Mirroring Data from Xserve to Xserve

Afternoon, Long time lurker first time poster.
I’m interested in seeing if anyone is mirroring an xraid to another xraid as a backup. And the possibility of using it to work from if the primary fails.

Are you looking for something like ipfailover? Check this doc if so: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305066
Ive tried all sorts of methods but frankly I think a load balancing solution on the front end is the way to go. It also means you dont have to "waste" an entire spare server on standby.

  • Pushing Audio or A/V from an old Xserve

I want to run iTunes on my G4 xserve and push the music through to my stereo. Possibly do the same thing for video content residing on the drives. It appears that I would need some sort of doohickey converting Firewire to the three A/V RCA jacks. Does such exist and if so, who makes it? Could the original USB handle streaming audio across it or is that too slow. Didn't Griffin make some kind of USB to audio doohickey a few years back?
Or is there a different way to get A/V out without springing for some kind of board?
And if I want to play music AND send the video/audio from a movie to a different output simultaneously, THAT would probably need an extra board?

I think an Xserve G4 is probably the hardest machine you could choose to try and do this job.
Firewire is a SCSI out that only transports data so an "doohickey" would need to do Digital to Analog conversion and that's assuming you can get an audio and/or video player that somehow targets the firewire as an output because you can't do it on a system level. All the system can do is attempt to transport a file itself - like an mp3 - out through the firewire it doesn't stream the data from the file sequentially at it.
I think the only hope you have would be to install a video card and an audio card into the PCI/AGP slots and that would be a challenge. The video cards that worked with the AGP slot were well documented and you could probably find one of those although you would might probably need to convert the video out to analog depending on your TV inputs. (RCA inputs are analog.) The number of audio cards with drivers for the Mac then was low but finding a an old-school PCI card with Mac drivers to output audio seems unlikely. There were probably video cards with analog RCA outs and TV tuners but I don't remember any of them having Mac drivers.
I think this is a square peg and round hole problem. This is a trivial task for certain models of computers (even very cheap ones) but is huge task for Xserve especially an old one. To get this working you will need to research, find and the get working a series of cards and converters and then you're still stuck with an Xserve within cables length of your TV and stereo. I'd look into buying an older Mac Mini that has the outs you want on it and attaching your media on a firewire drive. It will be easier, way quieter in your media room and maybe even cheaper.
    Sorry, my $.02,

  • How to recover data from failed drive that's part of mirrored raid

    Hi Guys,
hope to get help from someone knowledgeable out there. I have a macpro and recently experienced a failed drive. I set up that failed drive as part of a mirrored raid, this set is not my primary drive and so my computer is stilling up and running but now am wondering how I access the data from the mirrored drive. Should the mirrored drive automatically mount on my desktop whereby I would be able to access the files? This is my first drive failure and I was under the impression having a mirror would duplicate my data and allow me to access it in situations like this. I'm a bit of novice in this area and not sure if the data is truly on the "mirror" or if there are things I need to do.
I launched disk utility and was able to see the mirrored drive and I selected "mount" drive but it would not mount; I then selected "verify" and got "unrecognizeable filesystem" Is this normal? Am I suppose do something to get access to the mirrored drive? Do I install a new drive in place of the failed drive and expect the raid to rebuild automatically whereby I then see the data?
    Your help is much appreciated.

Even with a mirror, you still need a backup.
Along with Disk Utility, you still need 3rd party (TechTool Pro 5, Disk Warrior 4.1.1+).
And if you like to use RAID and esp mirror RAID, consider
http://www.softraid.com which is a step above (the pdf guide, manual you can download and they have a demo, so worth the read). SoftRAID can also import/convert an Apple RAID to its own format which has been known to recover drives and data.

  • Can I create a mirrored RAID1 from an existing striped RAID0 without erasing the data?

