Mirroring or cloning many computers on a network?

Good morning,
I am running a little internet café consisting of four eMacs. Internet billing and authentication is handled by Sputnik (www.sputnik.com) using prepaid cards. It is not totally ideal for shared public computers as it is designed for people using their own computers on a Wi-Fi hotspot but it works.
Anyway, my major issue is keeping the computers clean and up to date.
At present, my main iMac is connected to both our in-house network (wireless) as well as the public hotspot (ethernet) so I'm effectively on both networks at once.
I don't like this as my iMac is a "bridge" between the public network and our office network which could cause some issues.
The reason I need to do this is that the public network and our office network are on different subnets and I am using Remote Desktop to reset the four eMacs each night (by overwriting the user folder with the original files from the "clean" setup).
This is not also perfect and this is the reason for my query here is that I really need a better solution because I also need to be able to upgrade the system software on these computers from time-to-time as well as sometimes change settings globally across all four computers.
Until now I have setup one computer then cloned it using CarbonCopy Cloner and copied it to each of the other three. This does not work brilliantly and takes a long time. Plus I need to be in the café to do it with a Firewire drive.
Is there a better way to synchronise multiple computers on a network so they're all the same?
I hope I'm making sense here.
Many thanks,
Galen

Hi, Galen,
There are a number of possible options, depending on how much automation you wish to achieve and how much you're willing to spend to get it.
The expensive way (relatively speaking) would be to set up a Mac OS X server system and remote boot the eMacs from the server. You could then set up a single master image that the systems would boot from, guaranteeing that they'd be identical and allowing you to have to update only one system. It also guarantees that your clients can't mess up the systems, since the master image is locked and can't be changed by the user, so you just reboot the system to get back to a clean boot. Clearly that's more costly than other solutions might be, since you'd have to come up with a server system (pretty much anything with a 100BaseT Ethernet port, 1GB of RAM and a reasonable hard drive would probably be fine) and a 10-user copy of Mac OS X Server ($499.00 US).
A second option might be to use Mike Bombich's NetRestore to create and automate the distribution of a master disk image. Rsync is also a possibility. Both solutions would require that the systems be booted from another volume to allow the main volume to be reimaged.
A third option might be to use a utility such as Faronics' Deep Freeze to lock down the systems to a given configuration, restoring them to the master config on a restart, then use ARD to unlock the systems, install the updates, and relock them, something which can be scheduled if you wish.
Hope this helps.

  • How can I look for number of computers on a network

Hello I have a client and server program.
I use port 12340 for communication.
I use the program at a network with more computers.
1 computer has the client program running and some of the other computers
    have the server program running.
Is there a java function to see how many computers at the network have the server
    program running?
I want to have a list with ip addresses of every computer with the server program or with port 12340 open.

I have a client program on the computer and and on others the server.
If I do this in my command line for example
    10.20.30.40 12340 "test"
then if the computer with this ipaddress sends something back.
Now the program runs on several computers with a demo program in it.
But at the end the program is going to run on an embedded machine.
Than I make a direct connection between the computer and the embedded machine.
I make the program for people who never works with computers.
When the person starts the program he has to push a button and that the program find
the machine but it can be every time an other ipaddress and the person doesn't know this address.
For example the machine listens to port 12340 and the program on the computer knows this.
The computer doesn't know the ipaddress.
But knows that if he sends this for example he receives test ok it is the machine.
    10.20.30.40 12340 "test"
Do I have to look for all possible addresses or is there a better more simple way.
I can't change the server side.

  • How many computers can take wireless internet from a MBP?

Hello guys, my MBP takes the internet wiredly. Temporarily there's no router in place and my flatmates don't have internet so I've enabled the internet sharing (System Preferences>Sharing>Internet) and have seen that one computer at a single time has connected to mine. I'm just wondering now how many computers can connect, wirelessly, simultaneously to a MBP. Does anyone know?
    Thank you.
MBP 15in 2.33GHz.   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   other 200+ posts with the old Discussion Forums (now lost)

I am not quite sure I understand your question, but I
think the answer you are looking for is ten.
Generally, any wireless hot spot can support up to
ten connections at a time. I am not sure, but I don't
think it matters if its a dedicated wi-fi router or a
computer that's sharing a networked connection.
A limit of 10 is impossible as a general rule, because of all the places around the world that serve more than 10 customers with wifi from a single, generic brand access point behind the counter.
I see from Apple's specs that the little AirPort Express does have a limit of 10, but the AirPort Extreme stations support up to 50 users. Other brands support even more.
There is probably a low limit on the number of users that can be connected to a computer sharing Internet, and it very well could be 10 in that specific case. Apple's documentation doesn't say.

  • How do I kow how many computers are sharing my airport?

