Missing apple menu

Can anyone help with this ? I'm at my wit's end. Key info is here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1710992&tstart=0
Have tried everything in the thread to no avail. Just bought Leopard 10.5 in the apparent false hope that a new OS would work its magic, but that didnt work either.
Thanks

Two things... Did you do an erase and install when you put Leopard on your system? And did you try using an external drive?
Either of these would pretty much tell if it is actually the HD that is the problem here going by the things you've already tried.

  • Missing Apple menu in Mavericks

My Apple menu in the upper left of the menu bar keeps disappearing.  I searched and found this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5504706 which gives the solution of deleting the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file.  This works after restart, but then once I shutdown my MBP and then power it up later the Apple is missing again.  Is this a common issue that will likely be addressed in an update in the future, or do I have a bad install of Mavericks?  I have posted about a sliced and diced Apple graphic I get briefly during start up and have been having nothing but headaches with my Silverlight plug-in in the past week.  It has been about a month since I upgraded to Mavericks and the Silverlight thing has just started within the last week so I'm inclined to think that isn't a Mavericks problem but either a Microsoft one or a Chrome one.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • "Simlified" Apple menu

    Hello out there,
since yesterday I have a kind of "Simplified" Apple menu, containing just the items "About this Mac", "Force Quit", "Sleeping Mode", "Logout <USER>" (Sorry, these are MY translations from German :-))
I don't know how that happend. But after a restart I was confronted with a "Simplified" Finder, without Icons on the desktop (which I deactivated via using the "Xupport"-Application) - But I don't know why and how the "Simlified" Finder. Now it is working fine again.
But can somone tell me how I will get back my "Shutdown", "Restart" and "System Preferences" among the other missing Apple menu items?
    Greetings from Germany

Although I don't have this application I think you selected the option 'Simple Finder'. I think that this reduces the items in the Finder Menus to the absolute basic - as well as hiding the desktop icons. You should be able to get back the Apple menu items by deselecting this option. Of course you will also get back your desktop icons. If I'm correct it is up to you to choose which options in this program suit you best.
My German is almost non-existent even though I have very good friends in Cuxhaven.

  • Apple Menu items are missing. How do I restore them?

My Apple Menu is missing some items. Not sure of all that may be missing, but the ones that I use that are missing include "System Preferences," "Restart," and "Shutdown."
System Preferences is still installed and available from the Applications folder, and I can restart or shutdown the system in other ways, but I'd sure like to get those items back on the menu.
I'm not what caused this, but I did some system maintenance including an iDefrag full defragmentation and some tweaking in Onyx. Can't say I know at which stage this happened, but the system seems to be behaving normally but for the missing items.
System is a Macbook Pro 17-inch, Mid 1009, running OS X Mavericks 10.9.2.
Thanks for any advice you can offer.

As it turned out, restarting the system didn't help, but shutting down and starting again did. Not sure if there's a difference between a restart and a shutdown+start, but I know there is a slight difference between a warm boot and a cold boot on PC, so maybe there is.
Anyway, the problem solved without major surgery. This specific option of removing the System Preferences menu item isn't available in Onyx, though removing the Restart and Shutdown options are (which I did not select). So, I guess I'll chock this up to an anomaly.
    Thanks for the help guys.

  • My apple menu bar is missing-how do I get it back??

My husband has a MacBook Pro (I'd provide iOS info here, but since the apple menu is not there I can't access the "About" option!), and the apple menu bar at the top of the screen disappeared while he was using the computer.  He was trying to access iTunes (which he said was acting a little "weird") and shortly thereafter the menu disappeared.  We've checked System Preferences and can't figure out how to get the menu back.  The launch pad at the bottom of the screen was not affected.  Any help would be appreciated…thanks!

Did you try rebooting the machine?

  • Missing Dropdown menu on Apple

When I click on the "Apple" in the top left of the screen, I no longer get a drop down... I can't shut down (gracefully i.e.)? Any idea of how to restore this?
I have had a rash of problems lately. My system "died" took it to the Apple shop and they did a back up and resore which was cool. But soon after that one of my accounts just dissapeared from the login screen. I researched that and was able to restore it. Now this.
    thanks,
    Bill

    Bill,
Well, here's another angle to try:
Open System Preferences>accounts and create a new user account with no limitations.
Click on your account, and click the check box to automatically log in as the new user (perhaps you could leave this box unchecked, and just log in as the new user when the mac starts up).
    Close System Preferences.
Now shutdown your mac (anyway you can).
    Restart...
    1. Are you able to start up as the new user?
    2. Does the new user have all the apple menu items you're used to seeing?
If so, I'd just move all you stuff over to the new user account (probably via the "shared" folder). Jot down all your network preference info, and just type it into the "new" applications.
Once you're sure you've got everything from the old account into the new one, I'd delete the old account....
    Status?

  • After I installed 10.7 My Apple Menu has shrunk in option including now missing the shutdown and restart also I can't not install the iCloud upgrade

After I installed 10.7 (nw 10.7.1) my apple menu has shrunk, my Finder menu keeps asking me if I want to "Run Full Finder" and my Mac will not power down or reboot. Is there any way to fix the installation.

