only time my powerbook is freezing up lately, and it's getting worse. I can no longer use Word without everything freezing up.
    Please please help! Don't be afraid to sound patronizing. I literally know nothing about the inner machinations of computers. I have tried a few other things based on other support discussions, but the problem still persists.
    THANKS!!!

    I've been having serious beach balls and I think it;s related ti iTunes but I noticed this post by TaosMouse and though ]t I 'd give it a try / let us know if it works .

    Mirror Agent can turn into your worst nightmare if your connection is intermittent. It will lock up the entire computer until it finishes what it was trying to do.
    This was annoying before, but it has become astoundingly un Mac like since .mac expanded to 10 gigs. Now you can wait 5 minutes if you have a problem. I know this because my wireless link (fixed wireless) someimes gets flaky, and I basically have to do situps until I can use my mac again.
    So.... Here's what you do: Go to System preferences -> .mac ->iDisk and click STOP under iDisk Synching On. That should do it, but you will no longer have a local copy of your iDisk to work with.

  • I've tried to troubleshoot downloading Firefox but it won't open on Windows XP. The Firefox Update box with the hour glass symbol runs for hours. Then I have trouble even shutting down. When I click on Firefox, no window, program won't quit, etc....

    Windows XP. I used to use Firefox and it worked okay. I'm not sure why I downloaded a new version but it won't open. The window that says "Firefox Update" continues to try to load. Hour glass symbol, for hours. If I try to click on the Desktop symbol, Nothing. Then when I try to shut down, it's slow, programs won't quit, or it freezes. I've removed Firefox completely and tried downloading again with the same results. Even with the latest version. Shit. Whassup?

    Hi zenithtwc, to test whether this is a settings issue, could you do a three-minute experiment?
    '''Create a new Firefox profile'''
    A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should have completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.
    Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run):
    firefox.exe -P
    ''Don't delete anything here.'' Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.
    Click the Create Profile button, assign a name like Test731, and skip the option to change the folder location. Then start Firefox in the new profile you created.
    Can it reach the internet?
    When returning to the Profile Manager, you might be tempted to use the Delete Profile button. But... it's a bit too easy to accidentally delete your "real" profile, so I recommend resisting the temptation. If you do want to clean up later, I suggest making a backup of all your profiles first in case something were to go wrong.

  • IPhoto 09 Faces wheel spins forever and/or won't quit

    Hope someone has insight or it helps others...
    For the last several days any import into iPhoto will set it into spinning the Faces album waiting wheel forever. There is no way to Quit. Other times just simple quitting won't work.
    Activity shows 40-50% iPhoto CPU usage, lots of context switches (270,000 in 5 minutes of CPU time) but no hangs, no faults. I have previously let it run overnight, in case it was somehow reanalyzing 18000 images, but even then the problem remains.
    Console shows: 10/12/09 3:55:58 PM iPhoto[653] * -[NSPathStore2 getCharacters:range:]: index (8) beyond bounds (3)
    as most recent item from iPhoto in the log.
    Looking inside the iPhoto Library folder the face.db database, iPhotoMain.db etc. have no activity going on. ( I tested by changing the face info on one picture, the Finder last modified date immediately changed, showing the processes are running fine, but just some runaway process won't quit.)
    Another console item showed iPhoto finding wrong architectured PGP plugin in contextual menu items, so I have trashed that. And, it finds a Chronos Notes related issue (contextual menu item in library and same named alias in user/library) throw an exception. I also informed ChronosNet.com of this....in case the recent iPhoto acting up is related to the SOHO update that was recently installed.
    "I've had iPhoto start acting up (fails to quit) since SOHO NOTES latest update... checking the Console shows a possible problem....
    You have a contextual menu entry (alias) in user/library and same name (original item) in library. That makes apps like iPhoto throw exceptions...
    10/12/09 4:29:33 PM [0x0-0x40040].com.apple.iPhoto[653] objc[653]: Class SBContextualMenuHelper is implemented in both /Users/imran/Library/Contextual Menu Items/ChronosNotesCM.plugin/Contents/MacOS/ChronosNotesCM and /Library/Contextual Menu Items/ChronosNotesCM.plugin/Contents/MacOS/ChronosNotesCM. One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined."
    Let's see what they state.
    Now.... Force quitting now to see what it shows in the logs:
    It did not show any quick console messages. I'm surprised an OS X "report this crash to Apple" window did not open up.
    Now relaunched... will see if it happens again...
    Imran