I have a 1.5 TB striped RAID0 with 3 500 GB drives. I have a clone of the data from the 1.5TB RAID on a non-RAID 1TB drive and a 500GB drive. I'd like to create a RAID1 mirrored set out of all of these disks. I can partition the 1TB into 2 500GB drives and combine that with the other 500 GB. I'd rather not erase the data to create the mirror. Is there a way to rebuild a mirrored set from the existing 1.5 TB striped set, or do I need to start all over? I have a third copy of the data that I could put on the new mirrored RAID if necessary.
The data is aperture, itunes and imovie libraries. To back up a minute, is having a RAID1 a good option or is there a better solution that I am not considering?
PS I'm using a 2.53 GHz macbook pro unibody with 8GB of RAM.

First off a mirrored RAID requires two drives of equal size (could be two striped RAIDs of equal size.) So, as I understand what you have to work with you can create a single 500 GB mirrored RAID using two of the 500 GB drives.
You could create a striped RAID array using two of the 500 GB drives, then combine it with the 1 TB drive you have to create a 1 TB mirrored RAID. But this would not be the best alternative because if one of the smaller drives in the striped array fails then you lose everything on those drives. Not so bad as long as the single 1 TB drive is OK.

    Hardware or Software RAID?
RAID Hardware Vs RAID Software - What is your best option?
RAID is a method of combining multiple disk drives into a single entity in order to improve the overall performance and reliability of your system. The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
    Pros and cons
Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. This is because it has more available configurations and options. An added benefit to the slightly more expensive Hardware RAID solution is that many Hardware RAID systems incorporate features that are specialized for optimizing the performance of your system.
For more detailed information on the differences between Software RAID and Hardware RAID you may want to read: Hardware RAID vs. Software RAID: Which Implementation is Best for my Application?
Do You Really Need a RAID?
There is only one thing a RAID  provides - more space.  Beyond that a RAID can’t help you with:
    Accidental deletion or user error
    Viruses or malware
    Theft or catastrophic damage
Data corruption due to other failed hardware or power loss
Striped RAIDs have a higher failure risk than a single drive
The purpose of a RAID is to provide high speed mass storage for specialized needs like video editing, working with extremely large files, and storing huge amounts of data.
If your array fails it means complete loss of data and hours of time to rebuild.  RAIDs degrade over time necessitating many hours of restoration.  And, if you don't know much about RAIDs then you really don't need one.
You can use a RAID for backup.  But unless your backup needs involve TBs of data requiring rapid and frequent access, why bother?  TM works in the background.  It's not like you have to sit there waiting for your backup to be completed.  Furthermore, you're buying two drives possibly to solve a problem where a single drive will do.  And, one drive is less expensive than two.
Ignoring overhead, two drives in a RAID 0 (striped) array should perform about twice as fast. However, as the array fills up with files that performance will degrade.
RAID was a technology that in it's time was meant to solve a problem.  Large capacity, fast drives were extremely expensive.  Small drives were cheaper but slower.  However, combining these cheaper drives into arrays gave faster performance and the larger capacity needed for data storage needs.  Thus, the reason why it's called Redundant Array of Inexpensive Drives.  But today you can buy a 3 TB drive with performance that's better than the 1 TB drives of two or three years ago.

  • Two Xserve and Xserve RAID configuration advice

I'm configuring a brand new set-up and I'm looking for input in RAID configuration.
Basically I have two essentially identical Xserves: 2.3x2, 80x2, 500 and a fully loaded XRAID running 6 drive RAID 5 with a hot spare on each side all running through a fibre channel switch. One Xserve is slated to be a pure fileserver and the primary XRAID access box and the other will handle web/email/database serving etc.
I'm going to use the first 80 as a system drive (mirrored to the other 80 for redundancy) and I wanted to carve out about a 500gig partition of one of the RAIDs for the webmail server to use as its data drive so it would have the RAID 5 protection. Unfortunately to properly get this configuration I think I'd need to heavily slice one of the RAIDs and then use LUN masking to hide the drives from the respective machines. I guess I could then use Disk Utility to to concatenate the remaining slices back into a single volume - but this seems like adding layers of complexity to what seems like it should be a simple task.
Another thought I had was to re-create the RAID of one side as a 5 disk array, use the extra 500 gig drive as a mirroring drive for the internal Xserve 500 and while I couldn't swap them out directly I could replace a 500 (if it went bad) and use the mirror to bring it back to an immediate pre-failure state relatively quickly.
At this point I'd settle for mirroring one Xserve 500 to the other Xserve 500 which would give me a direct swap-out replacement - but I don't know if that's even technically possible. It has gotten complicated enough that I'm considering simply using the internal 500 as the data drive and depending on heavy back-ups for protection.
I'm looking for any advice, thoughts or technical tips eveyone might have to offer.
    TIA,
    =Tod

