Missing BootCamp Partition
Today i decided to start up bootcamp on my macbook pro.
I started Boot Camp Assisstant, partitioned 15GB for windows and it was going fine until my system decided to crash and had to be restarted.
When i started it back up the 15GB i partitioned for windows was missing, starting up Boot Camp Assisstant brings me to the intro page like it hadnt done a thing.
I have 15GB missing somewhere and i have no idea how to recover this space.
I used Disk Utility and tried erasing free space, veryfing the disk, and reparing the disk.
Apon startup when i hold down the option key only Mac HD is shown.
Is my only option to back up my files and erase the whole HD???
1. You cannot repair disk from DU if you had not started either from the Install DVD or and ext HDD,
2. Did you see the 15GB partition from DU?
3. If answer to 1 above is "no", startup using the DVD and repair disk
4. Next, startup normally. Then start Terminal. Type: diskutil list
5. You should get a listing of the drives. While still in Terminal, type: diskutil mergepartitions. You will get a detailed description of how to merge the partitions thereby regaining your entire drive.
6. As always, backup all data before attempting.

The mysterious case of the missing Bootcamp partition space
I've searched and searched, but have come up with nothing, so I hoped that one of you brilliant people could help me:
I created a 122gb partition on my Macbook Pro using Bootcamp.
After all was said and done, Windows installed and so on, Windows told me I had only 113gb on the partition.
However, once back in OSX, Disk Utility told me that the partition was indeed 122gb as I had originally planned it.
So, does anyone have any idea where those 9gb magically disappeared to? Did I do something wrong, and is there a way to fix this?
Bootcamp is working just fine, and so is OSX (aside from the Bootcamp drive icon not showing up on the desktop anymore for some strange reason, nor the Bootcamp partition showing up as a selectable start up drive), so I'm at a loss.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! If you are on iOS 8.2 then update to iOS 8.3.
If that doesn't solve the problem try the standard troubleshooting steps in this order:
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds). No data will be lost.
Restore: Connect your device to iTunes on your computer, backup, and then select Restore to Factory.

Have you used any tools to resize your Windows partition at any time prior to the Yosemite upgrade?
Here is a reference thread that you can follow - Missing Bootcamp Partition (with pastes!).
You are in Testdisk Quick Search, you will need to run Deeper Search to find your lost 'NTFS' partition. -

After that I follow this solution
Rebuild using start/end offsets from Testdisk DeepSearch using GPT Fdisk (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/)
Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0
P (print the full list of parts)
D (delete)
4 (part 4)
N (new part)
4 (part 4)
392579071- Start offset in bytes (start point for Bootcamp part)

Recovering bootcamp partition - is there a solution that works?
Dealing with bootcamp issues after a Lion upgrade seems to be a common problem with no agreed solution.
When I upgraded my iMac to Lion, the upgrade process couldn't create a recovery partition so Apple support advised me to use Disk Utility to create a small (5 GB) block of free space on my harddisk for the recovery partition to use and then to use Disk Utility to enlarge the OSX partition again to recover whatever remaining free space was left after the Lion upgrade had completed.
This I duly did. However, after I enlarged the OSX partition using Disk Utility to recover the free space I found that a) the Bootcamp partition had been renamed "disk0s4" and b) when holding down the Option key when booting, the Recovery option was now labelled "EFI Boot" and appeared to boot from the regular OSX partition. Attempting to boot windows in Bootcamp results in a "missing operating system" error message.
I'm not so worried about the recovery partition as I have a bootable DVD and USB flash drive.
What I would like to do is recover some files from the Windows partition. There is a lot of opinions in the Apple suport forums about what works such as, booting Windows from the install disk and running the "fixmbr" and "fixboot" commands or using rEFIt or BootPicker (which doesn't seem to work on Lion).
Is there a reliable approach to fixing this problem so that I can at least read the contents of the partition, even if I can't boot from it? If I can't actualy recover the partition I'm not too fussed, so long as I can get the data off it.
Thanks...MacsWhy do you suggest installing Lion on an external h/disk? Is this because of problems with Lion or just suggested standard procedure?
Some of the options may work although I am unable to mount the partition at all (in OSX or by booting from a Linux live CD and trying to mount it from there) so I'm not sure how far any of them will get.
I haven't tried booting from the Windows DVD as yet.
If I run Verify on Disk Utility I get this:

