Mismatching fonts

I work in a multi-computer environment. All machines are Mac OSX.4, all have InDesign CS. We all have the same programs. We use Entourage for email, Safari and Firefox for web browsing. We don't have Word, but we do have Open Office. We have loaded the exact same fonts into our user/library/fonts folders. Theoretically, it would seem that the same document opened on different machines would show the same fonts, but with certain fonts, particularly Arial and Verdana, if I have worked on a document with the font Arial regular, when my buddy opens it, he shows that it's missing the font Arial regular (TT). If he does uses the Find Font command and changes it to HIS Arial Regular, when I open it it shows as missing the font Arial regular OTF. We've done spotlight searches on both machines for Arial, and there do seem to be numerous versions of Arial on both machines in various program folders, but all the files look the same - all show the icon with FFIL at the bottom. I've tried using an online font converter to change one to an OTF version in the hope that I could load an OTF version on my machine, but I get the message "invalid font file". This is a huge time-waster, because as we pass the file back and forth, we repeatedly have to change the font to suit our individual machines. There must be a logical solution to this issue, but we're all stumped. I suspect it has to do with the user/library/font folder location of the fonts, but that's just a guess. Can you provide a solution?

... there do seem to be numerous versions of Arial on both machines in various program folders, but all the files look the same - all show the icon with FFIL at the bottom ...
InDesign can do weird things when it finds different versions with the same font name ("Arial") in different, and otherwise valid, locations.
Try finding out which version actually is used on each computer: Find font, click the "More info" button, to show the font version and location on the hard disk. Then you can copy one of the 'good' Arials to the other computers (and make sure that will be the *only* version ID is able to see).

  • Mismatched font size in forms

When I set the font size in a form field, instead of allowing the field to use auto-sizing, the form places the auto-sized font over the size font I've selected for the field, making it illegible. How do I turn off this function or correct it? I did not find a solution in Text Field Properties.

About all you can do is set the screen settings down, which results in everything on your screen being larger. Try 800 x 600.

  • Rep60: mismatched fonts in character reports

We have some character reports with Courier New (normal and bold). Sometimes we have experienced that one or more reports, with no apparent reason, change their font. It becomes usually "LucidaConsole.." or "Arial". This thing causes reports to show unprintable characters or symbols (ran either from RDF and REP). The worst thing is that the same report has different results on different clients (W98 - W98Se - WNT) without apparent logic. We have already test the contents of font directory on various PCs without finding significative differences.
Have you already experienced this ?
Thanks to all of you in advance

    hello,
from your question i understand that you want to create a barcode in a character mode report. this will be very difficult as it requires the destination printer to be able to print barcodes. a barcode font will not help here, as charactermode reports do not leverage fonts other than ones available in the printer.
usually it is more to creating a barcode than just printing the value in barcode font. most barcodes need special algorithms to create chechsums and similar stuff.
you might want to look into our barcode example that shows you how to use a java bean to generate a barcode.
    http://otn.oracle.com/products/reports/htdocs/getstart/examples/BarcodeBeanPaper/index.html
oracle does neither ship barcodefonts nor java beans to generate barcodes for production purposes. the supplied sampels are for demo purposes only. however there are several commercially available fonts as well as javabeans on the market.

  • Illustrator CS6 is not saving files properly.

I'm having issues with Illustrator CS6 (16.0.0) saving my files properly.  Let me give you some background here.
I work for a company that manufactures fishing lures.  I have to create the product cards that these products are to be packaged.  I use Illustrator CS6 to create my cards and I save a master file that includes the original text.  From there, I save the file as an Illustrator CS3 file since most printers I dealt with don't have anything versions higher than CS3.  I take these cards and convert the text to an object so that no one has to deal with fonts or mismatched font errors.  After this, I create a PDF of that same file so that my contacts at the print shop can see the card files and keep a reference for themselves.  On several occasions now, I've gotten emails from my clients saying that they need the necessary fonts to print these cards.  I check my files that should now be all objects and its back to being font text again.  I double check these files beore sending them but if I should have to close out these files and work on another project, then come back to files I've working on.  The objects are now back to fonts again.  All the while, I'm saving my progress.  I've been bitten too many times on this in the past, so I'm a saving freak.
I'm using an iMac (2011) 3.4 Ghz Intel Core i7 with 16 gig of RAM, 2 gig AMD Radeon HD 6970M graphics, several hard drives (most being network drives) including the 1TB HD that came with the computer, MacOS 10.8 (Mountian Lion) - the same occurs with any flavor of MacOS 10.7 (Lion) too.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Wayne

    Wayne,
You have used Type>Create Outlines, with no live Type left behind (after saving the original artwork, of course), no?
What if you Save As PDF, thus embedding the font(s), and they take it from there?

