Missing brightness controls in Tiger – Genius required please!

I notice there are already several threads relating to the loss of brightness controls when upgrading from Panther to Tiger. This has now happened to one of my iBooks and I have spent the day trying to find a solution to the problem. So far I have not succeeded but I do have a few more clues and I’m hoping that some genius out there might be able to chip in and present a solution.
The brightness controls work perfectly in Panther but upgrading to Tiger causes them to stop working. (I have tested this in 10.4, 10.4.3, 10.4.6 and 10.4.9)
The problem is not resolved by any kind of reset – PRAM, PMU, NVRAM etc.
In the folder System/Library/Displays there is a folder called Overrides. This folder has significantly more contents in Tiger than in Panther so I tried replacing the Tiger version with the Panther one – still no change.
In the extensions folder I tried replacing Tiger’s AppleOnboardDisplay.kext with the earlier Panther version – still no change.
I am at about the limit of my current software expertise here but it seems that Tiger is for some reason deciding that the display is not what it wants it to be and so limits controllability.
There must be someone out there who knows how to take this to the next level? You would certainly make a lot of G4 iBook users very happy if you could solve this issue or even provide another clue so, go on, give those brain cells a workout and win the praise of all those not-so-bright (no pun intended) iBook owners out there.
Thanks in anticipation.

14" iBook G4 1.33GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Welcome to Apple Discussions Mactuition!
I don't know if this will help you or someone else addressing your question, but I also have the 1.33 GHz iBook G4 running the current version of Tiger (I purchased mine in 2006 with Tiger installed) and have never had an issue with the brightness controlls.
This leads me to a few possibilities...
1) Is it possible that there was a firmware update or new graphics driver between your iBook and mine?
2) Did you perform a clean install when upgrading to Tiger? Could something else be causing a conflict?
3) Could there be a physical malfunction or defect?
I'll take a look at some things and let you know if I come up with anything. Good luck.

Please don't tell me to adjust anything on the preferences, since I have tried all.  I think it may be anoter kind of problem, maybe hardware related or anything.
I ran the Hardware repair DVD and everything was ok, but when the imac restarted the screen was very lit again, but when it went sleep, when it went awake again the screen got dimmed again.  Because of that I think that the problem could be software related, but who knows.  Excuse my english.

I can't see another possible answer - the longer your machine is up, the more the power supply is stressed, it protects itself by dimming the screen to lower the draw on it.

Brightness control does not work with the bluetooth keyboard connected on my iPad2. Please someone could help me ?

    Julien-
I have the Apple MC184LL/A Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard.  The brigtness control works with mine, as do most of the other functions.
Try cycling the keyboard off and on.  Hold the power button until the green LED goes out.  Then press it one more time to turn it back on.
You might try resetting the iPad's network.  Go to Settings-General-Reset-Reset Network Settings.  Then you may need to reconnect your WiFi and Bluetooth.
If that doesn't help, try resetting/rebooting the iPad.  Hold both the Home and Sleep buttons for several seconds until the Apple logo appears.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" arrow.  The iPad will restart in a couple of minutes.  Resetting this way will not hurt anything, and sometimes clears up mysterious problems.

  • Using F1, F2 as brightness control

I need to enable the "Use all F1, F2 as standard function Keys" option in system preference because I run an Application that requires F6 for a function.
However I miss using F1 and F2 as brightness controls so I set those as shortcuts in the shortcuts page.
Whever I push those buttons, they just give me a screen flash as if they are not assinged, please help!
I know I can always use Cmd+F1/F2 to enable the special function but it would be useful to be able to assign the shortcut myself.

Update: I went to the Apple Store to find out the current gen rMBP does not have this option in it's System Preference pane. Not sure if thats the reason the shortcut is not available. I'm using late 2012 iMac on the current 10.9.2 release. The quck fix is to install the 3rd party "FunctionFlip" pref addon.

