Missing blank disc icon

OK...what happened to my blank disc icon when I pop one in the drive? I want to drag and drop photos from iPhoto5 onto a disc for a non-mac user, and I can't find my disc...in fact, I can't even find it in the Finder? Anyone know what gives? Thanks,
Chris

Lori, thanks for the tips - now think I see what is happening.
It looks like, when I play with the General Preferences in Finder, I currently have CDs, DVDs checked to display on my Desktop - but I have an external drive which is split into two drives, so my system is reading these two drives as my CD/DVD drives. The result is, my CD drive does not display on the Desktop at all - or in the Finder Sidebar.
Given all of this, even the instructions link you sent me doesn't work. Any idea how I can rectify this? It is almost as if there's not enough room on the desktop or something.
Thanks.
Chris

  • Duplicate Blank Disc Icons

    Hey guys,
When I've finished burning a disc with the Finder or with iTunes. It leaves a duplicate disc on the desktop.
Say, I've burnt a disc called Data. There will be a disc on the desktop called Data, and one called Untitled CD.
    Anybody else having this problem?
    Thanks

That is an alias left for your convenience should you wish to make another copy...delete it if you like.
Uncheck the option in Finder prefs to have optical discs displayed on the desktop - double check Disk Utility for any lingering disc images there as well.

  • Blank disc not showing up on desktop unless opening in Finder - normal?

Yesterday, I was burning a batch of audio CDs when I realized that the blank discs weren't showing up on the desktop until they were burnt.
After looking around the internet to see if this is normal and for solutions and whatnot, the best answer I've found (and one that's worked) is that I have to select "Open in Finder" when I pop in the disc for it to show up on the desktop pre-burn.
Is this normal? I swear that blank discs used to show up on the desktop once I popped in the disc without having to select any option - even if I selected Ignore on that dialog that pops up.

Wow, guys. This is crazy. I checked in apple profiler like you all suggested. It said no media.
At that point, I ejected, then re-inserted the CD and suddenly, HALLELUJA! Up popped the question, and the icon. And system profiler now says that there is a CD.
So thank you all for the help.
Hopefully this is the last we'll see of this.

    Hi Marc,
I have the same issue today.
Since I had a problem of booting so that I reconstructed library by using option start. However I cannot back up the library images to DVD now.
Toast works so that this is not Pioneer superdrive issue.

I have an older 8GB black iPod Touch (no bluetooth) no longer supported by tech. It is "locked" in restore mode. When I do a 2 button reset I can get the Apple logo but then it pops back to the synch cord-and-music disc icon indicative of restore. Any advice?

For that error, check out the article below for additional troubleshooting to get it sorted out. If it continues then you may need to contact Apple support.

Remote Disc Can't recognize Blank disc, but it does recognize other discs. I am trying to burn something from my itunes on my mac mini to a blank disc on my windows computer. What could be wrong?
I can see other discs such as music and stuff so I know I have installed it correctly but how come I can't see the blank disc that I need to burn?

You can't burn discs remotely, you can only read data discs remotely (i.e. you cannot play movie DVDs either).
Either copy the files to the remote computer or get an external drive.

  • I used to be able to burn photos onto a CD-R disc. Now I insert a new, blank disc and am told there is insufficient spac available for my selected year of photos. Even when reducing the date to ONE photo, I still get the same message. Confused.

I used to be able to burn a selection of photos from my iPhoto library onto a CD-R disc. Today I inserted a new blank disc and was shown a message that there was insufficient space for my chosen year of photos. Even when I reduced the date to include only ONE photo!- the message was the same. I am at a loss as to why, and what to do. My iMac is about 7 years old and upgraded to Snow leopard. Any bright ideas?

When burning a CD-R, the OS first creates a 'shadow' disk image that replicates what the CD will look like, then it copies that data to the CD-R itself. Therefore you need enough free space on your internal drive to create this temporary image. If your internal hard drive is full you won't be able to create the shadow, and that could be what you're seeing.
If the OP's disk is too full to permit the creation of a 700MB disk image, it's a wonder that the computer is functioning.

  • Itunes no longer recognizes any blank discs I insert for burning.

While recently trying to burn a cd from my iTunes library, the program didn't recognize any blank discs I inserted. It kept saying 'please insert blank disc'. Every other program on my pc will recognize these blank discs which are brand new and of top quality. What gives ?

