"Missing" 4GB+ of previous iPad storage space

A couple of us have noticed that after restoring our "New" iPads from iPad 2 backups about 4GB+ of previously storage space has disappeared.  Anybody else seeing this?  If so, does anyone know what happened to it?  New app requirements, perhaps?  Just curious.

The apps that have been enhanced for the retina display are signifcantly larger.

  • ICloud photo library and iPhone/iPad storage space

    Hi,
I use iCloud photo library beta for some time and it's a great feature for apple product. However, I'm a bit worried about what happend after some time. Now I have 20Gb of storage in iCLoud and 16Gb iPhone 6 and iPad air 2. On both of them is the "optimize iPhone/iPad storage" checked. What will happen after I would put 20Gb of photos to the iCloud and the iPhone and iPad wouldn't have enough storage to handle them (even when the photos are optimize)?
Thanks for any response or a link where it is discussed,
    Jakub

    Hi jakudo,
"optimize iPad/iPhone storage" means that photos don't have to take any storage capacity of your devices, if you are using your devices storage capacity e.g. for other content like music, apps etc. Your photos will be stored in the cloud and only a some of them are stored locally as long as you have storage space available. The only thing you have to do, is upgrading for more storage as soon as your passing the 20 GB.
    With kind regards,
    David

  • Why is my iPad storage space filling up when transferring purchases to iTunes?

    Hi there,
    Hopefully somebody can help.
I recently bought an iPad & it's been great, but I noticed when I was Transferring my purchases from my Pad to my Mac, my iPads disk space starting filling up under the 'Other' catagory.
Why is it doing it? Surely it shouldn't be putting anything on to my Pad?
Now my storage space is almost full, but I have nothing on my iPad that wasn't there before.
    Thanks for your time.
    Paul

Okay, first thing is to look at all your iTunest tab settings like music, movies, podcasts, etc... to make sure you don't have it set to automatically download new content onto the iPad.  If so, anything you've purchased on your computer will then turn around and try to load itself onto your iPad.
The next thing would be to do a restore to factory settings and then re-sync using your most recent backup, assuming you have a good backup.  Once in a blue moon the data on the iPad can get corrupt somehow and give all kinds of false readings on how much memory is being used, etc...  The restore usually fixes it.
    Best.

  • Ipad Storage space, incorrectly using iCloud?

I have an iPad mini and I keep getting notices about my storage being used up. When i go to settings and check the usage it shows 11.9GB are being used by my photos. I have less than 30 pics saved on the actual device and everything else on my iCloud. but in the settings I also show I have 5GB of 5GB available for storage space. I don't understand!! When I am on my device and in the pictures app I see the cloud that says "shared" beneath it. All my pictures are there. Is this not the cloud? When I select a picture and select "iCloud" it sends it to whichever album I have selected in the shared space. Is this not the iCloud? What am I doing wrong!?

Any photos that you can see on your iPad are stored on your iPad, even if they are also stored in iCloud.  This is done to allow you to be able to access them when you are in locations where you can't connect to the internet.  In other words, adding the photos to a shared stream will not keep them from also being stored on your iPad.  This is likely change later this fall with the introduction of iOS 8 and iCloud Photo Library (see https://www.apple.com/icloud/preview/).

  • IPad storage space

I delete some free Issues of VOGUE magazine. However, why the disk space still remains the same? How can I free up more available storage space?

Remove some of the media that already exists on the device.  Apps take very lttle space in comparison.

  • How come Photostream uses 734Mb of my iPad storage space, when Photostream is disabled, and there are no photos on the iPad?

I recently disabled Photo-stream on all my iOS devices, because I import them manually anyway, and the logic in Photostream simply did not catch on with me.
On my iPad, no matter that I stopped any photos from syncing to it from iPhoto, and got a completely blank photos archive on the iPad, it still claims under "usage", that I use 111Mb on my Photo Library, and a whopping 737Mb on Photostream.
Since this iPad is completely photo-free, it is a great annoyance that it still reserves 848Mb of space for photos. My available space on the iPad is 1.2Gb, and I have trouble updating some apps because of the missing empty.
I don't want to delete apps, when there is actually enough space, but Apple simply wont let me administer my space. I tried swiping right over "Photostream" and choose "Delete", but nothing happens from this.
And BTW, I did disable Photostream from all my iOS devices, and my iMac.

I also have this exact same problem - 35 photos taking up 1.5gb!
seems like a strange coincidence... and no Matt - this is not the Photo Stream - that is 258mb
with only a 16gb phone this is a substantial chunk of my storage.
anyone have a real explanation for this??