  • Hey Admin(Karl) Still have brightness control problem w/dual ACDs on G5

Can someone on the administrator or tech 3 or 4 guru level from Apple Please tell me what I need to do to access the brightness controls of my two previous generation "clear with/ white frame" apple 23" cinema displays ? I posted here two weeks ago - had no responses.
Went to AppleCare via phone for an hour - Indian person trying to help said it is available in the monitors prefs tabs/and monitor pull down menu on the menu bar next to the time ( nothing but resolution/arrangement/color profile there ).
I have since re-installed 10.4 from the original disks AND upgraded to 10.4.3 - Hoping that something would change. Nothing did.
Nothing shows up on screen when pushing the brightness buttonon either monitor, OR when I go to the monitors control panel - no brightness slider or tab on top.
It is driving me crazy to have to review my work ( digital photography ) on my old G4 system to be able to judge the proper density of the images.
I can profile the pair with a Spyder2 calibrater, and load the profiles fine, but again brightness is the issue, not the color. One of the displays is about 30% brighter than the other, and there in lies my problem.
Since the same difference in the screens is the same across various applications ( Final Cut Pro / Adobe PS / DVD player ), can I assume that this is a system issue software issue ?
Am I the only one having this problem ? Or is there just a glitch that no one has managed to tackle and fix even this far into Tiger ?
Please someone reply and save my sanity !

NEW Powermac G5 2.3 w/ dual port stock video card   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Hi Mel,
Sorry to hear that you are having problems.
I feel I have to point out that most of the 3 or 4 level Gurus don't actually work for Mac. We tend to obtain our knowledge from our own experiences plus sharing other peoples' experiences in this forum.
The reason I haven't responded to your issue myself is because I have no first hand experience of your problem, and I haven't been able to find anybody else who has had this problem and has been able to fix it. I'm always reluctant to respond unless I feel I have some information that will really help (or, at least, not possibly make things worse).
Anecdotally, this issue appears to have surfaced with the release of Tiger, so it may well be a software issue.
I don't know how old your G5 is - will it function with Panther? If that is the case, then installing Panther on another drive or partition (i.e. keep Tiger for now), and then booting up with Panther may give you an interim solution while the issue (hopefully) gets resolved in Tiger.
The fact that the brightness options are not available probably means that the drivers bundled with the Tiger installation for the graphics card that is in your G5 do not support the displays you are using properly. I believe that the stock video card you are using is an ATI card (you might want to check this via system profiler). At this stage, it would certainly be worth your while to contact ATI support and see whether they have drivers available that will assist you. This link may help get you started:
    http://www.ati.com/products/mac.html
I acknowledge that I haven't really given you a solution, and I apologize for that. Hopefully, what I have given you will give your quest some direction.
Please let us know how you fared. All the best.
    Cheers!
    Karl

  • 27" LED Cinema Display, no brightness control

I have a 27" LED Cinema Display that has the Mini DisplayPort cable and I am plugging into a MacbookPro 15" with a thunderbolt port. When I go into System Preferences there is no brightness control or ability to turn off automatic adjustment for the LED display, just the computer. I have the usb port plugged in as well. I have seen previous updates to fix this for earlier versions (10.6) but that didn't work on my OS X 10.8.2. Is there anything to remedy this? The automatic adjustment of brightness is very distracting and I would like to have control of the brightness of my monitor.

    FINAL NOTES
It’s possible that the issue might simply be resolved when applying both a Software and a Firmware update for the LED Cinema Display. If you haven’t already, please download and install the following to see if these updates resolve the issue:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1338
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1107
Secondly, if you are using Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) or Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks), please try this additional Software Update for the LED Cinema Display if you haven’t already installed it:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1613
Additionally, my research into other customers’ cases with these issues (brightness controls and USB functions not behaving correctly) regarding the LED Cinema Display shows that the following method might fix your issue: When connecting the affected LED Cinema Display into your Mac Pro, first plug the USB connector into the Mac, then plug the Mini-Display connector into the Mac, and finally re-open System Preferences to see if the brightness controls have returned.
That mentioned just previously is worthless for those with an updated operating system but is mentioned regardless.
As it works out those installers will not allow installation and merely state that you don't need this software in updated systems.
They require that you make a brand new OS installation to be of any effect and are included in Software Updates.
They are worth a try if all else fails.
You should also try Disabling your Bluetooth "Discoverable" setting.
The Discoverable Bluetooth setting seeks to establish a wireless USB connection and depending on your RF environment, can become very busy if not conflicted. (can override a wired USB connection)
    Last but certainly not least.
Do NOT connect your monitor USB through a USB hub.
Internally your monitor has a USB hub.
Connecting a USB hub TO a USB hub is just asking, (if not blatantly begging), for problems.

