Missing 50GB's after installing Leopard on new HD-best way to re-install

I installed Leopard on a G5 tower with 2 new 750 GB's seagate drives. Disk Utility shows a total capacity of 698.6 GB's out of 750 GB's so I am missing 50 GB's. Also first aide hangs up on Verify/repair disk permissions. It looks like I am dealing with an "erase" issue since their must be other files on the new drives that are causing problems, My new thoughts on this are:
(1)For MacHD 2, in DU click on the "hard Drive(698.6 GB ST3750640AS)/security option-zero out data/erase
(2) For MacHD 1 (Leopard) insert the installation disk/go to option-erase and install/ok
Will this work or is there a better way to go about it.
Thanks for looking at my Post

Most drives are listed as unformatted size and take advantage of the "1000" kilo which is really 1024.
Also a system with folders, &c. takes up space with no actual files.
Your "loss" of less than 10% is normal and expected.
For example, the "250GB" HD on this MBP as reported by DU says:
Total Capacity : 232.9 GB (250,059,350,016 Bytes)
But I have not lost 17GB.
Since your drive is 3 times the size of mine, I would expect to see a "loss" of 51 GB (3x17) which is exactly what you are reporting.

Missing file system after installing in SSD MacBook
    Hi All
I recently installed a SSD drive in my Macbook, I used the Disk Utility to clone the old HDD.
When i reboot the machine with the new disk I get the image of a folder with question mark.
If i reboot the machine again and hold the alt key at the chime I can see two disks.
One called SSD and another called Recovery.
if i choose the SSD the OS starts as normal and if i choose the recovery option and check the disk with disk utility
it tells me that everything is fine.
Any ideas how i can make the machine boot as it should without having to hold down the alt key a start up??

Hi i tried this and just got the big symbol of doom at start up.
However, a little terminal witchcraft did the trick!
sudo bless -mount /Volumes/"Macintosh HD" -setBoot

  • HT203167 I am missing my audiobooks after upgrading ipod to new os

I am missing my audiobooks after upgrading ipod to new os.

Even though Apple iTunes has reached agreements with the Music and Film industries, they cannot offer Audiobooks over the Cloud.
So, when you buy an Audiobook, you must download it to your main machine and hold it there. If you upgrade your hardware (iPod, iPhone, or iPad) or IOS software, the audiobook on that device disappears and you will have to download it again from your main machine. This means wiring it up "old school" and not wifi.
As a consequence, it is advisable never to buy an audiobook from a portable device as it will not sync and will not be available for download elsewhere. I did this and I had to ask Apple to "push" a new file so that I could download it on my main machine.
    Hope this helps.

  • Missing Solaris MDBexec after install/reboot

I installed Solaris 10 on a system with the DVD (iso checksummed ok). After install when I reboot the system I get the message "Missing Solaris MDBexec" and the computer hangs. What is happening?
System has 256MB memory, Memorex DVD drive, 10GB hard drive and Intel Celeron MMX 500MHz processor.

Thanks for the info. I had to install using option 4
and delete all the partitions including the boot
partition to get it to go in correctly. That is, you had the system installed with a separate boot partition
when the HDD complained about the "missing Solaris MDBexec"?
Does it work now, after removing all partitions and installing from
scratch, without the separate boot partition?

  • BeatsAudio missing/replaced after Installing Windows 8.1

    Hi,
When I bought my laptop (HP Pavilion 15-p044tu) it had Windows 7 installed. Also, BeatsAudio controler installed.  Then I installed Windows 8.1 64bit (clean install, not upgrade from 7) and it required a full format of my HDD. So all the drives got erased including the one which had Driver & OS Backup stored.
After Installing win8.1, I went to HP support page for my laptop and manually downloaded the drivers (Including Audio drivers) from there. Please note that, some of the drivers were installed automatically by windows and there is no "unkown device" showing in my device manager's "other devices" tree.
The problem I'm facing is that there is no BeatsAudio interface anywhere. It's been replaced by "Realtek HD audio". Even in the control panel where there was a Beats Icon, there is a realtek icon now. I've searched other forums where they've suggested installing IDT audio driver which will bring back Beats but there is no such driver on my laptop driver page. I've tried the windows 7 drivers but got no positive result. Also I've tried installing IDT drivers from different laptop models from different windows version but it says, "Hardware detected is not supported by this IDT Audio Driver" & stops installation process.
I've also tried installing it in safe mode, but got same result. Note that my audio is working as normal with realtek, but the soun is lower than before. I just need the beats audio back.
Please help me out with this issue. I've searched your forum but didn't get any solution (just different IDT drivers which resulted the same thing).
    Waiting for a reply.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
The beats audio interface is provided by the audio software installer - this can be IDT or Realtek depending on the hardware.
    Try the following.
Download the Realtek Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp66001-66500/sp66107.exe
When done, hold down the Windows key and press R.  Into the Run window type devmgmt.msc and hit enter.
Expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the Realtek device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, download and reinstall the Chipset driver on the following link.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp66001-66500/sp66094.exe
When the reinstallation has completed, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Let Windows fully load - it may automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete.  Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the Realtek Audio installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, restart the notebook again and let Windows fully load for a couple of minutes before trying to launch the Beats interface from Windows control panel.

