Mirror MacBook Air on external display

How can I mirror and access my Air on my Samsung Smart TV. Do I need Apple TV? Thanks FarmEire

According to the specs at this page: http://www.apple.com/macbookair/specs.html
"Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors"
So it "should be" working.
Have you tried some other resolutions?

  • How do I connect MacBook Air to external display?

What methods are available to connect a MacBook Air to an external display?

The MiniDisplayPort/Thunderbolt Port on your Air would be used as the the physical connection. It's just a matter of buying the corresponding adapter to the type of connection you want to use, being either HDMI, DVI or VGA.
Here's an example of the VGA adapter Apple sells.

  • Macbook air 2012 not displaying icon on the top right corner

    hi guys
as the title, my macbook air isn't displaying icon on the top right corner. for instance, my volume icon and wifi icon disappear. furthermore, ocaasionally there some flashes on my screen. this never happen to me before and i am reinstalling my OS 10.8 right now. Anyone know what is wrong with my laptop?

    Hi Matze_Moto,
It should not be an issue. What you are seeing is the ability to Mirror your display to an Apple TV. If you feel that there is an issue, click on the menu to see if it is actually connected to another display. Check out the article below for more information.

  • Hi, can i use my macbook air as a display for my PS3?

    Hi,
I want to connect my PS3 to my macbook air as its display.  Is it possible?
If it is. what cable do i need?

It can actually be done, yes. You just need an application called "type2phone", which is available in the Mac App Store. Note that it does cost $5 (kinda steep for a novelty).

  • Magic Mouse Disconnecting When Closing MacBook Pro Using External Display

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro. I am trying to use it in sleep mode with an Apple wireless keyboard and a Magic Mouse. Everything appears to be connected fine. When I close the lid on my MacBook, I click my mouse and the external display comes on for a few seconds, then it cuts out and doesn't come back. I have the Bluetooth device can wake the computer up from sleep checked. When I have the MacBook open, the external display works fine. I only lose the external display a few seconds after I close the lid on my MacBook Pro.
I have made the Magic Mouse and keyboard favorites and it didn't help.
Does anyone have any idea? I am running 10.6.8.
    Thanks

GaryKing, can you review how you reset the .plist files for both the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse?
I had nothing but good things to say about the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, until I hooked up my 22' Samsung display to my MBP. Power shouldn't be an issue because it's being plugged into the outlet and the external monitor isn't taking power from the MBP. However, my keyboard will keep popping up with the notice "Connection Lost" every 5 or so minutes. Even now, I'm already on the next paragraph but the letters are slowly coming up one by one - it's not registering as fast.
The mouse experienced the same issue if I'm downloading a lot of files, it will lag behind to the point where I'll drag the mouse to where I want it to be, then a few seconds later it'll pop up where it should, that's how bad the lag is. I thought perhaps restarting the computer will do, but no, and also everything is up-to-date so there are no updates to worry about.
GaryKing, if you can go over how you reset the .plist files, that would be much appreciated. By the way, it's past a week since your post, how have the Bluetooth devices been working? Did the reset solve the lag issue permanently, or was is just a temporary fix?

  • Thunderbolt - Using the macbook as an external display

Hey, just wondering if Im able to use my macbook as an external display for my imac instead of my imac being used as an external display for my macbook? Im using thunderbolt to connect them.
    Cheers

No. Only iMacs currently support that via Target Display Mode. You can use a utility such as ScreenRecycler or a VPN utiility to display the screen via the USB port, but it will be quite slow. You can also use Screen Sharing in the Sharing preferences.

  • How to mirror MacBook Air display to iMac?

Essentially, I want to use my iMac as an external monitor for my MacBook Air. I want to be able to use my laptop keyboard to type on my iMac.
I like using my MacBook Air keyboard, but I don't like looking down at the laptop screen.
I like using my iMac screen, but I don't like using the iMac keyboard.
    MacBook Air 2013, OSX 10.9.4
    iMac, OSX 10.9.5.
Shouldn't these two be able to talk to each other?

