Missed useful feature in mail.app spotligth

In Leopard OS was a very useful feature in mail.ap spotligth.
When you drag'n'drop a letter to the spotlight window of the 10.5 mail.app all the letters from mail recipient were shown as a spotlight-find-result. It was a very useful feature in previous MacOS. Not it's lost.
Is this feature lost only in my OS?
English is not my native language, sorry for possible grammar mistakes.

  • Export feature in Mail.app literally does nothing?

I used to use the export feature in Mail.app fairly frequently to back up my GMail and some other email to a local disk.
Now the export feature seems to do almost literally nothing.
No matter what account, folder, sub-folder, or "mailbox" I choose, when I export it, I end up with 3 files: Info.plist and table_of_contents, both of which are trivially small (maybe 30 to 200 bytes) and an mbox file, which should contain my emails, but it's zero bytes.
Is anyone else seeing this problem?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
If you are unable to remember your password, security questions, don’t have access to your rescue address or are unable to reset your password for whatever reason, your only option is to contact Apple ID Support, upon speaking to an operator you should explain that your problem is related to your Apple ID, this way you will not be charged for assistance, even if you don’t have an AppleCare plan.
The operator will take you through some steps you may have already tried, however they need to be sure they have exhausted all usual approaches before trying to reset your account, so you should try to be helpful and show patience with the procedure.
The operator will need to verify they are speaking to the account holder and may ask you some questions that only the account holder could know, and you will need to answer them if the process is to proceed.
Once the operator has verified your identity they will send a message through to your device which contains an alpha numeric code, which you will need to read back to them.
Once this has been completed they will send an email to your iCloud email address after a period of 24 hours, so you should check that mail is enabled in your devices iCloud settings.
Upon receipt of the email, use the reset link provided to reset your password, after which you should be able to make the adjustments to iCloud that you wish to do.

Thanks for your response and yes I understand what you are saying. Maybe you could explain why "email users" hate HTML email with a passion.
These tend to be technical users who have a more purist attitude about email. They prefer that email be text-only, and consider HTML formatting to be superfluous for most messages. And I do think they have a point. If you have 100 plain-text emails and 100 HTML emails, you will notice that the HTML emails take up noticeably more disk space. And if the HTML email senders have loaded down their default emails with background images, signatures with corporate logos and winmail.dat attachments and all manner of embedded ornamentation, and (I never even thought people went this far) animations, then a simple email reply like "Thanks! I'll see you this evening," ends up carrying an tremendous additional amount of file size and network bandwidth overhead just to carry those six words. It not only means more disk space consumed, but it ripples all through the system: More space is required for backing up and archiving your emails, plus more mail server space and network bandwidth are consumed per message. Purists see this as an incredible waste of resources.
The message body of at text email can simply be "Thanks! I'll see you this evening."
The HTML version, at a bare minimum, must be
    {html}
    {p}"Thanks! I'll see you this evening."{/p}
    {/html}
(replaced angle brackets with curly brackets so Apple Forums won't try and format it)
Already that's almost double the amount of characters required to send the message, just to format it in HTML. And that's if no fonts, styles, graphics, or media have been applied. If they are, the number of actual characters sent balloons dramatically.
I'm in the middle. I don't hate HTML email, I'll even turn it on when I think formatting will help my message. But I like to use disk space efficiently, so I've set plain text as my default for sending messages.

  • Stumbled upon the Magnification feature in Mail App

Just an FYI, I was working with the mail app and needed to go back and change a few words and noticed that there are no direction keys to help with that task. Anyway, just by accident I was tapping to bring the cursor to the correct position and "accidentally" pushed and held my finger on the screen and low and behold a little magnification window pops up so that you can drag and precisely place the cursor exactly where you want it. I was actually wondering how Apple missed putting direction keys to move the cursor about but it seems they thought of that with this. Very cool.
Not sure if this has been mentioned, but I did a search and didn't find anything, if mentioned in another post somewhere by all means delete this post.

I'll have to try it in other places, since I've never really used it for anything but listening to music so there really wasn't much need for me to type until mail and maps showed up.

  • Want more formatting features for Mail.app

    Hi everyone,
Wouldn't it be nice if Apple made Mail.app as feature rich as Thunderbird?
Wow! You'd think they'd want Mail to be fully formattable and customizable with all the features available.
I can't believe we can't control background color for example.
    Thanks

    IMO, no.
I'm not a fan of using HTML for email message composition and I'm not interested in changing the background color of my messages or adding animated gifs or smileys and I don't enjoy receiving messages with the same.
Using HTML for email message composition increased the cost to exchange electronic messages and also causes a wide range of problems including major security issues - primarily for Windows users.

  • Is there a way to get out of using RSS in mail.app and go back to Safari?