    iPhone is not "hung" in the traditional sense in that you can do several things within it while it's non-stop Faces spinning wheel displays. I do NOT find it responsive and it does NOT Quit when Faces is spinning forever. tgardner, your experience appears to be different.
    Checking in Activity Monitor shows that interestingly there are no hangs or errors. But, looking into contents of iPhoto library shows NO files are modified even after 24 hours or running. In other words, maybe it's not dead, but it is comatose.
    Also, checking in Console I always see a variable out of bounds error when this happens.
    I have 19000 images and of those maybe 5000 have faces, of about 50 people. ALL of those images are already processed with Names info. Even if Faces needs to update some data, 24 hours of nothing but iPhoto running ought to be enough but it is not.
    Others may want to check Console and Activity Monitor and add their experiences here.

  • Mail.app using 80% CPU and won't quit - any ideas?

    Hi, I'll try and cut a short story shorter...
    I tried to begin using Mail.app last night instead of Entourage and Thunderbird just to see what it was like. Having never used mail.app before, I use the bundled import wizard to retrieve the settings from the Entourage account (POP, wifes ISP account) which seemed to work ok. I didn't test at this point as I have another account (POP again, my gMail) stored on Thunderbird which I also wanted to import.
    To import the mailboxs from Thunderbird I copied the relevant folders from the ~\Library...\myprofile\... folder to the desktop and added the .mbox extension. Then used the import wizard 'other' option to bring them in.
    All seemed to go ok. I recreated my 'other' account manually and sent/received some test mails etc. then marked everyting in all mailboxes as read.
    At this point the laptop went very slow so I checked Activity Viewer - this showed Mail.app hovering between 70% - 80%. I thought this was a bit odd so I tried to Quit Mail, but it just hung. I then force quit and the CPU calms down.
    I opened Mail again and it was ok for about 3 minutes until I try to view various mailboxes. Mail is still responsive but the mailboxes are empty! I use the rebuild function and they show the messages again, unless I look at a different one and then go back to the rebuilt mailbox - it's empty again.
    Then the CPU/won't quit happened again. CPU is up at the same levels, Mail.app has 7 threads. I thought there may be some indexing going on so I went to bed. I got up this morning to find the G4 fans going crazy and CPU still consuming the CPU?
    Any ideas?
    I'm thinking I may trash both accounts and rebuild from scratch tonight.

    Hi Ian.
    Aside from whatever the problem is here (which I don't really know), you shouldn't add an .mbox extension to mbox files in order to import them into Mail. Mail uses that extension for something else. Also, you'd get better results using Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to do the conversion.

  • Print Proxy Queue Won't Quit

    On my Brother MFC connected by USB, the printer proxy app won't quit after the print job ends, and you have to click the proxy app's icon in the Dock, then quit the app manually. (You have to close it, as the computer won't sleep by itself after x amount of time if the proxy app is left open.)
    This is only intermittent. You can tell in advance if this is going to happen by not seeing a little piece of paper icon superimposed over the printer proxy app's icon in the Dock. No piece of paper icon = proxy app won't quit.
    Tried reinstalling all drivers, archive/reinstall, using Printer Setup Repair to "reset the printing system," permissions, Cocktail to deep clean caches including printer caches, all to no avail. New printing cables, connected directly without a hub. Happened on my HP LaserJet 3330 which died, and now on my Brother MFC-2070. Happened when I was using a Titanium laptop also, before the current G4 tower. Happens across many apps, although Office seems to provoke it more frequently.
    Ideas anyone, short of trying a totally clean install and reinstalling all apps an drivers from scratch to see if that helps? The OS install I'm working on is back from 10.2.0, and has been upgraded and archive/reinstalled multiple times, and has been used on multiple computers over the years. My Word 2004 Normal template dates back to Word 5.1 and has been converted/upgraded several times (6.0, 98, 2001, X, 2004; could this be a culprit as well); should I rebuild it from scratch (hours and hours of work there, many custom menus, etc).

    Premiere Pro CC slows down, then  stops working, then won't work, then it won't quit. So I have to force quit every time.

