Mirroring a MBA to 1080 HDTV - TV2 or TV3?

OK folks, I want to mirror a MBA 11 (1366x768) to a 1080 HDTV (1920x1080). I think I need a TV3 but not sure so here's the question:
I've found people who wants to display their notebook screen to an HDTV, many time the picture come out fussy, not sharp compared as in notebook screen, I (half educated guess) this is due to the notebook pixels are not being mapped 1:1 to the HDTV.  So, that's what I want to do, I want to map the MBA's 1:1 to my HDTV, if the result that I get black borders on the HDTV, that's OK, but I want a sharp display on the HDTV.
Am asking about a TV2 because I can get a used one cheap. but 1366x768 -> 1280x720 look like I'll be missing some information, *IF* I insist on 1:1 pixel mapping.
I like to know what your folks real-life experience with this matter?
TIA

Hi,
I don't about your ratio question but AppleTV 2 is only 720P capable.  If you want full HD at 1080P, you need an AppleTV 3.  That's basically the only difference between the two.  As for how this relates to AirPlay mirroring, I will let other answers.

  • IMac won't offer display mirroring option when connecting to HDTV with Thunderbolt to HDMI cable

I have an iMac, and am trying to connect to my HDTV to use as a second display (mirror). I am using a cable with a Thunderbolt connector at one end, and an HDMI on the other. I know the cable works because I have used it with my MacBook on other TVs. When I use this on my MacBook, I simply open displays, and between the tabs marked "Display" and "Color" there is always an "Arrangement" tab to select. When I try this same setup on my iMac, the only two tabs I can see are "Display" and "Color" - the option to mirror disdplay (or recognize the HDTV in any way) simply doesn't exist.
I would welcome any help. Thanks much, Doug.

OK, yes your Mid 2011 has a Thunderbolt port.
Reset > the System Management Controller
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
and the > NVRAM and PRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
Then try connecting the TV to the iMac.

  • Mirroring resolution (appleTV(v3) 1080 vs HD TV 1080)

Hi, i bought an Apple TV (version 3) couple days back
Went home connected to my Sony Bravia HD TV and activated the mirroring function on my Ipad 2.
However the image is only projected as 3/4 covered in the centre of my TV screen. So i will see my Ipad standby screen on the TV which is
only covered 3/4 in the centre with all the black spaces surrounding it.
But when i activated a game, the game is able to covered my TV screen fully.
I am puzzled why the image projected as 3/4 when my Ipad is at the standby screen and when i activate to a game, it is able to project fully on my TV screen,
Since the apple TV is sold on the basis of 1080 in their packaging, i would assume that every image projected on TV should be able to fully covered
    under the 1080 resolution.
Can any technical specialist pls advise.

so can i conclude that " mirroring" and "airplay" isnt referring to the same content?
When Mirroring an Ipad 2 standby screen - you will notice the black bars by the side of the TV
Airplay would enable the projection of image that can fill the TV entirely (of cos provided the content is of higher aspect ratio.
Yes and no, the difference occurs between Basic AirPlay and Mirroring. For example if you mirror the iPad while viewing a web page with a video in it, that's exactly what you will see on the Apple TV - A web page with a movie in it and black bands at each side, because you are mirroring a screen which doesn't fit your TV screen.
If however you choose just to AirPlay the movie from that page, the movie itself will fill your screen because it is the same aspect ration as your TV screen (assuming it is of course)
Somehow i spoke to the appleTV  technical guys and conclude that connecting to a smaller inch TV. (eg 30 inch) instead of mine at 42 inches, the image projected would be fuller as compared to a wider TV
Sorry, whoever you were talking to is talking nonsense, or you misunderstood them. The physical size of your TV will make no difference whatsoever.

  • Mirror two MBA Displays?

Is it possible to connect to of the latest MBAs with a thunderbolt cable and have their displays mirrored (ie put one into target display mode).
    Thanks.

Although TDM isn't supported you can accomplish the same goal by using Screen Sharing through the network.
Enable it in System Preferences > Sharing on one MBair and access through the finder on the other MBair.  It would be the same end result in a less efficient method.

  • The fan must work hard mirroring from MBA to ATV and the computer gets very hot, solution?

