[Missing] Apple FireWire NTSC (720 x 480)

Everything is properly hooked up, so I shouldn't be receiving this problem correct?
I tried hooking up a monitor, as soon as I did that it said the FireWire connection was missing, even though it's hooked up along side the S-Video wire to my tv from the cam.

Did you recently install any updates? Which ones? If you've got Software Update set to automatically look for updates, then you'll need to look in /Library/Receipts and see what's been installed recently and when.
Report back about that, please.
Also, sometimes this problem can be resolved by powering down the computer and the deck or camcorder, then starting up again.
But your G5 is recognizing the device, it just doesn't have it on file, so it just says it's a unknown device. That's good, meaning the problem isn't with the camcorder or VCR, or with the FW cable.
BTW, which camcorder or VCR is this?

    Welcome to the forum.
This means FCP did not find your camera/DV deck when it started. The causes for this can be many. The usual suspects are:
    1. You did not have the camera turned on before you started FCP. Try VIEW>REFRESH A/V DEVICES. On some systems, the camera needs to be turned on BEFORE the computer as this operation does not seem to repoll the firewire bus.
    2. Your FCP preferences have become corrupt. Download and run FCP Rescue.
    3. Your Quicktime installation has become compromised due to system, quicktime or FCP upgrades. This is often solved by a reinstall of Quicktime after deleting any Quicktime receipts in the user/receipts folder
    4. Your fireports are incapacited. Shut down and unplug all connections. Wait a few minutes and reconnect and reboot.
    5. Your firewire cable is damaged. Replace the cable.
    6. Firewire ports on either your camera or computer are fried. Time to send the device in for repair.
    good luck.

  • Missing Apple Firewire NTSC

    Hi all,
I've read tons on this but can't find a solution...please help.
I needed to output a spot to miniDV for a station (haven't needed to do this in quite a while) but when I start up to output there's the "(missing) Apple FireWire NTSC (720 x 480)" message.
I recently (past 6 or so months) upgraded to Final Cut Studio 3 (not sure if this is significant).
I'm certain all of my capture and sequence settings are correct (used EasySetup and checked settings).
    I also:
    trashed prefs
    zapped the PRAM
removed QT versions and installed the most recent version
copied all additional easy setups to the library
    checked cables and ports
    reset decks to factory settings
checked system profiler is seeing decks
removed other peripherals on FW chain
My FCP is not seeing either of my decks – it won't load up the Apple FireWire NTSC for video or audio out.
It's not the decks – ultimately I had to transfer the project over to my laptop for output to the deck.
I don't know what to do.
    I have:
    Dual-Core 2x2.66 Xeon PowerMac G5 with 9 GB RAM
FCP 7.0.3, QT7.6.9, AJA Kona 3, JVC BR-HD50 Deck, Sony GV-HD700 Clamshell Deck
    Thanks for any advice.

    Woops! Thanks for replying.
Sorry for the disinformation – it's a MacPro 2nd Gen Dual 2.66 Intel Xeon with 9G RAM, AJA Kona3, and a 3ware Sidecar eSATA RAID.
The system recognizes both of my decks (JVC BR-HD50, and Sony GV-HD700). I'm just using the DV-NTSC easy setup to keep things simple and I check to make sure all of the AV tabs reflect these settings accurately.
This is the way I've always done it for going out to these decks for years now and I've never had any problems. I have a standard DV-NTSC sequence with bars and tone, slate, countdown, etc. for sending to stations. I haven't had to do this in quite a few months as stations are increasingly accepting digital files via ftp.
As I mentioned, I've done everything I've seen suggested online, and also tried the powered FW400 hub with no luck.
Thanks for any insight you might be able to give me on this issue.

  • [Missing] Firewire NTSC (720 x 480) option

This happened in 2 edit suites. I fixed it in edit 1 by resetting PRAM and trashing prefs. Edit 2 won't see it.
I can capture via Firewire from this deck (Sony M35U), so I obviously have a connection. System Profiler shows the deck and all its info, so it's obviously recognized by the computer. If I capture via the AJA, I can still set deck control over Firewire, so it's obviously THERE.
Yet, when I go to View/Video Output, it's not even an option. I don't even get the [Missing] Firewire NTSC 720 x 480 option. It's just not there. I have all the AJA options, but not the FIrewire ones. Anyone seen this disappear like that?
    Tried:
    Resetting PRAM several times
    Trashing prefs (all of 'em)
    Disconnecting all cables and reconnecting
Checked all of the settings on the deck several times
    Changed Firewire cable twice
WOndering if this is an AJA conflict, but it works now in the other edit suite, which is a clone of this one. Weird and frustrating.
Haven't tried setting up a new user yet, gonna try that now. If you have a clue, please clue me in…

All the settings were exactly the same. I changed nothing. It was a weird experience, but on a whim I decided to simply swap the decks in the rooms, wondering if there was some corrupt communication from the decks via the Firewire. Seems that was the case, because once I switched rooms, everything worked. Glad it worked out, because I was about to send the decks in for repair, having tested the ports, the Firewire cables, and FCP, and all came out working fine. Can't explain it, but it works.
    Thanks.