I must not have explained what I want to do clearly enough. The complication is that I want Xserve 1 to see Array 1 and 80% of Array 2 and Xserve 2 to see the remaining 20% of Array 2, but neither must be able to see the same section at the same time or very bad things can happen.
The only way I'm aware of to do this is to slice all of Array 2 into 20% slices and use LUN masking to make 4 slices visible to Xserve 1 and the 5th slice visible only to Xserve 2. I could partition Array 2 into 80% and 20% partitions and then unmount the 80 partition from the Xserve 2 and unmount the 20 from the Xserve 1 using disk utility. But the potential for something bad happening down the road exists unless I can find a way to suppress volumes from mounting. (I saw this hack: http://www.macgeekery.com/gspot/2005-12/hiding_partitions but need to investigate much further before actually trying it.)
Also the back-up unit is tied into the switch and therefore everything needs to run through the switch.
    Thanks,
    =Tod

  • Slippery problem: disappearing data from SMB shares

I have an Xserve running 10.5.8 serving as a Samba PDC for my school. Clients are using XP Pro SP2. Every user gets a home directory which is mounted at logon as a mapped drive, and a profile folder which contains the Desktop, My Documents, personal settings, etc.
Every so often a student comes to me because they lost data from their profile. It's a very hard thing to diagnose; often it's user error, but I think not always. Sometimes I can find the missing file(s) on the local drive of the Windows machine if I log on as the local admin, but again, not always. Today I had a student lose a 7-page term paper and he was beside himself. I couldn't find it on the client machine or anywhere on the server.
Has anyone encountered such a problem, or have any other suggestions for how/where to look?

Using OpenDNS is not an option for me for one reason alone: I need to use our internal Nameserver in order to resolve internal IP-Addresses.
    The solution under:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2134936&tstart=45
claims the issue is due to a reverse lookup bug in Windows DNS-Server.
To me that sound's a bit unlikely since half of mankind would then suffer from this issue...but still possible
I tried to put the IP Address of the SMB server (which also is the Active Directory Server) into /private/etc/hosts.
This alone did not help. I then realized with help of Google that OS X would not consult /privat/etc/hosts ( == /etc/hosts) by default when using DHCP.
I was under the assumption that /etc/hosts would always the evaluated in first place.
This made me look at /etc/resolv.conf. And I added "order hosts, bind" to it. Unfortunately I can't really tell if that is a supported directive by OS X. The resolv.conf man page is not explicit about it.
Since I'm using DHCP the file resolv.conf is updated by the OS whenever I change network config. And I do change it a lot...
I've written a quick sh script that I can call to add the order directive to the file.
    It's:
    #!/bin/sh
    mv /var/run/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf.new
echo order hosts, bind > /var/run/resolv.conf
    cat /etc/resolv.conf.new >> /etc/resolv.conf
While is can only be considered a dirty hack, I'm not sure it's the real solution to the problem.
After making the change connection seems to work better on the LAN. There are still situations though when fetching the directory content is very slow from Finder.
The hack is not an option at all when I'm on a VPN connection. I assume that this is due to the fact that /etc/resolv.conf might not be used for the VPN connection.
    I'm counting on 10.6.2

  • Error loading data from BW to BPC with standard package

    Hi experts,
A big part of our solution is pulling actuals from BW into BPC.  To do so we use the standard SAP package "Load InfoProvider Selections" which calls the process chain /CPMB/LOAD_INFOPROV_UI.
We have migrated our environment to BPC 10 and tried to run this process and are now getting the following error:
    “ Task name CONVERT:

was neither handled locally, nor declared in a RAISING clause

We have tested and this is happening with all data loading packages.  It appears as though it is expecting a "selection" parameter, but selections have definitely been made.  Has anyone encountered a similar issue or have any idea how to resolve it?

