Missing boot sound

For some bizzare reason, when I reboot my macbook and it turns on I don't hear that apple "dong" boot sound when the gray screen comes up.
The only real information I can give is that I installed and unstalled windows a ton of time until I got it the way I like.
This problem is really creeping me out, can anyone help?

Ok thanks, the problem might have been that I've got a speaker system hooked up to my mac book and that the internal speakers were muted. I checked this when I unplugged the speakers just now on the Windows side.
Thanks for the help.

  • Mac Pro boot sound on Cinema display

    Hey guys,
Is it possible to run the Mac pro boot sound on my cinema display instead of the Mac pro's build in speakers?
My macbook sounds more agressive than that Mac badboy .
    thanks!
    -Sam

I think this has been a problem since the beige G3 and an early speaker-equipped Mac display.
The startup chime is produced long, long before the display is configured to accept the data and make it into speaker noises. It is near impossible to make the startup chime come out the display speakers.

  • Powermac G5 wont boot/no boot sound/no video just flashing led

Ok, I think I have a serious problem, the problem came up when I removed RAM, and befor that computer worked just fine (i have dual powermac G5 2GHz).
And after that to resolve that issue I tried everything:
    - reset PRAM;
    - reset SMU;
    - unpluging everything and holding down power button while connection power cord;
    - removing video card and powering up;
    - moving RAM around and powering;
And nothing helped. Every time I power up the computer there is no chimne, no video, just falshing led!
So if anyone knows of any else options PLEAS HELP, I came to dead end.
    Thanks

I've tried it with cabels unhooked and with new battery, and nothing, same problem no boot sound just flashing light.
After that I also measured the power connector (because earlier I bought a book from PeachPit - Desktop and Portable System, which all I can say is not worth the money, but there is little chapter talking about a power supply verification) and the voltage is correct (+5V), so the power supply is OK.
All I can say is that this was my first powermac and i bought it from second hand so there is no warranty, and in Slovenia there aren't any service technician, the nearest is in Austria. I'm very, very, ...... disappointed about the quality of powermac's (although I bought it from second hand it cost me a lot of money, which I don't have).
I will not buy a new logic board to check if it's solution for the problem, and I'm very enthusiastic about computers, i'll probably leave and eventually sell it for pennies (and lose 1000EUR's, bull **).
The end point is that anyone who is buying a powermac g5 with no warranty, earlier model don't do it!! I don't know about MacPro's.

  • Missing Boot Partition

I am trying to install Solaris on a machine which already has Windows98.I want to make my machine dual boot. After the Solaris installation is completed and i try to boot the machine , i get the errror message " Missing Boot Partition".
Please help me to solve the problem.
    Prashant

    Hi Prashant
There are chances that if you are installing Solaris behind windows system,
then the boot sector might be overwritten.
Here are some steps you need to do when you are installing Solaris behind windows
    1) Back up your Windows 98.
    2) Create a primary partition for Solaris with DOS fdisk or Partition
    Magic's fdisk utility.
    3) Edit the partition table with a disk editor and give the Solaris
Partition the ID 82 (But be careful if you install Linux after. Linux
Swap partition has the same ID)
    4) Save the Master Boot record in a file
    5) Install Solaris 8 from the Software CD 1 (not the Install CD)
    6) The Solaris partition will be recognized from the Setup. You don't
need 2 partitions, as if you would install from the installation CD
    7) After Solaris installation is completed, boot DOS from a floppy and
    rewrite your MBR.

  • Slow OS X boots (without boot sound)

    Hi,
I installed boot camp, put an image of a windows drive on the partition using disk utitility (and target disk mode). It didn't work, so I installed it normally (using a disk).
I think it is since then, that my OS X boots are slow and the boot sound has gone?!
    Can this be resolved?

Considering what you did, make a backup before you ever install or make changes, clone OS X, and reformat and restore.
You need to use Boot Camp Assitant to partition for Windows, and you need to use program suitable to each OS in order to clone (backup or restore).
CCC, SuperDuper and DU to do OS X clone/restore.
WinClone or Windows native software for XP/Vista.

  • Pause before boot sound, should I worry?

Just yesterday I started noticing that whenever I power up my MacBook Pro it's taking around 15-20 seconds between the time I press the power button and when I hear the Apple bootup sound. During this time the screen is blank and I hear none of the usual startup noises. This only happens when cold booting, not when waking up from sleep. Should I be worried?

Thanks. I guess what's bugging me is that this only seemed to show up in the last couple of days. Normally (meaning before now) the boot sound was almost instantaneous after I pressed the power button. But perhaps I'm just a little gunshy after reading all the problems other people have had with their MBPs. So far I've not had any (other than the fact that it's hot, but CoreDuoTemp tells me it's not to the point where I have to worry about damaging the processor).

  • Disabling Boot Sound

    Hi everyone,
Was wondering if anyone know how to disable the short apple boot sound at the start up with the white screen and the apple logo. I noticed that on Mac books even if a pair of headphones are connected during booting, the boot sound still plays through the speakers.
    -Paul

There are at least 3 apps made to stop the startup chime. I think none of them yet work with Intel Macs. Who knows when they'll be updated or if it's possible with Intel Macs:

  • IMac Boot Sound Volume

    Hi,
Why does my iMac boot chime change it's volume from time to time?. Some times it's really loud, and annoying. How do I tame it down a bit?
    Thanks
    Tristram

    Tristram,
Like many in these posts will tell you, the boot sound is a good thing because it is a diagnostic signl that announces everything is ok with the system.
But I agree it does get pretty loud. If you want, you can press the mute button on the keyboard before shutting down or restarting to mute the start up sound as well. There is no other way to actually control the volume except to mute it.
To actually control the volume level of the chime, there are some hacks like StartupSound.prefPane available that do the job.
    Hope this helps...

