Misled and disappointed - don't waste your time with this "player"

Frankly, I feel extremely misled by the description of AMP on its product page. Calling it a Media Player and all the talk of being able to watch what you want, when you want and streaming and downloading video - all you can *actually* do is watch stuff from the signed up content providers, or that you've already got on your hard drive (and have presumably got a player for already, that will almost certainly take up a lot less screen estate than this beast). Oh, and there's some mention of adding RSS feeds of videos - though looking at other posts here whether that works is debatable. Anything else might as well not exist.
I had hoped that it would be a way of watching embedded streamed flash videos without having to have the whole webpage that they're on open - this would give you just the video, so would be more compact, and would be resizeable so you could watch it at any size you liked, not just the default or full-screen. After all, coming from Adobe, there would be no problem about having to reverse engineer the RTMP format.
Maybe even (though I thought it unlikely) being able to download videos where the provider permitted it - no worry though, there are other tools for that.
Also - the design. A massive window, not resizeable at all except to minimise / maximise. Appalling contrast - it's like being in a cave, everything's so black. I couldn't even see that there were scroll bars - just waved my mouse around where I thought they should be.
It's like having the worst, most useless part of RealPlayer (the download centre, or whatever they call it) and not the player itself. This is *not* a media player - a client, maybe.
Frankly, the only reason I can see for installing this is if there is some content that it has that you can't get anywhere else. If not, don't waste your time - use something else.
Like I say, I'm disappointed. I feel like I've been lied to and had my time wasted. Unless I'm *really* missing something??
Now we'll see how easily it uninstalls...

  • Am I wasting my time with from source compiles?

    Greetings all,
I have a question, and it may be silly. I'm a gamer but not a hardcore "zOMG I needZ moRe powAh tHan I actUAlly n33d!" type.
    I've used Gentoo from 2002 - 2006.
I started using Arch Linux in fall of 2006 and have used it since.
Couple days ago I "upgraded" from my AMD 64 x2 - 2Ghz system, to a Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3Ghz system with 4 GB Ram and Geforce 560 Ti. I installed Arch Linux and then I installed Gentoo just for nostalgic and curiosities sake, I had a working Gentoo install within a few hours. I'm not noticing that much of a difference in performance between the two, X seems to load a bit faster on Gentoo but other apps in general load the same, have same performance quality and games have about the same exact framerates. Reguardless if I use "default" USE flags or "all dependencies" USE flags (I tend to be an all dependencies type of guy -- but I did both types for my testings) im not seeing that much, if any at all, performance differences.
I should also note that: Phoronix Test Suite actually provided better performance numbers in Arch Linux than in Gentoo Linux.
Now my "silly" question and I want true answers and not just speculative answers.
Am I wasting my time with Gentoo and from source compiles in general? If I generally tend to do all dep compiles, and im not seeing any performance difference reguardless if I do or don't do the all deps USE flags approach, simular gaming framerates, etc... am I really wasting my time with all the compiles and compile time? Thanks in advance.

IME yes, if your goal is overall performance you ARE wasting your time. I have the same results in benchmarking stock Archlinux vs. the same system recompiled with CFLAGS="-march=native etc." on Sandy Bridge. The recompiled system ran slightly slower on some tests. Quite a bit faster on bzip2 compression. Better x264 performance. Much lower latencies, measured using the interbench package from AUR. But the lower latency depends primarily on the kernel.  I use linux-lqx with arch=native; it is better than linux-ck or linux-pf in my tests.
I compile everything on my Archlinux system, using xmonad/lxpanel/rox as desktop or, when I'm in an alternate mood, KDE/rox. I don't compile from source for speed (except for math packages like sage-mathematics which can sometimes take advantage of the extra registers and SIMD instructions). I compile from source so that I have a complete system on hand. I once lived off-grid (in a cabin in the Ozark National Forest) and got in the habit of keeping my system ready for self-reliance. I enjoy having source code available for perusal and I modify a few of my packages. I use my own build script that uses meld to help me quickly bring forward my modifications into updated PKGBUILDs from the Arch repository (hey, there's no USE flags but I find that just modifying the PKGBUILD is actually cleaner, less baroque than the circular mess that can happen in Gentoo.)
One word of caution on your Phoronix benchmarks. Phoronix Test Suite was invented for comparing hardware. It uses its own binaries for many of the tests. When looking for the effect of software changes on the same hardware you should use the changed software (obviously). To do this with PTS you need to go into the ~/.phoronix-test-suite/installed-tests/pts/<test>/ folder and move aside the folder containing the phoronix version of the binary being tested and link to your /usr directory. For example, in the sqlite test folder I move aside "sqlite_" and "ln -s /usr sqlite_"  You can figure how to get each test to run local software by looking at the script in the test folder. If you don't do this, IMO you're getting misleading results from the PTS.

