Missing Audio File

I worked on a project (Logic 8) a few months ago...everything was great...recorded some audio, did some editing, hid some tracks, exported an MP3, removed unused audio from the bin, everything was great and dandy.
I opened the same project last night and received the message that 1 audio file cannot be found. It happens to be the audio file that was on the hidden track. Since I emptied my recycling bin months ago, I fear that this very important file is lost forever.
Anyone know how I can get this file back?

My backup runs every few days with a mirror image of the drive. So, the backup has the same problem.
Re-recording it is not an option. It was a one time shot.
Maybe this is a good time to consider a better backup situation.
I try to follow this rule :
Backup in three different hard drives, and at the end of the project, make DVDs.
As far as the backups are concerned, I do what is called an Incremental backup, which keeps EVERYTHING, including bad takes, non-utilised material, demos, etc. It is all there. 99% of the time, nothing needs to be recovered.
But then there is this 1% chance, the 1% your stuck in... where you need something back.
If you want to use a dedicated software for this, you can use Retrospect, which I use, and has the Incremental Backup option, which adds all New files and copies all updated files as new ones as well, in order to keep EVERYTHING.

  • Pro Tools Missing  audio file message syndrom exists on Logic

I come from Pro tools and i am a bit traumatised by this fkn Pro Tools missing audio file message for those who know what i mean..
Is it something possible and frequent in logic when we work on a daily basis ?

No, you simply copy the entire project folder to a flash drive and bring it home. If you have included the audio files in the project folder, which logic does by default, logic will find them just fine at home. If it asks where they are, you just hit "search" and if they're there, If you've copied the song file to your drive without including the audio files ("pilot error") then  the program can't find them. Often, I get protools sessions from clients with missing files. Sometimes the entire audio files folder is missing, but more often the missing files are out-takes that are no longer part of the arrangement, and were still in the audio file list of the song, but were not included in the folder when the project was copied and brought to me. How or why, I cannot tell you.

  • FCP into STP missing Audio files

I have been working w/out STP for a couple of years now and have been getting by okay. Now I am looking to take advantage of STP "streamlined workflow"
I can't even bring my project succesfully into STP from FCP, majority of sound won't send into STP.
I believe it is some type of setting in FCP and or STP.(audio effects originaly exported from stp into fcp will cross apps, audio taken from tape will not, sony xd sound will not)
    Any Ideas

    • When you opened the Song, did it tell you that files were missing (in which case, it would give you the opportunity to search for them)?
    • Did you Save the Song when you finished the recording session (because if not, it won't know you recorded anything new)?
    • Did you record onto a removable hard drive?
    • Did you delete Regions in the Arrange Window & choose the wrong option, thereby deleting the actual audio files themselves rather than just the Regions?
There are many, many ways to go from here, so answer these questions first & we'll take it from there. The more detail you can give, the easier it will be to find out what happened & what to do about it.

  • 2 Questions: Missing audio files...and How to delete audio files

I have two nagging issues associated with my podcast at iTunes.
First, audio files are missing from the podcast. Everytime I post m4a files to my podcast, they are added to an xml file, and to the podcast. The xml file is complete, but some files are not making the trip to the podcast.
Second, I have a need to delete some of the audio files which appear in my podcast. How do I do that?
    Thanks!

As has been suggested you can encourage people to download QuickTime player by doing something like this...
    http://www.mirroroftheuniverse.com/Songs.html
You can also present your songs like this...
    http://roddymckay.com/Satellite/JukeBox.html
This is a SnoCap jukebox and you need an account to use it but you'll get the link to ESnips on the above page.
A 3 minute song has a file size of about 30 Mb in AIFF format. Converting it to MP3 reduces it to about 3.5 Mb and M4A to about 5.5 Mb.
iTunes will do these conversions for you and M4A is far superior to MP3 as far as sound quality is concerned.