I bought an Apple TV (3) for watching web tv by mirroring the screen. The picture is good but the computer gets hot, very hot. The fan on the computer is working hard and the sound of the fan interferes my TV watching. Is it normal that the fan is running as much as it does? It starts just after 3-5 minutes. Is there any solution?
My computer is a Macbook Air 13" i5 (mid 2012)

    Hi Rudegar
I found this to be an interesting post... so...
I just ran a 13 min Youtube video from my Macbook Air (mid 2012) i5 on Air Play Mirroring to Apple TV3 and I didn't experience any appreciable heat nor any fan noise.
My MBA is encased in a clear Speck case, and my house temperature is about 21C (72F).
I just wonder if Hejmattias has something else going on or are we just seeing manufacturing variation?
    cheers

  • 2006 Mac Mini running mirrored display on display and HDTV

I have an early 2006 Mac Mini.  Got a DVI to DVI/VGA splitter as that's the input my TV has(RGB VGA/3.5 audio).  Plugged it in and if I connect it to both my monitor and my TV I get nothing on the TV.  Unplug the monitor and the TV works.  Is there a way to get them to work while both plugged in?  I'm perfectly fine with mirroring.
On a side note, I know the max for VGA is going to be 800x600, but it doesn't fill up remotely anywhere near the full screen.  Is there a way to stretch that so that it does that?
I just want this to be able to power the display so it can be used and also be able to stream things to my TV, preferably without constant switching of the splitter for the ease of other users. Anyone have any thoughts?  And no, I don't want to spend the money on the Matrox system.  Thanks for the help.

Now what if I bought a DVI to VGA to connect from the DVI split side into my monitor via VGA, would that work?  Or will it being split into VGA and DVI already screw it up and I therefore need to just get a straight DVI to dual VGA splitter?

  • How to mirror my iPhone on my HDTV wirelessly?

I have what seems to be a pretty simple need.  Essentially I want to do a slide show using photos on my iPhone 6, displayed on my Samsung Smart HDTV.   I know I can get an adapter that will allow me to run an HDMI cable between my iPhone and an HDMI input on my TV, but if possible I'd like to do this wirelessly.
I don't have an Apple TV - I assume I could do it with that, but before spending $100 I'd like to find out if there are other ways to do it.  Maybe using Chromecast?
    Thanks for any help/suggestions.

You may find an app that will store your photos and is compatible with a Chromecast - someone here may have a suggestion but you'll probably be better off doing a Google search on your own.

  • Unable to Airplay-Mirror Screen (MBA 13" mid-2013, ATV3)

    Hi everyone,
6+ hours of research into this situation, I am yet to find a concrete solution.
I have a MacBook Air mid-2013, 13", 1.7GHz i7, 8GB RAM, running 10.8.4. I am trying to use AirPlay to mirror the screen to my third-gen Apple TV (with latest software) which is connected to the router over Ethernet.
Here's where it gets confusing: I am able to AirPlay-mirror my iPad perfectly fine, and I'm able to use Home Sharing from my MacBook's iTunes as well. Both work perfectly fine. But the moment I try to mirror my screen from my MacBook Air, the option does not show up. My Apple TV is not being recognized, but yet I can Home Share?
I reset every device, I even re-did my network settings and went will Apple's suggested network config, all to no avail.
Please advise in any way you can. I know these MacBooks have been known for Wi-Fi issues, but Airplay Mirroring was the sole reason why I bought the Apple TV.
    Thanks!

    Hey Jorge,
Did you find a solution for this?  I have the same computer and I'm having the exact same problem.
    Thanks in advance,
    CJ

  • HT201335 How to mirror mac image onto the HDTV via Apple TV (already upgrade to Mountain Lion)?

Please help on this, many thanks!

Ensure all devices are on the same network.  On your mac go to settings-display-look toward the bottom you should see an airplay menu select your apple tv.
    AirPlay Mirroring
Requires a second-generation Apple TV or later. Supports the following Mac models:
    iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)

  • Connecting to Sony 1080 HDTV

I've connect my probook to the TV with a VGA Cable and have a decent picture when viewing on- line movies. When I connect the cable to the computer all icons on the computer screen get larger. I've been playing with various computer display settings but would like to know if there's a "standard" I should use. I have a choice in the display Color LCD and VGA display. Both offer a variety of choices. Any suggestions on the "best" choices?

