Mirror file??

hi
I'm having a tidy up og my hard drive, and I just found a huge (10g) file in my user/library/mirrors
that appears as my user name and a .dmg tag
Any ideas on what this might be, when i try and open it Omnioutliner opens but no info given
regards
Steve

Hi,
I have copied an answer from another thread, but it doesn't really totally answer our question. I too am running low on drive space on my G4, but from the paste below, it looks as if this mirror dmg will continually get recreated if I keep syncing on (a necessity for me). Does anyone know definitively if we can get rid of this file yet keep syncing? I'd love to have my 10 GB back since I only have 75 GB on that computer.

This web site (http://macosx.com/forums/mac-os-x-system-mac-software/297290-problem-users-libra ry-mirrors.html) has some discussions which may help in understanding what the file does. Basically it is a local copy of your iDisk contents so you can get to it when not connected to the Internet. I am guessing you could delete it but it might be re-created unless you configure .Mac not to do so.

  • How to mirror file server?

I run a small office network with Mac OS X Server 10.4.x doing various services including AFP. My wife and I also work from home and we would like to be able to access remotely various files which are held on the server.
We can do this over the internet, but the connections are not too quick. Ideally I would like to be able to run a mirrored copy of the file server on a little server at home, so that we can access the files locally and then have the servers keep each other up to date across the internet.
    Is this possible?
    TIA
    James

Can anybody help me with this?

  • Huge mirror file

    Hello,
After installing Leopard I noticed a really huge file labeled Users/myname/Library/Mirrors/0016cb.......9/myname.dmg. Almost 10 GB in size. Do I need it? I'd like to erase it or move to the external HD.
Then, I have about 50 files all 8 MO in size in Users/myname/Library/FileSync/0016cb...9/myname_iDisk.sparsebundle/bands/number . Same thing, do I need it?
At last, after installing Leopard I have every half an hour an error message poping out saying "PubSubAgent quit". Apparently, causes no specific problems, but is annoying. Somebody knows about it?
Thanks for any help, I see there is much more serious problems you guys have.

This is a new function in Leopard which, from the feedback about it, has some problems. Apple introduced an RSS reader in the mail.app Mail application. Plus in the Mail application preferences it mentions RSS feeds.
    Try this:
In Mail go to preferences - menu Mail | Preferences. Then go to the "RSS" tab. Check what it says is the "Default RSS Reader". Change the "Check for updates:" from "Every 30 minutes" to "Manually".
Let us know if this solves this issue for you.

  • Gigantic Mirrors File

I got a warning on my MacBook that the disk was almost full. I got rid of gigs of crap and when I restarted, got another message that the disk was almost full. I used WhatSize and found a 21 Gig DMG file (I only have a 55 gig hard drive) in a folder called MIRRORS in the LIBRARY folder. What is this thing and how do I get rid of it? Since it’s in LIBRARY, I don’t want to mess with it until I know what it is.
    Derek Boles

It has something to do with iDisk Syncing and MobileMe (.Mac) I think. If you have MobleMe (.Mac), look at your preferences for disk syncing and turn it off. Get rid of the file and reclaim the space.
I'm taking this info from [this article|http://macosx.com/forums/mac-os-x-system-mac-software/295439-user-libra ry-mirror.html]
Or.... get a bigger hard drive.

  • OIM Unix Connector : creating mirror shadow ,passwd file

    Hi ,
I am deploying unix ssh connector and want to understand why I should create mirror file? reason for asking this is if I create user with password and that password is going to be in mirror file then who / how we make system to recognize that user is created with xxxx password.
    Thanks In Advance.
    Regards,
    Ankit

How the code works, you need to at least have the files there. The code will copy and sort those files and compare with the passwd and shadow file to determine if any new users have been added.
And to perform a full recon, you must make sure the passwd1 file is empty.

  • How to create redlog and control file at ASM in linux RAC

    Hi Experts,
I will to maintance a oracle 10g database at ASM as RAC iin linux red hat.
i am a new person with some question.
nornally speaking, oracle recommadition for oracle 10g database as
create 3 copy fills for control file
create at least 2 redo log with mirror files in system.
    However, I checked find
redlog file is at FRA place +FLSdisk1 and no mirror
control file is at FRA place--+FLSDISK1/
    datebase file at ‘+DATA1/
There are no mirror for relog.
Go to EM, I also could not find place to enter file name.
We use ASM to hold database to support RAC.
Do i need to create redlog file as
    ALTER DATABASE ADD LOGFILE GROUP 1 ('+FLSdisk1/sale/onlinelog/REDO01.LOG','+FLSdisk1/sale/onlinelog/REDO01_mirror.LOG') SIZE 1000M reuse;
my boss told me that ASM is reliable.
Do you need to creat more directory to arrange redlog and control files in ASM for RAC system?
FRA is a good place to store control file and redlog file ?
    Thanks
    JIM
    Edited by: user589812 on Jul 3, 2009 3:03 PM

ASM is reliable but a smart DBA is very careful. If ASM is doing mirroring this is like RAID doing mirroring. What happens if you accidentally delete one copy ... the other one disappears instantly. Not a good idea.
With respect to redo logs you need a minimum of three groups, two members, and one thread per instance. So a 2 node cluster should, at a minimum have 12 physical files.
Not mirroring the redo logs, assuming multiple members, is not as critical.

