Missing 4 years of TM backups after associating drive with new Mac

I have been running time machine backups since 2009 without a single problem on my 1 TB WD mybook drive. I recently bought a new iMac and got rid of my old Macbook. I was able to restore the iMac from my latest backup without issue. The problem started when I attempted my first backup from the new iMac. I don't remember the exact wording, but I was asked if I wanted to clean up the backups to work with the new computer. I said yes. About 20 mins in, the backup fialed because the disc was full, which was the first time I had ever seen that error. It said my backup was 500 GB, but I only had 460 GB available. When I opened up the time machine, I was shocked to see all my backups from 2009 - present were gone. The only backup showing was the very last one I did (and the one I restored my new iMac from).
Things to note:
I didn't do backups regularly (maybe once every few months), so I truly did have backups from 2009 on the disc.
I changed my "computer name" from "My Macbook" to "My iMac". When I open up the time machine drive, it only shows one backup from "My iMac"
I did repair the disc in the disc utility
I thought TM deleted old backups to make room. Why am I seeing this error?
I KNOW the backups are there somehwere. In fact, I was browsing through them just a few hours ago before I agreed to clean up the backups. I want to avoid wiping the drive because I do have things from those old backups I need.
I searched the forums and the web, but haven't been able to find an answer which has helped.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Exactly how did you put your data on the new Mac?
• Did you use Setup Assistant (preferred) when it first started up?
• Or did you create a new User Account, then use the Migration Assistant app later on?
• Or did you do something else -- if so, what?
• Did any home folder names change, even slightly?
Yes, I did use Setup Assistant when the new mac booted for the first time.
No
No
Yes. The OLD HDD was called Macintosh HD1. The iMac HDD is called Macintosh HD. Not sure if this matters though
I don't remember the exact wording, but I was asked if I wanted to clean up the backups to work with the new computer.
Could it have been this one:
If so, see #C13 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for the bad news.
Yes, I think that was the message I saw and I did indeed select "Start New Backup". So I suppose that means the data is corrupt.
Ok, so my old macbook disc was 500gb and the TM backup is 1TB. If everything was deleted, why am I running out of space when I try to create a new backup? This leads me to believe the data is still there and possibly still recoverable.
Thanks so much for all your help. Everyone here is awesome!

  • Time Machine: Cannot access old backups after migrating to a new mac

    Hello,
I have bought a new Mac (With Snow Leopard installed on it). I have used it for about half an hour to have fun with it.
Then, I have decided to use Time Machine & Migration Assistant to restore all my files from my old Mac (Leopard). The restoration was successful and I was very happy to see that all my files and settings were there.
However, when I try to access my old backups (the ones I have done prior to buying the new Mac), Time Machine says I do not have the permissions to access it.
Is there an way to fix this? I would like to be able to access these old files.

I am having a similar problem and do not understand the solution. I have a new Macbook and transferred my data from my Powerbook G4. However, I cannot access anything! There is a no entry sign on the folders and if I click them I get this message: 'The folder “Pictures” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.'
Help - but please, in simple language
    Thanks

  • Unable to backup to external hard drive with new Mac Mini

I have been using a 1TB iOmega MiniMax external hard drive to backup my Mac Mini that was running on OS X 10.6.8.  I recently replaced the Mac Mini with a newer model running on OS X 10.9.5.  I successfully recovered all my files from the backup hard drive onto the new Mac Mini.  However, since then I am not able to   do either an automatic Time Machine backup or a manual backup.  I'm wondering if I need to update the iOmega MiniMax driver to be compatible with the newer OS X.  So far I have not been able to locate any updated drivers.  The new Mac Mini is able to recognize the old data that were previously backed up, but will not complete a new backup.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks for the help.  When I got the new Mac Mini, I was able to restore all my files from the iOmega HD backup.  But since then each time I try a TM backup I see the in work wheel spinning (in Finder) but no backup is made.  No error messages are given.  I will try the trouble shooting list you sent.  Thanks again.

  • After replacing a failed hard drive with new one I inadvertently created a different account name(home/user) than the one in the Time Machine backup. Now I cannot restore the photos in iPhoto. What are my options?

After replacing a failed hard drive with new one I inadvertently created a different account name(home/user) than the one in the Time Machine backup. Now I cannot restore the photos in iPhoto. What are my options?

The best thing to do would be to start over. Use Setup Assistant this time.
Boot into Recovery, launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This operation will destroy all data on the volume. Quit Disk Utility and install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you transfer the data from one of your backups. For a walkthrough, see here:
    Using Setup Assistant
Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Old address still showing in contact after I edit with new address. However, it shows correct address when in edit mode. Is this a new glitch on the iPhone iOS 7?