  • Recovering data from HD ????????

    Hi
My HD died on my G5 a few months back
I am wondering if it would be possible to recover data from it
    The situation is this
I had the idea that maybe if i start up my G5 whilst pressing T & connecting it up to my Macbook Pro via firewire 800 I might see the drives & be able to get files off there
I didnt see the drives on the desktop but if i opened Disk Uility both drives on the G5 Are there
They are both displayed as firewire drives each is named with another name underneath which is greyed out
I can click on each drive but in repair all options "Repair Permisions, Repair disc ETC are greyed out
I then tried to boot my Macbook pro with the installation disc & using disc utility from the installation CD with the same resut
Now if i can get this far I should be able to take it one step further & be able to get data from the HD or am i just grasping at straws
    Any Ideas please ??

    A. I would suggest never use CD or DVD.
    B. Setup a disk drive just for repairs.
    C. Get in the habit of using backup like SuperDuper
If you are running Leoaprd, use TimeMachine in addition to SuperDuper. SD makes an update that is bootable. And you want to insure it works.
Data Rescue II from Prosoft sounds like a good idea.
I would pick up a couple drives. A new boot drive, and one for backups, and to recover to. OWC has WD 640GB for $69.
Only use idential drives when creating a RAID, whether stripped or mirror. And yes, some tests treat the volumes rather than the physical mechanism.
SMART is not that helpful. When you tested in DW, it wrote to system log and shows how many spare blocks are left, used, which can be helpful.
TechTool Pro is 4.6.2 (5.0 is out also) and can scan a drive for weak/bad sectors.
You may need multiple backups. An original system and another of your data. When you used RAIDs you need to be doubly sure. And the best way to use maintenance utility is regularly, preventative medicine.

  • How do you configure a WCF-SQL adapter to write data from a SQL2012 "always on" database?

    Hi All,
I have a BizTalk environment. I have to write the data from BizTalk to the database which is configured using ALWAYS ON availability group.
I use WCF-SQL adapter to write the data. My question is this setup a supported?

    The answer is NO.
    Refer: Can
I use a BizTalk WCF-SQL send adapter with a SQL 2012 Always on Database?
    A snippet quoted below.
In summary (in order of preference):
Disable AlwaysOn Availability Groups / Mirroring on SQL server if you need to connect to this SQL server which has this enabled
Disable transactions and implement logic to be able to handle duplicates .
Disable transactions and handle the duplicates or lost messages with custom logic (e.g. Send twice and compare and implement error handling). You need to write your own DTC handling this which
    is probably very complicated.
Disable transactions and live with risk of duplicates or lost messages without handling duplicates.
Refer: SQL Server AlwaysOn feature does not support MSDTC transactions.

Sorry, your profile says iPhone 4. Best to be specific or have things up to date in order to avoid misunderstandings and prompt assistance.
In any case you are still using basic airplay. You need to enable mirroring and this cannot be done within an app.

