Mirroring folder on two Macs?

I have a Macbook Pro and iMac on the same network.  I'd like folderX on the MBP to be basically mirrored on the iMac.  If the MBP goes down or I need to send it in for repairs, I want the iMac to always have an updated version of folderX so I can continue working on this content from the iMac.  Then when I get the MBP back, I'd like the MBP to be updated with latest changes from the iMac and then have the MBP once again become the primary and ship folderX updates to the iMac.
I believe a Time Machine from the MBP to the iMac might work?  I do have a 2TB TimeCapsule and TM is in use on my MBP.  But can I only have 1 TM per computer?
Any other suggestions?

@benwiggy: Unfortunately, I discovered that goodsync resets your job options and renames the job if you add new folders/files.  I have no idea why someone would want to use such a program.  It was good before I found that option.  I'm now using bit torrent Sync.  Hopefully it doesn't have this limitation.
Sync authorizations are done over the Internet but does it send files through the Internet or across wifi?
Goodsync? Never heard of it. As I said, I use BitTorrent Sync and it works flawlessly. However, I wouldn't rename the folder whose contents I wanted to sync, though. If you need to rename or add/delete folders, then make sure they are in the container folder that you are syncing.
BT Sync sends data over your LAN, using Ethernet or WiFi. It doesn't go beyond your router, unless you configure it to do so, so that you can sync two Macs between different locations. There are no servers that your data gets stored on.

  • How do I share my iTunes music folder between two macs?

I am running an iMac and a Mac mini on a home network. I want to have both macs use the same music folder, so that I can rip, burn, update, and synch from either computer. My music folder is located on my Mac mini in the usual location.
I went to preferences/advanced on my iMac and changed the location of the music folder to point it to the folder on the mac mini. It then said it was updating the library. I still can't see all of the music that is my folder on the mini, from the iMac.
    What am I doing wrong?

No, it's simpler, epecially if iTunes manages your music for you (default).

do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the whole iTunes folder and all its subfolders and files intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • I want to use Time Capsule and/or Time Machine to Mirror Two Macs

I have a MacBook and a MacBook Pro. The MBP is work-related, but I have many creative projects that I have to do on both machines. I want to have both the MB and the MBP showing exactly the same files, and updating exactly the same files, in the same fashion, even when I am working primarily on just one of the two machines.
How can I use Time Machine or Time Capsule (or both together) to synchronize my two MacBooks, so neither one is showing outdated file/folder contents?

time machine is a backup tool and time capsule is the backup destination of choice for some users. you will not be able to mirror your two Macs using TM.
you will find a wealth of information on TM on [this_|http://web.me.com/pondini/TimeMachine/Home.html] site.
another good source: _*Time Machine 101*_
an suitable alternative to TM might be ChronoSync.

  • Mirror folder hierarchy

    Hi,
I want my CWS to mirror the source repository structure. I used the DB CWS example to start my development. When I created a crawler, I never see the option to "Mirror folder hierarchy" or "Import security...". Is there something that I should changed?
    Thanks

    Hi Syuroff,
In this case, you should use the root as /Volumes/Drive2/AUSST_Updates/updates/oobe and the url you need to specify should point to this location. For example if http://serverx:8080 points to /Volumes/Drive2/AUSST_Updates then you need to specify the url as http://serverx:8080/updates/oobe. If you allow directory browsing, then you can verify that the URL http://serverx:8080/updates/oobe points to /Volumes/Drive2/AUSST_Updates/updates/oobe. Once you ensure this, you have to run
    AdobeUpdateServerSetupToolCS5 --root="/Volumes/Drive2/AUSST_Updates/updates/oobe"
and select appropriate option to sync with Adobe Update Server. Once this step is completed, you will see two folders namely updates and webfeed created under /Volumes/Drive2/AUSST_Updates/updates/oobe location. Now you can run another command to generate the client config file:
    AdobeUpdateServerSetupTool2.0  --genclientconf="/Volumes/Drive2/AUSST_Updates/updates/oobe/config"
                                                           --root="/Volumes/Drive2/AUSST_Updates/updates/oobe"
                                                           --url="http://serverx:8080/updates/oobe"
As mentioned in my earlier post, this command will create a folder named config under /Volumes/Drive2/AUSST_Updates/updates/oobe/config
location. This folder will contain all the override files for both Mac and Windows.
Let me know if this answers your query.