  • Logic Pro missing audio files and instrument patches

    Good morning
Last week I downloaded  Logic Pro version  9.1.8 from the App store.
I have downloaded all the additional copntent listed
I am running a brand new IMAC with OSX10.8.2
The instrument choices and patches show up.....
However  many of the audio files and instrument patches are missing.
Prerecorded songs can be loaded but...
When I open a logic song (recorded on my prior IMAC) and recorded within Logic Audio 9.0.0, I get consistent messages such as
    EXS24 Instrument "Classical piano.exs"  Audio file "BDorfer f O d#.aif not found.
This happens with most most of the patches.
    Many thanks for your help

The only things missing from the App Store version compared to the Boxed set are the loops and samples that came as part of Soundtrack Pro and those are no longer available..
However, the sample you mentioned is actually part of the GarageBand Library.... Did you install GB too?
If you did so... then... three things..
    First, try using FindAnyFile
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
(Download the version on that webpage and not the App Store version)
..and do a search for BDorfer.. (Just that and nothing else) and see if it finds your missing file.
If it doesn't find it.., install GB and try again... (You may need to rebuild Spotlight afterwards as described below)
If it does find it then..
Two.. rebuild GB's Loop index as this fixes all kinds of weird things in Logic... (and yes, i know its loops not samples but it's worth trying based on past experience fixing these kinds of issues)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2443?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
    and... if that doesn't work..
    Three... Have you reindexed Spotlight?
    http://osxdaily.com/2012/01/17/rebuild-spotlight-index/
Logic uses Spotlight to find everything it needs.. so that is worth a try too if everything else fails..

  • Missing audio file stuffs up Magic band

Opening Magic GB and I get "Hollowbody Rhythm caf. not found" .Skip this and the create window opens up to show all instruments are missing. Got any advice please?

I opened a new song '1.band' in GarageBand, recorded
a track, saved 1.band and then saved 1.band as
'2.band'. I then deleted the track I had recorded and
recorded a new track. Then I saved 2.band. When I
tried to re-open 1.band I received the error: "Audio
file 'Recording#01.aif' not found", I clicked
'Search' and GB returned the same error but only
listed 'continue' as an option. 1.band opened and had
a dummy file where I had recorded audio. I then
    looked in the media folder of the 1.band package;
there was no .aif at all. I looked in the media
folder of the 2.band package and there was only the
.aif that belonged with that song.
Is there anyway of recovering the .aif for 1.band?
I've tried using Spotlight to locate Recording#01.aif
to no avail. This file happens to be an irreplaceable
field recording so ANY help is greatly appreciated.
Did you also empty the trash? If not, it is probably still sitting in the trash. I usually leave stuff in the trash a few days or more before I empty it, just to be sure I didn't delete something I shouldn't have.
HT's advice is certainly correct for future recordings, as always.

  • MPEG1 Muxed - MISSING AUDIO FILES

I have a few QT clips that are MPEG1 Muxed. When I import into FCP all I get is the video file and not the audio file. Is there a way obtaining the audio files from a Muxed clip?

Rather than demuxing with MPEG Streamclip , this demuxing advice which is tirelessly offered to many who then have no idea what to do with separate video and audio stream files, use MPEG Streamclip to export the MPEG-1 to DV and let it do the work for you in one pass. It can export to all QT formats and DV and you get the video and audio in a ready to use file. Better no?
Keep in mind MPEG-1 which is typically 352X240 at <30 fps will suffer a lot quality-wise when upsampled to 720X480 at 30 fps. There is not much data there to work with.

  • URGENT! Missing audio files from a live recording due to Logic crash

    Hi,
yesterday, in the middle of a (low budget) live recording, Logic gave me an error message saying "disk too slow" and stopped recording.
I was using the internal drive. I know this is not a proper habit, but I would have never thought that Logic could complain about the drive slowness with 2 tracks/24bit/44,1khz. Instinctively I pressed * at once but this caused the sequencer to start recording back from bar 1, making the previous 27 minutes of recording disappear, even from the audio files directory.
Is there anything I can do to recover the two AIFF files and avoid lots of swearwords from the customer?