  • Programs missing from menu after install?

Hey guys just got my install up and running, using Cinnamon desktop.
So, after installing a program via pacman it wont populate in my menu until I reboot. For instance chrome, I can launch it from the terminal but can find it when I search for it under applications, once I reboot its right where it should be.
any ideas, I like to not reboot every time I install a package.

I don't use Cinammon so I can't test it, but maybe you can just log out and log back in?  I know it isn't a solution but it should be quicker than rebooting.

  • Missing tiger features after install

    hello
for christmas i bought my wife a power mac g5 2.3 ghz & bought my gilrs an imac g5. both came with tigger.
i inherited my wifes old g4 mdd and went out and bought a family pack tigger 10.4.3. i wiped the g4 and installed tigger. unfortunately i found out i could not my account onto the mdd from my old g4 400 mhz with agp due to firmware issues. so, i did everything mannually.
anyway, im noiticing there are features on my wifes and girls copy of tigger that seem to be missing on mine. such as:
-when i move files in and out of folders, no neato sound. i checked sound in prefs, they have 3 options, mine has 2.
    -no ripply effect with widgets
    - i have to wait a real long time before i can highlighti text under a folder or icon, if i do it to quick (or slow!), the folder or file will open, irritating.
are there some major subtle diffs between factory installed tigger and retail version? or did i miss sometyhing on the install?
    thanks
    wayne

    Hello Nut Case:
This knowledge base article explains why you do not get the ripple effect:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301347
The effect is hardware based - no setting required.
The other differences are, I suspect, a function of the platform rather than your install.

  • Starting with a new iMac, best way to organise photos

My old computer macbook pro, was overflowing with badly filed photos, projects and files. As I start with a clean slate, my new iMac my question is the best way to be keeping things, I use illustrator mostly for complex surface patterns.  I have photos galore in i-photo, some even have the same auto file number sequence as I use multiple sd cards.  For my photos, should I use bridge, i-cloud, is iPhoto old school now.  I am not going to just dump my old stuff over and want to do it properly, I promise not to be unorganised on my new iMac (promise).  Also, a brief explanation of when you would use Raw, over Lightroom, over Photoshop or visa versa, or is it just a personal choice.  The more I learn about software the more confused I get.
    Thanks & much appreciated
    Regards Vicky

I do understand the reference to the cloud not being about a specific app. I also understand that you, Vicky, are not quite sure which app to use with your fresh start. I am not sure it is horrible to ask here which app(s), workflow, or organizational system might be best to institute, given access to all the various apps available in CC.
I am not quite sure what you are doing, or what your previous workflow was, in part because of your mention of Adobe Illustrator for complex surface patterns. Were it not for that, between your title, and your reference to photos galore, I might suggest Lightroom. It is indeed in part a database, with an ability to handle, and organise, a very large number of photos. In addition to good developing and batch developing capabilities, as well as an ability to tag, as well as add to and manipulate metadata on both import and export, I find it useful. Were I to begin using Illustrator more, which I actually plan to do, I believe I'd either lean on bridge a bit more, very likely in conjunction with exported LR files, or see if it were in any way possible to set up AI as an external editor in LR, though at this point I've no idea if that is possible, or desired.
As to a specific workflow and system of organization, I feel that is quite subjective. For myself, I find myself creating a Library in LR for each Year, (though I could see a pro event photographer creating one for each event), and then importing my SD cards by copying as DNG, embedding the RAW, and setting up the file name to be the YearxxxxMonthxxDayxx_Hourxx24MinutexxSecondxx, with folders created for each month and day. That way, everything is ordered chronologically, even within the OS folders, and the filenames are consistent and unique. I also add metadata for the creator, etc. I then create Collections for each shoot I'm actually focussing on. From LR I can jump to PS or external third party addons, and return after I am done.
There are specific books and videos out there suggesting efficient ways of organizing and processing large numbers of images, and there is no, one right way. It largely depends on what you are comfortable with, and the way your mind works.
Best of luck to you; I know I'll need a bit, and a bit of self-discipline to buckle down and institute a consistent system myself.

