Mirror Display when Booting off Installer CD

So, the screen on my MacBook Pro spider webbed and is not usable. I currently have an external monitor attached. Is there any way, when booting off of the installer CD, to have my external monitor mirrored as opposed to extended desktop mode? Essentially, I need to use the external monitor as my primary monitor while I run some utilities off of the installer CD.
Is there any sort of key combination that switches from mirrored to extended desktop? Any other options for an environment where there is no System Preference Display pane?

have you tried just running a repair disk with the disk first aid in disk utility well booted to the install disk cause alot of times it might find a repair a error and then the computer will be ok to boot i would try running the disk first aid befor reinstalling the OS plus if it finds no errors there is always a archive and install that you can do which saves all your documents

if it finds errors then just try to keep repairing i would say a good 3 times if it doesnt get everything after that then a erase will be what you need to do

KT4 Ultra (MS-6590) no display when boots

I recently went out and bought a KT4 Ultra (ms-6590) and when i installed my new ATI radeon 9500 pro i get no display when booting. So i then installed my older Nvidia TNT2 M64 32mb card and i still get no display. my system has not sucessfully booted yet with this board and it is my first time using it. and i thought it might be trying to load from the onboard video but come to find it there is none. What is wrong?

It might be possible it is a bad AGP slot. Especially if two different cards and no difference.
Is everything else booting? I mean can you tell if the system is proceeding through POST?
It sounds like you just went to a store and bought this board? Can you attempt a return and try another?

No screen displayed when booting with options key held down

When I hold the option key down to select which OS I want to boot into I am getting nothing displayed on the screen but the booting has paused waiting for my input because I can use the cursor keys and return to get the system to boot.
Anyone got any ideas as to why I cant see the choices?

Just a quick follow up on this problem. I have just tried the Mac Mini on my TV using the HDMI port and I get the boot menu displayed when holding down the Option Key and it works fine. The issues are arising when I plug a VGA adaptor into the mini display port and use that with my monitor. The monitor is not reporting any out of range or sync signals while booting and I have tried 3 different monitors of various ages and all have the same result.
I also get no apple logo or any display while OSX is loading when I use the monitor

No display when boot from DVD

When I attempt to boot from DVD to run the Hardware Test, the display does not light up. The monitor's power light is on but the display is black.
What might cause this? How can I work around it?

Ah well, as is often the case, shortly after I posted the question the situation changed...
I tried booting from the DVD one more time. This time I left the DVD in the machine and used "Restart" instead of a cold restart. It booted fine. Yeah! I guess the monitor stayed in sync or something.
So the Hardware Test was run, terminated normally and reported no errors. Which is good news.

Error when booting off install disk: "panic: We are hanging here . . ."

My iBook's working fine except it's very slow (3 years old), so I decided to reinstall the OS.
When I try loading off my original OS X installation disk, it boots to an error "panic: We are hanging here . . ."
If I stick the install CD into the iBook while it's on, it reads the CD fine and even offers to reboot off the CD for me. But when I reboot, I get the same panic error.
When I take the CD out, the iBook loads fine again.
So my computer still works, but I can't figure out a way to reinstall. Any ideas?
fyi- I tried Disk Utility on my HD and it passed verification.

Call Apple Support. They may be able to send you a replacement disc at nominal cost (much less than new). I think you'll need your computer's serial number so they can get the correct one.
How does the computer handle other CDs? There's the slight possibility it is the drive and not the CD.
The other thing to do is to try and troubleshoot why your computer is slowing down and at least not to have to immediately worry about getting a new CD. Here's a bunch of reading. However, I wouldn't blindly go running a bunch of utilities but to address things one by one. For example, one major slow down is an over-full hard drive and no utility will help with that.

Kernel Panic when booting off OS 10.4.4 DVD

Friend's eMac computer - 1 Ghz, 512 MB RAM.
I put the DVD in, boot from it and this grey screen comes up telling me
"I need to restart my computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." In several different languages.
Over this screen is a jumble of text
"panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002DFAA8) : Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerMac4,4......."
Ok, I'm guessing the OS DVD I inserted is only for Intel iMac's (which I have).
Crap.
One other question.
I ran Disk Utility several times to repair permission on the eMac before attempting to put a new OS on it. When running Disk Utility on the eMac, the permissions repair would never finish, just hang endlessly, each time on the same file/block ./usr/man/man1 I believe
So I booted it up in Target mode to my Intel iMac and ran Disk Utility from there to repair permissions. It finishes everytime but each time it keeps trying to repair the ./usr/man file, says it did so successfully but upon running it again, and again, it keeps repairing this same file, and reporting it successful.
Frustrated, I created a Disk Image of the hard drive and erased the computer.
Does this permissions thing mean this computer may be screwed?