  • FCP5 - [Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720x480)

I just upgraded to Mac OSX 10.4.6 and Finalcut Studio.
I went to open FCP5 and look at all the new glory they offered me and found disaster. It gave me the "can't connect to device" message box on boot up. So I did my usual look at the deck and saw that it was on. But I'm still not able to connect.
    Thus far, I've tried:
    -restart my computer
    -powercycle the deck (DSR-1800)
-Checked the firewire bus through the OS and it shows that a Sony device is connected
    -remove all other firewire devices
    -tried different firewire port
-I dumped the preference files for FCP4.5, but can't seem to find documentation on how to dump FCP5 files
I've seen a post from someone about dumping all traces of Quciktime and reinstalling it. I'm a bit leary about that for some reason.
I also have Media100 installed on my machine. With FCP4.5 I never had an issue, or noticed any integration of any sort. However, if I go to View->Video Playback I am currently getting the follwoing:
    None
[Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720x480) (greyed out)
Digitial Cinimea Desktop Preview - Main
    Media 100 NTSC 640 x 480 (640 x 480)
    Media 100 NTSC 720 x 486 (720 x 486)
    Media 100 PAL 768 x 576 (768 x 576)
    Media 100 PAL 720 x 576 (720 x 576)
    HELP!!
    Thanks in advance

I'm having a similar issue, but a bit more extreme.
I have a PBook G4, and while I"ve tried all the following -
    -restart my computer
    -powercycle the camera
-Checked the firewire bus through the OS and it shows
    that my device is connected
    -remove all other firewire devices
    -tried different firewire port
-I dumped the preference files for FCP5
-tried the cables and camera on a G5 with success
And I cannot get my laptop to recognize the camera. I have the same issue as this post -
And, if I try and open Log and Capture, it closes FCP immediately.
to quote the other post, -
    if I go to
View->Video Playback I am currently getting the
    follwoing:
    None
[Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720x480) (greyed out)

    any ideas?

  • [Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720x440)

I just upgraded my system software and Final Cut Pro from 4.5 to 5.1. I'm having a problem with the video output through firewire. FCP play video though my deck (Sony DSR 40) however, when I go to the log/capture tool, I can control the deck (but preview is disabled). Under the the Audio/Video Settings, the drop down menu for video playback says "[Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720x480)."
I've tried putting the deck on different busses, disabling other firewire devices, isolating the deck, rebooting the computer, reinstalling FCP software, and dumping the preferences (and probably a couple other things). I have checked all the refresh devices, etc. as well. All to no avail. Help!!! Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    welcome to the forum!
You'll get good advice here and it's worth a visit even if you don't have a problem - you'll learn a lot from reading the posts.
This is a good workaround for curing your camera recognition problem:
First, check that your Easy Setup / Timeline / Camera or Deck Settings are all exactly the same, then making sure your camera or deck is in VTR mode, try to capture again.
FCP uses a different form of QT than iMovie for capturing, so if the camera works in iMovie (or if it's listed in System Profiler) but not FCP, it obviously means your Mac can see the VTR but FCP can't, so you need to do this QuickTime fix.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852
Follow the instructions carefully and you should have things running in no time but note that if you have QT Pro, you’ll have to re-purchase it.
If the Camera / Deck isn't recognised by iMovie or System Profiler, try resetting the Firewire Bus . . . Turn off the Mac and disconnect the power and all Firewire cables. Leave it for 30 mins then connect back up.
Still not working? Try a different Firewire cable.
Failing all this, try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit). The method varies from machine to machine, so visit the Apple site and search for it in support.
Don't use iMovie for capturing - it doesn't give you a timecode and that's very important.
Let us know how you get on!

  • (missing) Apple Firewire NTSC 720X480

I can't print to video (to a DV tape) because I get this message a few times, then firewire is unavailable as a print to video option. I've reinstalled, upgraded quicktime, etc.etc.
    Can anyone help?
    -Bill Kelly

Sounds like your machine doesn't see the camera or deck you're trying to record to.
It must be turned on and connected when you launch the app, or you can refresh the devices in the bottom of the view menu to get it to see your FW recording device.
Different cameras and decks use different firewire control as well, so you need to post what that camera/deck is and I'll bet we can get you going as long as you don't have some sort of hardware problem.