  • Connecting xserve to xserve raid - done everything

    Hello,
I'm having trouble connecting my secondhand xserve to xserve raid.
    - xserve is running 10.8.5
    - i'm screen sharing the xserve
    - I have reset both the RAID controllers with paperclip
    - both fiber channels are connected
    - both controller cards are connected to the xserve via ethernet
    - half the hdds in both sides of raid show red light
    - it has been on for 24 hours now
Add system in RAID Admin doesn't propose anything, so I have manually entered the ip addresses from server.app>network pane.
If anybody has any ideas I would be thankful.
    Paul

    There are several possibilities.
First off, from your screen shot, both your RAID and your host are using the same IP addresses (169.254.192.90 and 169.254.87.107). That's not going to work. However, it's probably not your major problem... let's move down the stack.
Your interface on the host isn't connected/configured corrected - as noted by the Orange ball alongside the IP address. You need to fix that.
Second, the 169.254 addresses are somewhat variable, so just because the RAID had that address at one point in time that doesn't mean it still has that address - it could have changed. This may or may not be the case, depending on the link status of the host system.
If you choose to Add System within RAID Admin, it will search over the network to find nearby, available RAID systems to add. This is usually better than relying on dynamic IP addresses that might have changed since you last configured the array.
In either caase, focus on the link to your host. Check if you can at least ping the RAID. Use a tool such as tcpdump to see if you can determine the IP address of the RAID (hint: you should see it broadcasting on the network link).

  • Refreshing the Data from a embed view in a view container

    Hi everybody
I would like to know how can I do to refresh all data from a View with a view container the problem is:
that I have a window that has a view at the same time this has a view container.  The Main view brings the data of editable elements when I select one element of the main view the view container brings a list for that element (dependencies) but only the first time a choose an element loads the correct data, when I choose another one it brings the same old data and doesn't make the call for the wdDoInit() method.
    The question is:
How do I force the view to refresh all the data or call again the wdDoInit() method?
    Thank you for your help

    Aida,
Lets say you have two components C1 and C2 and you want method from C1 to be available in C2 then follow these steps:-
    1) Goto the Interface Controller of C1 and create a method there lets say doSomething
    2) Then goto C2. There you can see Used Web Dynpro Components --> Right click Add Used Component --> Give some name say C1Comp --> Click browse and select C1 --> Click Finish.
    3) Next goto Component Controller of C2 --> Properties --> Click Add and check if C1 is added. If not then select the checkbox and select OK.
    4) Now goto Implementation tab of C2 and lets say wdDoInit you can write following code:-
    wdThis.wdGetC1CompInterface().doSomething();

  • Issue when uploading Sales data from DSO to Cube.

    Dear All,
I have an issue when I am uploading Sales data from DSO to Cube.  I am using BI 7.0 and I have uploaded all sales document level data to my DSO.  Then I use a transformation rule to calculate the Sales Value when I am doing DTP to cube.  Cube has customer wise aggregation data.
In DSO I have NetPrice(KF) and Delivered_QTY(KF).  I do a simple multiplication routine in the transformation from DSO to Cube.
    RESULT =   SOURCE_FIELDS-NET_PRICE * SOURCE_FIELDS-DLV_QTY .
At the moment I use Active Table(With out Archive) on the DSO to get the data since this is my first load.
Issue is that the figure (Sales Value) in the cube is incorrect. I am getting a very large values which is impossible.
    Can someone please help me.
    Shanka

    Hi,
are you sure that cube has customer wise aggregated data..since it will always aggregate the values of the key figures for the same set of characters...
did you checked the values for the key figures as well and if even they are inflated or is the problem with this key figure only.
During the data load the records may aggregates first for the same values of characters and then multiplication will be happening....if that is the case then you may have to multiply the values before storing it in the data package and then let it aggregate....can be achived through start routine...
but first verify if other key figures are also having the same issue.
    Thanks
    Ajeet