    1) Is it a video clip? Something you recognize?  To be clear, it's displaying at a point in your exported movie but doesn't appear at all in the sequence?
    2) What are your sequence settings?  Right-click your sequence and choose "Item Properties" to verify.

  • Why are some clips missing after migrating to my new Mac?

My old Macbook Pro died so I got a new one and have migrated my data to the new one from a Time Machine backup. However, after doing this iMovie is telling me a lot of clips are missing. Many of them are still in tact, but in a lot of cases I see a message like: Missing File "clip-2012-09-13 07;52;06 (id)" is missing. Try reimporting the original source media. I'm using iMovie 10.0.6 and Yosemite (on both the old and new Mac).
Can anybody tell me how I can fix this?
    Thanks

If it matters, I have a Canon camcorder and imported the clips using a firewire cable. The external drive is connected via a second firewire cord to the other firewire port.

  • Restore Time Machine backup after hard drive crash

My hard drive on the mac book crashed, so I replaced it.  Now I need to get my time machine back up on the new drive.  I've already started using the computer and reinstalled lion, so I'm not getting the original "backup" screen.  How do I find my old time machine backups?

Your best bet is to do a full restore from your backups.  See #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • Cannot reload backup after hard drive failure

Hard drive failed. Managed to get data backed up off it onto DVD-R. Now have new hard drive with XP loaded. Have reloaded Ipod and all software including latest updater and version of Itunes. Itunes does not recognise the disc when it is inserted, so I have tried importing songs into the correct folder so that Itunes can see them, however, they do not show up in the Library. If I double click the relevant file on the DVD-R, I get a message saying that Windows doesn't know which program created the .m4u file. However, a quick search allows Itunes to open and play the file. How do I reimport all of the backed up data into the Library so that Itunes can see it straight away without the need for the DVD-R to be inserted each time? Many thanks. (Incidentally, managed to lose all data on the Ipod itself so only copy of library now lives on DVD-R)

Assuming that you have the actual .m4a, .m4p, or .mp3 music files on the DVD, just copy them to your PC's HD. Preferably in the same directory structure they were in under the old iTunes.
If you also backed up the ITL database file, you can recover your complete Library. If not, then you'll need to 'Add' the music files back into iTunes.
If your DVD backup does not have the folder/sub-folder structure copied, then copy the files to a 'holding folder', then File=>Add Folder within iTunes to rebuild the Library.
Post back if you have additional questions.

  • Ethernet adapter not working with new Mac Mini after NetRestore.

I'm currently working with an issue regarding Mini 4,1s and their difference from the main driver set in 10.6.4. I'm in an educational environment and attempting to effectively netrestore a hard drive image that was built on a Mini 3,1 with all possible updates made to the OS (10.6.4).
The new minis have no problem netbooting, and downloading the disc image from the server *over ethernet*. In fact, they do it in a very rapid fashion. The issue is that once the machines boot up, they no longer have ethernet capabilities. In fact, the ethernet device does not even appear in system profiler at all. After reading quite a lot about this problem, it appears that there is a difference in the driver set on the special "Mid-2010 Mini 4,1" update and the driver set found in a normal 10.6.4 install.
I have attempted various permutations of installing the Mid-2010 update, but most of them include having an existing 10.6.4 install that was not built on the Mini, and attempting to install the update over the install, or replacing the driver in suspect itself. The issue persists.
Is there something I'm missing, and is this a common problem?
tl;dr: non mac mini 10.6.4 installation copied on mac mini 4,1, and ethernet drivers don't work.

Thanks for your suggestion, I cloned my 1.83GHZ Mac Mini's main drive with Carbon Copy Cloner and restored it onto a new 2.4GHZ Mac Mini. Since the new Mac was replacing the older one's mother ship role in my HTPC setup, this method would ensure the easiest transition. Everything works fine, except that ethernet wont work, it did before, but doesn't now. I already tried several confirmed-working-by-me cables and no luck.
I tried your step and understand the logic behind them, but as soon as I replaced my files with the ones you suggested from my 2.4GHZ Mac Install Disc, the system reports some conflicts. I repaired permissions after and before this happens (tried twice, once after successfully restoring via Tim Machine) and still it occurred. After reboot Ethernet was still dead and so was WiFi. Luckily I was able to get everything back to normal by replacing the entire Extensions folder with the one prior to the changes. Restoring the two files alone would not do it.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • Can I keep backups when migrating to a new Mac?