I wondered whether the entry in the partition table had been completely screwed so I had a look with FDisk and GDisk.
GDisk says this about the partition table:

From looking at the Fdisk and GDisk output I cannot see where the problem is occurring (although I know 2/5ths of stuff all about partition tables). I notice that the Bootcamp partition is now lacking a name although I don't know whether this matters or not and strangely FDisk identifies it as an HPFS filesystem whereas Disk Utility identifies it as MSDOS (FAT). -
Bootcamp partition is no longer visible and bootable
I decided to change size of my bootcamp (windows partition) by following steps in this thread:
how to resize my bootcamp partition without deleting itit
I ended up with having bigger windows partition (which is what I was trying to achieve), that I was able to boot to, but my Windows disk was no longer seen in OS X. I reviewed the thread above once again and it was pointing to another thread where folks were discussing issue similar to mine:
Repairing Boot Camp after creating new partition
Bottom line - Unfortunately, after performing the suggested action plan, I am no longer able to boot to my windows partition nor to see it from OS X
(I am able to select Windows disk while hitting Alt/Option during the boot, but then I get the message 'A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart')
Please see the diagnostics below and please advise how this could be fixed - at minimum I would like to boot to Windows partition again, maximum - also to access it via OSX as well.

So do you think there are there any chances of fixing it?
Though it is sad that resizing of bootcamp is not supported natively (by Disk Utility?) as it seems a lot of people would like to have this. -
Bootcamp partition Black Screen of Death after restore from DMG file + mbr rebuild
I have a 2012 Macbook Pro 15", and my hard drive died the other day. Thankfully I had a bitwise copy (non-compressed DMG file) of my Bootcamp partition from that morning via Disk Utility, and I had all of my Mac data backed up through Time Machine.
The new disk was installed with the factory default Mac OS. I was told to try and restore the Windows partition before I restored my Mac partition. I spent all weekend and the past two days trying to restore my Windows... I took it to the Mac store and they said this was "not in their skill set to assess".
First through Bootcamp I installed Windows 7 (I still have the original install disk!), then I restarted in the Recovery partition (that comes with Mac) to load the DMG file onto the Bootcamp partition. I had to load the DMG file into the source files on the left of Disk Utility by clicking it twice, and then selected all the files as the source image in the "Restore" tab of the Bootcamp drive, and the Bootcamp partition as the destination. Everything went smoothly as far as I can tell.
Here's where things go south. I restart, after the image is loaded onto the Bootcamp partition, into Bootcamp and I receive a "Missing Operating System" error.
I then run through all of the bootrec.exe functions
bootsec.exe /nt60 all /force (which resulted in "Bootcode was successfully updated on at least one volume.")
I ran DISKPART to flag the partition as active and navigated to Partition 4 (Bootcamp) and the readback was
"Partition 4 Type : 07 Hidden : No Active : Yes Offset in Bytes : 320108232704 Volume # - Volume 1 Ltr - C Label - BOOTCAMP Fs - NTFS Type - Partition Size - 165 GB Status - Healthy"
chkdsk C: /f went well too if I remember correctly.
The only part that keeps my hopes up is that from Mac I can see all of my Windows files, it recognizes the Bootcamp partition, and everything is right in place. Any help is greatly appreciated! Also if anybody knows a better way to restore Bootcamp from a DMG please let me know! Thank you so much in advance for any feedback you may be able to provide. I can boot from my Windows installer and run any commands, and terminal is a thingRunning "sudo gpt -r -v show /dev/disk0" gives the following