Thank you guys for the recovery info (cmd-r)
However this is not working. the screen opens on the apple, and that's it.
This would probably work great for a new Mac though, but mine is a MacBook Pro (17" 2010) and I just read: "Some computers that did not ship with OS X Lion installed may have a software update available that allows them to use Lion Internet Recovery." Had I known about the firm update I would have installed it long ago, only now is a tad too late.
Any idea as to what to do next?

  • Missing Dock & Apple Menu Not Responding

About a month ago, I turned on my desktop imac to find no dock and no item on the apple menu work except for the sleep function. I am not the most computer savvy person so any help in dummy terms would be great. I have spent the last month reading post after post with similar problems and tried all solutions with no success. I have tried repairing permissions and disk repair from the tiger cd. I have reset the pram or something like that. I have also tried creating a test user id account and could not even log in under the new account. I am in deep deep need of help. Anyones advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • I need to reinsert lost item in Apple Menu

I lost (I don't know how) "System Preferences" item in the list below Apple Menu. I would to reinsert the missing item (System Preferences) in Apple Menu.
    How must I do?

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    ls -R /L*/Man*
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.

  • [Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720x440)

I just upgraded my system software and Final Cut Pro from 4.5 to 5.1. I'm having a problem with the video output through firewire. FCP play video though my deck (Sony DSR 40) however, when I go to the log/capture tool, I can control the deck (but preview is disabled). Under the the Audio/Video Settings, the drop down menu for video playback says "[Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720x480)."
I've tried putting the deck on different busses, disabling other firewire devices, isolating the deck, rebooting the computer, reinstalling FCP software, and dumping the preferences (and probably a couple other things). I have checked all the refresh devices, etc. as well. All to no avail. Help!!! Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    welcome to the forum!
You'll get good advice here and it's worth a visit even if you don't have a problem - you'll learn a lot from reading the posts.
This is a good workaround for curing your camera recognition problem:
First, check that your Easy Setup / Timeline / Camera or Deck Settings are all exactly the same, then making sure your camera or deck is in VTR mode, try to capture again.
FCP uses a different form of QT than iMovie for capturing, so if the camera works in iMovie (or if it's listed in System Profiler) but not FCP, it obviously means your Mac can see the VTR but FCP can't, so you need to do this QuickTime fix.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852
Follow the instructions carefully and you should have things running in no time but note that if you have QT Pro, you’ll have to re-purchase it.
If the Camera / Deck isn't recognised by iMovie or System Profiler, try resetting the Firewire Bus . . . Turn off the Mac and disconnect the power and all Firewire cables. Leave it for 30 mins then connect back up.
Still not working? Try a different Firewire cable.
Failing all this, try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit). The method varies from machine to machine, so visit the Apple site and search for it in support.
Don't use iMovie for capturing - it doesn't give you a timecode and that's very important.
Let us know how you get on!

  • Truncated Apple Menu

My computer was off for a week while I was away. Now the drop down menu for the Apple icon is truncated, only showing About This Mac, Force Quit, Sleep and Log Out of "This User". Update, System Preferences, Shut Down, etc. are no longer showing.
I have looked through System Preferences and About This Mac/More Info to see what I might have accidentally tweaked. I do not see what I might have done or any place to fix this.
I really miss the full drop-down Apple menu.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi:
That preference file is in your home folder (~). Go to ~library>preferences. Trashing a preference file is not a cure-all, but preference files may become corrupted (rare, but it happens) and that can cause all sorts of bizarre events. OS X rebuilds them with default values as needed.
I do not run Windows on my Apple (no commercial message) so I do not know whether the things you mentioned would cause a problem.

  • HT204587 touch id & passcode missing from menu

touch id & passcode missing from menu on new iphone 5s

I am still trying to understand my issue. I believe more and more than it is some kind of limits on password characters or complexity:
    - http://images.apple.com/ipad/business/docs/iOS_Security_Feb14.pdf, in February 2014, Apple indicates than you can use long passwords but only limited to alphanumeric characters: "iOS supports four-digit and arbitrary-length alphanumeric passcodes". Nevertheless, they also speak about complex characters without detailing what it means.
    - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jason-gilbert/use-accented-letters-iphone-passcode -secure_b_2765927.html, this report from Jason Gilbert (Feb 2013) recommends to use complex/special characters but indicated that "Apple added the ability to turn your passcode into a combination of numbers and letters, from 5 to 12 characters in length".
-https://developer.apple.com/.../leRef/Introduction/Introduction.html gives more detail listing some of the "authorised" complex characters: "A complex character is a character other than a number or a letter, such as &%$#".
I am still a little bit confused regarding which characters can be used. Apparently, lenght is not a problem for passcode and we can use some complex characters but considering I was using spaces " ", simple quote " ' ", " - ", puctuation " ! " and accentuated characters "é", I may have used an "unsuported" passcode.