  • HELP! DVD Drive won't read blank discs

Recently, MAC Mini (Power PC) Matsushita UJ-845 Superdrive doesn't recognize blank DVD media (from same 100-pack spindle previously used with no problem). Drive spins, reads and then seems to go into a rhythmic oscillation. After a short time, I get this message:
    "The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
    Sense Code = 0x64
    ILLEGAL MODE FOR THIS TRACK"
If I keep trying to get the blank disc read, I get another message:
    "Interface Error: -16434
    The connection is not stable"
Has anyone else experienced this? I've done forum searches on some of the key words and error codes above with no luck.
I get this error when trying to burn a VIDEO_TS file to DVD using Toast 7, but it really seems to be more of a hardware-related issue.
    Anyone got any ideas?

    xfm,
I too have the exact same error messages, but with a UJ-846 drive and Verbatim DVD-R 100-pack spindles.
My drive reads CD/DVDs OK, no problem, but gives problems when I put in a blank disc. I had this problem a few weeks ago with CDs as well, but then opened up the Mac mini and 'cleaned' the Superdrive with some compressed air, and that seem to have sorted the problem then.
Today though, for some reason NOTHING works, I even left the Mac mini 'naked' (without casing) while trying ten times and blowing air in between each time.
I have two batches of Verbatim DVD-R (100packs) bought in two different stores about a month or so apart, and one batch of CD-Rs that are yet another make. All of them with the same problem.
I think this is a hardware problems and it absolutely stinks that it only happens after the Apple warranty has expired. I've done about a 100+ disks on the Mac mini, which in my mind is hardly any at all, so it can't be 'worn out'.
Any ideas, or anyone with leverage at Apple that can kick some a*s
PS. I also have a MacBook Pro C2D with a busted spindle in the SuperDrive (UJ-857D), so me no like SuperDrives very much.

  • Blank CD icon remains after burning disk

    Hi all,
When I burn a CD (with either the Finder or iTunes) the blank CD icon remains on the desktop even after the disk has been burned.
For instance, if I burn, say, a Beatles CD using iTunes, the original "Untitled CD.fpbf" icon remains on the desktop, and under it another "Beatles" CD icon appears. If I eject the newly-burned CD, the "Untitled CD.fpbf" CD icon remains. If I insert another blank disk, another "Untitled CD.fpbf" CD icon appears. These icons don't disappear until I manually drag them to the trash.
Is there something I can do to stop this?
    Thanks

  • OS X won't recognise blank discs

I've tried inserting a blank DVD and blank CD, and nothing comes up on my desktop, and if I Cmd click a file and choose "Burn", OS X tells me no disc is inserted.
However if I load up Toast Titanium, I can burn using the same blank discs just fine.
    Any idea what's going on?
    Cheers

  • Burning music from Itunes on to blank disc

I am attempting to burn a folder in Itunes to a blank disc but it will not allow me as the music in Itunes needs to be in MP3 format to burn. How do I resolve this issue? Thanks

If you are burning an Audio or Data disc, the songs can be in any format. However, if you are burning an MP3 CD, all the songs must already be in MP3 format.
If you need to convert songs to MP3, follow this guide: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1550

  • IDVD does not burn iMovie, blank disc

iMovie is fine. I export to iDVD and everything is fine, make titles, etc.
I burn and everything's ok, and the burn progresses fine, but the burn stops and spits out the disc seconds before it is complete.
I put the disc back in and I get the "you have inserted a blank disc....." message.
I'm using iLife '09, Maxell DVD-R discs (which have worked fine before) I scoured the internet and tried ALL suggestions I came across.
Any ideas or help is appreciated.....

Don't know why some fail so soon. But it does happen. Happened to me also a few years back. Did you happen to purchase an extended applecare warranty by any chance? If not apple normally covers these issues for the first 12 months (1 year). Nevertheless, Id give them a call anyway and feel free to keep us posted. I can tell you from experience that apple is normally very good about servicing their products (even those slightly out of warranty) so it is worth the call.
If you don't get the results you want, then just post back and we'll provided additional recommendations or possible workarounds.

  • Remote disc icon?

    Hi,
Just got one of the new Mac minis and it's a cracking wee machine. One small question, however. I re-installed OS X and under devices as well as under Computer I have a cd icon saying 'Remote Disc'. I understand that this is for installing OS X across a network or sharing a disc but why is the icon there? Shouldn't it be there only if I have cd or dvd sharing on?
This is on a clean install (10.5.6) nothing changed, wireless connection. I've got a unibody Macbook and a Power Mac all running Leopard and none of them seem to show the icon.
Apologies for the really dumb questions but gets me wondering why it's there by default.
    Cheers guys!

    dunes,
I have the same experience with my new Mac Mini.
None of my computers have DVD/CD sharing turned on.
Even if I turn on DVD/CD sharing on any my computers, none of the other computers show a Remote Disc in the sidebar.
This Remote Disc has never showed up on any of my computers until I got this new Mini.
There doesn't seem to be much info on DVD/CD sharing that I can find. It doesn't appear that anyone is using this feature except for owners of the MacBook Air.
At this point, I would just like to get rid of this Remote Disc icon and get back to normal.
I have found 3rd party documents on how to turn this feature on for non MacBook Air users, but nothing to turn it off.