    Thanks for the sympathy musicspirit...
About Logic crashing... Actually, Logic didn't "crash", that is, the application didn't quit. It only stopped recording, displaying that "disk too slow". If truth be told, the timeline remained red, it stopped recording the two tracks. Then I pushed the "record" key and it started recording back from bar 1. As soon as I realised that it wasn't displaying the previous 27 minutes of recording anymore, I stopped the transport and something even more strange happened... Logic rendered the overview of the newly recorded two audio regions and started prompting error messages about one of them being an 8-bit audio file. Moreover, I had the Roger Nichols Inspector plugin open and in the meantime it went crazy too, displaying "9999" in the clips/consecutive clips/etc. counter.
I was listening with my headphones plugged into my Fireface and I can tell you that the audio coming from the soundcard was perfect during the Logic "crash". It never stopped, clipped, popped or anything similar.
About the audio path, audio file name... I always double check the audio recording path before starting a recording and it was exactly where it should be.
After the crash I recorded the second part of the gig on an external FW hard drive and everything went smooth. I simply can't find the audio files of the first 27 minutes anywhere on the drive. However I found out pieces of them with Data Rescue II among deleted files, but they are corrupted (interrupted by pink noise and square waves - BTW I plan to save one of them labelling it with "how an audio file dies").
It is really strange that such a powerful program (as Logic is) doesn't save an audio file if for some reasons it stops recording and you press record again...

  • I'm suddenly missing audio files. Can they be recovered?

A number of tracks in my iTunes Library seem to be missing. These tracks appear with an ! symbol to the left of the track name. I'm a Mac guy but this is a problem on my wife's Windows machine. I think I had this problem in the past on my Mac  with both iTunes and iPhoto files (latest vesions of software and OS). I think there is a way to rebuild libraies on the Mac but how do you do it on a Windows machine?
    Hope you can help.
    John

The "!" symbol means that iTunes does not find the song file in the location it was expecting.  This usually occurs when the file, or one of its containing folders, has been moved, deleted, or renamed.
If you or your wife remember changing something, then change it back.  If not, then find the files with the help of Windows Search, and don't forget to look in the Recycle bin too.

  • Missing audio files in Premiere after re-opening

I just finished editing some clips for a gaming video I was working on. After saving it last night with all the audio clips still in the timeline, I re-open the project this morning seeing that all of my audio from the recorded footage was gone. But the song in the background still working perfectly and staying in the timeline. (This is the first time this has happened to me)
I did not touch the project overnight, and I perfectly remember the audio working perfectly last night.
This may just be a small bug, but is there a way to re-sync everything without having to manually sync everything myself?
    I work on a Windows 8.1 computer
Using Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014
If anyone knows a way to fix this, or if anyone has had the same problem. Please let me know. Thanks!

becaue of the issues when using MA or a TM backup to restore from one computer to another, with Logic, this is often a common problem.
To fix it just go to this link.. and re-download and install all the essential and additional content... and then all should be fine. I know it can be a pain to do but ijn reality, this has been found to be the only effective way of fixing such an issue.
Please note: Make sure both GB and Logic are not running (In otherwords, make sure you have quit both of them) when you install the content...

  • EXS 24 audio files missing from G4 to mac Pro. Export solves, but why?

Hi. I recently upgraded from G4 DP to Mac Pro (huge jump). While some of my sample libraries work straight away...others do not, claiming "file not found" when I know they're there.
A cure that works is to go back to the G4, load the files into EXS24 there, export them to my external drive and then run the mac pro off this. The "export" seems to be the critical step and seems to re-create the apparently missing audio files.
It's very slow as can only do one at a time. Is there something obvious I'm missing here?
    All thoughts welcome
    Jonathan

I have this too and I haven't been able to find any info on the net about this.
I have no audio transitions or effects at all.  Would love to find out how to fix this.