  • Power Manager Brightness Control

i dont know whether this was intentional or not, but when the power gauge is not being displayed in the taskbar, the brightness settings defined in the power manager dont take effect on ac/battery switch events.
if this is a feature of the power manager, is there a way to make the brightness controls still work despite not having the gauge in the taskbar?

    Hi,
can you pleas edescribe, what version of Power Manager and Os are you using?
I have tested the current build of ThinkVantage Power Manager and did not experienced the situation as you described.
However to be honest I can imagine this being real, if one of the following in missing, or not up to date:
    - Power Management driver
    - Hotkey driver
    - System interface driver
Please check, whether you have all of these apps/drivers installer.

  • 27" Cinema Display - No Brightness Control

I have read over all the threads here and the internet.  I have an iMac (black back) that my 27" Cinema display is connected to.  USB and Displayport are both connected.  Everything appears just fine.  However, I cannot adjust the brightness on the Cinema display.  I have tried everything.  I even hooked it up to my Macbook Pro early 2011 model.  Still the same issue.  There is no brightness slider.  The slider only appears for the native display only.  Never the Cinema display.  What am I missing?
    Running Lion on both machines.

USB cable is connected.  It's not an SMC issue.  I have tried this on 3 iMac's and 1 2011 MacBook Pro.  Same issue on all machines.  Cinema display does NOT have brightness control.  Only the native screen.
Tried on OSX Lion 10.7 and  Snow Leopard 10.6.  Tried loading the 1.0 Cinema display firmware update.  Won't install on Lion and states it's not require on Snow Leopard 10.6.
Any other suggestions out there?  The display is full brightness it seems and it's annoying as crap.

  • Windows 8.1 update and brightness control

I have a DELL XPS L521X with Windows 8.1 (I had windows 8 some days ago) and I have had two problems:
    1) I did not allow Windows to upgrade to 8.1 and it forced me to do it. It gave me 15 minutes to save progress and do it. I was watching the NBA finals on my computer and it was the only thing I had to watch the game. The installation lasted the whole second
half the game and I WAS NOT ABLE TO WATCH IT DUE TO THIS, YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW I AM FEELING ABOUT NOT USING WINDOWS EVER AGAIN... How can I prevent it from ever upgrading anything without my consent? I had already turned off updates from Control Panel\System
and Security\Windows Update but it didn't help.
    2) My brightness control became broken after the 8.1 update. I had to manually pick the older Intel HD 4000 driver to have it working again or else my eyes would stop functioning after such a bright display. I had to switch to the 9.17 driver version from
September 2012. Where can I get the lastest WORKING version of the driver?
Please stop making me loose days fixing Windows issues...

    Hi,
We have set the GP to disable Windows 8.1 update in Windows store, you can check it here:
How to Disable “Update to Windows 8.1 for Free” Notification in Windows 8 Store?
    http://www.askvg.com/how-to-disable-update-to-windows-8-1-for-free-notification-in-windows-8-store/
For your second issue, it's not only related to Windows, but also the driver provider. Microsoft is working together with the device manufacturers and partners to deliver update package and try the best to solve the compatible issue and bring a great improvement
on user experience. But you know, it will take some time.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • Missing brightness slider for External monitor - normal?

I've recently hooked up my new (2 month) MacBook Pro 13 (mid 2010) to an external monitor, which is also connected to a PC on another input. In this dual display setup, the MBP local display has a Brightness Slider, but the External display does not. What is normal? Is there a way I can enable a brightness control for the external monitor?
Because the monitor is shared between the computers (1 on VGA, 1 on DVI), I want to use brightness controls on each computer and leave the monitor brightness "as is". It has minimal effect on the DVI input on my monitor, anyway.
    Thanks in advance,
    C
    Some details and experiments:
    - External monitor is a Dell 1905FP, 4:3 1280x1024, with both analog VGA and digital DVI.
    - I get the same issue - missing brightness slider on external - driving either input, using Apple branded miniDP to VGA or miniDP to DVI adapters.
    - I've tried suggestions found elsewhere in the forum to a) Reset PRAM; b) remove 2 plist files and force OS X to reload those; c) retry Detect Displays. No change.
    - Same results whether the display is mirrored or not - the built in LCD has a slider, the external does not.
    - MBP keyboard controls for brightness work as expected on the built in display.
    - MBP is current model, received as 10.6.3 and recently updated to 10.6.4. I don't believe I connected the external monitor while it was in 10.6.3 so do not know whether there might have been a difference.