    dvi alone typically implies dvi-d
but you need the -something after the letters 'dvi' to properly define which type of dvi
the current apple mbp dvi port is 'dvi-i dual link', it has both digital (essentially hdmi, but without all the features) and analog (vga) outputs (dvi-d dual link plus vga)
dvi-i is multiple standard, so it accepts a number of different connectors, for connecting to hdmi on your tv, you'd use a dvi-d connector to the mbp
    so...
you can use either the apple adaptor to connect a vga cable
or get a dvi-d to hdmi adaptor (cheap) and use an hdmi cable
i find using hdmi gives much better picture quality than vga

  • How to Optimize 3D from Mac to 3D HDTV with Apple TV

I have been trying to stream a 3D movie from my Macbook Pro to my 42" LG 3D 1080 HDTV via Apple TV, and it works, but not perfectly.
The details: I have an MP4 formatted 3D movie, which plays with horizontal side-by-side frames. Running the movie in Quicktime at full screen, I mirrored my Macbook to my TV via Apple TV and then turned on the 3D feature on my TV. The TV converted the side-by-side frames to 3D and it appears in 3D when I wear the 3D glasses (they are passive glasses), but the image I see is not quite perfectly in focus, it seems off in regards to clarity, and there is a distracting vertical bar appearing on the right side of the screen (some sort of remnant cut off from the main picture, which looks like a reflection or something from the video).
What to do? I tried to adjust the very limited 3D settings the TV offers, but it had no effect. I know the 3D feature on the TV works correctly because I've tested it with ESPN 3D content streamed from my cable box and it looks really good.
Any suggestions? Are there any other video playing apps that could optimize this process?
I was thinking of copying the MP4 file to a memory stick and just plugging that into the TV, but I really wanted to see if I could get this to work from my computer so I could have access to a library of movies with more ease. I like the concept of High Definition 3D but I do not have the desire to invest in a Blu-ray 3D player right now, so I just want to make this work with my existing hardware.
Thanks for any suggestions and help.

A quick update on the situation, I solved a bit of my problem, but not exactly as I had hoped; by removing my Macbook and Apple TV from the equation I successfully played the 3D movie on my TV.
The solution to get the movie to play correctly was to load the MP4 onto a USB thumb drive and plug it directly into the TV. Movie played, 3D worked (better, without artifacts and imbalances) and I was even able to turn off the subtitles through the TV's settings, however, my attempt to wirelessly mirror the movie from Macbook to TV via Apple TV was a fail.
2 more things: Although the 3D "worked" it still didn't feel as robust or have the depth I experienced when viewing ESPN 3D, and after 10 minutes of watching the film in 3D my eyes started to feel funny (first time this ever happened with passive glasses), so I switched to 2D mode.

  • Creating stills in photoshop cs2 for 16:9 HDTV

    Hi,
I've been reading posts regarding creating stills and still need some clarification. I'm from a print world, so dealing with square pixels vs. non square, hdv, vs dv widescreen is all a bit confusing....
I've been to this link: http://www.fcpbook.com/Photoshop1.html and several others, plus reading the manuals which all have been helpful, but each instance deals with different specs, not necessarily what I've listed below.
First, I am creating the stills for 16:9 viewing on a hidef tv (1080). The FCE HD project is an animated, narrated story with overlays, keyframe motion and some limited effects.
    Here are my questions:
    1. In creating my original photoshop template: should I use pshop's presets under "new document":
HDV, 1920 x 1080 (with guides) and if yes, what should the aspect ratio be set at? Square or HDV anamorphic? (When I do "HDV anamorphic" I get a squashed look in FCE, with "square" it looks good.)
    2. Saving the photoshop file to be imported into FCE, would it be better to save as a jpg, or photoshop or other format? I've been reading differing opinions as to which...
    3. Once I create this template (above) can I crop down the still if it doesn't fill the entire photoshop template (I will have some overlays that will not require a full frame in FCE).
    4. some images will be enlarged in FCE. Instead of enlarging them in FCE, should I be enlarging them in photoshop? should I be enlarging exponentially, ie doubling the size of my original photoshop template? And if I'm enlarging them less than 150% in FCE, would the image lose it's sharpness at that enlargement?
    5. And finally, I've already created some of the stills in photoshop using the photoshop presets for HDV 1920 x 1080, pixel aspect: square and brought them into FCE. Is WYSWYG in the FCE's canvas window what I'll be seeing on my TV monitor (16:9 1080 HDTV). The images are not squashed and look great, but I'm not sure if that's what I'll end up with when I finally view on my tv.
    Thanks for any help!