  • Audio Files Missing after sent from FCP

I'm sending a sequence to STP from FCP. There are 8 tracks of audio (4 stereo pairs). Tracks 1 & 2 have dialogue, 3,4,5 &6 have SFX and 7 & 8 have music. After sending a Multi-track project I am missing audio files on the dialogue track. The visual reference is there. The audio and video are linked in FCP but sections of dialogue are just not there.
I've repaired disc permissions, trashed preferences, ran Disk Warrior and reinstalled FCS. I'm on STP 3.0.1.
I searched the forum and was unable to find a similar situation. Any and all insight are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

You have to assign tracks to a submix and then out to the master before you can hear them.
But some of the audio files are there and some of them aren't. There is no rhyme or reason for audio that appears and files that are missing. I can hear the dialogue that made it to STP from FCP, along with the SFX and the music. I've never assigned a submix to audio just to be able to hear it.
    Are you on a laptop?
I've tried it on my 8 Core Mac Pro and my 2007 MBP. Same result on both. I have other sequences where everything is sent over completely. It's just this one. It is no different from any other sequence. It is all ProRes 422 and .AIFF 48khz/16 Bit
    Thanks for your input.

  • Lost audio file embedded in project

OK, weird... I was playing around with adding sound to my slideshow. It was about a month ago, and I forgot what I did exactly. Sigh. Anyway, now music begins to play when I start playing the presentation. I can't find the sound file. Is there some way to a) find the sound file and b) delete it. Or at least disable it? I tried "saving as" with advanced options, but the "copy sound file with project" was greyed out. Sure would appreciate knowing how to get outta this. Thanks!

It seems like you have your sound file set as a "soundtrack" for the entire presentation, rather than associated with a specific slide.
Click on the Document (far left) Icon in the Inspector, open the Audio submenu, and you probably will find your "missing" audio file in the Soundtrack window. Delete it from there and all should be well again.

  • Logic 8 can't find my audio files

I recently upgraded to Logic 8 from Logic 7. When I did this, I almost completely maxed out the memory on my MacBook Pro. To make enough room for the upgrade, I moved many of my old files to an external hard drive.
When I try to open old Logic files, both those on my MacBook Pro and those from the external hard drive, Logic gives me a message that it cannot find the "_____" audio file, and prompts me to skip it or search for it manually. I'm something of a Logic novice, so I'm hoping that someone can tell me where Logic typically "stores" the audio files. Doing a search by date (trying to find the files by comparing the date of the Logic project and assuming that the audio files would be the same) turned up nothing. However, I didn't delete anything that I didn't move to the external drive. Those audio files have to be somewhere.
Can anyone tell me the file saving protocol for the audio files? I'm sure that I can find them if I can figure out where to look.
Thanks a bunch for your help (you Logic Rock Stars!)

When you originally recorded the songs, had you saved them as a Project? Because if you had, an audio folder for the song would have been created within the songs main folder, and that's where the audio files that are missing will be.
Because you simply dragged the Logic files over to the external drive, and then tried to open the songs, the original audio pathway is still intact, and the Logic file is looking for the audio in it's original location, which, of course, it is not now.
When you get the first message "Cannot find lead vocal 1 (or whatever it is), choose "manually", and navigate to the audio file folder of that song. Once you locate that first missing audio file, Logic will look there for the rest of the missing files, and finish loading the song correctly on it's own.
So... let me ask you... are the Logic song files themselves found with a song folder of the same name? If they are, you should also see a folder within that song folder, labeled "audio files". If that's the case, the audio for that song is stored within that audio files folder.
If you hadn't gotten into the habit of saving songs as projects from back in Logic 7, then this could be a very long, and tedious process, of locating those files.

  • Missing aif files

    hi there,
after i record a simple track and save etc.  when i go back to garage band, load the track, it says Audio file “Natural#04.aif” not found".  and hten my track which i have recorded with that .aif file is no longer in existence...
    help please!