  • Mac pro no boot sound, black screen and loud fans

    Hi everyone,
I've had problems with my Mac for a while now. First of all, it indicated ram problems with 2 beeps. I later fixed this by moving and changing around modules. It was solved, but now a new problem. The Mac seems to turn on, making its iconic sound for startup, but the screen remains black. After about a half to one minute, the fans go crazy and I have to shut it off. I've tried a few things like holding shift or alt, but that doesn't work as it doesn't even display a white screen.
I need to know what to do and I don't really have the time to buy new parts right now. I'm really a windows based pc fixer by the way so I'm new to fixing macs.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Recovery partition is missing boot file!

My operating system was missing and my hard drive was formatted I tried using the windows installation disc but it didn't help. Then I installed Windows 8 its seems a little too confusing but I miss my Windows 7 features. Is there any way to boot from the recovery drive without the boot file, Windows 8 can't open the recovery manager  though.
    This question was solved.

Sometimes you can mark the Recovery patition as Active and the laptop will boot into it and reinstall.
    1.Open Disk Management>>Instructions
2.Right-click on the "HP Recovery" partition and select "Mark as Active Partition."
3.When the warning prompt appears, select "Yes" - Reboot and it will automatically boot into the Recovery Manager.
If this fails, phone HP to order Recovery Disks for your machine.Choose your country here> Contact HP

  • Missing Audio / Sound in imovie with .AVI files when imported from iphoto

fortunately i don't need this answered, eventually figured it out my self, just thought it would be helpful to share the solution to this problem as I'm sure others have experienced it. The problem makes more sense when explained chronologically.
My wife has a Casio digital camera, and had recorded many Movies on it, they all sat in iPhoto all worked fine until i upgraded to Quicktime 7.5, then the audio disappeared. i tried in vain to fix (reinstalled QT 7.5, removed plugins, reinstalled etc.), but to no avail, so i left it - this was all under Tiger, i decided I'd upgrade to Leopard and see if the problem went away.
Before upgrading to Leopard i got iLife 08, when i first launched iMovie08 it pulled in all the movies from iPhoto, but they too had no sound.
Then i upgraded to Leopard, now the quicktime missing audio issue got fixed, so i could hear the audio again when launching quicktime via iPhoto (turns out the issue was with how quicktime was handling adaptive PCM audio stream) - i expected all would be fine in iMovie... but it wasnt.
after much experimentation i realised that i had to force iMovie to re-import all the video from iPhoto, this fixed the issue, but with no obvious way to do this, this is what i did:
    - opened finder, navigated to iphoto library, right click and chose 'show package contents'
    - navigated to the data folder and did a search on this folder only for all movie files (when imovie had originally converted iPhoto movie files into thumbnails it dropped all the thumb size movie files in this folder)
    - deleted all the movie files from the Data folder, making sure not to delete the movie files in any other folders & emptied trash
    - launched imovie, now all the iphoto movies were missing.
    - re-launch iPhoto, whilst holding down shift, option + command keys
    - checked 'rebuild the iphoto library database' only, once done, closed iphoto
    - re-launched imovie, this forced it to re-import all the movies from iphoto
... and then the sound was back.
    FYI
    this worked when using...
    OS 10.5.4
    QT 7.5
    iMovie 7.1.4
    iPhoto 7.1.4
    jb

    Hi MGW,
I do not no how things are handled when using HDV and technical documentation is hard to find on this topic of how photo are handled using HDV but in iMovie and most non HDV video editing software the picture is always 72ppi regardless of what is was/is on the outside and the images that appear the worst are the ones with less.
On a side note I don't use iPhoto because of all the superfluous files and thumbnails it creates and it disorganises my photos according to criteria that is completely irrelevant to me. I have had these thumbnails pop up in the browser in the past primarily with any photos that existed in the library prior to any updates. With what I have been working on as of late can understand how and why this could happen.
If you scroll through the media browser dose it appear that the library you are working with duplicates itself somewhere along the line or do you see double images side by side?
What are you machine specs and please include you screen/display size and graphics card information as this is the most relevant information at this point with what you are doing.

  • Missing Boot Camp after 10.6.2 update

I have just updated from 10.6.1 to 10.6.2 through software update facility. I noticed my boot camp disk (a separate disk inside my my Mac Pro) is now missing. I can't see it in disk utilities or Tech Tool Pro. How do I find out if it is still there or physically broken. Luckily it's only used for testing websites so not urgent but can someone shed some light maybe?
    Thanks!

  • Logic Pro missing EXS24 sounds after migration

I just got a new iMac and migrated Logic from my old Mac.  But a LOT of the sounds I use from the EXS24 plugin are missing!
Does anybody know how I can get them back?  I already tried to reinstall Logic, but the sounds are still missing.
It's weird because some of the sounds are still there, while others are missing.
My luck, most of the ones I use are the ones missing.
I don't know if other plugins are also missing stuff, so far they all seem to be EXS24 sounds.
    Thanks,
    Dan,

Using MA is never a good idea with Logic as many people find themselves having the same issue.
It is always better to install Logic from scratch on a new Mac.... alongh with any 3rd party plugins and libraries and then copy over your projects etc manually...
But.. having said that, did you also download all the additional content from the Logic Pro menu bar option?
    Logic Pro/Download Addional Content
That might help... but not always...
You may also need to try and rebuild your Spotlight indexes too.. but again, that doesn't always fix things...