    Hello,
I am a big RSS user and have a pretty huge and unwieldy subscription list. When Leopard shipped, I started using mail.app to read my RSS. I went so far as to delete all of my subscriptions from Safari and rely entirely on mail.app.
As some of you may have noticed from other threads in this forum, RSS in mail.app seems to be not ready for primetime. Specifically, if I leave mail.app open for more than about an hour, the RSS feeds stop updating entirely or update sporadically. It is at this time when I will also invariably find a Database.sqlite3 file in my trash can (which prevents the trash can from being emptied, too).
If I restart mail.app, the feeds start updating again BUT INCLUDE HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF OLD ITEMS. This happens every time I restart mail.app now. I have read all of the other threads that suggest that perhaps dot mac bookmark synching is to blame. This cannot be in my case since I have it all turned off and am not a dot mac member. I have no plugins installed in mail.app or safari.
I have come to the conclusion that RSS in mail.app is too buggy and unreliable to be used and I would like to go back to Safari. The trouble is that when Leopard shipped, the idea of RSS in mail.app made perfect sense to me and I got so enthusiastic and "there's no going back" that I deleted my enormous amount of RSS subscriptions in Safari. Is there anyway to export my RSS subscriptions from mail.app so that I can import them into Safari? I REALLY don't want to try and add them again one by one.

here is a link to macosxhints.com that tells you how to output all of your feed URLs to a terminal window. from there you can cut and paste them into your new feed reader of choice...

and if you are in the marked for a new reader may i suggest David Watanabe's excellent NewsFire. he had just recently made it totally free as a gift to the macintosh community.

    Hi Vincent 76,
If you are not seeing the options I mentioned above, check the settings that you have in the Mail Preferences for each email account:
The image below is from the Help Menu within the Mail application.  It shows the button to the right of the Send button that you can click on to add fields like Reply To, CC or BCC.  The From field is shown in this diagram, so I'm not sure why you are not seeing it.
    Write and send messages
When you want to write or reply to a message, Mail opens a new window where you can add recipients, text, photos, and more, before sending your message.

    Mail (Yosemite): Set Mail preferences
    Change Mail settings
Use Mail Preferences to set or change options for the email accounts you use in Mail, and for working with messages and mailboxes. Choose Mail > Preferences, then click a preference pane to view options:
General: Change settings that range from how often to get messages, to the kinds of messages to include when searching for messages in Mail.
Accounts: Add, delete, and disable your email accounts in Mail. Use the Mailbox Behaviors pane to control how draft, sent, junk, and deleted (or “trash”) messages are stored. The Advanced pane includes options for messages, attachments, and more.
Junk Mail: Enable the junk mail filter and change settings to improve it.
Fonts & Colors: Select the fonts and font sizes used to display messages.
Viewing: Change settings to control how messages are shown in the Mail window.
Composing: Change settings for spell checking, and for addressing and replaying to messages.
Signatures: Create signatures and have them automatically appended to all of your messages, or use them in only some messages.
Rules: Create rules to do things like have messages from a certain person automatically moved to a mailbox, or highlight messages about a birthday party.
To learn about the options in a pane, click the Help button at the bottom of the pane.

  • Do I have to use computer based mail app to send mail through Safari?

Can't believe I am confused on this...but....if I click on an email link in a web page that I am looking at in Safari, does sending email require opening and sending through a separate computer based mail app? My email accounts are through AOL, but doesn't seem that even if I sign in at AOL's website, that I can access a web page through them, and in turn have mail links link to my online AOL email page. That means that I have to use a mail app that people who access my computer and open and look into?

    Hi Jim,
You can set up AOL mail using the Mac Mail application, instructions here.
    http://macs.about.com/od/applications/qt/mailaol.htm
That means that I have to use a mail app that people who access my computer and open and look into?
Only if you share your login user name and password with them.
If you allow visitors to use your Mac, you can setup a guest account for them to use.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/15600.html
The instructions at that link are for v10.5 but it works fine for v10.6 as well.

  • Can you use Exchange with Mail.app?

    Hello,
I have attempted to search for this answer but have not found anything that really helped me. Can someone guide me to an url or resource to see if using Exchange on a Mack with Mail is possible?
    Thanks so much!