    Hi Anarachnic,
Apple has a very useful way of using the display of one compatible computer as an extra monitor for another compatible computer - such as using your iMac as a display for your MacBook Air. This is called Target Display Mode.
This article gives a good explanation of how to use Target Display Mode -

  • Macbook Air 2008, LCD display nothing but grey, external display works

    Hi Everyone,
I've got a 2008 Macbook Air running 10.6.8 on a 1.86GHz Intel Core 2 with 2GB RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M. About a month ago something went wrong with the logic board - the unit wouldn't start up and gave 3 beeps indicating a bad RAM issue. Since the RAM is soldered directly to the logic board and the warranty was way past expired, I figured I'd just replace the board. The replacement was a breeze, albeit time-consuming, and once I got the new board in, the unit booted up fine.
The problem is that now the display isn't quite working right. When it first boots the screen is completely grey - I get no spinning disc, no apple, no question mark, nothing. If I leave it alone, the screen dims once the sleep timer kicks in, but it's just a darker shade of grey. The brightness works too - when you reduce it the screen does dim but there's still no picture. The kicker is that I hooked up my projector to it and I can my desktop as I should. I tried resetting the NVRAM, ran disc utility, and tried running the Apple Hardware Test. The thing with the AHT is that I can't see the screen when it's running so I don't know exactly how it went, but in System Profiler I see that an AHT was run today and the result was "Passed". I don't know if that means no errors came up, or that the errors that did come up weren't problematic enough to fail the test.
I was very careful in replacing the logic board so I doubt any of the internals were damaged in the process but everything seems to indicate a hardware issue here. The screen was working fine before the previous logic board died so I find it hard to believe that both the board and the screen died at the same time. I've read about some people finding the data display cable to be the problem but no amount of fussing with it causes even the slightest change on the LCD display.
Any suggestions of how to diagnose the screen and/or cable without a working display? I just put $300 into this machine in the logic board and I really don't want to spend even more to replace the screen/cable.
    Thanks,
    Kyle

    Hi Marat,
I appreciate the quick response but I doubt the machine is completely toast - it clearly still functions to some degree. I'm trying to assess whether the replacement logic board could be the problem (and how to test this) as well as troubleshooting the issue if it isn't the logic board. I don't feel like getting stuck with a $300 logic board that might have a fried component...

  • Macbook Air and Cinema Display

I am looking to purchase a cinema display for the mac book air and am curious which size would be best to use? I'm going for biggest and per specifications the 23" looks like it would work but with possible resolution loss. I am trying to avoid the resolution loss but want the biggest size. Again, I am looking for the best cinema to go with the mac book air without major quality loss.
    Thank you.

On the specs it states 1280x800 is the max resolution. So if mirroring is off it will output a much higher resolution?
You only read the part of the video specs that's about the internal monitor. Only the internal monitor is limited to 1280x800. Further down there is a section that says
Extended desktop and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 1920 by 1200 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors
It will drive the 23" no problem. The only Apple monitor the MacBook Air can't drive at full res is the big 30".
Apple doesn't organize the video portion of the tech specs all that well, so whenever you check the tech specs page for an Apple product with external video, be sure to locate both the internal and external display specs.

  • Macbook air, which external HD to use?

    Hello all,
Here is the solution I want but i don't know what device to use.
Im looking to buy a macbook air, and a thunderbolt bolt display an ~2TB external HDD.
Now I have a large HD video collection which naturally will have to be stored on the external HHD due to small SSD on the macbook air. Now what worries me is the transfer speeds I want something thats transfers fast. Idealy I would like the hard drive to be either thunderbolt or usb 3.0 connected into the thunderbolt display, then i could connect the one thunderbolt cable to the air when i dock it, and bobs your uncle.
Now the more difficult bit. What if i also wanted this HHD to be wireless, so I could use the machine say on my lap in bed, and still be able to transfer files to and from the HDD, and the apple TV will also be referencing it to play the files stored on it. I know the transfer speeds at this point wouldn't be as great as the wired connection but thats ok as this would only be on the odd occasion.
Am I looking for something that doesn't exist? or have you got any suggestions?

Both thunderbolt AND wireless. That's alot to ask, especially when you realize that there are but a handful of Thunderbolt drives yet available.
If you want both blazing fast, and wireless capability, I don't see how it could be practically done with one volume. I mean, you could use a Thunderbolt drive, that also has USB capability, then alternately connect such drive to your network drive enabled wireless router, or directly to your MBA by the thunderbolt connection, but it seems like a bit of a hassle.
I use both the Seagate GoFlex w/T-bolt adapter and the LaCie Little Big Disk (thunderbolt), to get really fast external storage. I prefer the Seagate solution, for flexibility reasons (and cost). I mean, I can actually connect a bare SSD to the Seagate Thunderbolt adapter and get transfer rates that rival the internal drive (in excess of 450 MB/second). That is smoking fast. Seagate has a 7200 RPM GoFlex portable drive, that when connected to the T-Bolt adapter, provide a very reasonably priced (in relative terms), fast drive setup. You could easily connect the same drive to the included USB 3.0 adapter, and then hook it to your network drive enabled router, for wireless operation.