Look like you already answered your own question for iMac DVD on your eMac.
Try to buy official tiger os x from apple store, or you can buy the eMac tiger os for the fraction of the price at auction sites.
Make sure they sell you the original one and not the bootleg/cpy one.
And I cannot guarantee it will work for your friend eMac 1 Ghz.

ps: I managed to install using eMAc installer dvd from my eMac 1.42 to my eMac 1.25.

Macbook Pro will not boot on external Firewire drive. Mybook with 2 partitions containing 2 OSX images using CCC. Volumes will not display when booting but do display when the internal drive is running OSX using Startup utility.

I've reset SMC and PRAM several times. Activiatng Terminal from Recovery HD displays the following:

Applejack is just a command-line "front-end" for a number of different command-line tools you can use in single-user mode, and I'm not sure whether it's Lion-compatible. You can always try booting into single-user mode and executing:
/sbin/fsck -fy
That's unlikely to solve your problems, though. Since you can't boot from two different hard drives and your optical drive, that indicates there's a more serious hardware issue, or multiple hardware issues.

Letterbox display when booting

i have a 2012 macbook pro running latest osx. in order to give a presentation to parents at school i booted the computer while connected to an lcd projector with a different resolution (800 x 600, i think) than the macbook. now, whenever i boot the macbook it has black letterboxes on either side of the screen.
the first time i booted it after the presentation i had to switch the resolution back to 1680 x 1050. once the computer gets past the apple logo and that circular rotating dash thing, it reverts to 1680 x 1050 and the letterboxes go away, but for some reason it bugs me.
is there a way to stop it from doing this?

"Mirror Displays" Problem

I just bought the new Mac Mini with 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD, and 256MB video memory. It´s connected to a Samsung 1080 40inch TV using mini DisplayPort to DVI to HDMI connection and a Dell 24WFP monitor using a mini DVI to DVI connection.
When I´m in extended screen mode it all works fine but when I turn on "Mirror displays" it cuts off about 20 pixels on top and below on my TV and squeezes the image into a 16:9 ratio on my 16:10 dell monitor. Mac detects both displays and sets their resolutions correctly.
If I switch and try the mini displayport for my dell monitor and the mini DVI for my TV, the TV works fine but the same 16:9 squeeze happens on the dell monitor.
I feel it has something to do with converting the Mini DisplayPort signal into DVI but that´s just a guess.
Apple sure don´t make it easy.

When you go to System Preferences > Displays there is no setting for Arrangement or Mirror???
Note that when you have an external display attached, there are two windows, one for the built in display and one for the external. I suppose it's possible they look like one window. Drag them apart and you should be able to see the settings.

Disk Utility broken while booted from Installation CDs??

Situation: I have a Macbook Pro with a 120 GB HDD. I had partitioned it into two partitions, and later desired that I should have only one partition on the drive. I booted the Mac OS X installation CDs and attempted the following three-step procedure:
1. Use Disk Utility to image my system partition into a file on an external USB drive
2. Verify the image and repartition ("Erase") my laptop's internal HDD
3. Restore the disk image from the external HDD to the laptop's HDD.
I made it to step 3 without issue. So currently I have one unbootable Macbook Pro, an 85 GB image of a system partition on a USB HDD, and a perfectly bootable Intel Mac Mini from which I'm writing this post.
Problem: Disk Utility doesn't seem to be able to restore images when booted from the Installation CDs. On the 'Restore' tab there are two fields you must fill in, a 'source' field and a 'destination' field. The source field has a button where you can summon a very helpful file-picker, and it pulls up my disk image from my USB drive just fine. However, the destination field can only be filled in by clicking and dragging a drive from the left panel in Disk Utility.
However, it seems impossible to do this while booted from the Installation CDs. When I attempt to click and drag a disk from the left panel list, all I end up accomplishing is selecting multiple items from the list. To make a visual illustration:

There doesn't seem to be any way to actually select a destination drive. If I had to hypothesize, I would guess that the GUI is crippled when you boot from CD and click+drag is deactivated. But that appears to make it impossible to restore images since the only way to select destination drives is by clicking and dragging.
Now I am a college student; I'm not really losing revenue or anything over this, but this is an awful oversight on Apple's part and I am stuck on what to do about it. There is no documentation that says "Restore functionality is crippled in Disk Utility when booting from installation CDs." Here are the steps I have tried for an alternate solution:
-Commandline diskutil. Unfortunately Apple has crippled it and there appears to be no imaging functionality whatsoever.
-Mount the image manually and cp the files back over. Unfortunately I can't make it preserve permissions. I passed the right options to cp but it just won't do what it's supposed to. I tried copying it anyway and using Disk Utility to repair the permissions, but it still wouldn't boot.
-Call Applecare. The support rep was kind and helpful but couldn't offer a solution. The higher-ups fed me some BS about not supporting third party applications, well, I hardly think Disk Utility constitutes a third party application.
My next step is to boot the MBP in target disk mode and use my mac mini to restore the image to the MBP HDD, but I have to buy a firewire cable for that and I don't really want to.
Seeking: acknowledgement that Disk Utility is broken and Apple *****, or otherwise immediate solutions to restore the image to my HDD that do not constitute monetary expenditures on my part.