How can I fix my bootcamp partition?
Hi there,
I'm a relative noob when it comes to OSX so please be gentle with me.
I'm running an early 2011 Macbook Pro which initially had OSX Maverick with a Windows 7 Bootcamp partition. All was working perfectly and seamlessly until I enthusiastically decided to upgrade to OSX Yosemite which resulted in my Bootcamp partition disappearing. In my haste to try and fix this I looked through the apple support community questions and used fdisk to try and fix the issue.
It initially worked and I now could see the Windows option on the boot menu but when actually trying to boot into Windows it ended up saying "Missing Operating System"
I then tried to boot into Windows recovery using my Win7 CD in an attempt to repair the boot sector or whatever to no avail. I also started to try and repair the windows installation by installing it again and that crashed while I was working on it so now I have an "Unknown" area on my hard drive.
Then I installed rEFIT and partition inspector to try and fix it and this it the output:
*** Report for internal hard disk ***
Current GPT partition table:
# Start LBA End LBA Type
1 40 409639 EFI System (FAT)

4 563173376 625141759 Basic Data
Current MBR partition table:
# A Start LBA End LBA Type

2 409640 490273855 ac Apple RAID

4 * 563173376 625141759 07 NTFS/HPFS
MBR contents:
Boot Code: Unknown, but bootable
Have I well and truely ruined my bootcamp and have to start from scratch? It's not the end of the world since I backed up most of my important documents and pictures etc but it took me a long time to install all the software that I require for work on my Windows partition.
Any help or advice would be appreciated and again, please be gentle, I am a noob.
Thanks in advance!!You have screwed up the original bootloader that enabled you to boot each OS properly. At best you can open Boot Camp Assistant and see if it will remove the partition, but my guess it will not. Hence, you must re-partition the drive back to one partition, OS X, then make a new Boot Camp partition. Alternatively, you can try using Camptune X for Mac | MacUpdate to manipulate, etc. the partition and restore the drive non-destructively.

BOOTCAMP partition not visible in Finder, not Mountable in Disk Utility
Did a fresh Bootcamp install of Windows 7 on my MBA running 10.9.4, switched back and forth a few times and now the BOOTCAMP partition doesn't show up in the left pane in Finder. I hopped into Disk Utility to see what was going on and it was there, just not mounted, so I clicked mount, was told it couldn't be mounted, and it suggested I run first aid on it. I clicked Verify, nothing useful to me, then Repair, and got quite a lot of feedback that I do not understand, and then after that it was still unmountable.
I tried to copy everything it said into a pastebin because it was very long with lots of starting and stopping and counting percents inbetween, but it was over 500kb and that's the limit for free users on pastebin, so here's a trimmed version. http://pastebin.com/neBUTdZi
I tried booting into Windows after that, and it jumped into System Repair. Apparently, according to Windows, my Boot Manager is missing or corrupt... and since I still can't access it from the Mac side of things, I thought I'd just wipe the partition in BootCamp Utility and start over.
Except instead, I get this error:
"Your disk could not be restored to a single partition.
An error occurred while restoring the disk to a single partition."
Disk Utility let me wipe it but I still can't mount it, either, again suggesting I run first aid on it (this does nothing). I can't boot into the Mac's Recovery mode either. It just jumps straight to Internet Recovery. When I hold option upon boot, all three partitions show up (Mac, Recovery, Windows), but when I click the recovery one it loads for a bit and then the laptop just instantly shuts off.... I'm more than a little frightened now. Have I corrupted my internal harddrive perchance? You should be able to do it from Internet Recovery or you can try to add the Recovery partition back.