  • Huge .dmg File in Library

I've got a .dmg file, same name as my .mac account name, sitting in my users/library/mirrors/001b639659db folder: patrickfifth.dmg
It is 20GB in size! I tried to throw it away and it says it is in use.
Any idea what this is and why it showed up?
    Thanks.

That would be because you have turned on mirroring for your iDisk. Open your .Mac preferences in System Preferences, click on the iDisk tab and turn off mirroring the iDisk. If the mirrored file doesn't get deleted automatically you can safely delete it after you've turned off iDisk mirroring.

  • Trojan.Haxdoor-131 file corruption ...

ClamXav discovered 2 Phishing .Card-28. It also located a Mail library folder that was corrupted by the Trojan.Haxdoor-131. I trashed all three. I did save the corrupted Mail folder called: /Library/Mirrors/###...
My question is do I need to replace and then repair the Mail Library folder?
All seems well in Mail without it. If I had known better I would have had my virus scanner simply repair that file. I have saved the corrupted Mail/Library/Mirror file to a dvd.
    Thanks in advance.
    G5 dual 1.8   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Trojan.Haxdoor is a Windows only trojan, so it technically cannot have corrupted your Macs Mail library. It was probably just found in an email message, which would not have caused your Mac any harm.
All you needed to do was delete the offending email message from within Mail.
If I were you, I would restore the backup of the Mail library, then locate the email that has the Windows-only trojan attached in Mail, and delete that.
Deleting random files manually from the Mail library really is likely to corrupt it!
Obviously ClamXav isn't clever enough to know that!

  • [SOLVED] vsftpd on Local Mirror, running but not working

I'm building a Local Mirror on a vm (vbox) with bridged adapter and fix-ip by following this wiki.
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Loc … cal_mirror
After the painful rsync and those setup, I tried pacman -Syu from another Arch vm (no firewall).  I received the following error.
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from 192.168.100.100 : Service not available, closing control connection
I've tried by nmap on the hosting PC and find that the vsftpd should be running.
    Starting Nmap 4.62 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2010-08-27 01:03 HKT
    Interesting ports on 192.168.100.100:
    Not shown: 1714 closed ports
    PORT   STATE SERVICE
    21/tcp open  ftp
MAC Address: 08:00:27:76:33:1C (Cadmus Computer Systems)
Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 1.318 seconds
In the wiki, it suggests to use "ftp" to replace "mirror" for ftp_username & nopriv_user.  I tried both.
I also find that there is no "archlinux" under my /home/mirror/files as "suggested" by the following statement in vsftpd.conf
    # Chroot directory for anonymous user
    anon_root=/home/mirror/files/archlinux
I tried both (1) amend the vsftpd.conf to remove the "archlinux", and (2) manually add that directory with owner/group=mirror.
Meanwhile, I only find under /home/mirror/files 6 items - community core extra community.lastsync core.lastsync extra.lastsync.  Have I completed the rsync successfully?  Or, something is missing.  Is the directory structure correct?
Is the sample vsftpd.conf in the Local Mirror wiki updated?  I've cross reference it with the vsftpd wiki but I'm not knowledgable enough to find things useful.
    What else should I check?
I love ArchLinux so much that I really hope that it can work.
    Please help.
    Thanks.

I have tried couple of Linux distro to learn Linux/Network.  I like ArchLinux's "simple" concept, light weight, updated packages, nice document and fast bootup/shutdown.  I have installed over ten times ArchLinux in different virtualmachines and netbook in the past week.  I will keep some, delete some and create more.  I don't have a fast internet connection and that's why I would like to set up my local mirror.  I am a newbie here, so please feel free to let me know if I am taking too much (bandwidth) from the community, and it is not encouraged for my case.  And sorry if I have already created any trouble.
    Well, back to my problem.
    1. After the rsync, including everything, the / now occupies 14G harddisk space.  Is it a normal size for a local mirror?
    2. I have inserted "Server = file:///home/mirror/files/$repo/os/i686" as the first line in its /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
        pacman -Syy  looks fine.
pacman -Syu  gives a list of warning (xxx: local is newer than core), end with "there is nothing to do"
pacman -S mplayer  starts installtion normally, but need mirrors on internet cause a large portion of software is missing/inaccessible on my local mirror.
    3. I have tried to login by FileZilla from an Ubuntu vm, and receive this error message (on FileZilla)
    Status:    Connecting to 192.168.100.100:21...
Status:    Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
    Response:    421 Service not available.
Error:    Could not connect to server
Seems I have issues on both the mirror and the vsftpd.  I prefer to resolve the vsftpd problem first, but all suggestion/comment are very welcome.
Lastly, did I post my question in a wrong place?  If yes, please let me know.

