Miserable in a crowd?

Last night I went to a college football game with about 75,000 others. I might as well have left my IP at home for all the good it did. The stadium featured free wifi and I also had a solid 3G signal with most if not all the bars visible.
Still, I was NOT able to make any phone calls nor was I able to do any internet surfing (either with the wifi or 3G). I'm suspecting there were just too many ATT phones in the group in the active mode. My brother who was sitting next to me was able to send/receive text messages with his 3G S, but I wasn't able to connect until I got about 2 miles away from the stadium. I did do one reboot to see if that would make a difference. Now I understand why the San Francisco people hate ATT and the IP.

I understand about ATT. However, I saw many people around me using their cellphones throughout/and around me throughout the game. I have no idea as to which carriers they were using, but I'm guessing Verizon, et al with the ATT people out of luck.
Unbelievable and sad really IMO that so many people were using their cell phone during a FOOTBALL game. And you are correct, you don't know which carriers they were using which may have been AT&T. Each cell tower with EVERY carrier has a limit in regards to the number of cell phones that can place or receive calls, the same for SMS/MMS, and for internet access at the same time. If the so many people around you that were using their cell phones if they were actually using it to exchange SMS/MMS and for internet access (instead of just trying to do so at the time) are Verizon subscribers, then there weren't many Verizon subscribers out of the 75,000 people at the game that were doing so at the same time. *Each cell tower with EVERY carrier has a limit in regards to the number of cell phones that can place or receive calls, the same for SMS/MMS, and for internet access at the same time.* How do you know all these people around you at a FOOTBALL game of all things (un-believable and sad) were actually using their phone - for a call, actually exchanging SMS/MMS, or actually accessing the internet or were they just trying to?
Re wifi, I really didn't expect to be able to access it with that many people around so I don't have any complaints there other than to mention it was available.
The very same applies to the number of cell phone towers available with a particular carrier at a particular location and the number of people with the same carrier who are actively trying to place a call or that have received a call, are exchanging SMS/MMS, or actively accessing the internet. There is a limit for the number of subscribers that can do the same when connected to a particular tower - all have limits with EVERY carrier. Out of 75,000 people at a FOOTBALL game trying to exchange SMS/MMS and access the internet that can't keep from doing this for a few hours and enjoy/pay attention to the game that is in front of them, apparently a large percentage are AT&T subscribers.
Unless AT&T provides temporary towers during each game at that location or permanent towers around the football stadium for only 5 or 6 home games a year, if there are a large number of AT&T subscribers out of 75,000 actively using and trying to use their iPhone or any cell phone during a football game, there will be problems. The very same applies to Verizon, to Sprint, and to T-Mobile.