  • My iPad keeps showing a message that I have run out of storage space.  I purchased more iCloud space in settings, but this message is still showing.  It also won't sync when I plug in to my computer...??

My iPad keeps showing a message that I have run out of storage space.  I have purchased more iCloud space in settings, but I am still getting this message.  I also am not able to sync my iPad in iTunes when plugging in to my computer.

The storage space is the iPad storage space, not iCloud storage space. What size Ipad do you have?
How much space is your Other using? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Purchased extra storage space...not working..?

I just bought extra storage space for the icloud so that I could download a movie onto my ipad.  When I now go to download the movie it still says that there isn't enough space...does it take a while for the purchase to go through or am I doing something wrong here..?

Storage space in iCloud has nothing to do with storage space on iPad.
You need to delete items on iPad to make room for the movie.

iCloud doesn't give you more storage on your device, it only gives you more storage in iCloud to sync data, store your backups, etc.  If you're running out of space on your iPad you'll have to delete some data off your iPad to free it up, such as syncing some of your music or other media off your iPad.
You can check how much free space is available on your iPad by going to Settings>General>Usage and looking at the Available number at the top.

  • Storage Spaces UI missing disks when a controller reports the same UniqueID for all attached disks (e.g. Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8)

Summary: The Storage Spaces UI has several problems when there are more than 21 physical disks available to Storage Spaces.
I have 28 SATA disks connected over 6 controllers. 2 are used for an Intel motherboard RAID1 for OS (PhysicalDisk0), so that leaves 26 data disks for Storage Spaces. [The plan is to get to 36 data disks in due course by adding disks (this 36-bay chassis: http://www.supermicro.com/products/chassis/4U/847/SC847A-R1400LP.cfm)]
Initially, there were 23 data disks (5x 1TB, 1x 640GB, 14x 500GB, 3x 250GB) as PhysicalDisk1-23 (in that order), which I put into a storage pool. I created a parity disk over all 23 disks. It looks like it is working fine, albeit very slowly on writes.
I've now added 3 more 4TB disks, as PhysicalDisk24-26, and taken them offline, and have now noticed errors in the Storage Pools UI in the Server Manager. For example:
    * No more than 21 disks ever show up in the "Physical Disks" area in the lower right. When the 23 disks are connected, only the first 21 show up in the pool I created. With 26 disks connected, only the first 20 show up in the pool, and only 1 more of the
new 3 (PhysicalDisk26) shows up in the Primordial group.
    * In the Properties of the parity Virtual Disk created over the 23 disks, the disks are shown incorrectly. Again, only 21 disks are shown, and PhysicalDisk26 is incorrectly shown as part of the virtual disk. See image:
    * Using the New Storage Pool Wizard, I cannot add more than 1 of the new 3 disks to a new Storage Pool (only PhysicalDisk26 is available). And the details incorrectly refer to PhysicalDisk21. See image (a WDC WD2500JD-22H is a 250GB disk, not a 4TB disk).
Thus I cannot use the new disks in a new storage pool.
According the blog post at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012/01/05/virtualizing-storage-for-scale-resiliency-and-efficiency.aspx:
    Q) What is the minimum number of disks I can use to create a pool? What is the maximum?
You can create a pool with only one disk. However, such a pool cannot contain any resilient spaces (i.e. mirrored or parity spaces). It can only contain a simple space which does not provide resiliency to failures. We do test pools comprising multiple hundreds
of disks – such as you might see in a datacenter. There is no architectural limit to the number of disks comprising a pool.
However, the UI currently does not seem to correctly work with more than 21 physical disks. Please advise.
    Using Server 2012 RC.
    Hardware: Supermicro X8SAX (BIOS v2.0), Intel i7-920 2.67GHz, 6x 2GB DDR3-1333 (certified Crucial CT25664BA1339.16SFD)
Disk controllers: 2x RAIDCore BC4852 (PCI-X, final 3.3.1 driver) (15 ports used), 2x Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 (PCIe, 4.0.0.1200 Marvell driver to allow >2TB disks) (6 ports used), Sil 3114 (PCI, latest 1.5.20.3 driver) (1 port used), motherboard Intel
in RAID mode (4 ports used for data, plus 2 for OS RAID1).

An update. I added 16x SATA disks across 2x Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8. All 16 disks report the same UniqueID.
I have 25 disks in the pool now (23 as parity; 2 as journal added via PowerShell). 10 of these are on the two AOC-SASLP-MV8 controllers. Only the first 16 disks show up in the UI, so 9 are missing from the UI - which is consistent with this UI bug where
only one disk per UniqueID shows up. PowerShell does work to manage the SS.