  • RAID for control and red log files

I'm considering one of these two configurations
    Option 1:
2 disks kept as separate disks (not using RAID), storing control01.ctl, redo log group 1 on first disk, and storing control02.ctl, and redo log group 2 on second disk.
    Option 2:
2 disks configured as a RAID 1+0 volume (mirroring and striping) holding control01.ctl and a redo log group.
(Data files and third control file are elsewhere on the disk array.)
With option 1, I have the option of dropping a control file and dropping a redo log group if a disk fails and then continuing processing. But with option 2, if the RAID array fails, I'm sunk.
I'm thinking option 1 is better. What do others think? And why?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris Curzon

Your Raid option has the following advantage: since it mirrors things, a person can [accidently or maliciously] simultaneously remove all control files and redo logs with a single remove command, effectively crashing the database into near unrecoverability.
Option 1 would have the disadvantage - for the person identified above - in that they would need two separate commands to ruin the system.
But, with simple mirroring, between the first and second command, the system would have halted and hopefully alerted someone that a weird but recoverable thing is happening. And the DBA would be able to get going simply by copying the mirrored file to the other, removed, location.
Message was edited by: Hans Forbrich
To make it clear - the advantage is NOT on the DBA's side ...

  • Mirroring arch [SOLVED]

has anybody ever run any numbers to find the threshold number of users and average package usage to justify a local mirror?
we have about 7 desktop boxes using x and 6 servers.
for myself, i have install 238 packages coming in at a svelt 428M for /var/cache/pacman/pkg after running pacman -Sc.  that's probably about the average for the desktops.  our servers average about 85 with the cache running about 100M.
the problem is that that's simply a snapshot, the actually volatility of those packages and the average size per time period is lost.
we're currently mirroring testing, current and extra.
at first we thought this was a great a idea until one of my co-workers suggested that running a debian mirror over at the local university they found the benefit questionable.  of course, debian is a _very_ large creature, and 3 architectures on unstable may have accouted for that.
for our part, the only wasteful things i can think we're mirroring is kde and openoffice.
what might actually help in decision making would be a package/size change list over certain time periods.  like hourly or daily.  anybody seen anything like this?
probably going to try ntop on this box, but thought i would solicit over experiences first.
    any thoughts?
    thanks,
    jp

okay, so the feature i was looking for in pacman already exists, which i swear it didn't.  but after testing a bit more, i see that i was wrong.
i thought i got this error if you setup your mirrors files and a package was missing.  say i rename bind to xbind on our mirror and try to sync it with my pacman.conf just directly listing our mirror:
    [root@aragorn ~]# pacman -S bind
    Targets: bind-9.3.1-1
    Total Package Size: 1.9 MB
    Proceed with upgrade? [Y/n] y
    :: Retrieving packages from current...
    failed downloading /archlinux.org/current/os/i686/bind-9.3.1-1.pkg.tar.gz from beethoven.3yd.com: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found
error: failed to retrieve some files from current
but when i go back and simply put our mirror file, and try with bind still renamed i get this:
    [root@aragorn ~]# pacman -Syu
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
    testing [##############################################] 100% 30K 759.6K/s 00:00:00
    current [##############################################] 100% 44K 1236K/s 00:00:00
    extra [##############################################] 100% 195K 1146K/s 00:00:00
    [root@aragorn ~]# pacman -S bind
    Targets: bind-9.3.1-1
    Total Package Size: 1.9 MB
    Proceed with upgrade? [Y/n] y
    :: Retrieving packages from current...
    failed downloading /archlinux.org/current/os/i686/bind-9.3.1-1.pkg.tar.gz from beethoven.3yd.com: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found
    bind-9.3.1-1 [##### ] 11% 214K 76.6K/s 00:00:24
that meant that that single mirror didn't have the file.  but after just testing pacman does appear to try the next mirror in the list.
so it appears that my solution is simpler that i could have hoped.
i can run rsync filtering out packages (include filter generated from multi-package lists from above, thanks snowman), we setup our mirror files properly and if someone wants something thats not listed, then they have to go to their next mirror to get it.
thanks again everyone for the comments and good ideas.  i'm still going to look into a few of the other ideas.  the encrypted nfs mount is of other interests at this point.   i may still setup a noauto nfs mount for our cache that is the repo for our laptops that allows us to quickly mount an existing cache when here, and just use our own when not.

  • Out-of-date mirrors

I'd just completed a net-install of Arch, selecting my geographically closest mirror during the install (which made sense at the time), and tried to install the necessary graphics driver for my card only to discover it was not available. A quick look at the mirror revealed the reason - it's not been updated since August!
Is there something that can be done about this (like removing the mirror from the pacman package)?
I now have to wait another day for the 240MB of updates from a mirror that has been updated in the last 4 months to download.
    The mirror in question: http://ftp.parrswood.manchester.sch.uk/ … linux.org/
(note it doesn't even have the change to "core"!)
    Yours extreamly annoyedly,