    Hi all;
For MS Exchange on Mac, you need to run IMAP4 on MS Exchange server to allow Mac users connect and download emails locally using Mail.app (copy from emails remain on server like Outlook).
    For that do the following:
    1. Enable IMAP4 service:
    a. From Services (Local).
    b. Microsoft Exchange IPAM4.
    c. Change it to Automatic.
    d. Start the service.
    2. Enable IMAP4 in MS Exchange system:
    a. Exchange System Manager.
    b. First Organization.
    c. Servers.
    d. 'Server name'.
    e. Protocols.
    f. IMAP4.
    g. Default IMAP4 Virtual Server.
    h. Right click and Start.
    3. Restart MS Exchange server.
    On Mac client (Mail.app):
    1. Add new account.
    2. Email Address: [email protected]
    3. Password: user's password.
    4. Account Type: Exchange.
    5. Incoming Mail Server: "MS Exchange server" IP or Full DNS name (i.e. Server.test.com).
    6. User Name: [email protected]
    7. Password: user's password.
    8. Outlook Web Access Server: Same to Incoming Mail Server.
    9. Outgoing Mail Server: Same to Incoming Mail Server.
    10. Check "Use Authentication" and fill User and Password fields.
    11. Check "Take Account Online" .
Note: Mac users have to join the windows domain

  • Using Gmail over Mail.app

    Hi.
I was wondering if there were any mac users using Gmail.
I tried to sync (this has been a problem with Tiger Mail as well) and all the mails are downloaded from Gmail server.
However, similar messages (i.e. those that the recipient replied) were not grouped together as the original, just like what Gmail does when u access it online.
Would there be some function of mail that can do that so it makes it more compact like accessing Gmail online?
Also, deleting the messages from Mail.app would not delete the messages in the Gmail account right? In that case, if i accessed my Gmail somewhere else, i would be reading "unread" or "undeleted" messages that were actually "read" or "deleted" on my mac at home.
i hope im making sense here and some help can be sought.thank you. enjoy leoparD!

    Jeffrey,
Gmail has a setting to delete mail from the gmail inbox after downloading to the mac.
Login to Gmail on the web
    Go to settings
    Go to forwarding and pop/imap
Under item 2. When messages are accessed with POP, choose delete gmail's copy.
    That works for me.

  • Using .mac with mail.app and iphone...problems with mailbox folders i think

Is it normal in mail.app for my folders to be as follows: Under the heading Mailboxes, I have Inbox folder and Sent folder and trash folder. Then, instead of a junk folder under that, it is below all of that under the heading Chris's Email (obviously my account). Why is this?

Who is your ISP used for connecting to the internet?
Are you also accessing an email account and SMTP server that is provided by your ISP with the Mail.app and if so, are you able to send messages with your ISP's email account?
Most if not all ISPs used for connecting to the internet now block the use of SMTP servers that are outside of their network (or not provided by the ISP) on Port 25 which is the default port for SMTP servers.
Some ISPs allow the use of an authenticated SMTP server only (such as the .Mac SMTP server) on Port 25 but some block its use regardless.
These restructions are in place as part of an overall effort to prevent spam emanating from the ISP's domain.
    First thing to try.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Account Information tab for your .Mac account preferences at the SMTP server selection, select the Server Settings button below the the .Mac SMTP server.
Enter 587 in place of 25 in the Server Port field and when finished, select OK to save the changed setting.
If this doesn't work, you need to contact your ISP. If you are accessing an email account and SMTP server that is provided by your ISP used for connecting to the internet with the Mail.app, in the interim select/use your ISP's SMTP server to send messages with your .Mac account which is invisible to all recipients.

  • Send and receive email using applescript without Mail.app?

How could I use applescript to send an email and check the email on the same account without adding those addresses to Mail.app. I tried using the 'sendmail' terminal command and that works pretty well for sending but how do I receive?

    Everything about fetchmail is here.

  • Using built in mail app- my gmail will send but won't recieve. ?

Already removed and re-add acct? And synced, date is correct.. Any ideas

Any ideas, guys?  I had a similar issue on iOS 6 but the move to iOS 7 fixed it.
Yesterday, I moved a whole bunch of e-mails from my Gmail archive (on the web interface) to my inbox.  Now my Mail app on iPhone is missing a whole chunk of my e-mails....not sure how to fix this!
Any advice would be most appreciated.  Thanks.
EDIT: I should add, when I cycle to the All Mail folder, I can see everything as normal...but the inbox in the Mail app is missing all e-mails from before yesterday evening, choosing to show only those that are from months ago (and even then, they're just ones I've sent, all the received ones are missing).

  • Missing emails in Mavericks mail app

    Hi guys
yes it's another complaint to Mavericks mail app. I had an email randomly disapeer in my inbox. this is for my Outlook/hotmail/live mail using the new IMAP settigns that microsoft posted a few months back. Not only has the message disapeared on me in my mail app inbox but it's also synced with my web mail!!! the one time microsofts IMAP actually works for me!!! Are Apple looking into this?? or are they just focusing on Gmail?
help would be great if anyone knows how to recover it. or will i just have to wait for it to right itself
also I've checked all sub folders, junk and trash and all other email accounts on the app...no luck