  • Miserable experience with replacement LG Fathom, that replaced defective TP2

    Freezes
    It does freeze.
    Alarms don't work right
I use the alarms & those didn't work right. I had set 1 for 9:30 pm & 1 for 10 pm,  The 10 pm one got up to 12 alarms--even though only 1 was set. Tech support wanted me to do a hard reboot but wasn't very thrilled about that as I would then have to reinstall software & re-set up linking & set up email all over again.
After awhile I turned off the alarms. But they still went off. I did check--they were turned off. & then it got so the 9:30 one would freeze the whole phone. I couldn't activate the buttons to make it stop or snooze---they didn't respond & the whole phone was frozen so I would have to reset.
Finally I deleted both alarms & set them up again. Working better, but again the 9:30 one has about 6 alarms that go off so I have to stop each one. I think one time I stopped all & the 10 pm one didn't go off. They are supposed to help remind me to start windiing down--the 9:30 one & then to seriously shut down the computer & get ready for bed.
Sometimes they don't seem to go off or accidentally get turned off.
Volume buttons can get bumped & turn to silen so calls missed
Another issue is that the volume up down buttons can get bumped. A while ago I was trying to set up a drs appt I think it was & was waiting for a call back. I finally called them back when I hadn't heard. I think they said they had tried to call. Later I saw that they had--4x but I discovered the volume was turned off so I missed those important calls.  Not good.
The keyboard is not very nice.
    Downgrade replacement for defective TP2
This was a replacement for my defective Touch Pro 2. I had paid for that top of the line phone, & in CA we have to pay sales tax on the full list price!  Someone (obviously going by the specs, not actual usage) raved about how this phone was supposed to be so super. NOT.  The list price was about half that of the TP2. It doesn't have the digital voice recorder the TP2 did, nor a lot of the HTC features that I liked & used like the automatic vibrate for appts that were listed as busy. & I really miss the way that I was able to set several cities up in world clock & then I could easily see what time it was & what the weather was. Nice when friends were in those ciities.
The keyboard on this is smaller & I keep getting periods in the middle of the sentence when typing emails which then makes the next letter a capital &makes it hard to read. It has 1 less row in the keyboard. The phone is smaller than the TP2, so easier to carry, but harder to see.
Someone called me on Thanksgiving & I didn't recognize the area code, but I was trying to answer & must have accidentally used the wrong slider so the call disappeared. Then there was some icon at the top, but it was so small I couldn't really tell that it was a voice mail indicator, so I didn't check until way late at night.
Verizon called this an upgrade--even though it was actually a replacement for a top of the line phone (the TP2 was a cool phone, if only it had worked well but it got so that it would randomly change orientation while I was trying to read an email, & it got so the backlight wouldn't always come on & sometimes even after pressing it multiple times) but I would call this a downgrade. While the processor is about 2x as fast as the TP2, it doesn't really work noticeably faster. I guess that's the winmob OS.
    Win mobile issues
& of course then Microsoft did a # on users of WinMob 6.5 when they came out with Windows phone 7 which is totally incompatible. So phones that ran 6.5 can't run 7 & the software is incompatible. I had gotten it for busines where we had aps that needed 6.5.
It has been a miserable experience with both of these phones, when I bought the TP2 I went for the premium phone, planning to keep it for over 2 years. Instead it had multiple issues its 1st year which I put up with for months. Finally got the replacement Fathom, which again, Verizon kept calling an upgrade but its really a downgrade.  I had paid for a top of the line phone, & got an inferior phone, smaller keyboard, & screen, less features & it doesn't work so well.
Are smart phones less reliable than regular cell phones?
I don't know if smart phones in general are less relaible than regular cell phones or what, but my experience has been very frustrating all the way. These are supposed to be productivity enhancers. Instead I've had way too many issues, & often tech support, while usually nice & trying to help, they didn't always know what they were talking about.
Want a reliable smart phone that does what it is supposed to do--feel ripped off
So I'm frustrated with this not very reliable phone & want to get a reliable phone. But I sure wasn't planning to have to buy a new phone this soon. My previous phone was a basic LG flip phone with speaker & no camera & that thing just worked so I kept it for about 5 years until I needed the win mob phone for biz. I no longer need it for that, & it isn't working very well, but I don't really want to spend the $ for a new phone right now.
Really frustrated with the bad experiences with both phones.  I feel like I didn't get what I paid for & again I went for a top of the line phone, intending to keep it for several years, not expecting all the problems I've had with both phones. btw, the Fathom retail price was about half that of the TP2, even though the 2 yr agreement price was the same. but in CA we pay sales tax on the full retail.
I would like to be able to get another smart phone that is really reliable like an iPhone, but really wasn't planning on buying a new phone this soon.

    Greetings caatkins4,
When your phone is the lifeline to your job, it would be most frustrating to experience issues such as the ones you've described, especially if you do not have a back up in place for when things go wrong. All of our phones are tested to make sure they meet the manufacturer’s specifications before being sent out. It is regretful to hear that the refurbished Samsung Galaxy Note 3 you received may not have met these specifications once it was in your hands.
I was able to review your services when I located your Geek Squad Protection plan with the email address you registered with the forum. Unfortunately, at this time we would only be able to provide you with another replacement. It appears we've already created the service order necessary, and presently, it appears that a tracking number has been created for your replacement phone. It should ship soon if it hasn't already, as it sometimes takes up to 24 hours for UPS to update their shipping information.
I apologize if this is of any inconvenience to you. If you should have any questions, please feel welcome to reach out to me.

OK, as always I waited before downloading a new OS and I'm sure glad I did. On the APP store I sorted comments by most critical...and WHOA...what is Apple doing? No support for Logic 9, MS Office? Is Apple only trying to reach the iphone/iTouch crowd? HELP! I was going to buy a new Mac pro & two 27" monitors but until I see some real problem addressing by Apple...I'll keep what I have and see how everything pans out. If anyone has any comments to ally my fears, I welcome them. I've been a devoted Mac user since 1993. 7500; G4; G5; and my latest Mac Pro...Where do I go? Again...HELP!

    Hi there,
If you look through ALL the reviews, they are mainly good. I feel that Lion is an excellent upgrade, although not essential.
There have been some issues with MS Office, but right now, it is up to Microsoft to issue a Lion compatible update, which will come in time. Saying this, MS Office has been working fine on my mac, it seems to be an isolated issue.
Logic 9 seems like a strange issue. Again, an update looks to be coming soon, with Lion support.
I do not feel that apple only focusing on the iPhone and iPad user base. There are many features carried along, but the machine can still be used for pro tools and use just as well. It still is a fantastic, reliable, fast, easy to use OS, which I have had very few problems with. Some additions you may not use, but they don't get in the way. You will love the new Exposé, Mission Control, as it is great for pro users who have many windows open at once, and the new spaces. You may however, never use Launchpad, but you don't have to, just drag it away from the dock!
I really reccomend buying a mac with Lion, although if you are worried about bugs, wait a few months for the issues to be ironed out, and updates to be given. Because the update is so very cheap, I really think you can hardly go wrong. Try it out with your current mac, and if you like it, go ahead and buy your new ones.
Lion is fantastic, albeit maybe rushed.
    Any other queries, just ask,
    Nathan

The following line tells me that this is not a template file, but a document created from a template called index.dwt
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/index.dwt" codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->
This means that you saved a child document as a template file at some stage.
If you go to Modify->Templates->Detach from Template, you can remove the template structure from your document. All you then need to do is to re-save the document as a template.