You could create a custom color profile with reduced brughtness using the "Calibrate" function in the "Color" pane of "Displays" System Preference.

    Hi @fjward ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue HP ENVY 17-3090nr 3D Edition Notebook PC and issues with brightness control and the Catalyst Control Center.  I would uninstall any graphic drivers that are listed and  CCC software, restart the computer, then reinstall only the AMD. It will include the Amd Graphics Driver and Catalyst Control Center restart the computer.
Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system.
You can do a system restore. System restore will help if something automatically updated and did not go well on the Notebook.
When performing a System restore please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices as they can cause issues.
Please let me know how this goes.

  • Brightness control problem after returning from Stand By - T500

    Hi,
I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T500 under Windows XP SP2.
In Power Manager, I have created a custom power management scheme and set the brightness to 80%. This works fine when I boot up the machine, but when I return from Stand By mode (sleep) the machine automatically sets the brightness to 100%. I will then have to use to brightness control buttons to set it back to 80%. This is very annoying and obviously a bug.
I have the latest BIOS and Power Manager version installed.
Can someone offer a solution please?

I found your post after searching as I hae the exact problem you describe - I turn off the screen using Fn F3 and later when I wake the display the brightness jumps to 100% and I cannot get it to turn down to any level. It's stuck at 100%. Yup, just tried closing-n-opening the lid the screen goes to my previously set brightness level.
my drivers are current as at 2010-03-26 (today)
Running a downgraded XP W500 model...
    a bug for sure!

  • 24" Display Brightness Control

I have a new 24" Apple display connect to my 15" MBP but have no brightness control. Slim keyboard's F1 & F2 button do not work and there is no brightness slider under the display system preferences.
Running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 all software up to date.
Anyone have any thoughts? Any help or suggestions are obviously welcomed.

    Hi guys,
could you kindly verify whether your screen have uniform color?
On my 24" led cinema display I realized that moving a white Word sheet all over the screen, in some areas it is neutral, in other areas (lower right corner) it has a greenish tint.
Has someone else experienced the same problem?
(Please before answering test the issue in the same way I did!).
    Thanks for your answers.

  • Touchsmart 610 no longer has Beats, Brightness Control with Win8 Upgrade

    Hello,
When upgrading to Windows 8/8.1 I lost all Beats audio functionality and brightness can no longer be adjusted (there is a brightness slider but it does nothing).
    Main Issues Noticed:
-When putting the computer to sleep or shutting down the audio makes a loud "pop" noise even when speakers are muted.
-Beats is gone, can't find any drivers to restore it.
-Brightness cannot be adjusted via brightness control on Win8 nor via system graphics properties.
-610 does not have any physical brightness buttons to adjust.
I have tried restoration to previous configurations, reintalling drivers, etc and nothing has worked so far.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • GP60: After installing new NVIDIA driver, no brightness controls work now.

Hey guys! I have a small problem I'm hoping someone might know how to fix. I just installed a new NVIDIA driver update (I'm now on build ) and now my brightness controls won't work. My computer is stuck in a very bright setting, and I don't know how to fix it. I've restarted the computer, and I've put it into hibernation and restarted it.
Before i did the hibernation, my computer was stuck in GPU mode (it would only use the GPU, even if all I was doing was using PowerPoint). The hibernation/restart fixed that, but not my brightness. Not sure if the problems are related, but throwing that in there too just in case.
I also don't know if this is related as well, but my NVIDIA control panel will not work either; it says that I don't have a display that uses it or something like that. Again, probably TMI, but better safe than sorry!
I'd appreciate any advice that I could get! Thanks!
    Specs:
    MSI GP60
    intel i5-4200
NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M/2 GB DDR3 (my problem child today).
Update: Now my computer is back in GPU-only mode and nothing is helping it swap out of it. I'm thinking the two are related now...

Have you installed the Intel graphic driver?
The hot key for brightness is controlled by EC & Intel graphic driver.
Please refer to the product webpage to download the latest Intel graphic driver:

Pick your model and select Download and your OS type to find the drivers.