  • Two Macs, two home directories

    Hi
We are five people in our family and we all use computers quite a lot. We have two Macs (one mini and an old Power Mac G4) and everybody is using his/her own user account. We also have an old PC which we don't use that much.
Our problem is that we have different environments in both Macs: applications, music, files, videos, pictures. You can't listen to same music in both Mac unless you copy the music to both Macs etc.
Is it possible to setup the Macs so that all the data is in one Mac (PowerMac), and the other Mac (mini) fetches the data (user accounts, homes, apps,...) from there?
Or, should I setup the PC as a server? How?
    Thanks
    Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Is it possible to setup the Macs so that all the data
is in one Mac (PowerMac), and the other Mac (mini)
fetches the data (user accounts, homes, apps,...)
    from there?
It is, I believe, possible to set up a "remote" home folder on another Mac using Netinfo Manager, but I haven't found any info on how to do that, other than that the process is described as "non-trivial."
Apple's OS X Server edition is a more direct approach, but it may be a little pricey/geeky for a small home network.
The other alternatives are mostly workarounds, & include such things as using file sharing & aliases to access remote folders or software sync apps to mirror the same data on multiple Macs.

  • IPhoto '09 version 8.1.2. can two macs have the same library?

I am running iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2 and have an iMac and a MacAir. How do I have one photo library, say on the iMac, that is then replicated onto the MacAir?

There are two ways to "sync" the two libraries.
#1 - with the two Macs connected download and use  SyncPhotos
    Here's how it works:
it compares the databases and/or album.xml files of Libraries A and B.
the files in A that are not in B are imported into B by copying the original files from A into B's Import folder.
it then does the same for B.
    metadata is not copied.
It can be used to just copy from A to B and not sync both ways if desired. It will work with 2 libraries that are different versions, i.e. between an iPhoto 08 and iPhoto 09 library.  This method does not require you to make the decision of which photos to sync.
NOTE:  this method does not sync keywords, titles, ranking or descriptions.
#2 -  download and use the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager to copy the Events in Library A that are not in LIbrary B to Library B.  Then select those Events in Library B that are not in A and copy to A.
This method requires you to make the determination which photos (Events) to copy between libraries.  It does copy all metadata, keywords, titles, etc. as well as Faces and Places.

  • How can I use the same domain.sites2 on two macs?

I know iWeb is no longer supported but I still find it ok to manage my web site.
I would like to work on the site from two macs. I thought I could just use the same Domain.sites2 on both macs but: if I move Domain.sites2 to dropbox folder, when I launch iWeb it does not know about it and creates a new empty Domain.sites2 in the Library/iWeb folder
I do not want to have to manually make a copy of Domain.sites2 to Dropbox and then to the other mac's Library every time I switch computer.

You may want to use :
    http://wyodor.byethost8.com/iwebsites/iWebSites.html
Select "Choose new folder" from the File menu to select the folder on Dropbox where your domain file is.
If that does not work, use:
    http://wyodor.byethost8.com/iwebsites/iWebDrop.zip
(Unzip the file and drop the domain file on top of it)
After that, you can open iWeb with your currently used domain file.

  • Two macs sharing an iTunes lib stored on a NAS?

I know there are many discussions/articles pointing to how I can move my iTunes library to an external drive, but my questions re- moving the library are:
    1. Can two macs share that library (as long as there are no concurrent users)?
    2. Can multiple users on the two macs share it (again, as long as they are not concurrently trying to access it)?
    3. Does the external drive have to be Mac OS X formatted?
    4. Can the "external" drive be a NAS?
FYI, I am using iTunes 8.0.2.

