Missing and bad colors burning to DVD

I'm a newbie to IDVD and tried burning my first project - a 4 minute slideshow from IMovieHD, with Ken Burns effects, no transitions, one fade-out and music.
I exported from IMovie to IDVD , best quality, NTSC, burned the disc, and it ran fine, music great, but everything was tinged green, missing reds totally.
Everything looked perfect in IDVD Preview. Used Verbatim -R DVDs. Any helpful hints out there?
Thanks,
-Woody

Hi, Woody,
everything was tinged green, missing reds totally.
Wow! That is different! Since you cannot depend on Preview to catch all errors, try to save your project to disc image. Edit->Save as disc image. See this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
If it saves fine, view it using DVD player to see if you still get the color distortion. Follow Len Goff's instructions here: Len Goff, "G4 won't recognize DVD-R" #2, 12:53am Oct 14, 2005 CDT
If the color is still off, then it is an application problem. If not, it is a media problem. Verbatim is supposed to be the best, but maybe you got one from a rare bad batch.
If it is the media, try a different brand. See this thread for suggestions: http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?7@@.68b79e4d/5
Then, burn the disc image to DVD. See this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006
Good luck!

The current Apple thinking is that the entire world has access to fast broadband and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that nothing could be further from the truth has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. That worked for some, but is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple. Also, you can complain bitterly here, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between using iCloud and burning DVDs:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD.

  • I made a movie on iMovie and went to burn to DVD and of course I could not...contacted Apple and they said to download an app to help solve this problem...i did..so I could finally burn a DVD, but it will not play on my DVD player...HELP!!!

I made a movie on IMovie and went to burn it to a DVD ...I could not do this so I contacted Apple..they had me download an App and then I could make a DVD...but it will not play on my DVD player...does anyone know how I can solve this problem.. I purchased this to make DVD's and now I can not do that!!

This is a known issue.  It really comes down to two key factors - what type of DVD are you burning to + what type of DVD player you have.
This article will help.  It's lengthy and can be technical in some parts but should shed some light on your problem.

Anyone knows what does it mean? Why I can't burn a dvd on the computer's player? THanks

I am using MPEG2 not AVC.
I tried recreating everything couple of times starting from exporting form premiere, but no luck. Then I decided not to re start from premiere but just try a new encore project. I imported Premiere encoded M2v video and WAV audio in Encore. This way I lost the chapter markers created in premiere, so I recreated chapters in encore, and created menu. And started to build the DVD. This time my file size shows at 22.4 GB (and not 267) - which is great. But it did not succeed in building the DVD - got error 14 - file format error.
When I created new Encore project, I chose 20 mbps data and edited encoding settings to 29.97 (as by default Encore was changing it to 23. something frames) - other settings were Min data rate at 7 (it does not let me increase that), taget rate 22 and max 30.
Any suggestions to resolve error 14?
    Thanks.

  • Loss of Colour balance and brightness when burning to  DVD

Hi new to Mac and having problems with photos and video that is fine when viewed in iphotos/ivideo/idvd etc or even when printed from or viewed on a PC. All looks great when assembled but as soon as the project is burned to DVD and played on a standalone player, images seem very red and dark. has anybody experienced the same ? do i need to overcompensate /adjust balance before assembling and burning a project. Any ideas would be very helpful.

John, I saw a reply you posted in July to a similar question on the
Premiere Elements forrum, which is good because I think I will have some
extra work to do on this project.
The MPG files originally came from material I originally edited in
Premiere Elements on a MacBook Pro. The source material was AVI files from
a miniDV camcorder. I shot multiple cameras on several nights of a
theatrical production. With the volume of footage and a lack of computing
horse-power, I decided to make shorter segments based on the scenes within
the play. I know this was far from an optimal work-flow (mea culpa) but
that is the reality I face. So now I am looking for the best way forward.
Short of re-editing the whole thing (now that I have CS5.5 on a PC), which
is out of the question, it sounds like my best option is to go back to the
Mac and export the individual scenes as something other than MPG's. I
assume that in Premiere Elements 9, I need to select "Share with
Computer", then NTSC-Widescreen, and then go to the Advanced menu. Should
I then ramp the quality up to maximum? Are there other settings I need to
adjust to maximize the output quality?
At this point, I do not care about the size of the output files, nor do I
care if each 10 minute scene requires all night to render. I just would
like to get better quality clips that I can then use in CS5.5 on my PC to
assemble the full show, added chapter titles, and then print to DVD using
Encore. Any advice you can offer would be most welcome.

  • Huey pro and bad colors with photoshop or on windows

I begin to be realy unhappy with my W700.
If somebody use here this material at full capability, it will notice than huey pro create an icc profil for the display monitor on Vista or Seven.
If you use as this the profil and leave association with Huey/monitor, the colors looks good on my W700 for the destop but are completly false on Photoshop, Acrobat or Windows photo display. The red is missing. Instead of the red color, i have somethint like a yellow/brown. If i want the red on theses softwares, i need to use a Lenovo Brightview profil (downloaded on the lenovo support)
Hardware problem or gadget technology ?
I wasting three days with no result. It seems than not a lot persons use this calibration display or checked it.

