Mirroring iTunes for sound/music archive?

Hi,
I'm currently working in a postproduction company for a German News Television station. We have recently changed to Final Cut.
We'd like to us iTunes for our music archive and this is where the problem starts:
Basically we'd like to be able to have a shared library folder for all of our 5 editing suites from which we can work at the same time. The folder would of course be on a network drive. This is important, as we'd like to have the same library accessible to everyone and being updated instantly whenever someone adds music to it.
Why we can’t just use the ‘shared music’ – option: We need to be able to feed the Information with tags manually that aren’t provided automatically by iTunes and we would like to have ONE library rather then 5 different ones. Plus only one of the editing suites is connected to the Internet, which is necessary for automatically downloading ID3-Tags.
We were thinking about external FireWire Harddrives which are synced every other week, which then is of course more work and we'd have to tell iTunes every time that new music has been added to the library folder.
It would be fantastic if anyone knows a way how to make this happen, a way to work around it or any another feasible solution.
Bye,
Sandro

You can have two iTunes libraries on your computer, or more if you wish. I have four on mine for various purposes, all in the same Mac OS X user account (you can also have multiple Mac OS X user accounts, each which its own iTunes library).
To create a new iTunes library, see:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589
Navigate to wherever you wish to create the new library (I'd suggest having a separate folder for it so that all the files are contained) and click the Create Library button. That will create a new, empty iTunes library. You can then use that library for your background music and sound effects. To switch back and forth between libraries, just again launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click the Choose Library button, and select the appropriate library.
BTW, are you familiar with SoundByte? It's software that simulates the functionality of the cartridge players used in many radio stations. I don't know if that would be of interest to you, but I thought I'd mention it.
Regards.

  • How to unset the 'use itunes for internet music playback' option

In Advanced Preferences, I mistakenly clicked the SET button for "Use itunes for internet music playback". Since then, I have closed and opened itunes, so it appears the preference has been saved (the field is no longer highlighted)
I cannot find any way to unset this option. I want to unset this option. Could someone please tell me how?

I don't think that deleting the plist file will help.
Clicking that button sets the handler for a bunch of file types. You can't just unset it, you need to set the handler to something other than iTunes. Normally audio and video are handled by the Quicktime Plugin. You can restore that behavior in System Preferences:
System Preferences -> QuickTime (in the Internet and Network set) -> Advanced -> Mime Settings...
You may have other plugins or programs you want to use for some formats (like .wmv or .avi). Those programs should be able to reclaim the file and MIME types from their preferences.

  • Unsetting Option -- Use iTunes for Internet Music Playback

In the advanced pane of the iTunes Systems Preferences, there is an Option -- "Use iTunes for Internet Music Playback". You can click on the SET button to use this feature.
But how do you UNSET it? I no longer want to use ITunes for Internet Music Playback.
I am running iTunes 7.02 and Tiger 10.4.8.

  • ITunes for classical music

iTunes' structures are for "songs" (one song, one track). A CD of classical music contains one or more "works", each consisting of one or more "movements" (usually one track, one movement). How can I store and manage classical music with iTunes, or are there any alternative applications?

Obviously, different users will have different approaches to this problem.
I too am an avid fan of classical music (my iTunes library is over 90% classical). I'm not a great fan of a multiplicity of playlists, though, so I adopt a different approach. I have separate genres for different types of musical pieces — Chamber, Instrumental, Vocal, Operatic and so on. I then have one enclosing folder in my Source list (I call it Classical Categories), within which I have a number of smart playlists (Chamber Music, Concerto, Instrumental, Orchestral, Symphonic). I view these smart playlists as lists grouped with artwork and sort these lists by composer. This has the effect of neatly dealing with those situations where the original CD contains works by different composers, since it separates these out and displays them separately. CDs devoted to music by a single composer still remain grouped as a single item, but viewing as a list grouped with artwork helps make each CD stand out from its neighbours and aids clarity.
Using the search field within any of my smart playlists gives me instant access, for example, to all symphonies or all concertos (or whatever) by any single composer. In many ways, indeed, iTunes has proved to be a better way to access music in my library than was ever possible with physical CDs on shelves — I've lost track of the number of times I've found it frustratingly difficult to find a particular piece of music 'in the old days' because it was part of a CD which I'd filed under a different composer's name because music by that composer was what I bought the CD for originally.
As I say, we'll all find different solutions to the problem of using iTunes for classical music, but I'm happy with mine. What would be wonderfully helpful would be for Apple to introduce into iTunes the grouping by 'Work' which they use in the iTunes Store. I also wish they'd drop the use of that word 'song', which is so frustratingly inappropriate in a classical context, and replace it with 'track'. I've submitted feedback about these points on numerous occasions. Perhaps Apple will address the needs of classical collectors at some time in the future.

  • TS1363 Is there any alternative to iTunes for copying music onto an iPod? I am sick to the back teeth of Apple and I am really getting annoyed at having to uninstall and reinstall iTunes every few weeks.