  • [Missing] Apple FireWire

I can't get Final Cut Pro 4.5 to output to my DV deck, although it has in the past.
When mastering to tape I have device control of my Sony DSR-20 deck (I can lay black w/ timecode) but I can't output the program's video & audio. In my Audio/Video Settings, Video Playback indicates "[Missing] Apple FireWire NTSC (720 x 480)", although device control and blacking happens via firewire.
I also tried digitizing DV footage but can't bring in video or audio either. Capture Settings are Device Control: FireWire NTSC, and Capture/Input: DV NTSC 48 kHz.
FYI – I have Final Cut Pro 4.5 running on a G5 with Panther 10.3.9 and Quicktime 6.5.2. I’m aware of the issues some folks have had with Tiger and QT7 so I’ve been hesitant to go there yet. Also, I have external drives firewired into the G5’s back port, while the DV deck is firewired into the front port.
    Thanks for any help --
    Dan

I exported the program to my HD, unplugged the external drives, and tried again to see if FCP would recognize the deck without the drives. No luck.
I wonder why I'd need to add a new card? This has always worked fine before. It's just now that FCP can't locate my deck and input or output video/audio. At the moment I'm more concerned with outputting since I need to master to tape for a project I'm sending out.
I checked my external drives in System Profiler and they're all 400 Mb/sec speed -- I don't have an 800 speed drive connected, which I would guess might impact firewire's ability to detect devices.
I'm up for trying a new card. Is there one in particular that you would suggest? I'm considering this one:

  • [missing] Apple FireWire DV NTSC

this is strange. I opened final cut to start capturing today and I couldn't capture anything from my camera. I've been able to do it before so I know it isn't the camera. Any ideas? When I go into my A/V settings it shows that the video playback is set to "[missing] Apple FireWire NTSC." Everything else is set up for Apple FireWire, the only one that says missing is video playback. I tried deleting my preference files and that didn't solve the problem, I've tried restarting and that didn't solve it. Any ideas?

First... can you open iMovie and check to see that it sees it there?
    If not...
Shut down the computer unplug everything have a beer and then fire it back up after 20 minutes. (Often called the Guinness Solution)
    Work?
    No -- do this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852

  • FCP X transcoding Sony HDR-FX7 (1080i) to NTSC 720 x 480. Results are not pretty.

Help, please? I shot some interview footage for my student documentary film with a Sony HDR-FX7 (1080i). FCP X transcodes it to NTSC 720 x 480 on import and it looks awful. Have now learned the difference between interlaced and progressive!. The film project has 1080p footage as well and won't deinterlace in Compressor or JES. Not sure what to do: can't reshoot. I've spent hours on Google and YouTube and can't find a solution or a viable workaround. Would welcome your help; thanks!

I don't know what you're doing but there is no way FCP imports that media to 720x480, unless the camera is set to downconvert on output. iLink has to be switched off.

A TV uses rectangular pixels: 720x480.
A computer uses square pixels. So, those same pixels (720x480) are actually 640x480 and a computer. So this is normal.
The quality of your DVDs would be a separate and subjective issue. However, I can suggest that you NOT use H.264 (very compressed format) as the format for iDVD (which does it's own compression) to work with. I would give iDVD a DV or AIC file.

  • [Missing] Apple FireWire Pal

"FCP can't find the missing Apple firewire Pal driver, reinstall Quicktime 7"
Is this true?or is there any other solution?

Yes... unfortunatly that is probably the problem. A few weeks ago (or months! i can't remember... time flies when you're having fun!) there was a surge of panic as everyone experienced connection issues after upgrading QT.
You also have to trash quicktime receipts. If you do a search on this forum about the topic i'm sure you will find everything you need to know in detail.

  • NTSC 720 X 480 4:3???  This format isn't' actually 4:3...

I've come across some confusion in terms of exporting the proper 4:3 format for viewing on TV. Why does it label the format 'NTSC' when really it is not 4:3 and in fact stretches your video to fit that ratio?
It ends up bringing the video down to 640 X 480 but not without distorting it first.
    Any answers? Ideas?

If you are creating video for standard definition broadcast (or DVD distribution) you must maintain a 720 x 480 rectangular pixel image. That specification hasn't and will never change (for reverse compatibility purposes).
If you are creating for high definition you need to research which format is required, there are high def specs that use rectangular pixels for distribution and convert to square for display.

Thanks for the reply TCY. I can't confirm whether your instructions are correct or not. I decided to outsource this project and ended up finding a guy who has agreed to create the slides for me for just $150. Can't beat that. (I'm a producer not a post production guy.) Hopefully someone will be able to make use of your advice at a later time.