  • I made a movie in  Imovie and want to burn a DVD but don't want the Idvd  selections How did just burn my imovie the wayit is

How do I get my imovie to be burnt onto dvd without having Idvd's themes?

In iDVD it's not exactly possible to make a DVD without menu, but there's a few workarounds:
    1. Easy: Drop your iMovie in the autoplay box in iDVD's Map View, then set your autoplay item (your movie) to loop continously. Disadvantage: The DVD plays until you hit stop on the remote
    2. Still easy: If you don't want your (autoplay) movie to loop, you can create a black theme"by replacing the background of a static theme with a black background and no content in the dropzone (text needs to be black as well). Disadvantage: The menu is still there and will play after the movie. You don't see it, but your disc keeps spinning in the player.
On the other hand, you could also place a text saying "The End" in that menu ....
    3. Easy enough but needs 3rd party software: Toast lets you burn your iMovie to DVD without menu - just un-check the appropriate check box
    4. The "hard way": postproduction with myDVDedit
    Tools necessary: myDVDedit ( http://www.mydvdedit.com )
    • create a disc image of your iDVD project, then double-click to mount it.
    • Extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a location of your choice. select the VIDEO_TS folder and hit Cmd + I to open the Inspector window
    • Set permissions to "read & write" and include all enclosed items; Ignore the warning.
    • Open the VIDEO_TS folder with myDVDedit. You'll find all items enclosed in your DVD in the left hand panel.
    • Select the menu (usually named VTS Menu) and delete it
    • Choose from the menu File > Test with DVD Player to see if your DVD behaves as planned. If it works save and close myDVDedit.
    • Before burning the folders to Video DVD, set permissions back to "read only", then create a disc image burnable with Disc Utility from a VIDEO_TS folder using Laine D. Lee's DVD Imager:

  • Sending .mov file to client and can't burn to DVD

I am sending a proof .mov file to a client that is windows based. Is there any burning software that will burn a .mov file and play on a windows machine without me converting it to a .AVI file? If I do have to convert it to a .AVI file will there be resolution or quality loss and will they even be able to burn that? They have NERO as their burning software, im using toast titanium and have quicktime pro. thanks

Toast 8 is the answer. Clients want to get something they can play EASY. DVD works on the TV and PC and needs nothing software wise. Worth the money. Plus the video quality looks good enough but really is not good enough to steal and edit.

  • Fades look bad once burned to DVD

I have standard-def (NTSC) DV footage of a concert (probably filmed in LP mode, as it was a long concert) that I'm doing very simple work on in FCP (I'm replacing the audio with a better recording, and trimming ends). Whenever I put in a fade from or to black, it looks terrible on a DVD. The back wall of the stage (white, lit more in the center than the edges) shows nasty stair-stepping instead of even gradation from light to dark.
    What I've tried so far:
Working the sequence on a DV timeline (how I started, as the tape is DV); using sequences with ProRes 422 NTSC, Uncompressed 8-bit, and Uncompressed 10-bit settings, and rendering the captured footage to the sequence; using both opacity and dissolves (I tried Cross Dissolve, Fade In Fade Out Dissolve, and Additive Dissolve, all with slugs abutting the clip); exporting to Compressor directly, and encoding in 2-pass VBR Best, 1-pass VBR, and 1-pass CBR; and exporting a QT movie, then going to Compressor and trying those three settings.
OK, so I'm pretty new at this, and I know I'm working with less than ideal source footage, but I have read the manuals and searched the forums. There has to be a way to make a fade look decent, right folks? Right?
Thank you to all in advance. PS: I can't quite tell if my problem is in FCP, Compressor, or DVDSP. On the FCP timeline, there seems to be some of the stairstepping, but it doesn't look nearly as awful as it does on the final DVD. So if I posted in the wrong forum, please excuse me and redirect me to where I should post.

It's not the source material, it's your encoding settings. You need to use a higher bitrate.
working in ProRes from DV source is a waste of everything, especially disk space, but also time. You achieve nothing.
    How long is your show?
If you go directly to Compressor for your MPG2, you can make several adjustments but explaining them is way beyond these little posties. You can achieve a bit more video headroom by processing your soundtrack separately to AC3. Again, beyond the scope of a mere forum thread. It's all in the manual and in various DVDSP tutorials located here and there around the net. Be sure to explore

  • I want to burn a DVD and keep the pictures in the files

I am using iPhoto 8.  I have 46 albums that I created for one vacation.  I have organized all of the pictures from 5 cameras and want to burn a DVD keeping the pictures in those albums so others can create a slideshow from them.  When I burned a DVD the files did not show up, so all of the work was for nothing.  How can I burn the DVD and keep the files intact so other people do not need to do the same work that I have already completed?

As Terence mentioned for those with Macs and iPhoto select the albums you've created and use the Share ➙ Burn menu option.  This will create a mini library on the disk that others can view in iPhoto and run slideshows from the photos in the album or copy those albums into their library for more control.