    Hi there,
I started experiencing problems with lost/missing audio files after upgrading from GarageBand '09 to GB '11. Before I've had a whole bunch of other problems, some where solved with help from Apple advisers, some not. When I bought my MacBook Pro in October 2009, I also bought Apple Care. I didn't want to, but the guy in the store told me that I might regret it if I don't. Good thing I followed his advise. It's expensive, true, but if I didn't have it,...well, I'm glad that I do. Apple Care allows me to call Apple Support and have trouble shooting sessions with Apple advisers. Some of the sessions depending on how difficult/serious problem was were up to two (2) hours long! And let me just tell you, that so far there have been problems with basically all applications at one time or another. I also had quite a few remote sessions with senior advisers. I like those the best, I can see their cursor on my screen leading me to places where I should go, and do whatever they tell me to do over the phone at the same time. Some GB problems were solved that way, some not. Regarding lost audio files I'm currently working with third senior adviser. The previous two who were working with me for the last few months basically run out of options and stopped getting back to me. All three said the same thing though, that's the first time they saw thing like that (audio files getting lost). The current adviser passed the whole issue to Apple engineers over a couple weeks ago. So far I've got an e-mail from him with an info that engineers keep working on it, and meanwhile I should use the only solution that I have in my disposal, the solution which might work for you guys or might not. First of all you need to have backups, you need to set up your time machines, so when something bad happens to your project, you can "pull it" back from time machine. Once there, it'll stay there. I made a mistake with postponing setting time machine, and it costed me loss of a few projects. Getting back to issues with my GB, I went to the store where I bought my computer and asked the guy there to transfer one of my projects to their GB on one of their computers. To our surprise, the audio files which were getting lost on my computer, didn't get lost on their GB, but instead completely different audio files went missing! Go Figure. OK, here is the issue with my GB. First of all, this problem only affects projects created in older version of GB. Here is what happens: I open the project created in GB '08 or in GB '09 in the GB '11 version. If you updated your application to iLife '11 all the projects open in GB '11. At first all the audio files are there. Now I want to close the project, so I go to "File", then click on "save" in scroll down menu. Now comes the tricky part. Even without making any changes whatsoever, after clicking on "save" a box with a message appears on the screen, more or less saying that since the project was created with older version of GB, I have to decide how do I want to save it. I can either click on blue active button "save" which will save the project in GB '11, or I can click on "save a copy", or click "cancel", go back to "File", and click on "Save As". In case of "save a copy" and "save as" you'll have to change the original title, you can add whatever, or remove whatever you want from the original title. The point is, the title has to be different. If you named your project Black Night, so now you can go for Black Night 2 or something like that. So, if I click on that active blue save button and save the project to GB '11, then close it (it doesn't matter if I save it or not to iLife), or quit GB altogether, and then reopen the project again, audio files go missing. Having backup helps a lot, because I can get the project from time machine as many times as needed. So when I reopen the project and audio file is missing, I trash it, I go to time machine, restore it from there, and this time I save it either as "save as" with different title, or "save a copy" also with a different title. In some cases "save a copy" doesn't help. The audio file still goes missing. So the best option for me in that case is to save the project as "save as". But if you don't have time machine, and you lost an audio file, and perhaps you don't even remember what it was,so you can't reproduce it, then there is to my knowledge still one option left. You can buy special software for recovering lost files. These softwares are expensive, so you're better off spending money for whatever is needed to set up your time machine. I hope that this what I wrote here might help a bit for those who have similar issues. I also understand the feeling of getting frustrated with GB, and even thought of abandoning it altogether perhaps for some other software. I myself many a times due to multitude of technical problems with GB and other applications exercised the thought of getting rid of my computer. But that would mean substantial financial loss, so I'll keep it till Apple Care runs out then I'll see. Fact is, that upgrade to iLife '11 helped to solve many issues from the past. Up and coming software updates addressed many of them. As far as GB goes, despite all the issues that I've been having with it, In my opinion it's a very good sounding software. I can't deny having lots of fun with it, and I keep discovering new possibilities all the time. Here is a link to sites where you guys can check out how I'm doing with GB and iLive (to make videos). At the moment I use Apogee duet interface, before I used..., well, I'll keep it a secret for now.
    Cheers!