Others have (in the Mac Pro forum) noticed this bug in Disk Utility on the Intel version install disks. Your easiest fix would be to reinstall OSX on you Macbook disk, boot it, mount the disk image from the USB drive, and use the Migration Assistant to copy over all your accounts and data files.

Can't connect to LAN when booting MBP from external drive?

In an effort to always work in my computer environment, I backup my Mac Pro main drive to an external firewire drive, plug in to my new Macbook Pro 2.9 and option start off this drive. Result is I'm working off the last backup of my main Mac Pro drive so all my apps, stored mail, etc, is alive and well. I merely track any changes and new files and copy them over or use DropBox to get them on to my Main Mac Pro, my main computer.
Problem is, when booting off my external drive running Lion 10.7.5, my MBP's network won't turn on or recognize my home LAN. Then if I restart off just the MBP drive, it does connet to my LAN automatically.
Could the problem be that since my MBP was set up for Mount Lion, that it won't fully work with a drive with a Lion OS on it? I thought perhaps I had to turn on Airport when on my external Lion drive, since I don't have that turned on on my Mac Pro which uses ethernet. Can't figure this one out. The MBP must have airport as I'm on it now but booted off the internal ML OSX drive.

No not at all. You should have access to your LAN from any version of OS X that is set up correctly. It's still using the same hardware and should be loading the same drivers for that hardware and YES you may have to actually turn on the Airport card.

Weird messages displayed on booting up

Hi All!
Since a lot of time ago, I am receiving below messages when booting:
1) got a wrong device descriptor, warm reset device
2) cannot enumerate usb device on port 2
these errors are regarding to my external hdd connected through usb 3.0 to my laptop. I have installed linux and boot it from there.
My laptop is new, and the external usb 3.0 cable as well. My external hdd is working ok, without problems but those messages comes every time I boot linux.
I highly appreciate if someone could explain me why those messages are displayed when booting and how to solve it?

When I tried downgrading udev to 164, I got this message:
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: upower: requires udev>=165
When I tried downgrading upower, it turned out there was only one version being 0.9.8-2. This package is required by gdm and gnome-session.
Is there any way I can solve this?

Set OS to always mirror displays

I often have to do presentations where the projector is not powerful and it's incredibly difficult to see the cursor on some setups. Thus it's easier to look at my laptop, rather than the projected image, ie I need things mirrored.
On my previous mac, it seemed to remember my previous settings and always mirrored displays. On Mountain Lion, it does not mirror by default and it's then very difficult to operate the machine because the resolution (on the projected image) isn't high enough.
Wondering if there's some thing I can hack, or a maybe an obvious setting I'm missing, so it can default to 'mirror displays'?

1) hook up mac to a new, inferior digital projector
2) mac defaults to 'non mirrored', my laptop only shows what amounts to a blank screen, while the actual desktop is being projected
3) but the projector is not good enough to do fine detail; even getting it to 'mirror', so that I can "drive" the presentation through my laptop is difficult.
Previously, this is what happened (before I had mountain lion)
1) hook up mac to a new inferior digital projector
2) it seems to remember my preferance, everything is mirrored
3) I start working
It's like mountain lion tries to outthink itself when interfacing with a new device, saying "i'm going to default to what I think is best, not what I remember from your last device".
Not sure if that explains it. The easiest summary is: I want the OS to always default to 'mirror displays' when detecting new displays.

When booting up on PowerMac G4

Hi, all i have a PowerMac G4 that every time that I start up normally it gives me the blue background that would be at login and that is all the further it goes. I have tried to boot off of a OSX 10.4 install disk and it goes as far as the blue background screen and that is it. It does the same when booting off of disk warrior any help!!!!!!

I have also tried to boot into single user mood and nothing. I have even gone as far as trying to boot of off a leopard install disk and the same thing happens. I have tried resetting the CURU on the mother board and no result. I have tried replacing the batter on the mother board and no result. I have also reset the PRAM and the VRRAM. I have run out of ideas here I don't know what else there is to try.

My 2009 iMac gets stuck on the grey Apple logo when booting up. It boots correctly when in safe mode. I have tried erasing the HD and re-installing from a USB installer. It says the install is complete, but after restarting it gets stuck on the Apple log

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