Recreate missing recovery partition
After wiping my computer via partitioning from a USB installer, and reinstalling from the USB, I noticed when I tried to boot that there is no recovery partition. Just OS X and Windows (bootcamp). Is there a proprietary built in Apple way to recreate the recovery partiton?
CCC Carbon Copy Cloner has a utility called "Disk Center" that is included with CCC that will create a Recovery Partition for you. I understand that CCC is not free, but it does have a free 30 day trial.
I did use the musings.silvertooth.us utility to create a missing recovery partition successfully, but found (1) it hard to find the right version on that site and (2) I was somewhat uncomfortable running a low-level AppleScript install program style utility built by an unknown source on the internet. Call my paranoid, but in the future I would prefer to either use CCC to avoid losing my recovery partition like I did with Super Duper (which I've loved for years until this missing recovery partition issue) or use CCC to create missing recovery partitions.
The "Disk Center" in CCC Carbon Copy Cloner is not obvious and easy to find... it's easy to not know it's there. But once you find it in the CCC menu system, it is seemingly obvious that it is a turnkey way to create a Recovery HD Partition.
I just thought I would share, since I burned several hours of pain-staking research and experimentation on this. -
Problems with Bootcamp partition solved using program: iPartition
I Had real BOOTCAMP partition problems:
1. I couldn’t see the partition in the startup list
2. I got an error message “missing operating system”
3. All this was a result of adding an extra Mac partition for Mavericks
4. I fixed it all with a program called iPartition from “Coriolis Systems” in the United Kingdom!!!!!!!!!!!!!Well, you're not alone. Many other users are having the same problem, and it appears that Apple is ignoring the problem. I bought my iMac 27" in June 2010 and installed Bootcamp 3.1 running Windows 7. About every other reboot the gray screen will freeze during bootup and I have to do a hard reboot. Sometimes I get the Disk Read Failure. It is very, very frustrating. The only reason I bought the iMac 27" is that I like the look of it and the big screen; I have no desire to switch to a Mac, as I have too much money invested in Windows development software. I've installed multiple dual-boot systems in other non-Mac systems and never had any problems. I hope Apple stops ignoring the problem and comes out with a fix real soon.

Unable to boot up/into (win7) bootcamp partition following Mountain Lion upgrade
Greetings to all, I hope somebody could please help me with this issue;
A few days ago I upgraded to mountain lion, and immediately after the upgrade was completed and the system rebooted, I discovered that a new partition (Recovery-10.8) had suddenly come into existence in place of my bootcamp partition upon holding alt on boot. My bootcamp partition does show up now after re-syncing boot tables in rEFIt, though all that happens while booting up is a missing operating system error. I tried the win7 boot dvd, but it does not and did not see the partition; but very strangely, it referred to my computer as %1, and my account name in OS X is simply “1”. This leads me to believe that my bootcamp partition got knocked back a spot due to the introduction of that pesky new partition, a problem all too similar to many others’ pleas for help, though too individually complex for a simple copy and paste type of a solution~ and for a lowly user like me to tackle.
Please do help me good sirs,
Regards,
Royce
P.s. bootcamp partition never showed on startup disk
P.p.s. in disk utility it cannot be mounted, is referred to as disk0s4, and is greyed outI see two things. First, notice this fourth line from your GPT. It says ~73GB of disk space is not allocated to any partition, it's free space. Why?

The good news is that partition 4 for Windows in the GPT and MBR have the same start - end sectors. However in the MBR no partition is marked bootable. One must be bootable and it's customary for Apple to mark the Windows partition bootable. I strongly suspect this is why Windows is not a boot option, and it's rather easy to fix.

My suggestion is that you reclaim the missing free space before you proceed with MBR repair, but missing ~73GB of space isn't hurting anything. Try the following and report back:
diskutil list /dev/disk0