  • How to create a report to bring all data from two different Info providers

    Hi All,
I have a peculier problem while creating a report. I have two custom info providers one DSO and another Cube. There are only two common fields between these two Info providers . I need to create a report such that the report displays all the values from DSO but user can have the selection option on one of the fields in the Cube.
    Here is an example
    DSO Contents:
    DocNum-     DocItem-     DocText-     Amount-      Quantity
    10000----     10----            ABC----          100----           10
    10001----     20----     DSN----     200----     10
    10005----     20----     DSN----     200----     10
    Z1003----     10----     CAN----     500----     1
    Cube Contents
    DocNum-     DocItem-     Date-----          InvoiceAmt
    10000----     10----     1/10/2009----         50
    10001----     20----      2/20/2009----        100
    10005----     20----      2/25/2009----        100
The report needs to be displayed as shown below when the user selects value for date from 1/10/2009 to 2/20/2009
    DocNum-     DocItem-     DocText-     Amount-      Quantity
    10000----     10----     ABC----     100----     10
    10001----     20----     DSN----     200----     10
I hope this was clear for you to understand. I would really appricate if any one can answers about how to resolve this problem. I cannot add the date filed to DSO and I also have Doc Num and Item as the user selection fields in the report.
Thank you all in advance and i would really appreciate for your suggestions.

    Hi chinna,
Two possible options, I can think of now, but both of them may be a compromise with performance.
    1. create an infoset and then a query on top of it, provided we have a one to one relation in both the targets. That is, the combination of doc and item number is not duplicate in either cube or ODS.
    2. Create a master data object of doc and item number and have date as an attribute. Load that from cube data and make date as navigational attr.
Use this navgntal attr for selection in your report.
Let us know, if you require any further info.

Can anyone please send me the complete steps for uploading of data from excel to BI??
Also tell me that when we use DSO or when we use infocube? and if we design query in query designer then we use info cube fields or DSO fields??
    Please respond.

    Hi,
there is no separate Tcode for 3.5 environment... but in RSA1 itself they give 3.X functionality also.. So, if you want to follow the 3.5 procedure you can go thru that... in the Infosource tab--> select your info area -->and right clcik it.. ->in that create INFOSOURCE 3.X.. for that just right clcik ur CUBE or DSO and --> Additional functions --> Update Rules.. and like that you can follow the same procedure which you done in 3.5..
and for data loading in BI 7.0 from fla file means
fisrt create one Cube or DSO with the same structure which you have in flatfile..
    and activate it..
->now comes to Datasource tab> create one Datasource here you need to select type of data for example.. select Transactional data --> and menntion your flatfile name in extraction tab- and file type and eneter your info object names in FIELDS tab --> and load preview data Activate it..
now select your datasource and create info package and schedule it.. now your data will loded in to PSA level...
    > and now comes to info provider select your cube.. and right clcik it.. and create transformations.,. and activate it..
    > and create DTP -- Activate it.. and Execute it..
1)Create datasource. Here u can set/check the Soucre System fields.
2)Create Transformation for that datasource. (no more update rules/transfer rules)
2.1) While creating transformation for DS it will ask you for data target name, so just assign where u want to update ur data.
    DataSource -> Transformation -> (DTP)-->Data Target
Now if you want to load data into data target from Source System Datasource:
    1) Create infopackage for that data source. If you are creating infopackage for new datasources, it will only allow you update upto PSA, all other options u can see as disabled.
2)Now Create DTP (Data Transfer Process) for that data source.
    3) NOw schdule the Infopackage, once the data is loaded to PSA, you can execute your DTP which will load data to data target.
Data Transfer Process (DTP) is now used to load data using the dataflow created by the Transformation. Here's how the DTP data load works:
    1) Load InfoPackage
    2) Data gets loaded into PSA (hence why PSA only is selected)
    3) DTP gets "executed"
    4) Data gets loaded from PSA into the data target once the DTP has executed
    1) Create a data source
    RSA1->Source Systems->FILE(File)->PC_FILE(Filesourcesystem)->Create Application Component(optional)-Create Data source
    2) Create the data provider
    3) Create Transformation
Right click on the data provider, choose 'create transformation' and choose your data source (give relevant data source and its type)
Just connect the relavant fields between your data source and data provider.
    4) Create DTP
Then Double click on the DTP node created under yous transformations. choose the extraction mode
    5) Load the data: there are 2 ways:
you can run the infopackage and DTP separately or create a process chain consisting of these infopackage and DTP and run.
Also check /people/sankar.kumar/blog/2006/10/11/loading-text-filestxt-into-bw-with-hex-option for hex option