I have iTunes on 2 PCs, one running Windows 7 pro, the other running Windows 8. I also have 2 iPods which show up in Windows but not iTunes. Every time this happens I have to delete and download iTunes again, losing my library (nearly 10,000 tracks) in the process. I have had enough of Apple and their crap software as this problem has happened to me on previous computers as well and I think iTunes is crap. Is there some alternative I can use instead of iTunes to put music on my iPods?

If you have an iPod touch you could probably use DropBox.

  • Using non AAC Formats for 'Futureproof' music archive

My music collection is currently in lossy AAC format on my Imac with 80Gb hard drive. I would like to re-rip my c.d.s to a loseless format for future proofing and store on a new hard drive with such low price / gig. The idea would be to run a script converting them to AAC for current Imac / Ipod combo, but in future may script convert to Flac and or OGG or even WMA if I ever (doubtfully) leave the Apple fold.
Has anybody done similar here? Any advice? Flac or WAV, can I store all the useful metadata against WAV files or is this held in iTunes database files? Does anybody know of such scripts of batch conversions?

I can't tell you what to do, but I can tell you my experiences.
My library still had some albums ripped with iTunes 1.0, at 128 kbps MP3.
Then there were several CDs, ripped at 192 kbps MP3 and 128 kbps AAC.
I recently replaced the HD of my Mac for a larger and faster one, so plenty of room and time to standardize my collection.
I re-ripped my entire CD collection (modest, I think, about 60 discs) in Apple Lossless, stored it for archival purposes on an external HD and converted the whole lot to AAC 320 kbps.
At re-ripping, iTunes will ask if it's OK to replace the existing files. There the first problem arose. It will only do so if the names it gets from Gracenote on inserting the CD, exactly matches those of the library.
Looking on Doug's site, I found Copy Track Info to CD Tracks.
Perfect. All artwork and lyrics eventually were automatically copied to the re-ripped tracks. Also the Date Added, Ratings and Play Counts were preserved.
    Cool!
After archiving all lossless files to an external HD, I converted them to AAC and deleted the Lossless files from my internal drive.
As for FLAC. iTunes doesn't support that format and I can't tell you if and how the metadata is stored (just don't know). The same applies to OGG.
WAV doesn't support tagging and you can't add artwork or lyrics to it (options are greyed out)
AIFF (also uncompressed like WAV) officially doesn't support tagging either, but iTunes attaches artwork to the file (as can seen by the increasing file size).
    Hope this helps.

  • Air Express - can it be used outside of iTunes for sound out of Safari?

I have an Air Express connected to a Wave radio that works great for iTunes music library and internet radio through iTunes. I'd like to be able to play sound through it from web pages while in Safari. Is there any way to broadcast sound through my radio other than through iTunes??

You can make it happen with the shareware Airfoil.

  • No speaker menu in iTunes for streaming music through Airport Express

    I have the following setup:
I connect through the Internet using a Zyxel 660-R61 router acting as DHCP server. Next in line is an Airport Extreme running in bridge mode taking care of wireless Internet access. I have then added an Airport Express in client mode to the wireless network in order to stream music to my stereo. Although both Airports look "happy" (green lights) no speaker menu shows up in iTunes. I have done all types of resets etc. I suspect the problem lies in the ADSL router somehow. Anybody out there with ideas?

I'm sure that you have done this already, but if not...
Open the AirPort Admin Utility, located in /Applications/Utilities.
Click Music in the toolbar, and select the Enable AirTunes checkbox.
Enter an iTunes speaker name and password. This is the name displayed in the pop-up menu at the bottom of the iTunes window.

  • ITunes 12.1 has static-y music, the 64 bit iTunes for old video drivers did NOT fix

Playing music on my iTunes has all of a sudden become static-y as of the 12.1 update, I looked for a while and found the "64 bit iTunes for older video drivers" and found that it fixed the problem for most people, I installed it and tried playing music, it's still static-y, I've changed my audio bitrate playback and bits per sample and nothing has changed, does anyone have a fix?

Did you see if changing the Play Audio Using select in Edit > Preferences > Playback to "Direct Sound" resolves the issue?  Otherwise you may want to consider rolling back to 12.0 and waiting until a future release is shown to resolve the playback issues in 12.1.  See Turingtest2's notes on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for steps needed to completely remove all installed iTunes components, and for links to the 12.0 installers.

  • ITunes for Windows freezes when importing a library. I have a large but not huge library of mostly iTunes purchased music on two authorized computers and would like to sync the files, export the library as a playlist, and import it on the other computer.