    Yes you can!
The way i did it was open a new iTunes account on in a folder on you NAS drive and open your itunes from there.
If you change the location of your iTunes files by preference, advance then change - your Library data base file is still on your mac, thus you cant open from anywhere on your network.
But if you create a new iTunes account on your NAS its all located on there and all you have to do is locate your iTunes library file from any computer with an iTunes program to open and use your complete iTunes account and what's stored on it. but remember for other people to open the account you have to log off yourself.
The good thing is i can open it from my iMac on my profile so when i sync my iPhone i get my ical, address book email etc and when my wife opens it from her MBP and from her profile she gets all her ical, address book mail etc and we get to shall all the music, movies and applications.
the only downside i can see is its a bit slow over NAS especially over WiFi but thats what you get for all your eggs in one basket.
any amount of people can use your account this way and as for formating you will find the software that comes with your NAS will format it in its own way usually FAT that way any computer can connect.
any problems give me a shout.

  • Share one iMovie folder between two user accounts

Hello,  I just consolidated two mac computers into one mac mini.  Now both my wife and I want to share the same actual computer (new mac mini) and share media folders so we are not duplicating photo imports and movies.  I figured out how to map the iTunes library and the iPhoto library to a shared folder, but cannot get how to map the 'movie' folder to a single folder for both accounts.  This would be needed so we can share and work on the same iMovie projects between the two accounts.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

On my Mac Pro I moved the entire library to "Macintosh HD/Shared/iTunes". Changed the Folder location in iTunes Preferences->Advanced->General to point to that location. Then in each user change the Music/iTunes folder to be an alias or link pointing to the Shared/iTunes folder. You will likely need to change the permissions on that folder to give everyone the ability to read and write. Do that via "Get Info" on the iTunes folder using Finder. I'd suggest backing everything up before you do this.

  • Sharing between two macs with one user account?

Is it possible to connect two macs to share documents and music if they are both logged into the same user account?
I recently bought a Mac Mini and when setting it up, I transferred everything from my Macbook Pro to it, including my user profile which I now also use on the Mini.
Since setting up the Mini, I've been using both machines so the content on both is no longer identical. There have been occassions where I have wanted to transfer something from the MBP to the Mini or vice-versa over wi-fi and have encountered problems. I suspect this is because I am using the same user account and they get confused.
I don't need the two macs to be identical in their content, however there are times when I want to share or quickly transfer music, documents or Garageband files from one to another. Would I be better off setting up different profiles for the Mini and the MBP to achieve this? Is there a better way to do what I'm trying to do?

Could you please explain, what kind of problems exactly you encountered? Error messages? Corrupted files? And why do you think the problem is caused by the same user profiles?
Like markwmsn I have no problem with sharing using the same account name on all my macs. Only since upgrading to Mt. Lion I usually use AirDrop to send single files. That saves the trouble to copy the files to a public folder.
Do both your macs support Air Drop?

  • Sharing iphoto library on two macs?

    Hi Folks,
I have two macs in the house. One a mini linked to a tv and an iMac. The iMac holds my primary iPhoto Library. What I would like to do is share the same library with the mini mac, without having to use the sharing option. Can I place it on an external drive and link both macs to that library? I am running 10.5 if that makes any difference. Thanks, Andrew.

    Andrew
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a dmg.
(Some people have had success putting the library in the Users/ Shared folder. If you do this make sure the file permissions are set to allow read/write access to everyone.)
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

I have two Macs: an MBA and the new iMac.  Is there a way to have iTunes and all the content in it identical on both machines?