Is there a way to know (from my mac) how many computers are connected and when? I mean how many are using the internet connection, via airport, at a given time? Thanks.. Seba

This might depend a bit on the configuration of your airport network.
I just bought a TimeCapsule, and was pleased to find that using Airport Utility 5.3.2, it actually tells you how many wireless clients are connected. To find that, I selected the TC in the utility, and then selected manual setup, and on the Summary tab, right below Channel, the number of Wireless Clients is listed.
This also seems to work the same with my older (not 802.11n) Airport Extreme base station (AEBS), but might not work with older airport devices.

  • Difference between Database Mirroring and Cloning?

    Hi,
Can anybody tell me the exact difference between Database Mirrorring and cloning?
Is database mirroring and multiplexing same?
    Thanks
    Rajesh

cannot be kept current automatically with the source database It is possible using manually scripted code to automatically update a cloned database to in effect build your own mirrowing process. This is basically a description of home grown Data Guard and is how many sites maintained a ready to use backup prior to Oracle introducing Data Guard.
The best way to create a clone database today is probably to use the rman duplicate command.
The clone could be the base for use with a mirrowing process you are setting up or used for other purposes such as providing a consistent frozen snapshot of production for special reporting. It could become the unit test or system test environment or perhaps be used for diaster recovery purposes.
A clone is a one-time event. Mirrowing is an ongoing process.

  • We have a PC with iTunes that needs the hard drive reformatted. Right now, it can't connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my music to a thumb drive, then re-load when the computer is reformatted?

We have a Windows XP desktop with iTunes for windows. The hard drive needs to be reformatted. Right now, the computer will not connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my iTunes songs to a thumbdrive, then re-load after reformatting?  How do I do it?

Copy the entire iTunes folder out to the drive. If it is too big to go as one copy stuff over to another computer in batches. It is important to have not only the media but the library file in order to properly restore your library.
See also this User Tip. Assuming the machine won't connect to the internet you could download the SyncToy installer on another machine and then transfer it with the thumb drive. If it will connect to the net don't forget to deauthorize the machine before reformatting the hard drive.

  • Can I share one iTunes Library with multiple computers on a network?

Can I share one iTunes Library with multiple computers on a network?
note: one library universally shared, not Home Sharing (one library each, shared to each.)
I want to share one library stores on my server and access it through various local computers. When I buy a song from a computer (non-server), I want it to be added to the library (stored on server). I want it to auto copy to my server, for organization. I want to be able to sync my phone from any computer.
Most of this I can do, if i figure out how to use one universal library for all my computers.
Any ideas how I can do this?

    eyeinit,
You can authorize your iTunes account on up to 5 computers at a time.
However, purchased music is downloaded to the first machine to download it, but these articles have more information on moving your music between authorized computers:

This one is for moving all your music using an iPod as a storage drive

  • I'm a school tech coordinator. Many computers and many iPads. How many Apple IDs can I have per device, and how many devices can have the same Apple ID? To make my life easier, I'd like 200 devices to all use the same Apple ID.

I'm a school tech coordinator. I have many computers and many iPads. I apologize if there is a some place that has all the rules governing the use of Apple IDs. I looked, and I even tried to get the answers from multiple Apple rep's. I couldn't find the answers.
How many Apple IDs can I have per device?
I want to use the same computer to sync and backup many iOS devices. The iOS devices would be associated with different Apple IDs.
I may load apps under a school Apple ID and have users load their own apps under thier own ID.
How many devices can have the same Apple ID?
Can I use the same Apple ID on all the computers in a lab?
Can I use the same Apple ID on all iPads for a particular grade level?
Are the rules different for iOS devices and computers?
I know that there are limits on "authorize" and "de-authorize" and how frequently those things can be done.
Recently I heard that for the life of an iOS device, it can only be associated with five Apple IDs. That is not good for a school giving iPads to students in a 1:1
To make my life easier, I'd like 200 devices to all use the same Apple ID.

  • How many computers can I install Photoshop (and other adobe programs on)?

Hi. I was wondering how many computers I can install a purchased version of Photoshop onto (or other Adobe products)? Can I install one copy onto two systems I own, eg: my desktop and laptop? Or only one total? Can I buy additional licenses for that version if needed? What about with older products Eg: Photoshop 4 Extended, or another?
    Thank you.

I'll reply to my own post witht his for anyone else who wants it. i jsut chedked out Photoshop 5's system requirem
ents and just found out yes there are two licenses or more - if you pay.

Anyone want to add anything: Please do.
I would like to say that being able to add software onto 2 systems, especially software for productivity and fun, is highly important. This is something Adobe needs to keep doing and a lot of other companies too. Plus it is something some companies need to look into if they can set up the system right. This is one reason I am planning on buying one companies software for music production over the other (which also requires the usb key/lock or company #2's product doesn't work). It is a good selling point for someone like me with a desktop and laptop, cost is a factor with double programs.

  • How many computers can I install Photoshop Elements 12 on?

How many computers can I install Photoshop Elements 12 on?

No, if you mean can you copy the installed version over. That never works because PSE is a highly complex program that strews stuff all over your hard drive and you can never hope to find all the bits and bobs. You should deactivate it on the computer you no  longer need, then install from scratch on the new machine.