  • 2 complete FCE projects, files moved or missing, and memory full----help!

    I have a
    MacBook Pro version 10.4.10
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    and purchased the FCE HD.
After completing FCE projects-exporting to iMovie-sharing it over to iDVD-and burn to DVD, I was and is still in a blur from what happens next.
When I tried to create another FCE project, it said low disc space, so I purchased a 160GB Seagate, and attempted to copy the finished FCE projects into the Seagate, but when I try and open the project so I'm certain if I need to go back and edit or burn another DVD, it will be there, then it says there are files missing, or error code 1309.
I then got nervous, read through the FCE .pdf for assistance, started moving files around, trying to copy whatever over to the external. Now, when I try and open the existing project, I can't
I may be over cautious, but because of it, I've used up all my memory. Now, I can't open the projects because I've moved the files around.
Right now, I am at a halt. Can anyone help me please, is there a way for me to reorganize my files so that I can open my existing FCE project as the final product, and then archive and move to the external drive, and still be able to open, edit, and burn again? I'm trying to clear the memory from harddrive so I can work on add'l FCE projects.
When I check Disk Utility for my Macintosh HD, the capacity is 148.7GB, and my available is 479.7 MB.
The 160GB Seagate's capacity is 149.0 GB, and the available is 93.0GB.
    Thank you for any assistance.

When you purchased the Seagate, did you format it Mac OS Extended?
    -Go into Disk Utility
    -Select the disk
-Make sure all your files are off the drive before you do this:
-Change Format to Mac OS Extended.

  • Slideshows burned to DVD have poor resolution

I just started using iMovie for doing slideshows and the resolution is really bad when burning to DVD. What am I doing wrong? My photos are fairly big but even when I strink them they come out bad. Same happens with iDVD.
    [ Edited by Host ]

There are MANY factors that can influence the quality of a slideshow that is put on a DVD.
The usual issue is people not understanding that a DVD image is lesss than 640x480 Pixels in NTSC - that's less than 0.3 megapixels. Blowing such a small image up to full screen on a computer monitor will never match the original quality of a 'multi'-megapixel digital camera image.
Having said that, there ARE ways of optimizing the quality of slideshows you create on DVDs. I recently created several large slideshows using FotoMagico - by using the custom output option, I was able to create DV movies that in my opinion were sharper that those I could produce in iMovie and which produced better DVDs. Other people prefer to use Photo to Movie. I believe both operate in a trial mode so you can see it you like the results.
Another way to optimize quality is to use something like Photoshop to resize your images to the sizes recommended in Preparing images for DVD slideshows at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/6.0/en/17.html because Photoshop seems to do a better job of reducing the image sizes than does Quicktime as used by iMovie/iDVD.
BTW, in iDVD , despite the names Apple has give the two compression modes, 'Best Performance' will usually give you a better looking slideshow DVD than will 'Best Quality'. ONLY use 'Best Quality' if your content runs over 60 minutes on a single-layer disc.

  • Color Burn inverts color!! Not working!!

Hello! I have recently started to work with different VFX for example man getting shot and blood comes out.
I have action essentials and when i add the blood and put color burn on the black background is still there and a different color appears on the blood itself in the middle!
This is really frustrating and it keeps me from finishing my project. Thanks

Why would you use Color Burn on a black background? This isn't even a specific issue with Action Essentials, you simply lack a basic understanding of how blending modes work and when to use which. Sorry, but you really need to start at the beginning:

  • Once I burn to DVD the footage is zoomed-in, edges cut-off

Once burned to DVD my video is zoomed in (the edges are getting cut-off. And the clips I put in reverse are blurry.

No, I'm not using the same monitor to edit as I am to watch the DVD.
I shot 24P. I burned using iDVD just to test to see how it looked on the TV monitor. I played it on numerous DVD players and the sides of the frame are getting clipped.
To reverse the clip, I'm opening the Speed option and simply clicking reverse. Is there a better way? It plays fine in the timeline but appears murcky and blurry when burned to DVD.
I'm exported by using File/Export/Quictime movie. Is that the best way to retain the best quality, or is there a better way?

  • Validation Error when burning a DVD

When I export a slide show from iPhoto to iDVD and press the icon to BURN, a warning comes up that there were problems during validation process (whatever that is?) and suggests not burning the DVD until the problems have been corrected. I can continue and it will burn the slideshow to the DVD okay even with this warning but later, say on another day, if I try to bring up the slide show in iDVD to try and burn it again, a message comes up that says there were problems during the validation process and won't let me burn another DVD. How do I go about fixing this problem?
iMac (PowerPC)   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Welcome to the discussions
The error you are getting can be caused by a different Formats of the slideshow you are trying to copy. Example if you are trying to copy Tiff, Jpeg, and Pic files through iDVD this may be your problem.
iDVD was developed for the user to make copies of there home movies and the like.
You will find that 3rd prty software like Roxio;s Toast-8 will make your problems go away.
or you can use the finder and follow the directions in this link.