Yes you can copy the content to your new machine and use Home Sharing to keep the content identical
Connect the two machines via an ethernet cable it is 3 times faster than Wifi. Turn wifi off on one machine to enforce ethernet connection
In System Preferences, Sharing turn on File Sharing
    Then
Copy the music/itunes folder from the Macbook pro to the music/ folder on the imac
Both machines should now have the same library
    Disconnect H the ethernet cable
Set up Home Sharing and under Settings at the bottom of the Home Sharing page. Select to transfer new purchases.
Do the same on the other machine.
Then when you r machines are connected by wifi and each time you start itunes it will transfer your new purchases

  • How to sync two iTunes libraries between two Macs?

I have two macs (Mavericks) plus the latest version of iTunes. What I want to do is to mirror any change I do on one library to the other iTunes library using Google Drive (iTunes Library Mac 1 to iTunes Library Mac 2 and vice versa).
I installed Google Drive on both of my Macs. It works pretty well at mirroring changes in .mp3 files names changes I do (i.e. My_Song.mp3 to MY_SONG.mp3), new files I add or files I delete...
But there are two things I can't sync right now. Playlists and files info attributes (i.e. when I change the soundtrack Genre of one of my soundtrack it doesn't sync with the same soundtrack on my other mac).
I know I can export+import playlist but I don't know how to actually sync playlists using Google Drive. iTunes has a special way of "storing" playlists. What I want is, for example, I create/modify a playlist on my Mac1 and it sync to Mac2 via Google sync.
So, how can I make my playlists + any changes I make on my soundtracks (not the mp3 files) sync between my Macs using Google Drive?
    Thank you.

Apple's attempt at doing this is Home Sharing but that's more of a track by track basis, not the whole library.  The only way you will get it to automatically "sync" is to share a common set of library files with both computers (note, only one computer can open a library file at a time).

  • Problems using TimeMachine from two Macs to IOMega Home Media Drive

    Hi,
This has been driving me crazy for a couple of weeks now, so I'm hoping that someone here can point me in the right direction.
I have a PPC G5 and my wife uses an iMac. I recently bought an IOMega Home Media Drive and wanted to use it with TimeMachine. I set up the G5 and got that working, but when I tried to add my wife's iMac I've had nothing but problems.
I tried resetting the IOMega back to factory defaults, deleting and then re-creating the backups folder, using usernames and passwords or a guest account, and nothing seems to work. I occasionally do something that breaks it on the G5 (running 10.5.8) but I have been able, for the most part, to get it working again, but it's never worked from my wife's iMac (running 10.6.2).
I even tried creating the sparsebundles by hand and copying them in which seemed to work on the G5 but not on the iMac. I thought that the problem might be trying to back up two systems to the same share, but I'm not sure how to split them. Is there a way to create separate backup shares on the IOMega (which seems to connect using AFP even though I've seen references to SMB in some of the forums) so that each system would use its own? Is there a general problem when trying to back up two Macs to the same network share?
The error that I tend to get is that the "backup volume is read only". On the iMac the current error I'm getting, after creating the hostname.sparsebundle image (oddly enough when TimeMachine tried creating it yesterday it dropped the MAC address...not sure why), is: "/Volumes/backups-1/hostname.sparsebundle could not be created (error 45)."
Any help would be greatly appreciated, this has been very frustrating.
    Thanks,
    Rob

    Hi,
You don't want to hear this, but Time Machine does not back up to network drives, except Time Capsules or a shared drive on another Mac running Leopard or Snow Leopard on the same local network. It will often back-up to a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme, but even that is, technically, unsupported, and may require running a special Terminal command to make it work.
    Here's the official word: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
You may find some hardware or "hacks" that might make it work, in some cases, to a degree. But use them at your own risk.
First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless.
No guarantees, of course, but this might help: https://iomega-na-en.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/iomegana_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=22012&p_created=1246919828&p_sid=KBbtj nNj&p_accessibility=&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PWRmbHQmcF9 ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTEwLDEwJnBfcHJvZHM9MTAzMSwxMDQzJnBfY2F0cz0mcF9wdj0yLjE wNDMmcF9jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9ubCZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF9 0ZXh0PXRpbWUgbWFjaGluZQ**&p_li=&ptopview=1