  • How is it possible to cancel (not suspend) a video download from iTunes Store (iPad under iOs 6)? (I do not have sufficient storage space on my iPad)

    Hi,
I am facing the following difficulty with my iPad (model MD369NF/A) under iOs 6.1.3.
I have bought 2 videos on iTunes Store, but I do not succeed in downloading them: an error message mentions that iPas does not have enough storage capacity.
As a matter of face, when I look at the way the storage is used, I find “Others” for around 10 Go (is there some king of reserved space for the downloading of videos from iTunes Store?), and only a very small number of Mo available.
I would simply like to cancel the downloading of the 2 videos, and hope that it would free the "Others" storage space (in the hypothesis that "Others" is space reserved for videos once downloaded), but I do not manage to do it. I can suspend the downloading, but I do not see how to cancel it.
Would you have a solution to propose ?
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Nicolas

    Hey Nicolas36,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The following article outlines issues with free space, capacity, and a large amount of "other" space. You'll want to connect your iPad to your computer with iTunes to follow the steps:
iOS: 'Not enough free space' alert when trying to sync
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1503
One symptom of this issue will be displayed in iTunes where the Capacity indicator for the iOS device will report a large amount of "Other" disk usage for the device. To resolve this issue:
    - Turn off the music or photo sync option in iTunes for the device.
    - Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
    - Turn the music and photo sync options for the device on again.
    - Click Apply again to try to sync the device to iTunes.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • ICloud storage space used up by old data from 1st gen iPad I traded in nearly 2 yrs ago for an iPad Mini. Can't backup any info for mini or new 6 plus. How can I access this old data to clear it out?

My iCoud storage space is being used up by old data from a 1st  generation iPad I traded in nearly 2 yrs ago for an iPad Mini. The people at the sprint store where I made my trade were supposed to transfer everything over from my old iPad to the new Mini once they backed up the old device to iCloud. Well, long story short, none of the data ever got transferred to the new iPad, but it all got backed to iCloud, eating up all my storage space. Here I am almost 2 years later, and I've never been able to back-up my iPad mini. What's worse, My iPhone 4 wasn't backed up that whole time, and now I can't back-up my data from my new iPhone 6 Plus to iCloud either. Trying to find creative ways to store and save my information and data between all my devices is getting to be ridiculous. I don't want to upgrade my storage space though...just want to clear out a great deal of what is already being stored. How can I access this old data to clear it out?

The only way to access data from an iCloud backup is to restore it to your device.  You could, for example, back up your iPad mini to your computer using iTunes (by connecting it, opening iTunes, then going to File>Devices>Back Up and choosing to back up apps and transfer purchases when prompted), then erase it and restore the old iPad backup (as explained here: iCloud: Restore or set up your iOS device from iCloud), save any recovered data you want to keep, then restore your iTunes backup back to your iPad mini (by connecting it to your computer, opening iTunes, then going to File>Devices>Restore from Backup).
Once you're done with the old backup, delete it from your account to free up the space.

  • How can I free up more storage space on my IPad?

How can I free up storage space on my IPad?  I have deleted all books, music, magazines, email, messages, most games, and I still have only 1.1 GB available.  There are files in Diagnostics and Usage that I can't figure out how to delete.  Can it be that and something else?  Any suggestions are welcomed.  Synced just yesterday and that didn't help.  Thanks!

In iTunes, you can click on the iPad Device and check what type of files are using storage on your iPad. On the Summary tab, at the bottom of the page, there is a chart showing what type of files are on your device. They are separated into groups by color.
Once you have identified the color that's taking most of your storage you might be able to determine which files need to be removed.
Also, are you using DropBox with a lot of favorites selected or a few larger files? Dropbox favorite files are kept on your device, even when it isn't connected to the internet. This could also be true with other file sharing services like Sugarsync.

  • I can't update the software on my iPad 3 even though I've got enough storage space

I can't update the software on my iPad 3 even though I've got enough storage space, can you help? It is to update to IOS 7.0.4

Storage space on iCloud is not a substitute for storage space on the iPad. You need sufficient storage space on your iPad to accomodate the download. How much Available space do you have? Go to Settings>General>Usage
How much space is used by your Other? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space.

  • "more storage space needed" prompt won't go away.  Can't power off iPad to do so either.  Suggestions?

The "Need more storage space" prompt came up, and has options to close or go to settings.  It's frozen, but active.  Neither option works.  Stuck on screen and can't do anything else, beyond activate suri.  Suggestions?