Slow reboot after deleting bootcamp partition
Hello,
I was just told by a tech store that my bootcamp partition was slowing down my computer incredibly. I no longer need this partition so I went into Disk Utility, clicked the partition, and deleted it. I also had my RAM updated from 4GB to 8GB. I have an Early 2011 Macbook Pro, operating on Yosemite.
The only question I have is, when I rebooted my computer for the first time after deleting the partition, the restarting process took much longer than normal. Without the bootcamp startup, I figured the startup time would be less, when in reality, it was longer. Is there something I missed while deleting my partition, and is there a way to fix this and speed up the reboot time? If not, will this slow reboot be a one time issue?
Any comments would be appreciated!
Thanks,
RachelThere is a hidden Recovery HD between the OS X and the deleted BC partition, which you can verify using
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0
in OSX Terminal.
BCA does a better job by also relocating the Recovery HD appropriately and giving you a contiguous partition.
The only other method is to subsume Recovery HD in OS X partition and then re-install OS X which will rebuild Recovery HD. This does not modify any of you files, but just the OS.
You will also need to clean the Hybrid MBR which is now dangling and inappropriate for your case. -
Is there a way to backup my bootcamp partition to TM? The TM application doesn't give alot of options other than to exclude things, but not to add.
If I look in TM backups of my computer, the "C" drive is not shown. When I look in TM to see if the C drive is being excluded, it is grey'd out, not offering the option to exclude OR include it. In documents/virtual machine, there is NOTHING. I read somewhere that the entire virtual machine is stored here which would make for easy backup, but it appears to be more of a 'document' storage folder (unless I am missing something hidden, but that doesn't appear to be the case).
I run my business AutoCAD through Fusion and would like to backup the system at least once a week, just for the mere fact of settings, etc. All other project and business data is stored on my iMac partition, which DOES back up through TM. Any suggestions??I read somewhere that the entire virtual machine is stored here which would make for easy backup, but it appears to be more of a 'document' storage folder (unless I am missing something hidden, but that doesn't appear to be the case).
Since you decided to use Fusion to work with a Bootcamp partition, you don't have Windows in a real Virtual Machine file. Parallels and Fusion can build their own virtual hard drives (really just files on the mac), with the OS, applications, and files on the Mac hard drive.
Apparently, you haven't used that option, but rather are using Fusion to work with a real MS-Dos partition that was created by Bootcamp. Time Machine can't work with a partition like this. I guess you decided to use Bootcamp for performance reasons, but it also means you will probably want to use a program like WinClone to back it up. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/25932
In addition, if you do decide to use a Virtual Machine file to run windows instead of a Bootcamp partition, you will still probably want to exclude the VM file from the Time Machine backup because Time Machine will want to create a whole new copy of the entire VM file every time you use windows. I just manually copy the VM file to an external drive on occasion. -
I have Windows 7 on a Bootcamp Partition on my MacBook Pro. I want to start using Mac OS Mountain Lion full time now and erase the Bootcamp Partition.
I was going to use the Migration Assistant to move my Windows files (such as bookmarks, email, my enormous iTunes Library etc) over to the Mac partition but the problem is that Migration Assistant must be running on the Windows partition at the same time. Difficult to do when they're both on the same hard drive/computer.
I know i could just copy all the files i need onto an external drive but I'm afraid i'll miss something. Plus its alot of work. I'm thinking there must be an easier, mostly pain free way of making the move to MacOS permanently. I can't think of what it would be though. Any suggestions?Yes, you can simply install the existing drives in the new computer's drive bays. Order is not relevant.
I don't see any reason why Windows will not boot on the new computer from the existing drive. If Windows considers that the hardware has changed all that's required is re-activation. As far as hardware interfaces all you need do is to install the Windows drivers from the installation DVD that comes with the new computer.
Snow Leopard will have to be installed on your existing hard drive, and it must be either a later build or later version than what is shipped with the new computer. Otherwise you will have to reinstall Snow on your existing drive using the installer DVD that comes with the new computer. SL by default does an Archive and Install so your drive is not erased when you reinstall OS X.
If you actually have software that ties its registration to some unique hardware ID, then all you need do is re-enter the serial number. Apple's software does not usually connect the serial number to the hardware, so I doubt you will have any problem with it.

SSL VPN Webauth/anyconnect failue
So with our setup we're using the SSL webauth page as it uses RSA Adaptive Authentication as the second factor for auth. In the DAP we then push the connection over to anyconnect. The result is this. 1. Webauth to AD 2. RSA auth with questions 3. DAP