  • Crooked stickers / decals on my new X220 - best way to remove ?

ok, is it just me or are other also extremely annoyed by the fact that they just shelled out over a grand for a notebook and it arrives with all stickers put on there crooked.
From the energy star sticker on the outside to the Windows 7 decal, the lenovo enhanced experience and the intel inside.
it is like buying a 911 and the 911 logo on the back is crooked !!!
why do they not just leave them off instead of making it look like a cheap notebook ???
(click i have this question too or reply here please)
and on a second note - what is the best way to remove said decals since i do not and cannot live with them like this and the soft touch surface makes it a pain in the butt to remove them.
blowdryer, razor blade and goo-gone ? (extremely careful to only use the blade to lift the sticker not touch the notebook)
and on a positive note - i am pretty amazed at the battery time i am getting on the new machine and the speed of the i7 and the 6GB of RAM. but i am still uninstalling crap and installing all the things i need
(see also Firefox 13.0 and password manager not working AGAIN thread).....
thanks in advance for your replies.
PS: yes, i am aware i am suffering from OCD - but still ....
someone is already getting paid to put them on there - why not do it right ?

if a chemical is needed to clean the residue, off-the-shelf rubbing alchohol is best.   'goo gone' is petrolium-based and can damage or discolor the plastic.   i agree with lead_org though—they'll likely just pull off without much of a fight.
the decals are there because of regulations and contractual advertising.   energy star devices require a decal stating compliance.   intel and microsoft require decals as part of including their products with PCs.   PC manufacturers could pay intel and microsoft extra to not include the decals but the costs would be passed onto the system price and consumers would complain about the increase.
given how easy it is to remove the decals, i pull them off when a system arrives and enjoy a clean palmrest.

  • Need to transfer Logic from old Macbook Pro to new iMac - Best Way???

Hey Everybody. I've got a new iMac showing up tomorrow which I couldn't be more excited about. I need to transfer/add all my Pro Audio Apps (Logic, Ableton, Native Instruments, Rob Papen, etc.) as well as iWork to the new computer but don't know the best way to do it. I could try and learn to do a formal "migrate" but I would prefer a clean install of all my programs.
Let me know if you have any tips! Thank you for your time!

When you turn on your machine for the first time it will ask you if you want to migrate from another Mac, simply choose yes and follow the on-screen directions. If your old machine has a Firewire 800 connection get a cable like this if it only has FW 400 then get a cable like this. You may be able to find these at your local computer store if not then as you can tell Amazon has them as well as many other online suppliers.
Your migration should be very straight forward, simply ensure your old machine is has run all software updates and is in good working order. As in any many change ensure you backup the old machine prior to starting the operation. Within a few hours all the information should should have migrated and you will be able to pick up where you left off on the old machine.

  • New MBP - Best way to care for battery?

Not sure if this is necessary anymore, but I am receiving my new MBP in the mail later today. What is the best way to care for the battery? Should I plug the MBP into the wall for an amount of time before turning it on, or at least wait until it is fully charged before turning it on for the first time? Is anything like that even necessary anymore?
    Thanks,
    Keith

    Here's what Apple recommends:

Best use is frequently and lightly. Be sure to calibrate your battery every two months or so:

  • IMac and new MBPro, best way to sync

    hello all,
I have an iMac and a nice shiny new MBPro.
What is the absolute best, and easiest, way to sync Mail and Docs between them both?
I use my iMac when working on big University assignments but want to make sure there is a copy of what I am working on on my MBP when I open the lid, I also need the same for email so both machines are always up to date with what is going on in my life.
Am I right in thinking that iCloud is the best way to achieve all of this as it will also allow me to access any of my files when I might be using my iPad as well?
Thank you for helping a numpty on his way.
    Gordies

Am I right in thinking that iCloud is the best way to achieve all of this as it will also allow me to access any of my files when I might be using my iPad as well?
Yes. You get 5GB of free storage space.
Follow the instructions for setting up an iCloud account on your Macs and iPad here >  Apple - iCloud - Learn how to set up iCloud on all your devices
What is the absolute best, and easiest, way to sync Mail and Docs between them both?
When you setup iCloud on your Macs, you'll go to System Preferences > iCloud
Make sure Mail & Notes and Documents & Data are selected.
On the iPad you'll tap Settings > iCloud then switch on Mail and Documents & Data
iCloud main support page including System Status >  Apple - Support - iCloud