I am running iTunes for Windows 10.2.2 on Windows 7 Home. I have my iTunes library on both this computer and another authorized machine running Windows 7 Professional. I have a large but not enormous library, as I'm one of those people who doesn't pirate, use torrents, borrow from a dozen friends, or whatever other shades of gray you might imagine. It's mostly iTunes purchases with my old CD collection imported. I have started using the following technique to sync my libraries between my two authorized computers, an ability which you can probably all agree should one day be added to iTunes -- that would be different from Home Sharing, because the music would be stored locally and thus available on the road. With the added benefit of the entire library being backed up on the other machine in real-time. Anyway, when I switch from my desktop to laptop and vice versa, I use the following technique:
Connect both machines to the home network. One machine is the "Active" machine, which has most recently been used for iTunes media, purchases, ratings, etc.
On the "Active" machine, File-->Library-->Export. Save the file as "Library.xml" on the shared drive of the other machine.
Right-click "Library.xml" where it's been saved, and open another file that has two lines in it: The root path of the iTunes library on one machine and the root path of the iTunes library on the other machine.
Do a find/replace all in Notepad to make the library XML file point to where the files will be saved on the "Inactive" machine.
Run Microsoft SyncToy to synchronize the files between both music libraries; the most recent files win. This avoids copying the entire multi-gigabyte library over the network.
Open iTunes on the "Inactive" machine.
Go to Music, Select All, Delete. Keep files.
Do the same for Movies, Music Videos.
Go down to Playlists, select the top one, hold down the delete button until they're all gone.
File-->Library-->Import Playlist. Choose the "Library.xml" file you saved.
First a status bar comes up that says, "Importing library." It has the continually-scrolling progress bar, not the one that starts on the left and steadily creeps right. Then after about 30 seconds, that clears out. Wait. Typically a few minutes. Eventually a status bar will pop up saying something like, "Evaluating gapless playback information," or something like that.
The "Inactive" computer is now the "Active" computer. I can now play my library, it has all my playlists and metadata from the other machine.
Delete all the duplicate playlists named "Music," "Genius," "Purchased," and "iTunes DJ."
Well, I just upgraded to iTunes 10.2.2 a few days ago and tried to do this again like I've done it dozens of times before. Now, iTunes just goes unresponsive after the library import. It got through the "Importing library" bar to the long wait and stopped. I can still multiprocess and use other programs, but iTunes is hovering back there not responding to clicks. Task Manager doesn't seem to think iTunes is using my CPU, and I don't see my hard drive rattling. Any thoughts on why iTunes might hang up when importing a large library?
... Also, please help lobby Apple to come up with a network sync tool built into iTunes for a user with multiple authorized computers. Something different than Home Sharing so I can pull my laptop off the network and still have the synced library with me. And all my metadata changes will sync. The technique I use seems a little kludgey, don't you think?

iTunes isn't an editor. You need an app that's intended for editing audio files, like Adobe Audition (http://www.adobe.com/products/audition.html) or Audacity (free in the App Store).

If Other (the yellow bar) is too big something is corrupted.  The only solution (that I know of) is to restore from your most recent backup using iTunes (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766).

  • How do I stop iTunes from re-altering my sorting info for classical music?

Hi there. Hope someone can help. This is really irritating me now.
I have a lot of classical music in my iTunes library. Since very early on I have taken the decision to alter the Artist name in the sort field to the name of the composer rather than the performer as the listing of artists in classical music is so inconsistent (sometimes it's the orchestra, or the orchestra & conductor, or just the conductor, or the soloists, or it changes from track to track). I have kept the performer's details in the Comments box.
This has been absolutely fine until the last year or so, when I have noticed that music that I have downloaded from the iTunes store automatically reverts to the original sorting information even though I've changed it. So, for instance, I will have changed "Alfred Brendel" to "Mozart" as the Artist for a Mozart piano sonata. And even though I have changed the Artist, the Album Artist, the Sort Artist and the Sort Album Artist ALL to Mozart and synced that successfully to my iPhone, the next time that I launch iTunes or turn on my iPhone it will all mysteriously have reverted to the original sorting information. And I don't want that for classical music - fine for rock, pop etc., but classical music has a different set of priorities. I'm guessing this has something to do with iCloud, but how do I stop it happening? It is really tedious to keep altering these things. And some bizarre anomalies have appeared, such as some early Baroque music (Monteverdi) being labelled by iTunes as Electronic in the genre box!! Which it clearly isn't! But the same thing happens - I change the genre, but it changes back! Surely once I sort something it should stay sorted!
I'm sure there's a fantastically obvious explanation for this, and I apologise for missing it. But I don't know what to do . I have iTunes 11.3.1 and am running OS 10.9.4 (Mavericks).
    Many thanks.

Yes, others are seeing this. Something in purchased media (I am pretty sure this has only happened with purchased media) is periodically checking back with the iTunes Store and resetting the tags in the iTunes library file but not in the actual media files (metadata are stored in both).  I haven't seen a truly systematic diagnosis of the issue (I use an old iTunes and have no iTunes account so I can't test anything myself).  There are temporary workarounds but tags will still revert after a time.
2014 discussion about edited tags for Store purchases reverting to originals - https://discussions.apple.com/message/26077896#26077896 - edited tags are still present in the media file but revert to the originals in the iTunes library file.  Workaround is to refresh tags so media file tags are re-read and used in library file.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/26193185#26193185
https://discussions.apple.com/message/26335620#26335620 - user ended up rebuilding iTunes library from scratch
Send feedback to Apple about this so they know it is an issue they need to investigate:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
Don't expect an immediate solution but maybe the next time they update the software it may be resolved.