  • MacBook Air with external monitor and wired network

    Hello,
I'm investigating the possibility to buy a MacBook Air 13", but I have a big doubt: most of the time I work in office, with wired LAN and an external DVI monitor.
I've seen that I can buy an USB to LAN adapter and a DisplayPort to DVI to connect to the Thunderbolt port, but in this case I will have only one USB port free a no other Thunderbolt.
Is anybody advising a different set of periferals to deal with this environment?
I haven't found any Thunderbolt "HUB" around, does this exist, to multiply the Thunderbolt port?
Thank in advance for any advice
      Massimiliano

Naturally yes .. The problem is not the USB itsself, but the fact that original adapters from Apple (LAN and DVI) are made from a Thunderbolt connector, and they do not replicate the port where they are connected to.
Others party LAN adapters that comes on USB port are only 10/100 Mbs, whilst the Apple's one is a Gigabit. This is why I asked for some sort of Thnderbolt hub, or any other experinced advice..
I know that the MacBookAir comes with a good 802.11n integrated wireless, but as you know (or can imagine), when you are in the office a Gigabit connection is another movie, especially if you are tranferring large amount of data or are connected to huge centralized databases.
I was preferring a MacBook Air to the pro for it's monitor: for me a 1440x900 is much more better than a 1280x800 when I'm out of office. On the other hand, the version with the retina display is at the moment too expensive for my budget.
The final solution could be a MacBook pro 15", but I was preferring the 13" when in mobility, for its form-factor.

  • Trouble with Macbook Air to VGA display using miniplug.

I purchased a plug that fits into the digital output and has a VGA female plug on the other end.  I have connected this with a VGA cable to a monitor.
I can see about half of the desktop (the default celestial stars picture) but no desktop Icons that display on my computer.  Is there a special setting to allow the Macbook Air to output to a VGA monitor?
    Thank you.

In the display settings you'll have to choose which monitor you want to be the primary one, the default is your MacBook Air's monitor is the default, so all the icons are visible on there and on your external monitor you can only see background or whatever windows you place there.
System Prefernces > Displays > Arangements and drag that little white rectangle on top of one of the screens to whichever monitor you want to be the "main" monitor.
    Did this help?

  • Why can't I shut macbook air when cinema display is connected?

I just upgraded from an older MacBook Pro to a new MacBook Air.  I have an older Cinema Display that I want to use with the new MacBook Air.  I can get the Cinema Display to mirror what's on the macbook air screen, but I would like to be able to shut the MacBook Air and just use it like a desktop computer when its connected to the display (I have an apple bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse).  Every time I shut the MacBook Air it shuts down and the Cinema Display goes black.  I had no problem getting it to work the way I wanted with my old MacBook Pro.  Any wisdom on this?   Thanks!

  • How do I use my Macbook Air with a display?

I wish to use the display with the Macbook Air. The screen on the MBA is too small for home use so I want to use the display instead. How do I do this? It's awkward to type on the MBA keyboard and then look at the display next to the MBA.
However I want to keep the MBA as my main computer because I like to use the MBA outside my home a lot. So that is why I do not buy an iMac.
I also do not want to go to the trouble of syncing a Macbook Air and an iMac.
I figured if I can use the hard drive on the MBA and then use the cinema display to show everything like my LCD screen that would be great.
How can I get around the problem of awkward placement on my desk?
Can I buy a keyboard and will that prevent the need to type using the MBA's keyboard?
I plan on replacing my old MBA with the new MBA that has two USB ports.
Will the separate keyboard and display fit into a USB hub? I need to keep one hub free on the MBAir for the USB ethernet.
Is it just a matter of plugging the cinema display and keyboard into the MBA and then just typing away, using the MBA's hard drive?
I do not know how this will work.
    Thanks for any explanation.

There are two USB ports on the display. Use one for ethernet and one for the keyboard (a USB mouse can plug into the keyboard).

Yes. Or you can use a wireless keyboard and mouse.