Is this library one that you've been using since you bought the MBP?  If so and you're running iPhoto 9 then apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with
Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Hi, I got a big problem. I restored my mac and after I erased everything and started to restall the system, it showed I need to give the apple ID that was purchased the lion. The problem is that I lost my CD, and I don't have an ID with lion purchased

Hi, I got a big problem. I restored my macbook pro and after I erased everything and started to restall the system, it showed I need to give the apple ID that was purchased the lion. The problem is that I lost my installing CD, and I don't have an ID with lion purchased, so what should I do? Do you sell the system software?

This is a user forum; we're not  Apple.
Please contact the Apple Support folks directly for issues related to hardware and software purchases.
The particular model of MacBook Pro is a key detail here, as the Mac model will determine the oldest version it can boot, as well as whether it'll boot more current software.
AFAIK there is and was no Lion installer DVD available.  It was a download.  AFAIK, the last DVDs commonly available were for Snow Leopard 10.6.  Snow Leopard DVDs are still available in the Apple online store in various countries, if your MacBook Pro is old enough to be able to boot that version.
If your MacBook Pro purchase with Lion wasn't registered with Apple, then you'll have to discuss this directly with the Apple Support folks, or repurchase Lion from the Mac App Store (which will usually involve a call to Apple for a redemption code as it's old software), or you'll "purchase" (it's free) Mavericks OS X 10.9 and wipe and install that assuming your MacBook Pro supports Mavericks.  If you didn't purchase the MacBook Pro from Apple (and it was shipped with an older release), then you'll end up acquiring a redemption code from Apple for Lion, or installing Mavericks.
For completeness and given you're probably already aware of this, the usual approach for restoration with recent OS X versions is via the recovery boot (more details).  If the disk is wiped and you can't get Lion, then you'll probably end up reinstalling with Target Disk Mode using another Mac with a compatible FireWire or Thunderbolt port and a cable.  Or visit the local Apple Store.
sputniki: Once OS X 10.7 or 10.9 has been reinstalled, yes, getting Time Machine configured and going is undoubtedly on the agenda.  But had there been a viable backup here, I expect jianghua would have used it.

A bit late for this advice now, but hopefully you'll know what to do next time.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD

I need to change the country for my Apple store account but this message appears "You have a store credit balance; you must spend your balance before you can change stores." but my credit is 1.58$ only and I couldn't buy any app with this amount! Any way how to fix that and I don't have a problem if I lose this 1.58 $?

If you can't spend it then you can try contacting iTunes support and ask if they can remove the balance from your account : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

  • My macbook isn't powering up and makes a beeping noise in time with the sleep light

Hi There I hope someone can help!!!
I had disconnected the power cable and left the MacBook in sleep mode with the lid shut. When I now go to open my MacBook up, and wait for my system to resume from where I left off the screen doesn't on and the sleep light goes off. when I close the lid the sleep light goes back on as if it is in sleep mode but the same happens when I open it again, no power to the screen.
I order to try get my MacBook working again I tried holding down the power button and switching it back on again but the MacBook now looks as if it is going to power up but the sleep light comes on for about 3 secs and then beeps, then every 4-5 secs constantly the MacBook beeps once in time with the sleep light (to note the sleep light is not following its usual fade on fade off rhythm).
I have tried resetting the SMC using the shift command control option and power button (also this is the only way to stop the beeping and flashing) and when you try and switch on the MacBook if you just press the power button it just follows the same beep with sleep light routine, but if you hold the power button in then the sleep light then flashes quickly about 4-6 times and then starts to beep in time with the flash again.
I will also add I have not reconfigured anything or added any RAM to my MacBook it is still on the standard (manufacturing) configuration as I have been looking about for anyone with similar issues and the main question back seems to be have you changed the RAM, I have also tried resetting teh RAM and the proble still persists.
If someone can help it would be awesome!