  • CS6 InDesign does not launch, gives a series of issue messages.

I faced an issue to launch InDesign when opening an earlier file. Then as a fresh launch also it gives the same errors.

Last "hopeful message" that still crashes! Notice both are in the same image!
    All help appreciated! Thanks.

Finally the world is back on its track:
ID launched and allowed creating a new file
ID opened the earlier file without a crash, files opened with its typical messages of colorspace mismatch, font missing, links not having files... sometimes these messages feel good
Re-installation has got things back. I had some doubts about these, but all works:
    - System was not restared at all during the uninstall and reinstall, magically it also kept track of serial number (so glad I did not have to hunt that out from records!)
    - No earlier windows restore point was required
I am glad all is OK now, but "what" was the problem? And what made it to occur? Any ways to prevent such thing to happen again?
    Thanks.

  • Need help setting up a shared /Library/Fonts folder for font sharing

    Hi,
I have a problem setting up a shared /Library/Fonts folder on my OSX 10.5.5 server that gets automounted on the OSX 10.5.x clients.
While I managed to get the folder to show up automatically under /Network/Library/Fonts on the clients, the fonts in these folders do not show up in Font Book on the client systems. Plus, it seems like there is some sort of language mismatch, since I am using a German OSX installation. While the shared /Library/Fonts folder does show up under the "Network" area (where the servers are listed), it does not connect correctly on the "/Netzwerk" folder that OS X creates automatically. In fact there are 2 folders named "/Netzwerk" on my startup drive root directory, one that reads "/Network" when looking at it in the terminal, and one named "/Netzwerk". The /Network one does have a working link to the /Library folder, and the /Netzwerk one does only contain something looking like an alias of /Library, but it does not allow any access to this alias.
If anybody did manage to get this Netowrk "/Library/Fonts" to work I would be happy for some feedback. I am simply not sure if this is related to a localization bug, or if I am doing something wrong here. The fact that the folder and the fonts does show up correctly under the network portion of the sidebar seems to indicate that my setup is correct, but still the fonts do not work.
Any ideas, or maybe a step-by-step description on how to set this up would be great.
    Thanks a lot,
    Floh

Hi, Sorry I don't have an answer for you. But how did you get to share /Library/Fonts? I was trying to do the same thing by using "File Sharing" in Server administrator. But under volumes, I don't see my root directory "/". So there is no way that I can share any of my folders under "/".
    Thanks.

  • Setting font based on input parameter

I would like to set the font of certain fields within my form based on the language. We have a table created that will store the language code and the font associated with the language. I am passing this value to the form, but I can't get my scripting correct to set the font to the value of the parameter. If I hard code the value, then the font changes as expected (this.font.typeface = "MS P Gothic"). Can someone please help me? Here is a sample of what I've tried:
    FormCalc:
    If (!$record.V_LANGU_FONT.rawValue.isNull) then
    this.font.typeface = $record.V_LANGU_FONT.rawValue
    endif
    JavaScript:
    if (!$record.V_LANGU_FONT.rawValue.isNull) {
    this.font.typeface = $record.V_LANGU_FONT.rawValue;
    Thanks!

    Hi Sandy,
That was a wonderful article! Unfortunately, I'm still having a problem. When I do a print Preview PDF within SFP, I see the error "Argument mismatch in property or function argument". I have added a normal text field to my design page, set the text field to invisible and bound it to my input field of V_LANGU_FONT. I originally had the field defined as CHAR200 (based on the FPFONTREPL-DESTINATION field), but then changed it to STRING based on the article. I then added the scripting to one of the elements that needs to have the font dynamically changed. I've added a screen shot showing the scripting:
If I hardcode the font name:
The font for the element gets changed correctly. Can you please tell me what is wrong?
    Thanks!