  • When iTunes won't quit

    I was having a problem where iTunes would not quit and stay quit. Even Force quit would only work for a second or two, then iTunes would restart. I tried several suggestions here, but none of them worked. Instead when I googled "iTunes won't quit" I found an answer on the blog The Mac Track (http://themactrack.com/2008/05/27/tip-if-itunes-wont-quit)
    He suggested opening the activity monitor then quitting the process genredetection.
    When I went to the activity monitor, I saw I had two genredetection processes operating. I stopped both of them. iTunes went back to normal.
    The blogger's source of the process was iWow. I don't have that, and don't know which application generated the process on my computer. I do now know how to fix the results.
    I thought I would pass this on for others.

    Excellent tip, thank you! I quit all the helper processes "orbiting" iTunes, but when all the usual suspects were already quit and I was out of ideas, going on a genredetection massacre did the trick!

  • Mail stops receiving mail and then won't quit

    Since I upgraded to Leopard I have been force quitting Mail. It seems to be associated with .Mac. I open up the activities window and there is always some e-mail stuck receiving in there. When this happens, no more mail is received and the application won't quit. I notice that it also happens if I go to sleep or I switch users.
    I have disabled all rules.
    I have emptied all mailboxes.
    I turned off growl notifications.
    I have enough space on .Mac.
    I have extended the check mail time.
    Honestly, it is pretty annoying. Anyone having this issue?

    do you have any other plugin or input manager or transfer of data from Mail to something else running with mail by any chance?
    If yes, then you may want to disable and try again.
    If no, then have you tried deleting and re-creating your .mac account and see if you still have the same issue?
    If that does not solve it, have you tried logging in with a different user account onto your computer, and then setting up your .mac account in Mail and trying to send. If you get the same issues then it may hint at app/system related issues, if you send/receive without an issue then it might be a user specific issue.
    If user specific issue I would repair permissions - applications>utilities>disk utility and repair permissions.
    hope this helps

  • Excel Automation in C# - Excel process won´t quit

    Hi there,
    I´m using Excel automation with C#. When closing Excel, the Excel.exe process still remains in the Task Manager. I´ve tried all the topics that can be found, but Excel won´t quit. When I make Excel visible and close it myself, then the process will stop.
    But when I call the Quit() method, it keeps running.
    Here is my code:
    Excel.Application oExcel = new Excel.Application();
    oExcel.Visible = true;
    Excel.Workbooks oWorkbooks = oExcel.Workbooks;
    string Pfad = "C:\test.xlsx";
    Excel.Workbook oWorkbook = oWorkbooks.Open(Pfad);
    Excel.Worksheet oSheet = oWorkbook.Sheets[1];
    oSheet.Cells[1, 1] = "Test";
    oSheet.SaveAs("C:\test.xlsx");
    GC.Collect();
    GC.WaitForPendingFinalizers();
    Marshal.FinalReleaseComObject(oSheet);
    oWorkbook.Close();
    Marshal.FinalReleaseComObject(oWorkbook);
    oExcel.Workbooks.Close();
    Marshal.FinalReleaseComObject(oWorkbooks);
    oExcel.Application.Quit();
    Marshal.FinalReleaseComObject(oExcel);
    oExcel = null;
    Thanks for any help!

    Sorry I didn't catch the problem sooner.  No need to do any of the marshal stuff or the releases.  they are not necessary.  when you modify the workbook excel won't normally close without the user being prompted if they want to save changes.
    So simply end you code like this
    If you don't want to save changes
    boolean savechanges = false;
    oWorkbook.Close(savechanges, Type.Missing, Type.Missing);
                    oWorkbook = null;
                    oExcel.Quit();
                    oExcel
    = null;
    Or this if yo do want to save changes
    boolean savechanges = true;
    oWorkbook.Close(savechanges, Type.Missing, Type.Missing);
                    oWorkbook = null;
                    oExcel.Quit();
                    oExcel
    = null;

  • New iMac - iChat won't quit....

    Hi,
    I just got my new iMac 24" and I've had no problems with it in general.
    I was flirting with the idea of joining iChat and getting an iMac acoount when I changed my mind. So I tried to back out and quit the iChat application.
    But the 'Welcome to iChat AV" window is stuck and stays there on my desktop. I've tried to shut my iMac down, but it won't do so - it tells me to quit the iChat application first at the dock and then shut down. But that's what I'm trying to do and nothing happens.
    Let me repeat that I am correctly attempting to quit the application from the dock area. But it won't quit.
    I appreciate any help on this,
    Many Thanks, Frank B.

    Well, I fixed it by forwarding through the interface but not filling anything in. Then I was able to quit the application.
    Thanks, Frank B.