  • Flash crowd simulation

    hai everyone
right now i'm working on crowd simulation on flash. i'm
wondering what achievement in this area, like how many characters
(agents), how smart it is, & so on. So if you have any
infos/links/etc, please let me know (by respond to this message or
i prefer if you send me email).
i use flash because i believe it is a great IDE for make
prototype, i like as3 and graphics capabilities of it.

It worked fine as long as you don't mind finding the process. I ended up just making my own custom C#.NET limiter because finding the process each time became a pain in my rapid testing world but pointing to a premade (free) product is easier in this case . At most, get used to making a stub that won't "start" your project until you click a button so you have time to latch on to the process.
Mind you it can limit an adaptors bandwidth so you can always do that. It's not real-world however. I have 20 windows open, half of which use the net, so I can't do that.
To be honest I don't really know why anyone wants the simulator anymore anyhow. I typically use it to test the stability of apps downloading a large required asset over a long time. Otherwise a simple calculator will tell you how long the average person is going to wait via the filesize. I wouldn't mind having it back but it's not a priority to me.

  • HT1284 How can I backup word documents and not have them crowd my screen? Thanks.

Hi. How can I backup word documents and not have them crowd my screen? I know, you guessed it. I'm a novice, but not ashamed!

Please explain what you mean when you say backup Word documents crowds your screen.
I don't see any connection between backup and your screen.

  • Airport express crowding out other audio source?

I'm trying to set up a sound system centered around a set of Harman Kardon Soundsticks. There are two inputs: 1) AirPort Express (older, brick generation) for streaming from iOS and OS devices, and 2) a turntable with a line output. Since the Soundsticks only take one input via a 3.5mm aux jack, I need to use a splitter jack to get both inputs to the speakers. Here's the problem:
    1) AirPort alone in splitter jack = system works
    2) Turntable alone in splitter jack = system works
    3) Turntable and AirPort both in splitter jack = AirPort works and Turntable does NOT work
In scenario 3) I can very faintly hear the turntable output as if it were not plugged into anything, just the unamplified vibrations of the needles.
If in scenario 3) I replace the Turntable with, say, my iPhone, the iPhone works. So it is not a problem with the hardware anywhere along the line, as far as I can tell.
I'm baffled, honestly. Could it be something like the AirPort is continusouly providing an output that is crowding out the analog signal into the line? But then why would the iPhone overcome that?
More to the point, does anyone have a solu

I have the same problem: I'm trying to plug in 2 sources (MacBook and Airport Express) to my speakers via a splitter, and the AE seems to be severely distorting ("crowding out", as you put it) my MacBook output. When each of them is plugged in to the splitter separately, all is dandy.
I found that turning down the output of my non-AE source (MacBook, in my instance) helps reduce distortion a little bit, but not to a level that it can be properly listened to.
Anybody have a solution for this?

  • Hello, failing miserably here,  cant import nef files from aperture 3.1.2 to iphone 4.  I am syncing with the projects and smart albums and I am only able to sync the jogs and psd's   Anyone out there to aid this frustrated photographer??

hello, failing miserably here,  cant import nef files from aperture 3.1.2 to iphone 4.  I am syncing with the projects and smart albums and I am only able to sync the jogs and psd's   Anyone out there to aid this frustrated photographer??

See my reply to a later simplified version of your question. I don't think that either iPhone or iPad recognize RAW files such as NEFs. And the iPhone is not designed to be a mass storage device like a portable flash or portabel hard drive for temporary storage of files, if that's what you're after.  As I mentioned in my previous reply, I have an iPad and have been experimenting with it as a tool for photography, hoping that it would be a nice travel tool for backing up and viewing photos from my Nikon dslr. But both the iPad and iPhone just are not set up to do that well. Both show photos nicely, but organization of photos is very frustrating since you can't create albums on the iPhone or iPad, but only back on your sync computer. (There is one very powerful photo organization app called SortShots, but you import photos to it and it organizes and stores the images wtihin the app not using the native photo app. It doesn't work with NEFs either.) I don't know of any RAW processing software for either device.

  • How would I create a crowd scene?