The mdworker / CoreCalendar messages keeps on going. If should post entire thing, please let me know but it's huge.
When I have Spotlight disabled I don't notice this happening (via enable Privacy in Spotlight for my entire account). So seems like there is some strange file that triggers this in Spotlight.
So, Spotlight gets file that's mangled and that triggers this entire mess? This some kind of new Mac security vulnerability?
I ran ClamXav and VirusScan hoping it would detect the file, but after a clean scan still nothing.
Then looked at the Open Files of the mdworker task via Activity Monitor to see if would provide a clue of what tripped it up:

I've ran the program few times before, but didn't get that error. After rebooting machine after this incident I'm able to run Shark again, but for some reason can't right after this event happened.
Maybe it's nothing, but figure provide as many clues as I can in case it's of some help.
Already reinstalled machine a couple of times, but this keeps popping up once I have Spotlight enabled.
Seems ideal if could trigger Shark or some debug tool upon this event and capture the necessary info to isolate the offending file that trips up Spotlight. But that's not something I know how to do...at least not yet.
Maybe there is some tool that's made to scan for this sort of thing?
Any chance this is some buffer overflow thing on Spotlight?

  • Korean Font Problem

    Here's the thing.
    im using macromedia flash8
i need to use korean characters in my fla file.
everything is fine _if only_ the settings in the windows xp's
Regional and Language Options > Advanced > Language for
    non-Unicode programs
    is set to Korean.
but by using that setting, there is other problem in other
part of the windows.( the backslash \ path separator becomes Won
    currency sign).
But if i set that to English. and i opened a fla file
containing korean characters. it warned me for Missing Font. Tried
subtituting it with other korean fonts (no luck) all the korean
characters becomes boxes. and for the info most of the korean
characters are used in the script / actions panel. the korean
characters are fine if i type them with text tool in the stage. but
    not on the script panel.
So is there any way to fix that? or any way to change the
font for the texts in script / actions panel?
    thanks

These are not font issues, they are encoding mismatches, where names are either not in Unicode as required by OS X or are somehow being read in the wrong encoding.  It is not uncommon with mp3 files imported from Windows, which often uses different encodings than Mac.  The zip utility also botches encodings sometimes.
Try to make sure all the id3 tags are in Unicode before transferring and avoid zipping/unzipping and see if that helps.

This is METAFONT, Version 2.718281 (TeX Live 2009/Arch Linux)
    How can I fix it?
    thanks

    - make sure you actually do have these fonts installed (you should have files fplmri.pfb and pplrc8r.pfb somewhere under /usr/share/texlive-dist/fonts/)
    - first try 'sudo updmap-sys', maybe together with temporary moving ~/.texlive somewhere else (this resets the texlive user config)
    - if that doesn't help, try 'updmap --enable Map=pazo.map' and 'updmap --enable Map=fpls.map' (this explicitly tells texlive that it should use these two map files, which contain mappings for the fonts mentioned in your original post).

  • Why are my fonts and font sizes completely haywire in 6.0.1?

I have never has issues with fonts and Firefox. I upgraded to 6.0 two days ago and everything turned to Arial Narrow. Fonts were smaller, fonts are mismatched on pages and look strange. I tried changing the options and setting minimum font sizes and font faces, but when I use the back button these font faces and sizes no longer exist and I see the page in Arial Narrow again. This is so frustrating - I can't even browse the web because I can't read the darn thing.

Check the font prefs and the various text-cnetric panels' options. this happenes when you choose to group by English name, but the font is encoded for a different region/ uses a different set of characters.

  • Why are the fonts so blurry on iMac 27 in OsX?

I just got a new iMac 27, my first Apple desktop.
And I'm sorely disappointed with how fonts look. Sort of clumpy and blurry, as if they are mismatched to the resolution of the screen.
I tried a number of sizes, fonts, apps, browsers (Safari and Chrome), brightness settings. Even changed my glasses.
Then I installed Windows 8 in Bootcamp. Perfectly clear fonts on exactly the same hardware!
I am seriously considering returning the iMac as I'm getting headaches.
Before I do, I thought I'd ask here if there is something I'm missing and there is some solution?
    Thanks in advance.

I did call Support, spent 1hr40 with them on the phone, so far have no resolution but the case is still on-going. The only action proposed was to delete the partition and reinstall OS X. This did not change anything.
After the reinstall I captured some screenshots. Unfortunately this forum does not post the images in their full resolution, so it may not be as obvious when you read it:
    On OS X, using Safari:
The same website on Windows 8:
And an article, again first in OS X:
    and in Windows:
    I rest my case.
Message was edited by: jamullian to reflect the observed resolution not being the same as what is posted.