    1. If you're working in FCE in a 1920x1080 sequence then that's what you should make in Photoshop, square pixels not HDV.
    2. Save as Photoshop, TIFF, or PNG, not JPEG.
    3. Yes.
    4. Enlarge in Photoshop if they have to be enlarged. You should never double the size of an image. It will quickly start to deteriorate, especially when it's re-compressed. You'll have to live with it not being full size. You should never enlarge an image more than 115%. It will start to soften and make encoding more difficult.
    5. No. The Canvas is a lo res representation of the final output. For professional work most editors use an external video monitor to view their material. This can't be done unfortunately in FCE with HD material.

  • PowerMac G4 533DA & HDTV - video resolution / refresh rate problem

Hope someone can help, I need to access more resolution / refresh rates than I currently get in the Leopard display control:
I have a PowerMac G4 533 Digital Audio running Leopard 10.5.8 (unsupported).  It has an upgraded AGP videocard, a ( flashed PC - RV200 chipset) Radeon 7500 w/ 64MB and a DVI output w/ a VGA adapter.  I have used this Mac perfectly with my 19" widescreen Samsung SyncMaster 940BW, at a resolution of 1440 x 900 / 60Hz / millions of colors.  This monitor is actually for my MacPro, but I used it for the G4 to set it up.
I  moved it to my living room to use as a basic HTPC.  Since it runs Leopard, it has up to date VLC, Quicktime for video files and a working Superdrive for movies.  I don't expect it to play anything more than 480p properly, I think that was the best I got on YouTube.  But if I have a DVD ripped to DivX or MP4 it plays them fine on the Samsung monitor.
I connected it to my Viewsonic N3760w 37" 1080 HDTV.  It turns on, gray screen w/ Apple and gives me a working desktop.  The problem is that I cannot get it to give me the correct resolution and more importantly it seem to have the wrong refresh rate.  It is currently set at 1280 x 768 / 60Hz / millions of colors.  The screen give me like a small line slowly moving up across screen, higher refresh rates only make it movie faster up the screen.
According to my Viewsonic, these are the resolutions for computer using the VGA plug on the tv:
    PC - 1360x768 (preferred) , 1024x768, 1280x768
    Mac G3/G4/G5 - up to 1280 x 1024, 1280x720 (preferred)
Please note all of these are lower resolution than my Samsung monitor.  My Viewsonic also has on screen adjustment of " phase " and " frequency " as well as the usual color, contrast, etc available.  Is there a 3rd party app to manually adjust the resoluion and refresh rate?  I have seen Windows programs, does one exist for Mac OS X?
TIA, sorry for the long post

My Viewsonic also connected by VGA, no problem.
I wish I knew more. I checked out the app you did a trial of. I noticed this statement on their web site:  Quote
    "After rebooting monitor stays blank
For some reason your monitor does not accept the installed frequency. SWITCH IT OFF!"
This is the type of statement that would 'worry me.' -- having the phrase: SWITCH IT OFF! all in caps seems to imply a possibility of damage...which I mentioned in my initial post. (and the site goes on to talk about how you should even then connect another monitor to change the settings you've made that were not accepted).
As I said, though, I wish I knew more for sure about this. It seems that you not only did the obvious of checking System Peferences>Display, but also realize the Viewsonic has buttons that can influence it's screen image, most about position of the image on the screen but at least one item about resolution on mine. (under Setup Mode)
For what it's worth, my Viewsonic is about 6 years old now, still fine, and has eight (8) possible resolutions shown in System Preferences.
    Re: Your numbers.
    It is currently set at 1280 x 768 / 60Hz / millions of colors.
    PC - 1360x768 (preferred) , 1024x768, 1280x768
    Mac G3/G4/G5 - up to 1280 x 1024, 1280x720 (preferred)
If you're only talking about a difference of 1280 x 768 and G4 1280 x 1024, perhaps just stretching the picture using the Viewsonic buttons is the way to go.
Or, from the numbers, perhaps the G4 just wants a resolution closest to it's preferred state!?
    Anyhow, good luck.