Alright, Lets say I have guy A walking (
    http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d145/Trebor321/Walk1.swf
No problem right? Okay, now lets add a couple more folks. (
    http://s34.photobucket.com/albums/d145/Trebor321/?action=view&current=walk2.swf
Now you see how it slows down? Now imagine that with even
more people, and people that aren't carbon copies as well as an
actual background, and it slows to about 12 FPS(right now it's at
23). Any way to avoid that? I'm open to anything, thanks a bunch.

The fact of the matter is that the more things going on in a
SWF, the more strain on the processor. A truly animated crowd scene
in Flash is pretty impossible. As the reply above said, if you want
to do this at all, you must simplify the vector art to the bare
minimum (no crease lines in the trousers, no gradients, no blurs or
other filters). You also have to look for ways to cheat. For
example, by the time you get around 5 rows back, the characters
should be solid silhouettes of various hues (not just tinted
versions of your character, but separately animated solid-fill
movie clips). This slightly reduces processor strain, and serves to
frame your foreground characters nicely. Any distant characters
should be just a vaguely moving mass, with semicircles popping in
and out to give an impression of movement. This makes sense
aesthetically as well. Take a look at animated productions for
broadcast, and also most computer games: the further away an object
(especially an animated character) is, the less detail is
    shown.

  • System sound (like when empty trash) miserably stop working in Lion 10.7.2

I have upgraded to Lion10.7.2 on my Macbook Pro early 2008 Intel 15 inches, and the update went fine except one annoying problem I found so far.
This problem also occurred in 10.7.0 and 10.7.1 and it seems that no fix has been made in 10.7.2
The problem is when I drag file to Trash and empty it, there should be trash empty sound effect, and this has been with us since Tiger.
In 10.7.2 it work as expected, but when I close the lid to get it to sleep, once I open the lid, the system sound is gone without no reason.
When I play music from iTunes, or when I change volume level, the sound effects work as usual, but empty trash sound stop working miserable.
I have to shut down, press Option-Command-P-R and power on to reset PRAM then system sound like empty trash come back. Again, afpr may be half a day, it's gone again
Any friend here has solution for this? The com.apple.soundprefs.plist file, if you delete it, in Lion, it is not recreated again, and it's gone forever. SO delete plist file is not a solution.
    Help please

I found a workaround to my problem accidentally.
As the system sound like empty trash or file drag sound stop working miserably, after close the MBP lid to sleep, after it awake, system sound just stop working.
Before this, I have to shut down my MBP, reset PRAM by press Option-Control-P-R and power on, to get the system sound back
But I found that the workaround whenever the system sound stop working thad do not require reboot is:
    1. Go to System Preference-Sound
    2. Change Play sound effects through: Internal Speakers to Soundflower 2ch) in the drop down list.
(Soundflower has been installed by a software called iShowU HD (screen capturing software))
    3. Slide to change Alert Volume from the original position
    4. Switch back to Internal Speakers from Soundflower 92ch) in the drop down list
    5. Change Alert Volume by moving slide bar back to the desirable position
Immediately, the sound effects that stop working will start working again.
This just work for my case. I don't know it will work for ther people that have the same problem as me or not.
And if possible, can some expert here give me explanation why doing the above make system sound effect to work again? mI want to know the cause, and definite solution to the problem
Advise and suggestion please. Thank in advance

  • Is there a quick way to replace all the faces in the crowd with those of a few friends' faces?

I took some photos of the crowd at the fabulous McCartney concert in Phoenix. I would like to replace them with the faces of three people for an article I'm doing about the concert. I was hoping that there was a feature that would automate this somehow or at least cut a few hours off the work.

    Hi Folks,

in Premiere as shown on the Adobe MAX 2011:
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/max-2011-sneak-peeks/max-2011-sneak-peek-automatic-synchronizati on-of-crowd-sourced-videos-/
Please just give me a raw guess about the release.
    Regards
    Karsten

    Hi Jim,
I agree that i wouldnt make sense to do this as a low-budget service,
But The German Telecom had a Big Social-media campaign Last Year
On facebook, Hosted by a well-Known hiphop artist, asking The Fans for their Voices
For "The biggest choir" for a new cover version...
At The end they produced a Song with more than 4500 People joining
    The campaign, including some Videos...
Now adapt that campaign for companies Sponsoring a live-event...
And i know The media-Budget of those companies...;-)
    By The Way:
Tested Pluraleyes of Singular Software tonight and all i can say...its brillant!
It would have Safed me Days of synchronising Video-Clips in The past...
I'll Be interested in their New cloud-idea...
    Tanks again - Take care

  • What is best filter to decrease crowd noise from background of live band recording?

I have a video of live musicians, the camera picked up more of the ambient crowd noise than I had expected.  Does anyone know of a good track effect that would reduce the crowd noise without compromising the music quality?
    Thanks,
    Sam

Since noise tends to have a very broad frequency spectrum, I don't see good chances to reduce the noise without affecting the music.