I have an existing Mac with several years of backups in Time Machine. I've bought a new Mac. I'm going to use Setup Assistant to migrate everything from the old Mac to the new Mac (directly, not through Time Machine), and will retire the old Mac. Will I then have access to the old backups on my new Mac, or are the backups tied to a particular computer?

  • Time Machine backup to Maxtor Drives with Powerbook G4

Been trying to use Time Machine to backup a G4 Powerbook, via the FireWire port to a Maxtor One-Touch 1 and also a Maxtor One-Touch 2 external drive. I have formatted both drives with a 250G partition for a PowerPC Mac. Using either drive, the Backup begins normally, but after 20-200Meg of backup time, the entire system simple stops and crashes the MAC. My only option is to Power down.
Is the Maxtor One-Touch 1 and/or 2 simply not compatible with Time Machines and/or the firewire port on the PowerBook G4? I also tried the USB port on both drives with the same results.
The drives format, partition, and erase correctly. Time Machine simply crashes at some point shortly after beginning the backup. Any thoughts? Thanks.

    Hi Bob,
Try reformatting the drive and then restarting your backups. [Here's|http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/apple/leopard-disk-utility-format-issue-scre ws-with-time-machine-but-theres-an-easy-fix-316573.php] a tutorial on how to make sure that Disk Utility formats the drive correctly.
After that, try your backup again, and let me know if it doesn't work!

  • No access to old mac's backup with new mac

    Hi forum,
I bought a new aluminium MacBook to replace my "old" black MacBook, and migrated all data and settings with the assistant via Ethernet-cable. Worked fine.
Now, I want to continue using the over 1 year of TM-backups created with the old mac, because there are some files that are archived in these backups.
To achieve that, I found some terminal-voodoo on the internet to update the MAC-numbers within the old backup-files and tried those. Now, TM continues to backup into the same folder on my TM-hdd.
BUT whenever I try to access a folder backed up with my old MacBook, I get an error-message saying that the folder cannot be opened, because I do not have the rights to do this. That's all, no way to enter any password or so.
    What can I do?
    Thanks in advance,
    Michi

That may have been a major error. That's for the same computer with either a new hard drive or new logic board, not a different computer. You've "fooled" TM into mixing backups from two different computers, and it likely has made the old ones un-usable.
BUT whenever I try to access a folder backed up with my old MacBook, I get an error-message saying that the folder cannot be opened, because I do not have the rights to do this.
Are you doing this via the Finder, or the TM interface?
If at all possible, use the TM interface, either via +Enter Time Machine+ or +Browse Other Time Machine Disks.+
If not, you might be able to copy some data via the Finder, but it's going to be tedious with all sorts of problems. First, as you see, you don't have permission to read the files. Second, you won't get the "metadata" -- permissions, creation date, open-with info, etc. Third, if you do manage to copy them, their permissions probably won't be what you want.
As a last resort, try this:
Navigate, via the Finder, on your TM disk, to the backup you want, then to the folder you want. Select it, then select Get Info.
At the bottom of that panel, click the padlock, then enter your Administrator's password.
Then click the plus sign at the bottom of the panel; that should give you a place to select your ID.
Clicking on that should give you "Read only" rights.
Clicking on the "gear" icon should let you apply those rights to the enclosed items.
Also, for future reference, do NOT depend on TM to keep "archive" copies of things you've deleted from your internal HD. TM will, eventually, delete them; you cannot prevent it. If you want to keep them, make other copies somewhere else.

  • Move iPhone Backup from Old PC to New Mac

    Hello--
I currently use a PC to sync my iPhone but making the change to a Mac. What's the best way to switch the iPhone backup files, applications, etc from the PC to the Mac?
    Thanks!

Your computer's backup external drive should have enough storage capacity to store your entire iTunes library along with all other important data such as documents, contacts, and photos.
Copy the iTunes named folder in your Music folder to your external backup drive, or if you have a wireless network you can transfer data between the two computers via your wireless network or by networking the computers in some other fashion.
With iTunes quit on your Mac, place the iTunes named folder from your PC in your Music folder on your Mac. You will need to authorize your Mac with your iTunes account with iTunes if you haven't already done so.
Your iPhone's backup that is created and maintained by iTunes is not stored in the iTunes folder, and there is no need to copy this from one computer to another. ITunes on your Mac should create a new backup for your iPhone with the first sync or you can do this manually. Control-click on your iPhone under Devices in the iTunes source list and at the menu window that appears, select Back Up.
